There's nothing good enough about either platform at these low power levels to outdo a hp difference. If we were in the 1200hp + range then yeah, traction and driving skill can be all the difference.

The scooby will be 700bhp but only at 4500 rpm in 3rd for a brief moment on the dyno graph and probs has a useable 500bhp. The evo has the better map he probably has access to the 650bhp for a longer period through out the majority of his rev range thats what a good map can do for you.
@antoniofreitas5823 if the scooby had more of an aggressive map for instant the turbo to spoole earlier or anti lag the power band would widen that doesn't fix the gearing however the race would of been less sided on the rolls if that make sense. Regardless the evo has a smaller turbo making it easier to spoole and produce boose lower down in the rpm the gearing on the evo was the icing on the cake.
that PPG gearbox also made good diffrence, despite the subaru driver making pretty good shifts for a subaru gearbox, that PPGd evo with probably a better powerband just made the thing, especially compared with the stock evo gearbox

Having owned a 2005 sti back in 2005 and a 2006 Evo 8 . Both stock the Evo had a better transmission and gearing than the sti did. This drag race proves it . Currently own a 2019 audi rs3 and the audi makes both my old cars feel like turtles 🐢

Suffering from what seems to be a lot of turbo lag also the placement of the turbo means the headers have to be really long meaning it's gonna develop up top

No, that’s not true lol. Many many many guys have street tunes and there is alot of upside to street tuning a vehicle. He will know his power from fuel flow but no exacts.
EVO got a flat foot shifting (used to shift into 3rd and 4th gear). This only "thing" make a huge difference already. Maybe it got straight cut gears (from the noise and how quick the gears bite but not sure). And the real main difference here : the gears ratio work fine with the power delivery. STi is tuned the very old way : no flat foot shifting, standard gearbox (way too shorts gears ratios at this level of power) and don't let the turbo "explain himself". STi turbo's need a little bit more time to spool fully and unfortunally during a shorter rpm range than the EVO (EVO keep pulling until ~8k rpms). STi power's is...confusing. I've seen officials street drag race, and the time of 11.57 at 124 mph is very similar to ~520hp GT impreza STi swapped. BUT at the same time, the 0-60 in 3.74sec is a time of a more more powerfull STi engine without flat foot shifting. 11.57 is very good if we take in count worned 2nd/5th gears synchros. -------- Give to the STI a flat foot shifting, a longer gear ratio, wider power range and the run will be closer. We clearely see the gear difference while looking at the graph (15:34). EVO got longers gears ratios. 4th gear of the EVO is (while exagerating) as long as the 3rd and 4th gears of the STi. I really love the Subaru but to me the EVO engine has more potentiel. My point of view is biaised because we see more heavy tuned EVO than Subaru. I always thought that the Subaru BOXER architecture had shorter power delivery than the EVO. We don't see that much Subaru Impreza doing race over 150mph. Only fews does and every time, they have longer/custom gears ratios.

A 57mm turbo wont push any much more than 650 to 680 max. All these 900 ppl have no clue. The Impreza is clearly not 715bhp and if it did get that id be checking the logs as a 7+sec 100 to 200 for 700bhp+ isnt right.
I know sam said he hasnt dynoed the evo, but im super curious what the curve would look like. Given stock frame but some crazy hybrid setup, i can imagine that low down torque hit is what makes this a monster. The 900 hp capable turbo on the subie took forever to make power and even then it didnt make much. That stock frame turbo evo just makes power EVERYWHERE im guessing.

Everyone gets hung up on the idea that "a larger turbine will make more boost at a given shaft RPM," without ever considering if their engine produces enough exhaust at lower RPM to actually keep the turbo spooled enough to provide useful power. A smaller turbine size will maintain boost consistently, flutter and surge less, spool up faster at a given RPM, etc.
the shifters make a huge difference throwing straight up and down is quicker and more efficient than the standard Manual shifter in the subie Great Video
I've owned both, and both are great cars. The evo will always be faster, but the sti is the more comfy car light to light driving so just depends what you want. Great video!

Evo is 630Whp so around 741Bhp. Scooby was a generous 715bhp
Both cars are very impressive, but the Evo is on another level. The owner drives it like its stolen.. and its a testament to his build quality.

i put 4.44 gears in my subaru - LSD 2 way rear - street straight line - ej207 ra sti jdm - swapped EVO was usually ahead before starting !

That drag gearbox in Evo won everything
This is the out come when you build a roll racing car. Not just a street car like your average evo’s. It’s built, tuned and spec’ed by Sam. An absolute animal of an evo and a testament to all his hard work 😎 I’m laughing hard at all these guys saying 800+ 🤣

The gearbox is one of the most important things here. EVO clearly had the better setup. Those shifts and power transfer on the EVO were madness.

I remember an OG drag race with a 650hp Evo 8. And I think it did 11.3 1/4 mile or something. So Jamie saying 650+ have me wondering "does it mean 700hp😅". And the wrx is way under 700hp

For reference theres a 700bhp scooby ran faster than that evos times so it's probably around 680hp . That scooby today wasnt 700
