Agreed. If they saw how simple this was to make, they would make it at home for their family members. You need to go a step beyond just letting them taste new foods and say "wow... this is good... it would be good for old people and young people alike." That can get boring. New day, different food to taste. Same reaction every time. In fact, why not have your cook give them a cooking class, so they can make these things themselves?

With pre made pre packaged, processed , animal proteins processing ,most urbanised people don’t have a clue about seasonal products ,real freshness , GM challenges,farmers subsidies, chemical seed protection against plant diseases and it goes on .Ignorance should be the “amazing” part about current food knowledge. This shows about cultural diversity and exploring foods of the world .Effectively travelling via taste even if a lot has to be compromised by varieties ,season availability , different cooking machines and philosophies ,regligion ,but it’s interesting stuff.
I think they did have it, Babu and Raeen both mention a sweet thing on top that tasted a bit like honey. They may not have tasted maple before, so if not, it being similar to honey is a good guess!

It was a great breakfast food in the morning for my family when I was growing up as a "common man" in the Southern/Midwestern USA: my parents had little money, and French Toast could be easily made up from common household staples: Heat a greased skillet/frying-pan, mix up a batter of milk and eggs (with a little vanilla extract and some spices like cinnamon), dip sliced bread into it (my mother always collected and used all the old bread from the week or two before making French toast, which was not being eaten and was in danger of going stale), and then lay the battered bread onto the heated pan to toast, flipping the toast as it browns. We usually ate it with butter and maple syrup on top, or apple butter, or a mix of sugar and spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, etc.). I think you can probably top it with clarified butter and anything sweet that's available, though, and it'll work: honey, jam or jelly, perhaps a sweet chutney. We usually just ate the French toast by itself, with water or (rarely) fruit juice (orange juice), because my family was poor and there wasn't a lot of food available for us to serve with it back then, but in a breakfast or family restaurant, it's usually served with side-dishes of sausage or bacon, scrambled eggs (or other styles of eggs), and maybe hash-browned (fried) potatoes and/or chopped fresh fruit, with orange or other fruit juice to drink. But, that's a much bigger breakfast than my family could afford when I was growing up, except as a treat for a special occasion! (A French toast breakfast for my family was more often just a chance to make frugal use of old bread before it got stale!) Definitely good stuff, and I'm also glad they liked it! :)

I have cooked French Toast in many resteraunts. And now I cook them for my family. I smiled big when I heard that they were going to serve it to a child to get them to eat eggs. It is very good. I grew up in Maine and we had fresh Maple Syrup to add on top. Also, we would sprinkle on a little powdered sugar. The recipe I use is easy: 3 eggs, 1cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, and a dash or two of cinnamon. These ingredients have a tendency to seperate, so keep a wisk close by. For best results do not soak the bread, but instead dip just enough to get the outside wet.
I've never had French toast without at least syrup to go with it. I personally like to make French toast with raisin cinnamon bread and then put syrup or a berry compote on top
When I was a kid my grandma mixed white sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon in a small amount of hot butter and small amount of boiling water and mix it just a little then spread the mixture on the freshly made French Toast . It was so good but nowadays I use cinnamon, butter and real maple syrup served hot.
*Someone send them pure maple syrup, STAT! Real honey works great, too!* Adding cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of agave syrup in the eggs gives a whole new taste to it.

I think they pick up on emotions fast based on their music videos.
And French Toast is very easy to make from common household staples in the USA - I'm betting it's just as easy to make with ingredients found in their village: roti, clarified butter, milk, and eggs seem like familiar ingredients to the common men, and I imagine they've got some local sweet chutneys, and perhaps honey and other local ingredients that would be delicious as toppings for French toast! :)
Try it with cinnamon and a touch of vanilla in the egg batter then top with butter and maple syrup. Though some top with powdered sugar or berry syrup and fresh fruit

French toast is a dish that was invented to make use of old bread (similar to how fried rice came about for the East). I believe there's some similar dishes in the region of India/Pakistan/Afghanistan/Iran where old roti is soaked in a curry to use it before it goes bad.

