    It should have gotten 400hp 10 years ago. It was on par powerwise with American V8s, the Camaro, Mustang and close to the Vette in 2004 when it debuted with 300hp.
    Imagine if they matched them now since the Camaro is 450 and Mustang 480.

      It could, but it shouldn't have because Subaru was still competing in wrc 10 years ago. Their rally car barely had 330hp. They made the sti with regulations mind and the hp cap in wrc from 10 years ago was 300hp. In 2017, the hp capped was up to 380hp hence why the EVO discontinued in 2015 and then the 2017 Ford Focus came out with 350hp. They had to discontinued the sti so that they can remake a new sti which was a good thing that subaru did.

    "...as a wagon". The return of the rally legend as a wagon would be phenomenal. I'm down with fast three pdeal wagons. If the STi isn't a manual, its sales will tank and then "everyone" (meaning Toyota and Subaru board members) will deem it a failure. And the only reason it would fail is because upper-upper mgmt changed the formula from its core philosophy. Hybrid or not, the car needs to retain its touch w/the past in order to be successful. I don't see Subaru racing a STi in ANY racing series outside the US Rally series any time soon.

    Good video, STI has never been about horsepower but that's all VB owners keep mentioning being better about forgetting about STI always been knowing for handling and as track weapon. FA24 is nice engine, but handling is so poor on new VB, my wife spent $6k on coilovers, sways, bushings, wheels/tires on VB but handling was still poor, it's that open front and open rear diff with electronic brakepad vectoring they took from the Crosstrek and Forester and put in VB. Hope they come out with STI version that always came with front LSD, center DCCD diff, and rear LSD for the handling goodness to compete against Corolla GR and Type R.

    I'll go with the mild hybrid type setup, seems like that's what's happening in racing, I think it'll be an improvement over 100% ICE - reduce turbo lag, better low end power

    I got excited seeing return of Legend and thought Acura finally decided to bring it back, disappointed when I read rest. It's good for Subaru and their fans.

    Great video Sepp! I have owned GC and GD (Bug eye) WRXs and was super lucky to get one of the latter VA STi’s. The Subaru WRX and their associated technology is very slow to evolve, but given how many people still talking this subject there must still be strong interest. Subaru are a small car manufacturer, and have a comparatively similar R&D and vehicle development budget. For the team that develops STi vehicles to get funding for this new gen a business case (or cash injection from shareholder Toyota) needs to happen…
    I will keep my VA clean and shiny and very well maintained meanwhile 😉

    As much as Id love a FA24 simply paired with a sti drivetrain, a fa24 powering the rear wheels with electric motors powering the front would be pretty cool.

    I didn't think it this way, but if VC WRX marks return of the STi with mild hybrid addition, that would be the most ideal setup. Subaru should've seriously looked into mild hybridization of the FA series engines before recklessly jumping into electrification to test the waters as well as allowing their fan base to get used to the new technology.

    I think they’re gonna bring back the STi but as an Impreza hatch this time around. There’s has just been a lot of rumors going around in motorsports that Subaru is eyeballing WRC again, they don’t want Hyundai or their parent company Toyota to just have all the fun. If they are coming back the Impreza for sure will be the rally platform once again.

      I'm under the impression Subaru needs 1 body style for their small car and it's the 5-door hatch. All Crosstrek, 2.5 RS, 2.0 Impreza, WRX, and STI can all be made on this chassis. each car will differ in engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, some body panels and some interior bits...but the remaining 75% is the same and will reduce production costs. The back seats can be the same, but with different stitch patterns on the seat covers. Yes, there will be Federalizarion costs for each engine-transmission combo, but those already exist across several cars. Putting all small Subaru cars on the 5-door hatch will reduce costs overall and and be better for everyone in the end. P.S.: the Legacy just needs to be turned into a road wagon based on the Outback.

    I think Subaru will go hybrid. The boxer engine paired with AWD is their identity.

      My guess is it will be a joint venture with Toyota. 2.4l turbo boxer paired with an electric rear end. Maybe sharing underpinnings with what the new Camry TRD will be.

