Groundhog Day (1993) First Time Watching/Movie Reaction & Commentary - Is Phil In Hell??!

  • This movie is actually terrifying when you think about it. Phil probably lived the same day for, I don't know, ten years?? He didn't age, he couldn't move forward, he also had to listen and see the same things e-v-e-r-y freaking day. It's amazing that this is a comedy but the concept itself is HELL. Now that I mentioned hell, I think somehow he actually descended there. I'm not going to pretend like I understood this movie 100% lol but I'm pretty sure that what happened to him had something to do with hell/being punished. Although, I'm still wondering why this happened on "Groundhog Day"? Why a groundhog? lol. Anyways, I had fun editing and reacting to this (and it took me a long time) so I hope people enjoy it.
What did you think of my reaction? Let me know in the comments :)

I don't think it was a single moment that "broke the curse." In my opinion, it was all about transforming Phil. He needed to grow into a better person, and it took him quite a while to do so! The lesson you pointed to may have been the _last_ lesson he learned, but it wasn't the _only_ one.

    • @env0x
      @env0x 2 года назад +10

i think what broke the spell was him accepting whatever happens and being 100% content with his life. before the final groundhog day, even when he was starting to live near-perfect life he was always dreading the fact that it was gonna reset the next day. but after the spell is broken and it's finally tomorrow Rita specifically mentions that Phil went right to sleep as soon as he hit the bed. whereas the previous time he slept with her he stayed up all night worrying about the fact he wouldn't be able to continue that experience with her. The fact that he was able to fall asleep without worry and 100% content with his day, is what ultimately broke the spell.

The fact that why this happened was never revealed to him but he learned some valuable life lessons is the exact same thing this does for the viewer... it's poetry, it means to you what it means to you. A lot more films used to be like this and I wish more were today.

    • @amandamiquilena

If I'm being completely honest, I have to say (like I said in the video) that I prefer movies that explain things, there's nothing wrong with it since art is very subjective. However, after learning the meaning of "Groundhog Day" I can appreciate the irony in the storytelling of this movie 👍

    • @RonColeArt
      @RonColeArt 2 года назад +2

@@amandamiquilena Groundhog Day reminds me very much of the classic TV show The Twilight Zone in which the plot of so many episodes is based in some kind of 'charma' catching up to someone or a tale of "Be Careful What You Wish For" in which the main character learns a lesson the hard way when some supernatural event changes the way the universe works without there being any reason for it to happen other than to let them see something they're overlooking, ignoring or intentionally avoiding. The famous Christmas film 'It's A Wonderful Life' is also like that, when the universe allows a man a chance to see what the world would be if he didn't exist. The moral is generally the same... that we should appreciate what we have more than we do because we're spoiled, arrogant, ignorant, greedy or anything else that blinds us. Only when a film doesn't make it so obvious, it makes the viewer think about it more and even ask other people what they think about it. 🙂

Amanda! Yes, Punxsutawney is a real town northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The town pictured at the beginning of the movie wasn't just a standard "opening city scene" shot, but it was Pittsburgh. The castle-like glass building the camera held on for a bit is the PPG Center (Pittsburgh Plate Glass), which makes, among other things, the windows for many of the cars made in this country.
Know why Phil didn't want to go to Punxsutawney at the beginning of the movie? Because Phil was a hotshot city guy who didn't want to mingle with hicks (rural folks). Remember when you said they should leave, at the end of the movie? Well, no, because Phil was a better person and found the smaller rural town alluring and satisfying; he no longer needed to be a big-city guy! :)

Any explanation for why it happened would just make the movie worse, I think. It's not about that and it really doesn't matter why it happened.
Phil is a condescending asshole, but he's not really any worse than your average person. He's not a murderer or something. But he still goes through however many thousands of days of selfishness, pettiness, cruelty, bitterness, resentment, anger and eventually suicidal depression and rage before he does what seems to finally set him free - learn. On the other hand, he DOES learn and grow.. eventually. It's kind of a perfect movie; lots of depth and meaning, a pretty serious examination of what it means to be human and what it means to be a good person, but wrapped up in an endlessly watchable, fun, funny, quotable movie. I like it a lot.

