Babu's comment about potatoes being 'the messiah of the poor' made me think of the Irish Potato Famine. Maybe these gentlemen would appreciate seeing a video on that topic.
Yes! Great idea!
The English landlords only allowed the Irish tenants to have a small plot of land to grow their own food and potatoes do not require a lot of land. You can grow a lot of potatoes off of one plant. They grow underground and downward. One or two plants produced a lot of food and the Irish tenants grew to rely a lot on potatoes to feed them and their families and when the blight came and started killing their plants it was devastating.
@@chiconeededthemoney Yes, *we* know that, but I doubt that Babu, Raeen, and the rest of the CMS team do. It also proves the danger of monocultures, where people depend on a limited number of food sources. This is why, for instance, farmers raising heritage breeds like Dutch Belted cows are so important. Much of our milk comes from only five breeds of cow. If any one of those breeds is wiped out by disease or other disaster, much of the world is in trouble.
@@HannibalFan52 we never learn from the mistakes of the past.
I always remember a quote from a woman that had lived in Fredricksburg Virginia during the big battle there. The corn from their fields had been sent to Ireland to help ease the potatoe famine, and a lot of those Irish immigrated to the US and were enlisted in the armies. "What a tragic shame that the corn went to these men to feed them during their famine only for them to come here and be killed in the same fields that helped sustain them"
Nobody eats mashed potato on its own. 😂 Give them bangers and mash - mashed potatoes with English sausages, beef gravy and some garden peas. Perfect winter food.
Who doesn't love mashed potatoes ✅✅✅
We all LOVE butter too! ❤️
At first they love the taste but then think it a good idea to alter it with spice and chilli to destroy the taste.
Love their reactions. Mashed potatoes are considered a "comfort" food here in the USA. YUM!!
Here in Denmark, it is a stable food.
Yesss!! And Turkey day is almost here!! Love mashed potatoes and Turkey gravy!
I just had a thought! Why not have them try a thanksgiving Turkey dinner.
Raeen called Babu out for his passing a poem off as a song. Raeen, if you hadn't ratted on him , no one would have known, hahahhaaa!
Often his songs come from films . Hard to know which are his creations
Babu made me laugh so hard today! He's always a delight! 💖
They could have offered gravy on the side to try. Love their reactions.
Damn right. You got to have gravy with you mash. Agreed! 👊💯
gravy? what is that? here it is just mashed potatoes, butter, salt, milk and then you can extra other ingredients if you wish, but that is the base, never heard of gravy, that a usa thing??
Or tomato ketchup
@@Belnick6666 American thing, they love putting thousands more calories to everything lol.
@@nickelljohnson3745 Or Chicken and noodles. 😊
It'd be good with a curry served over it, too. Especially one with meat, simmered a long time so the meat falls apart into the sauce. Babu would love that!
Shredded chicken in a savory curry sauce over that...
*Sounds of rushing off to the kitchen to cook*
@@paulleach3612 NOM! Gee, you should be eating by now. Or just finished. 😋
Mashed potatoes. Yum. Great with gravy on it too.
and a bit of cheddar shreds!
This is regular food for me. I have mashed potatoes at least 3 times a week. My home state of Maine is popular for growing potatoes late into the year and the crop can last all winter. The leftovers can be used to plant more the next spring. I had a big smile at their reaction, and now I am going to cook a potato and have it for lunch. Cheers!
Tim Alexander, I absolutely love potatoes myself. I told my husband one year before Valentine's day, to just buy me a 20 pound bag of potatoes, and I would be Happy! ....and he did!! Lol
The same in Idaho & washington
Grated cheese in mashed potatoes would be keeping well within western tradition. We also like to put roasted garlic in, and a little milk in addition to the butter, to make it less dry and a bit more creamy. Also chopped scallion or green onion is nice.
Potatoes are one of the most influential foods that goes well with every meal!
I must agree with Mr. Babu, Potatoes are very cheap and prepared in so many ways.
I use Redskin Potatoes for my dishes.
Yum!!
This is another example of how spoiled that we are in the west. A simple thing like a bowl of mashed potatoes brightened their day. I am happy to say that it humbled me.
Potatoes, eaten by people around the world for ever, yet even collectively, this is Still the most indepth discussion on the Potatoe thats ever happened. lol ❤
😂😂 brilliant
Glad they like the mashed potatoes. Now try potato soup or escalloped potatoes because it has cheese in it.
I enjoy watching them try different foods i like their answers awesome
You must add salt and pepper with the butter.. salt brings flavor, especially on potatoes
In our American home we stir raw eggs into leftover mashed potatoes until it’s a thick paste consistency. Then shape into patties, fry in oil, making potato pancakes. So yummy!