Great Indian Empires like the Mauryan Empire had great trade with Rome so people back then would have known about after these big empires fell there would have been a significant drop in trade as well.
These guys know how it's made by just one taste...extraordinary. That's a sign of a future chefs. They can totally open a restaurant of there own and I would go. I can't get enough of these wonderful men, they are so amazing, such good hearted, well polite men and very humble and down to earth...and wise.
Seeing as they were not familiar with the syrup, I'd be interested to see them try some maple-related products like maple syrup or maple candies. The closest thing they keep relating it to is honey, and I'd like to see what they think of a 'honey' made from tree sap.
You should show them a video demonstrating exactly how maple syrup is made starting with tapping the trees and collecting sap, and then give them some genuine maple syrup to eat with French toast or waffles or pancakes. They would probably be amazed that watery liquid that oozes out of leafless trees in the winter tastes so good when it is concentrated by boiling.
Since they like French toast they should try a Monte Cristo, it’s a hot ham and cheese sandwich with French toast as the bread and it’s dusted with powdered sugar and served with either jam or syrup, it’s my favorite sandwich.
It's not right unless you put butter and you pour maple syrup all over it, and I always have 2 slices of french toast. I have had french toast a thousand times, and I always put some butter and maple syrup on it. I would not even eat it without the maple syrup.
To really do it right, you need a drop of vanilla extract and a little bit of cinnamon in the beaten egg. Then top with melted butter, warmed up maple syrup and a light dusting of powdered sugar on top. And for special occasions, a few strawberries or blueberries tossed on top, or on the side.
I’m one of the few people who doesn’t like syrup . Then again my mom was poor and I thought it was normal to eat it dusted in granulated sugar so I guess it’s what I was used to . Someone in the comments posted a really good idea on another way to eat it and I’m going to try it ! No sweetness at all and it sounds fabulous!

We eat french toast at our house quite often. We usually have maple flavored syrup. This morning, since the bread already had garlic flavor in it we decided to do savoury toast. I had cream cheese and ghost pepper sauce on mine. I'm not sure what my wife had on hers, but I know it had cream cheese as well. Very tasty!

Have they tried Maple Syrup yet? I remember my first time tasting it, I wasn't used to the different foods here in Canada and I felt much like your star guests here, everything was new to me.
I hope they got some maple or fruit syrup to eat with/on it... Otherwise it can sometimes be a bit dry / plain. Typically we'll have a couple different syrups folks can use on it. Or it might be served topped with fruit & nut and powdered sugar. Or sometimes we'll serve it with warmed cinnamon apple sauce. Love french toast. Basically bread dipped in an egg batter with a little milk, usually some nutmeg & cinnamon as well. Then lightly friend in a pan, on both sides, until the egg mixture firms up and it gets slightly browned and warmed through. Then served hot, with the aforementioned syrups, fruit, apple sauce, etc. Good stuff.
I would absolutely LOVE to see them learn about the Roman Empire or even Alexander the Great since his empire stretched from Greece all the way to India.
Alexander the Great in particular sounds like a fantastic topic! I'm sure these fellows have at least a passing familiarity with Alexander, but I'm betting it's probably a topic that doesn't get as much attention in India as it would in an old-fashioned Western school (I think I'd be surprised if Alexander the Great gets any mention at all in most schools these days, and it's a fascinating topic which shaped the modern world as we know it today!)
I assume you did the sugar and egg mixed together to dip the bread in before setting it on a griddle or hot skillet and cooking it till the egg/sugar coating is cooked. What I did not see was syrup and butter to top the finished toast off. The best syrup is real maple syrup with real butter spread on the finished toast before adding the syrup.. We treat our french toast more like pancakes as far as toppings. Good Video.
Eggs are so versatile. Nice to see them try soft boiled egg with soldiers and serve it in the cup with a tea spoon to stir (Let them do the topping and provide the salt and pepper separately).
French toast is so easy to make. I did read the Wikipedia article about French toast. It is of Latin origins believe it or not. The first recorded recipe is pretty much what you use to make french toast today. I will have to try honey as a topping next time and see how it tastes.
Babu wants to make it. Soak bread in a mixture of egg and a little milk. You can add ground cinnamon for health or a little vanilla. Don't soak it so long the bread falls apart. Then fry it in ghee both sides. The topping can be made many ways using ghee jaggery honey jam syrup or what you like

