    I think I would have to be living off-grid full-time for this to make sense financially, but I am very impressed with the technology overall. It's stunning to me to think that, over just the past 10 years, it's now technologically feasible to have a complete solar-powered dwelling off-grid with a unit like this. Nice video if only to learn where this technology is going and how far it has come.

Interesting product though and reasonable price for all the equipment in a waterproof stove box...oh...sorry...solar generator box.

    I'm using the Lycan 5000 to power and run a radio astronomy project using two, 3-meter satellite dishes configured as an interferometer and the low noise amplifiers (LNA) and band pass filters (BPF), the lycan does not cause any issues or radio frequency interference (RFI), that distrupts H1 hydrogen observations at 1420 MHz or 21 Centimeter wavelength.

    The 80A is PV charge current. The inverter charges the batteries at 54V x 80A = 4,320W. The inverter can additionally charge the batteries at 40A at 54V from AC power for a total of 120A at 54V.

    I bought the original Lycan, and after trying 2 units, got rid of it because it wouldn't stay on. It was a "feature" to conserve battery charge, as best as I can figure. Not a good feature when its job was to power my fridge. It's why I ended up building my own set up from components. Haven't had a problem since.

    The bar that is attached to the ground screw is probably for shipping purposes only. Renegy’s video shows removing the bar and attaching a ground wire that is not included. Due to the fact that it is painted steel and not copper, it probably is inappropriate to use as a grounding bar.

    So with the 20 and 30 amp breakers does that mean I could run a 50amp service off of this without problems? So 20amp for a fridge 15amp furnace (no ac) 15amp for lights and that's about it unless you alternate appliances? I like that unit but I'm used to industrial/commercial type equipment so it's looks don't bother me. I think it's great they come out with this unit. It should mean whole house units will be right around the corner if not already here.

    All of these solar gens for RV’s are great! But would anyone really feel comfortable leaving them outside, with your RV plugged into it, and trust that no one will walk away with it?
    I know I’m not comfortable doing that, that’s why I wired a female outlet outside, ran it into my dinette seat, with a male plug out. I keep my solar gen inside my RV, plug my 30 amp cord into the side of my RV, it stays nice and safe!

    If you put it outside and it rains, be aware that a failure point exists where raindrops splash up when they land. They will soak the filter and damp air will enter the unit, possibly shorting it out. So lean or put a board on it.

    Loved your analysis. Ordered one. Pounded in a grounding rod and ran 12 ga copper on inside to the Lycan’s spot. This is also chosen to be at an outlet connected a 20a breaker. I’ve labeled all our breakers super accurately, which are roughly 80% supplied by 20 amp breakers (about 20% are under 15s). Built a temp ramp to get the Lycan 5000 up upon a strong pallet based platform that looks good, robust, & perfectly sized. It arrived safely and everything powered on in the right order. All
    Indicators light up as expected. Spirits are high. Time to charge it on house power. Grab plug. Insert in Lycan bring other cord end over to our 20a supplied outlet. What? The plug on the house side is the weirdest configuration I’ve ever seen. BIG sinking disappointment. If I need a specially configured non-standard outlet installed, why is this NEVER mentioned? I would have ponied up for an electrician far in advance, yet this was never brought this up. Big let down. Consider the expense of a qualified electrician if you just simply want to start out charging by house power before configuring solar later. Big omission in the analysis !! Others will feel the let down, especially if they were trying so hard to set up everything in advance for the unit’s arrival. Had to power off the unit, make an appointment, and wait patiently. It’s a handsome box - so much potential - no illuminated lights for now: it rests in quiet slumber. Just a lack of notification of a simple issue unexpected issue that’ll only shut things down temporarily. Some of you will appreciate knowing about this in advance.

      @Orbi.Lee23 2 года назад +1

      @@HOBOTECH Learned more on the subject that may help on the LYCAN plug configuration surprise issue for the non-electricians out there like me. I confirmed that my outlet IS a 20 amp circuit by flipping the breaker to test. It’s actually THE closest outlet to the main house breaker panel. So that’s a very short wire run - about the length of a hockey stick.
      Apparently typical household 20 amp breaker circuits often just carry the usual series of the typical 15 amp wall outlets we’re all familiar with. But the wiring here at my solar gens parking spot is set to handle up to 20 amp; however it’s cheaper just to throw in mostly 15amp wall sockets so that’s what we often get and don’t question. (Of course other circuits dedicated to mostly lighting DO get serviced by only 15 amp breakers). Exceptions would be circuits for main fridges and large microwave plugs or GFCI bathroom and kitchen outlets that are GFCI and needing the obligatory 20amps. And of course we know what items typically use the 30amp breakers.
      After shutting off the targeted 20 amp breaker I carefully replaced the existing cheaper 15amp “style” outlet with a solid 20 amp outlet that has the plug orientation matching the LYCAN’s provided household charging cable. Outlet was less than $4 at an electrical supply store. After the re-wire the Lycan could be powered up.
      Based on my results, as long as it is a 20amp circuit, there should be no complicating issues of this swap. Go carefully - in my case 2 black go under brass screw bus and whites under silver screws with solid copper ground into green corner screw. Bump in the road has been crossed successfully for less than $4. The Lycan is ALIVE and reporting status to my phone.

I am also Very Happy with Hobos response, as i just ordered the recommended adapter. Hey Mr. Hobotech! I get dizzy watchin' this kind of stuff, so why don't you do an old man a favor & make a video for me. I'm about to retire, and am going to put up a couple of greenhouses. They're going to be about 30ft by 90 ft, & I'm going to dig down 6 to 8 feet & run pipe to warm them, along with a few other tricks for a burst of cold weather, so I don't need power for heat. What I do need is power for lights, & I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. We're pretty sunny in eastern NC, but I'll need to illuminate them for about four hours a day. I'd like to use basic bulb grow lights hung from a basic socket on a power cord type thing (provides unique flexibility). Figure I'll need around 125 of them per greenhouse. They run 12 watts a bulb. What's the most basic solar setup I'd need for that type of rig?

    Hi! Im confused bout if you actually need over current protection from pannels to the lycan . I know it has over current built in for each solar array but am i correct to think thats only protecting the lycan and not the cable from panel to box? So we should have a fuze off last neg conductor to box? The manufacturer is giving me conflicting information. Thank. Love your vids

    Over five grand and it's a half measure. Minimum a 10kw, 5kw inverter with a 240 split phase, or it's not useful for a family home. Given current pricing it'll be well over $15K, and at that pricing might as well go Telsa wall and be done with it.

    HELP! Hi there. I just installed the lycan 5000 tiny house system. Everything worked great until i plugged in the 8 solar panels shipped with the kit. As soon as I flipped the breaker there was loud popping and then smoke came out from where the solar array breaker switch is located. Now it's just dead and batteries are solid red. What happened?

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  6 месяцев назад

      Funny because the Lycan isn't sold by Renogy with 8 panels. Let me guess you bought a "kit" from the rip off artist ShopSolarKits? If that's the case, you're on your own. Renogy probably won't cover the warranty from a 3rd party. Next time buy direct using my links and not a 3rd party joker.