I love potatoes!!! I eat them every day, many times a day. I hate that ppl are under the misconception potatoes are unhealthy and make you fat.
It's the opposite. They are a good source of fiber and antioxidants. And there are SO many ways to prepare them.
They are high starch high carb = unhealthy before the butter and milk anyone in health fitness knows this but you do you they are tasty I’ll give you that
It's not the potatoes that make people fat. It's the butter and gravy they pour on it, or the grease that it is fried in. Potatoes are fine by themselves.
@@valkyrie1066 potatoes are high in what is called simple carbs which are digested faster than a complex carb simple carbs digest very fast and are stored as fat and also causes your blood sugar to surge and than fall and this is before you add your butter and gravy 😱😱😱😱 but can keep eating your taters I’m not mad at you
@@dabbadoo2226 I'll go one better - I eat keto and consume large amounts ghee, animal fats, cheese and meat. I'd dip bacon in butter if it was socially acceptable. Cholesterol is on target. I gave up potatoes, rice, bread, pasta and sugar 3 years ago and am much healthier for it - even with the butter. I don't hate on 'tato eaters either. I love them personally, I just choose not to eat them.
@@TechGorilla1987 shoot I love potato’s also but if I wanna lean out I eat what you’re eating just explaining to these people who don’t know what a simple carb is
I would love to see them try cream of potato soup. I just made a pot of it today. I love their reactions!! 😁🥰
Potato and leek soup! My favorite!
@@georgielancaster1356 I’ve never made it with leeks! I just used sautéed diced onion.
@@georgielancaster1356 But it sounds good!! 👌
Potato soup is so good! 😭
@@stacymoore9836 Potato and leek soup is amazing
It supposed to be eaten with sausages or minced beef
It can be eaten with all sorts of things but it's almost mandatory to have with sausages. It's a match made in heaven!
I love that he wants to add eggs and pickles, he would have potato salad at with all that.
The pickles was a slight mis-translation. Achar is pickled unripe mangoes which is popular in India.
@@aminy23 thank you for letting me know. Love to learn new things.
in Scotland where I grew up, we made sandwiches with french fries ( chips) or even mashed potatoes. It is really delicious with orange pekoe tea. A lot of Canadians laughed when they seen me eat that but when they tasted a chip or mashed potatoe sandwich themselves, they loved it too.I put ketchup on my chip sandwich.
When we had mashed potatoes, here in southern Texas we did the same to make sandwiches with it.
Oh the carbs
Is that a potato burger?
@@barbarajohnson3876 This is my thought. We're keto going on 3 years now.
@@barbarajohnson3876 Whole food carbs are perfectly healthy. Donuts, cake and soft drinks are the harmful carbs. Spud Fit - you can see his videos on You Tube - lived for 365 days on white and sweet potatoes. He lost weight, gained health and fitness (he trined while eating that way) and was in glowing health. The potato has everything except vitamin B12, and even meat eaters are often low in that. He supplemented B12 only. He added a little sauce or salt or curry powder, etc. I believe he had a beer on his birthday or something. But that was it. This nonsense about carbs is being promoted by doctors with zero training in nutrition. Yes, you can eat all meat and lose weight, but you will also lose your health long term.
It's really fascinating to hear how they'd prepare mashed potatoes, probably the most universal version o potato. In Poland we often garnish them with chopped dill, it gives a very nostalgic flavor and works really well with fried eggs and cucumber and sour cream salad, a lunch we often eat on summer Fridays in my house
that sounds yummy! I'll have to try that dinner!
@@valkyrie1066 it's definitely worth trying, that's kinda Polish comfort food and the cucumber salad is also extremely easy, you just slice fresh cucumber, add salt, pepper and sour cream (or natural yoghurt) and chopped dill (we adore dill in my country) 😊
And here I thought you were going to say pierogi. I’ll have to try it your way.
Here in Brazil we put mashed potatoes on hot dogs, amongst other things... It's delicious.
Yuck
Sounds good. And would make it more of an all in 1 meal
Bread is also eaten with meals .. the mashed potatoes is a side dish to go with the main meal
see if our budding cook would like to try making fried potato patties. You can google a recipe for it. I think it takes leftover mashed potatoes, eggs, a little milk,(if necessary), finely chopped onions, a bit of flour. YOu form mixture into patties, and fry in oil till they are brown on both sides and warm/hot thru and thru. It is considered a side dish to go with meat, a vegetable, and salad.