What you may have thought was him making peace with it was him enjoying the novelty of doing whatever he wanted without consequences. As the novelty wore off, that's when he he was finally going crazy and looking for ways to kill himself. When he finally decided to use his time well to learn new things and help others, that's when it finally ends. The director, Harold Ramis (who incidentally played a cameo role as the medical doctor) once said he received letters from Buddhist, Christians, and philosophers who all projected their beliefs onto the film. The Buddhist saw it as a lesson in samsara and Phil only ended the cycle of being stuck when he became a better person. I imagine Catholics saw Phil being stuck in Purgatory. I love this film.

He was stuck there for at least 30 years but likely longer. The director said it took 10 years to master 1 thing and he mastered piano, ice sculpting, and chiropractics. On top of that he knew everyone. So, it was at least 30 years but more likely 40-50 years and some estimates over 100 years. On a side note, the original script was written with an ex having this curse put on him.

Good review. And yes, the music is great, really tops off the film and makes it even better. This is probably my favourite film of all time, and I've seen it lots of times. I enjoy it so much, I re-watch it every February 2nd. If you watch the extra commentary on the extended DVD, the late, great Harold Ramis says that Phil was probably stuck in that same day for many, many years, although as with much of this film (like why it happened in the first place), it's left to the imagination of the viewer.
Phil goes from scared to self-indulgent to manipulative to depressed, but it was only when he learned to stop being self-focused and genuinely started to care for Rita and improve himself for the benefit of others (as you said, "humbling himself" and changing into a better person) that he was released from the 'captivity' of groundhog day.

The duration of Phil's real-time entrapment in the time loop has been the subject of much discussion. Ramis once said that he believed the film took place over 10 years. When a blogger estimated the actual length to be approximately nine years, Ramis disputed that estimate and his own. He replied that it takes at least 10 years to become good at an activity (such as Phil learning ice sculpting and to speak French) and "allotting for the down-time and misguided years he spent, it had to be more like 30 or 40 years." A similar estimate suggests that it takes at least 10,000 hours of study (just over a year's worth of time) to become an expert in a field, and given the number of loops seen or mentioned on screen, and how long Phil could spend per day studying, that Phil spent approximately 12,400 days, or nearly 34 years, trapped in the loop. In Rubin's original concept draft, Phil himself estimates that he has been trapped for between 70 and 80 years, having used books to track the passage of time.

Aww, you cut out some of my favorite parts! Phil: "What if you were stuck in one place, and every day was the same. And nothing you did mattered." Bar Friend: "Well, that about sums it up for me." Phil: "I was in Jamaica once. We ate lobster on the beach. In the evening we made love like otters. Why couldn't I have that day over, and over, and over again?" And nothing beats the armored truck robbery and him buying that Mercedes and dressing up like Clint Eastwood in a western. "One adult and one...oh, two adults I guess. My old fiancé, she doesn't remember me." Anyway, you had a great and fun reaction to an American classic. Thanks for sharing.

I think it was mostly about not having the courage to "seize the day" and make a move on Rita when he first met her. He just had such a low opinion of himself and of the world that he couldn't reconcile the idea of someone who could make him truly happy. You may not have noticed, but he tells her he loves her three times in the movie. The first isn't genuine. He only says it because he's trying to get her into bed, and he's starting to go crazy from his situation. The second time she's half-asleep and he's still wrestling with it so he doesn't actually say the words. It's not until she's awake and he really means it that the curse is broken (you may have heard the expression "three times a charm"). Telling someone honestly how you feel about them can be difficult sometimes, but you never know what can happen. Saving yourself some mild embarrassment right now might actually turn into a nightmarish existence of endless regret, just as taking the right chance at the right time could elevate the whole world for you. That's what I got, anyway.

41:42 - I haven't seen this movie in a while and it means something different to me than it did when it first came out. At this point I think of this story as being the 'death' of the old Phil, and his decades or possibly even centuries spent in purgatory. At the end, he leaves purgatory and starts his heavenly existence. He's learned to value people, to love others, and to love himself. It makes sense to me that Phil wants Rita to make a life with him in the town - it's the place where he has made all these wonderful connections. He knows the people (he's been completely disconnected from people in his previous life).

There is no way to accurately measure how long Phil had remained trapped in the timeloop. However, in the novel, he started a ritual of going to the public library to read a single page each day, progressing to the next page the next day. Eventually, he finished every book in the library. Considering the average library has tens of thousands of books and each book can have hundreds of pages, he was trapped in that timeloop for several thousand years.

