Indian culture has been notorious for pushing kids into becoming a doctor or engineer, those are heavily respected careers that parents tend to project on their kids. 3 Idiots did an excellent job of pointing out a serious problem with the Indian education system in a way that was actually palatable to the general audience, and did aid in reducing the problem (to a degree [it is endemic in most Asian cultures]). The character of Rancho was actually based on real life education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who created SECMOL, which is much like the school Rancho founded. However the events portrayed in the film are fictional.

Here’s some additional context on why Chatur’s speech is so funny that the subtitles missed.
‘Balatkar’ is the Hindi word for rape. When he said he screwed students, he meant that he _screwed_ students.
The word ‘ghanta’ means hour, and the sentence it was used in means ‘he taught us how to make good use of our time’. Chatur, not being a native speaker, doesn’t see much wrong with replacing ‘time’ with ‘hour’, especially after being revived by the librarian.
Thing is, ‘ghanta’ is also slang for dick. So what Chatur ends up saying is, ‘He taught us how to make good use of our dicks, and we’re gonna go out into the world and r*pe lots of people like he taught us to’.
It also explains how crude and insulting the speech really was, and why Chatur was so angry.

Everyone talks about the outstanding performance of the actor who played rancho.. But for me i was more impressed by the performance of the actor who played the virus school director. For me this movie is one of the best movies of all time.

Some interesting facts about this film
Amir Khan (Rancho) was 44 years old that time and still played the college guy role ...
*This movie is based on a real person named Sonam Wangchuk* ...

such a great movie but many of the great quotes in this movie were lost in the subtitles translation and that maks me sad. They were very simplified in the subtitles
For example during the end he says "How will you recognise me your millimeter has grown to be a centimeter
At 20:31 The real translation here is " We have a lot of exams in life but only one father"

Let's be honest, this is the peak of Bollywood.. It's just so good and legendary it has it's place on the very top.. If I was the IMDB rating reviewer for this movie, I would've given a 10 from my side.. Like, just where can you even deduct any rating? There's just no flaw in it, but only huge impacts on the real world especially in India..