In India it's called "Aloo Tikki", mainly a North Indian dish. In Mumbai, we have "Batata vada" - basically Potato balls where mashed and seasoned potato balls are coated in a chickpea batter and deep fried. You can also have "Vada Pao" or Potato Burgers where the same potato balls are served in "pao" or buns with garlic chutney.
@@candidamulrain4573 Sounds Yummy
In the US mashed potatoes are made by boiling potatoes, then draining them, when steam ends, add milk, salt and butter and mash. This simple side dish is usually served with a gravy made from whatever meat is cooked for that meal. Instead of milk alone some will add sour cream for richness. A little onion powder adds a great deal of flavor without dominating. The potato is a very versatile vegetable for sure. In winter, sliced onion is added and much more milk to make potato soup, usually served with bits of bacon, hard boiled egg, and/or cheddar cheese shreds on top....a good lunch on cold winter days
Also adding Rosemary is mmmwah
Oh yeah. Mashed potatoes, with butter, salt, and milk. Very easy, very tasty. I love to add cheese too! Frequently served here with meat gravy poured over it, rather than cilantro. People also take the mashed potatoes, add some flour and onion, and fry them into pancakes.
"People also take the mashed potatoes, add some flour and onion, and fry them into pancakes."
Wow. I've been around half a century and I've never heard of that!
If you guys have mayonnaise there, add a couple spoons of mayonnaise when you make your mashed potatoes, it makes them creamy, then a bit of milk, butter, salt/pepper, garlic, and chopped parsley flakes.
Pickles and mashed potatoes? First thought "who's pregnant", second thought; I can see that combo.
In Australia, we often eat mashed potatoes instead of rice when we eat chicken and vegetables. We usually only have one starchy food, selected from potatoes, rice, pasta or bread.
With cilantro? I never had mashed potatoes with cilantro.
Soo, Babu just added his ingredients and turned mashed potatoes into the Indian dish he already mentioned that they had. So, the point is? LOL
Babu talking about the different potato dishes he's tried reminded me of Bubba and shrimp 😆
Just plain ole mashed potatoes and they loved it.. I like Buba idea though too. what is Sev??
Shepherd's pie with mashed potato on top would be great
These villagers like everything. Do they really like everything or they are just too polite to admit they dont like things ? Indians have mashed potatoes and as they described, they mix it with spices which makes it delicious. Western mashed potatoes will seem very bland to them.
I believe they have enjoyed. If they didn't they say don't like or only eat 1 spoon
My favorite thing ever is cottage cheese mixed with mashed potatos and butter :) I don't know if they mean the same thing, though, when they say "cottage cheese".
Yes, I also love cottage cheese in my mashed taters, but I also add some cheddar, too (and ham if I'm feeling like some protein). Bake it with some cheddar on top and it's like a twice-baked potato casserole. BTW, the cottage cheese common in India is called "paneer". It's similar to our cottage cheese, in that it's made the same way, but paneer is typically unsalted and cut in large cube forms (about 1/2 - 1 inch cubes). Paneer is also drier because the whey is removed (some whey is left behind in our version - also known as "curds and whey"). It's very firm and can also be fried since it doesn't melt. Also, our cottage cheese sometimes has added cream.
Make them try french bread^^ here too bread is present at every meal
mash the potatoes with salt and pepper, add a bit of butter and one egg...add some parsley or dill if u have and then ure good to go
and they can add any Seasons that they want may your country be blessed
Have they never had potatoes with butter before?
Mashed potatoes can accompany both meat and fishdishes (and a little gravy won't hurt). One can always cut the potatoes to smaller pieces before boiling them - it cuts the boiling time down and makes them easier to mash. A little butter, milk (add some cream too if you want more "luxury"), salt, white pepper and ground nutmeg is all you need for a great tasting potato mash.
One person from Poland commented here and mentioned that dill can be added. Yes, it sure can! I often use a little parsley. It looks nice with some green on it and lifts the flavour just like dill does. If it is going to be served with meat, I sometimes add tarragon before mashing it.
There are many ways to make it and adjust the taste to what it is going to be served with. Personally, I prefer all these little tiny variations. Adding too many spices will make "spice mash with potatoes" instead.
Mash is not really a dish, is usually a side with steak or bangers.
eat the mashed potatoes with meat or chicken!! u will love it
Next to try is toasted garlic butter bread on a French roll.
The Dutch have several national dishes made with mashed potatoes.
It’s called …Stamppot. The three … can be filled in with the type of cabbage your using. There’s another version with onions and carrots.