Since Phil is a local celebrity, it's at least possible that Ned didn't know him at all in high school. If he watched enough of Phil's reports, he could have learned about his high school and sister, and just tried to make him feel guilty about not remembering (or maybe even create a fake memory). It's exactly what Phil does to Nancy. It would have been harder in the 90s, when not as much was online, though.

Phil was not a happy person. Phil was not a nice person. This was an occurrence that allowed him to first understand that his current outlook on life was not healthy. It allowed him to chase every type of behavior he ever dreamed of until he realized that using people like Nancy and, obtaining material possessions provided only momentary glimpses of satisfaction that didn't even last a day. You never saw him repeat any of the selfish acts that he thought would bring him satisfaction. He finally realized that doing for himself never filled the void that was consuming his love and joy for life. So, he started doing for others, helping them and that is where he found his true happiness. It wasn't his love for Andy's character that broke the spell. It was his love for himself as a person that broke it. The last day he wasn't trying to impress her or seduce her. His behavior was no act and she saw in him a guy that she really wanted to be with because he had truly become a great person.

If offered blood sausage, I'd probably have to excuse myself from the table to vomit, but to each their own. Some folks eat insects, including American "news" reporters, so it's not like blood sausage is the worst thing I've seen someone eat. But it's definitely not for me.
EDIT: It's the use of blood as a primary ingredient that my stomach rejects, by the way. The thought of eating it gives me the heebies.

This movie is the origin of the "modern" meaning of "Groundhog Day" . Before this movie , it did not have any connection to a repeating circumstance nor day, in any culture.

He said he was leaving the station, so this was the only chance he had, to win her over. So Fate?? Intervened, and forced him to better himself so that he was deserving of her??
In order to do this, the entire solar system had to be in the time loop,😯😯😯😯

Some of the movie commentary and extras explain what happened according to the book. In the book he lied to a woman to sleep with her and she cursed him which is why he had to live the same day over and over until he actually became a person that someone could fall in love with him, the real him. Supposedly the cures broke after he showed Rita the ice sculpture of her and she kissed him. The fact that it started snowing and it didn't before was a sign that the curse was broken.

Some other suggestions for movies (you've likely seen some, or all of them):
    -Memento
    -Back to the Future
    -The Prestige
    -Pulp Fiction
    -Se7en
-It Happened One Night (1934, a Capra film, one of my favorites... Romantic AND witty, but a bit slow paced by today's standards)
I enjoy your content, thanks for continuing to take the time.

I agree with your conclusion Amanda of why the spell broke. I think the reason it happened to him is he and the groundhog are both called Phil. They said if Phil the groundhog see's a shadow he will go back in the hollow and their will be 6 more weeks of Winter. Phil the man seems very cynical. As long he was going to only see the shadow he was going to keep hiding in this "frozen in time" hell.

Amanda!!! You're smarter than you think you are. I think the third theory you had was that the universe was punishing him. Close enough. The universe was letting him fail at being a good person, until he learned to be a good person. See? You were right. Please do more live-action movies. You're a lot of fun to watch, and you actually watch and don't make jokes. Very enjoyable.
One thing about the slapping? Really? It's funny; it's a movie. And Bill Murray's reactions to the repeated slaps is funny.

So this film was actually inspired by a book that is kind of terrible. The movie is a lot better. I always took it that the groundhog is a tradition about this animal that assesses whether or not it’s going to be winter or spring end the shadow being the self, he didn’t have an awareness of himself and so he was looping in the same day every day. The same way that we all wake up every morning and have 24 hours and do so many things unintentionally

    Love your movie reviews!
Many others have pointed out other things, but I haven't seen anyone answer your question about why it happened on Groundhog Day. Maybe someone did, but I haven't seen it. So I'll offer my theory - it happened to him on Groundhog Day because that is the day he hated most. It was the one day in his life he wanted to skip. I agree with you that it must have been some kind of punishment - but not just for the sake of punishment. He had to relive the day he hated most until he learned to appreciate it. Like someone else said, it was about him being transformed into a better person. And the only thing that could change him was to be forced to live the day he hated most over and over again.
