Groundhog Day is just something fun. No one actually thinks the little guys and predict the weather, Also, if you are reliving the same day-to-day life, getting up, going to work, going home, going to bed, getting up, going to work....blah blah blah, we might say we are live a Groundhog Day, but it is a direct reference to this film. That wasn't a saying before this film.

Groundhog Day is a lighthearted "holiday" whereby a groundhog predicts whether spring will come early based on whether he sees his shadow, is scared by it, and goes back in his den. If he does, winter will drag on. In other words, you want a cloudy day on Groundhog Day so he doesn't see his shadow.

The original script not only had an explanation for Phil's timeloop, but also how he escaped from it.
I can't remember the exact reason they removed it, but I'm SO glad they did! The movie wouldn't be half as good or as memorable if everything got explained!

Groundhogs are a kind of large rodent, about the size of a rabbit, that hibernate or "go to sleep" during winter, when they come out of their hole in the spring they either ""see their shadow" and go back to sleep which "tradition" means there will be 6 more weeks of winter, or they do not see their shadow and the tradition says that in such a case we will have an early spring It's an excuse for people to get together and have a large party after being stuck inside during the long harsh, cold winter.

I wonder how disorienting it must have been for Phil going forward. For the first time in decades he doesn't know what will happen next, and for the first time in decades if he dies, he actually dies. He would have to regain his natural instinct for self preservation.

Before this film, Groundhog Day was simply the celebration on February 2. If the groundhog sees his shadow there is another six weeks of winter (hint: the groundhog always sees it's shadow be cause the first day of spring is 6 weeks after Feb 2). The day is just an excuse to have a party during the long slog of winter. This film introduced the concept of Groundhog Day meaning a perpetual repetition of events.
The original concept was that Phil spent 10,000+ years in the time loop, but we'll never know how long (although it would take at least 35 years or so to learn everything he did). The loop stopped not because he loved Rita, he loved her from the instant he saw her playing with the blue screen, but because Rita finally fell in love with him.

The meaning of "groundhog day" as "repeating the same things over and over" was a result of this movie. It didn't precede the movie.
My father used to make fun of the day by saying, "If the groundhog sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, it means winter will last another six weeks. If he doesn't, it's only a month and a half."

  • @tomchesley2604

The "science" behind the origins of groundhog's day... when winter is still in full force, the winds out of the far north are dry and cold, so skies are usually clear. As the seasons begin to change, most air from the south collides with the colder air, clouding the skies.
Therefore, clear sunny skies = 6 more weeks of winter, cloudy skies = winter is over.

For many generations, Groundhog Day was about the rodent predicting if we will have a long winter or early spring. It wasn't until this movie came out that Groundhog Day came to mean living the same day over and over again. Nowadays, more people know of this movie's meaning more than they know about the traditional meaning. It's a good example of how times change.

"Anything different is good." This line is profound on many levels.

Phil became a better person by becoming better in every way. He actually had a change of heart, feelings and consideration for others. Maybe he realized that not saving the homeless man earlier was his fault. And he need to make changes. Because he did this, he was allowed to conntinue with this new good life. Very much enjoyed your reaction.

    • @johndough8115
      @johndough8115 6 месяцев назад

It wasnt just the Homeless man. He was allowed to pass, only when he really became Honest, and Selfless. When he enjoyed helping others, and never expected anything in return, for himself. Why he changed, would be a lot more speculative. Phil, as stated himself... didnt even like himself. And if you dont like yourself... others are typically not going to like you either. Over the course of advancing his knowledge and skills... and growing as a person... he would have changed internally, to start to value and respect himself. And once that happened... he started looking well beyond his own little bubble... and into the lives of others. Surely, as he had more and more positive interactions... due to his new internal changes... he was rewarded with a great feeling of goodness and satisfaction, within his heart.
But before all of that, he was still stuck in his old ways... thinking about the best ways to "Hook Up", "Get Rich Quick", and even attempting to end the life.. that he never really fully enjoyed much, in the first place. Its only when he exhausted these options... and realized that Self Pity wasnt going to change things... that he decided to put some effort into various other things / options.
I think one of the more Important messages within the film, is the idea that a Single good man, can make a world of different in many peoples lives. And that being such a man, provides its own rewards. Phil was seen as being completely Alone, Self Hating, and mostly Miserable... when he was still within his own toxic Narcissistic mindset.

At first, he kept failing to sleep with Rita, - and fails to break the loop -- because he kept trying to be a perfect man.
Finally, he gives up on that, and instead, tries to be a genuinely “better man.”

1:00 Groundhog Day is a holiday when they take the groundhog out and “ask if it seen it shadow and it answers back yes or no” and that says if we have a longer winter or not. It’s just for fun, nobody really believes it it’s just for fun cause Ofcourse animals don’t talk… the act of something happening over and over has NOTHING to do with Groundhog Day, the movie just so happens to been based on that day so named it that. Déjà vu is what we call something happening that we seen before in a dream reoccurring which this movie isn’t exactly about that either… more he stuck in a time loop on Groundhog Day… ANYBODY saying that being stuck in a time loop or déjà vu is Groundhog Day is merely referencing this movie when saying it saying ITS LIKE GROUNDHOG DAY just without saying LIKE

  • @mikeshoe74

Why did the old man always recognize him? Why did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math folks on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, and know the town so well, and everyone know him, he was in this loop over 30 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she WANTED to be with him.
The doctor guy, Harold Ramis. Lots of writing producing directing acting etc., movies with Bill. Such as Stripes, Ghostbusters 1-2, and others.
It was a story originally written, very dark, and him being in the loop like 10,000 years!😮😮😮 Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman, reworked it to make it a bit funny!
But u must ask urself? Did he really leave the loop completely? He's staying with rita, in the town he knows everything about, he's going to live there, everyone else knows him extensively...also watch his movie, Scrooged! or worse thought, what if he became the owner or master of his own loop, and now everyone else is in it?😮😮
The real trick is this, the story was written long ago, and much darker. It's a psychology study. Think of every character in this, on screen longer than 3-4 minutes. They all have very distinct and different personalities. Who are u? Hannah is unchanged start to finish, like Rita. And Ashe? Just go back and listen to his comments because he is very much bad Phil!

I have a hunch you may be overthinking the movie. It's about a self-centered man getting punished by the universe until he genuinely, honestly becomes a better, selfless person. At the beginning of his journey he was a fake and still only thinking of what this godlike ability could do for him (money, women, fame, etc.) by using people. He did not truly care about Rita and she could sense it. Then he had an epiphany after many years of being stuck in a loop that he could do good things for others without thinking of himself. Then he could simply love Rita honestly, and the universe rewarded him and finally released him.

@@greenpeasuit But he didn't die at the beginning. There is nothing particularly religious or spiritual about this film. The story is a simple morality play. A bad guy (an obnoxious jerk) gets his comeuppance until he learns the error of his ways and is then allowed to continue his life much improved with someone he can love honestly. He's not dead at the end either. Phil is just a better individual than where he started. Everything is simply amplified for comedic effect.