Smoked sausage or meatballs are used to complete the dish.
2:21 Babu *Chef's kiss*
Pour gravy on mashed potatoes
I love hearing them talk about food and alternative ways of eating it.
Put a little milk too!! Makes it creamy.
Cottage Cheese gives me nightmares.
They are just precious. ❤
They should try poutine. Hopefully the ingredients are available there. It's basically potato fritters (french fries), gravy (like beef gravy or a variation of), and cheese curds.
Next... au gratin potatoes
Don't forget to add the milk! Roasted garlic added to it is really good too.
Bread is served with every meal at my house.
Also Cut Up Green Long onions Give Good taste Too 😁😋💯❤️
Potatoes, peeled, boiled until soft. Fork mashed with simple cream (or milk) and a bit of salt, until smooth. Serve with butter on top, and black pepper on the side that can be sprinkled in as desired, maybe chopped green onions, too.
It's a very simple dish and can be ruined with too much fussing. In America it's a Sunday dinner staple, and also usually served in holiday feasts. There are hundreds of variations, cheese, gravy, bacon crumbles, stuffed potato skins, potato pancakes, an egg on top, onions, garlic, on and on, but they all start with the basic recipe.
Delicious.
You must specify that the water has to be drained once they are cooked. I once gave a Chinese colleague of mine the recipe for mashed potatoes and she told me it came out too runny and was not as nice as mine. Then I realised she had mashed it with the water as I hadn't told her they had to be drained lol
I would prefer the spicier Indian variant that Babu describes over the boring mashed potatoes we have here in the US.
It's called Jeera Aloo (cumin potatoes) if you want to look up recipies. It's not really eaten on it's own, unless it's deep fried as aloo tikki (Potato patties).
Usually it's stuffed into a fried flatbread (aloo paratha) or deep fried pastry (samosa).
First
They never guessed that milk is added in it too. Nice guess though. Most homes eat that everyday. Someone is always peeling potatoes around here in Canada too. Don't add any of those hot spices as it ruins the taste of the potatoes. Instead we use salt or salt alternatives, and a light dusting of garlic powder, fresh onions, and I love paprika alot.
That's your taste. I add cayenne because I think it enhances the flavor of the potatoes. Everyone's taste is different.
Boil potatoes and drain. Add milk, butter, salt and black pepper. Enjoy!
There IS ONLY ONE MESSIAH, and HE ain't a potato, HIS Name is YESHUA (JESUS) and HE IS THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR HIMSELF, so we should respect HIM and give HIM thanks for potatoes and all other blessings.
As has been commented, gravy is a must, as are roast Taters, Turkey, vegetables, wait......
Mash potato is a staple in North American food. Potatoes mashed, add butter & milk. Mix. Serve. But with garlic & chive is woooow
Love with melted cheese in it too and corn, a little garlic, white pepper, gravy and black pepper
I've loved to dip buttered bread into it and the gravy
I've loved to mix salad into it and breaks the starches down well ALSO I've loved it with cottage cheese!
I am an American. We generally eat mashed potatoes with gravy. Garlic can also be mixed with mashed potatoes.
May I humbly suggest the American method of appropriating anything tasty and making it your own.
Oh my gosh, guys, you are making me sooo hungry with this video!
I'm actually going to go fix myself some potatoes stat!
Loved hearing all the different dishes you folks eat that include potatoes, and enjoyed finding out about the variety of spices that work well with potatoes over there.
As for potato samosas, those are my favourite - they're sold locally here as "hot veggie samosas", stuffed with potatoes, vegetables, and spice I find hot enough but likely wouldn't impress you two! ;-)
My ancestors from Ireland lived on potatoes completely.
Maybe that Irish heritage is where so many of us in the west got our love of mashed potatoes.
Anyway, I loved seeing you guys enjoy them so much, and keep up the great work!
We always make mashed potatoes with potato, milk/cream, butter, garlic, salt and white pepper.
I agree with them. Mash potatoes can be made in a variety of ways with a variety of ingredients. In my household it is with just butter. Pepper, etc.... can be added by the individual.
Great video and reactions. My father, Czechoslovakian by heritage, made mashed potatoes with cottage cheese as a special treat for us when we were children. It was absolutely wonderful. It is still one of my favorite comfort foods as an adult. My mother, German by heritage, used left over mashed potatoes to make potato pancakes, with the apple sauce and sour cream, they were amazing. Love this channel as I can identify with the variety of different application of food, and the taste surprises it brings. Example, hot peppers in mashed potatoes? I have to try that!