    Personally I think it's gonna be a hybird as the new 2025 Subaru Ascent has a chance of having a hybird engine so they might share the powertrain with more power

      That is a good observation. Just like the Ascent got the FA24 before the WRX. Subaru just doing the same thing potentially!

    I think they could just do a beefier FA24, brembos, adaptive suspension and the STI transmission. I would trade in my 19 WRX in a heartbeat if they do that

      They just have to give the current WRX TR the STI trans, front and rear LSD. It'd sell like hotcakes. The TR is already 42k I'd imagine this version of STI would be near 50k

    Man I hope, so many people want a new STI, they tuned the 23 and 24 wrx for nurburgring and gt300. They can do alot with FA but we will see what they will do. Also a forester and levorg STI would be cool but probably wouldn't sell as much as WRX STI.

    Reason the sti isn’t available is due to Subaru’s entire lineup not being all that efficient. I rather them hybrid all the normie cars standard and leave the wrx and sti ice only, instead of trying to squeeze in the sti as a hybrid most likely during the mid cycle refresh. Hybrid just adds complexity higher long term cost (due to battery replacement after 8-10 years)

    Personally, I don’t think the STi will revived as an ICE. But rather as a full electric. If electric is boring, it’s actually not after experiencing a ride in Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

    Unless the Subaru WRX STI comes back as a 4door hatchback, im probably jumping into a GR Corolla. I love my 2005 GD chassis hatchback and I really like my VA chassis but I long for a brand new Subaru WRX hatchback.

    hybrid is likely the best choice, obviously. But, Subie would have to implement it well. I'd say closer to hybrid assist, like Benz/BMW/Audi. That way it's the best of both worlds. And, waiting to release it is only bothering people, so Subie should stop fooling around and just release the damn thing.

    The new sti is the TR wrx. It will be a electric sti, Subaru will be releasing 5 new electric vehicles here shortly. But its weird cause toyota supplies subaru with the ev/ hybrid tech and toyota is now focusing on hydrogen engines. Maybe we will see a hydrogen sti

    I really think the reason why we didn't get an STI, this generation, is Toyota ownership.
    I think Toyota didn't want the STI and GR Corolla/Yaris competing for the same small piece of the pie. Therefore, if the STI comes back it can't step on the GR Corolla/Yaris toes and that means potentially pushing it upmarket. However, Subaru doesn't seem to want to compete in that premium sporty market. They tried with the bl/bp Legacy and GR WRX, in retrospect, they didn't do too bad. However, in that same time period, Outback sales took off and Subaru has been copying that pattern ever since. Making everything a big utilitarian value crossover/suv. Now Subaru only offers sporty cars where there is no competition for their product(WRX, Levorg and BRZ).

      Oh I never even thought about Toyota’s influence. Toyota definitely can sway subaru to make sure their market share still isn’t impacted by a next gen STI. Good thoughts man!

      Toyota doesn't sway subarus line up on cars . I work for subaru and that is completely not true. The only reason they own a small portion is subaru needed a car plant and toyota sold it to them nothing more

      Toyota owns 20% of Subaru. That's far from a "small" portion and Subaru is part of Toyota Group. Toyota reports Subaru financials as part of its own reporting. Subaru has leveraged Toyota a lot. From entire models like the Solterra, using Toyota's hybrid tech and Toyota fuel injection system.

      So then why no STI?
      At the time Subaru of America implied it was emissions and that they needed to dedicate resources to electrification. However, we all know Subaru of Japan is still working on ICE technology. Look at Subaru's pre-combustion announcement or US patent filing.