I should've known Babu would've been wise enough to guess right off the bat what the ingredients were. However, he should not have had to guess, & even when he did, his suspicions weren't verified. Also, they should've been told that it's eaten all over the world - esp America - usually w/ syrup; not dry, the way they had to eat it. I just think things from around the world should be presented to them the way they're actually enjoyed in real life. I dip my bread in milk, egg and a little nutmeg mixed in. I fry it in oil until it is crisp.

Have they tried Maple Syrup yet? I remember my first time tasting it, I wasn't used to the different foods here in Canada and I felt much like your star guests here, everything was new to me.

I hope they got some maple or fruit syrup to eat with/on it... Otherwise it can sometimes be a bit dry / plain.
Typically we'll have a couple different syrups folks can use on it. Or it might be served topped with fruit & nut and powdered sugar. Or sometimes we'll serve it with warmed cinnamon apple sauce.

Basically bread dipped in an egg batter with a little milk, usually some nutmeg & cinnamon as well. Then lightly friend in a pan, on both sides, until the egg mixture firms up and it gets slightly browned and warmed through. Then served hot, with the aforementioned syrups, fruit, apple sauce, etc. Good stuff.
Raeen describes a "garnish" that is sweet as honey, so it sounds like either syrup or honey was poured on top before they received the dish.
I would absolutely LOVE to see them learn about the Roman Empire or even Alexander the Great since his empire stretched from Greece all the way to India.
Alexander the Great in particular sounds like a fantastic topic! I'm sure these fellows have at least a passing familiarity with Alexander, but I'm betting it's probably a topic that doesn't get as much attention in India as it would in an old-fashioned Western school (I think I'd be surprised if Alexander the Great gets any mention at all in most schools these days, and it's a fascinating topic which shaped the modern world as we know it today!)

I assume you did the sugar and egg mixed together to dip the bread in before setting it on a griddle or hot skillet and cooking it till the egg/sugar coating is cooked. What I did not see was syrup and butter to top the finished toast off. The best syrup is real maple syrup with real butter spread on the finished toast before adding the syrup.. We treat our french toast more like pancakes as far as toppings. Good Video.
Its a very traditional european sweet that dates to the middle ages. It's called "Poor knights". Its almost 1000 years old.

French Toast is one of the ways we use bread that's gone stale in my home.
Bread pudding is also a great way to use stale or dried out bread.
When you serve French toast, you must also serve Maple syrup and butter to put on it and milk to drink with it, it is a package.
I actually had no idea my childhood dessert my mother used to make was the fancy French toast....LOL
Eggs are so versatile.
Nice to see them try soft boiled egg with soldiers and serve it in the cup with a tea spoon to stir (Let them do the topping and provide the salt and pepper separately).

Try with honey or maple syrup. There are many ways to put stuffs with French toast.
I usually have French toast with maple syrup, and follow by drink hot black coffee.
French toast is so easy to make. I did read the Wikipedia article about French toast. It is of Latin origins believe it or not. The first recorded recipe is pretty much what you use to make french toast today. I will have to try honey as a topping next time and see how it tastes.

Babu wants to make it. Soak bread in a mixture of egg and a little milk. You can add ground cinnamon for health or a little vanilla. Don't soak it so long the bread falls apart. Then fry it in ghee both sides. The topping can be made many ways using ghee jaggery honey jam syrup or what you like

I should've known Babu would've been wise enough to guess right off the bat what the ingredients were. However, he should not have had to guess, & even when he did, his suspicions weren't verified.
Also, they should've been told that it's eaten all over the world - esp America - usually w/ syrup; not dry, the way they had to eat it.
I just think things from around the world should be presented to them the way they're actually enjoyed in real life.

When I have french toast, I either put maple syrup, honey, or fruit on top.