Babue and Raeen instantly greating geting new recepis re on how to improve the mushed potato one. The have become so smart in this channel, not because they were not, just because a lack of contact with foreign countries, which it is, from my point of view, sad but welcome at the same time. Babu has evolved when it comes to welcome food not from from his area. Raeen can just become a start-up. He has many ideas that make at least me crazy He is so smart as Babu too. People say Steeve Jobs began Apple from a garage or something. Crowdfund and let these people begin selling their stuff. I'd love it. Probably a long shot, buy it is definitely on the table. I've been watching them for about a year. What a wonderful year...
here in the US we love our potatoes mashed with gravy on top or with cheese on top or with sour cream & chives. ....we use potatoes in everyway possible.. boil them bake them fry them and smash them....
I usually make our mashed potatoes with garlic and cheese, and of course butter. Velveeta because it melts, but any cheese that melts would probably work.
In the northern part of Ireland we love mashed potatoes with lots of butter, hot milk and scallions (spring onions) .. and we call it Champ.
How different Indian food must have been before the Portugese introduced them to chillies
What about potato croquettes? 😋
It's common in India, they call it Aloo Tikki.
They should try cheese and mustard mash with sausage and onion gravey
Mashed potatoes with chilies and turmeric sounds amazing! Don’t worry about eating it in a particular “western” way since so many countries have their own variations. Why not start a mashed potato style for your own village? Ever since Native Americans introduced the world to potatoes we’re never run out of new ways to eat them. They may be the perfect shuttle for whatever your heart desires.
It's fun that I've started to pick up words from this series like aloo, masala, balu.
I love potatoes. My favorite dish is potato gratin with lots of cheese and fresh whipping cream and at least 3 layers of it ;). It's also important to add enough salt and pepper. The potatoes have to be sliced thin. Not more than 2mm thick.
Mashed potatoes are a staple in the US. A or are eaten with gravy. They try so many things separately it would be nice to see their reaction to a typical American dinner. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, a side of green beans & a dinner roll with butter. Or meatloaf & mashed potatoes with gravy and a side of corn. The corn needs butter and salt and pepper on it. 😋
Bangers and mash or aka Sausages and mash with gravy and fry onions
The great debate is..lumpy or smooth? Blessings all 🌸🌹
That wasn't proper mashed potatoes. The real stuff is mashed until smooth, and butter, milk and salt and pepper are added, and all mixed together in a smooth and creamy texture.
I crack an egg into and season leftover mashed potatoes, mix well and fry them in butter or bacon drippings and brown them well and eat them with ketchup or hot sauce. We call them potato cakes
"no one wants to refuse a thing like butter" this is a universal truth, everyone believes this. except for vegans.
`I've never thought to eat mashed potatoes for breakfast, but it is a good plan. Babu's recipe sounds great and he isn't wrong about putting cheese in mashed potatoes, we do that! but the other recipe I can't imagine because I don't know what 'stone flowers' translates to. can anyone help with that?
We eat it not alone but with meat and it goes good with rice or corn with gravy but not alone.
Those looked dry as fuk. Need to make them creamier. Don't just mash up some boiled potatoes and throw butter in them.
Don't the Danes or one of the Scandi countries have mashed potatoes with near 50% butter?
You need to do the Irish dish with mashed potatoes. Tons of butter and what greens?
I love mashed potatoes and I eat it regularly. I'm not gonna lie when I say I have similar reaction everytime I eat it.
When it comes to certain foods sometimes less is best. I think the villagers are discovering this. Which is wonderful
He was right when he said mashed potato should be authentic. However, other recipes with potatoes are great too. They would love Hasselback Potatoes.
It’s called mashed potatoes for a reason guys. It’s only potatoes with minimal spices and butter. If you add your additional items, it’s no longer mashed potatoes, it’s something else with potatoes. Also, mashed potatoes are not a meal, they are a side dish to a main course. I’ve never heard someone say so much yet say so little. I think Babu just likes hearing himself talk.
I live Idaho, the great potato capitol. Potatoes are so versatile with so many different kinds, but mashed potatoes = comfort food for me. I had no idea there were dehydrated mashed potatoes until I went to college and nearly gagged on some. Ugh!
Polite young man waits for the older man to finish his thought, doesn't disagree, just builds on his thoughts. Not how I was raised, my dad likes when I disagree with good reason.
Mashed potatoes and gravy with meatloaf cube steak definitely turkey. They should always show them a video of how people enjoyed the food and maybe what it's made of since it is new ingredients to them or a new experience
I love potatoes let's make potatoes club potatoes sweets dish pies ect