      ​@@dhanipersaud6227 Subaru is an independent company. Toyota is not majority owner and has zero control. That is why when they do joint ventures, like the BRZ/86 they still had to negotiate with one another and do deal making, just like any other company does when working in partnerships. I.e. signing contracts, agreeing to give-and-take, etc etc. The only difference between this partnership is that Toyota has a financial interest in the performance of Subaru (that is what being a shareholder is). If Subaru share values go up, then Toyota asset holdings go up. Being a shareholder also gives you voting rights, i.e. you can vote for dividend, how to treat retained earnings, they can vote on CEO / executive salaries, and things like that. Subaru financial statements are published by Subaru Corporation. If Toyota is reporting anything to do with Subaru (without even looking at it), it obviously would be the share ownership returns of their stake in the company and any revenue/expenses from the partnerships with the Soltera, BRZ/86, manufacturing agreements, parts supply, and so forth.
      Subaru has a small stake in Toyota also. So they both have a stake in one another, which promotes further cooperation, as they both have a financial interest in the other company succeeding. Yet they're both technically still competitors to one another, but given that their car line-ups don't really compete with one another directly (as Subaru's business model generally revolves around focusing on more niche market segments / subsets where they think they have a competitive advantage - and their CEO has publicly stated that Subaru doesn't have ambitions to become a giant automotive company that competes with the big players, instead the CEO said Subaru wants to build cars that their customers love (i.e. to continue focusing on niche market segments and to build a small but highly loyal customer base). Hence, for the most part, the relations and dynamics of the two companies is actually very cooperative and complementary to one another. But in the end, like I said, as they're still separate companies, the GR Corolla would be a potential competitor to the WRX / STI. That is just a simple fact. But Toyota had zero direct input in Subaru not producing the STI. That was an internal Subaru decision.

      ​@@dhanipersaud6227 so if we follow your argument, the actual logical argument would be "Subaru didn't want the STI and GR Corolla/Yaris competing". If the Corolla / Yaris really was part of the thinking, it was Subaru doing the thinking and making the decision, not Toyota. And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the reason, along with emissions. Also add in the fact that the STI is an extremely low volume selling car (like most sport cars are). Subaru don't make much money from selling it (from direct sales), most of the value of the STI comes from being a halo car, and the PR and branding and brand awareness etc that comes about from having this halo car in motorsports. Yet over-time the STI got lost, after WRC it just lived on the WRC history, and then they tried to make it a circuit car (to focus on Nürburgring and time-trial events). It turned into a large family sedan with the VA chassis. Subaru is a fairly conservative company (around taking risk), and like I said, they generally only sell cars where they know they have a competitive advantage (not all the time, like during the EVO days they had a direct competitor, but most of the time this is what they try and do). They know they don't have the capital or economies of scale to compete with the bigger players either (hence why they choose niche segments). Outback is a good one, I think there is only 1 other wagon on the market currently. Crosstrek also is a good one, they saw a gap in the very small SUV market. The Forester was lucky since it was already well positioned to take advantage of the SUV craze, so the Forester is doing fine. Likewise the 86/BRZ - they saw a gap in the entry end of the RWD 2-door sportscar market. The Legacy/Liberty, however, can't compete, so it was dropped from Australia in 2020, and might be dropped from USA in near future. Anyhow, the STI will come back, and I wouldn't be surprised (I think it would be likely) that they will build it specifically to be competitive in motorsports, to have that halo car back into the brand line-up. The intangible value / brand value of the Impreza/ STI, given it's iconic rally history and public awareness is simply too great to not make use of it.

      go buy a Solterra and let us know your thoughts afterwards....nothing screams rally monster like a 4400-pound 200 mile range car. How did the Audi E-tron Dakar Rally cars do and how much did they cost?

      The guys that actually build them would. Hell my 21 limited ran me 43k plus tax new, So far it’s stage 3 making 350whp 420 tq on E. I’ve currently put about 37-38k into it.

    It's not coming back as a gas engine. Subaru as a whole has bad average mpg, so adding a sportier WRX to the mix will not be good. Every car manufacturer is striving to improve overall gas mileage across their entire lineups. Look at the brand doing well and what they have powering their cars.

      Emissions would be the biggest problem. It’s a sport car and not good on gas compared to its competitors. Gas mileage isn’t what’s stopping it from happening.

    They Had that ****ing Hybrid Design in their back pocket since 2005??? No longer worried about the sti. Take all the time you need Subaru. I would still prefer a 2.4liter high output instead though. But it sounds as if the car is already made. They just now have to adhere to the Moronic Federal Govt that does not take into account the Pollution put out by India and China alone.
