That bike text skip - game assumes you to buy a bike and glitches when you don’t.
Pokémon RB is held together with duct tape and wishful thinking.
At least the English versions.
The Japanese Blue version is quite solid.
I remember both clearly. Yellow changed my world because "pikachu " could talk lmao
Patsy Patarchy amazing. Maybe. As long as you don‘t consider the inhumane hours the devs had to pull for that.
Just, wow
i just cant believe they dont allow the bike glitch but they allow the RNG manipulation... id argue thats way bigger of a glitch.... from slightly faster text to removing all important RNG.... i dunno... they both should be out of a glitchless run
The fact any of these can be "glitchless" is hilarious considering how broken these games were.
Yeah, like when Nidoking abuses the X Accuracy exploit.
"Glitchless" means "glitchless". There is a separate glitch category.
It’s not a glitch, it’s a feature
@@TheCandoRailfan not really. red bar and bike text skip are both glitches.

For anyone curious, the current record for this category as of today is 1:45:21 held by pokeguy.

The whole time they thought you had to press A in 1/60th of a second
When all you had to do was just hold it down?
How did nobody else try that?
I knew that since I was a kid wtf lol
Well, it's not like this is World of Warcraft with millions of people actively searching for new methods to speed up the game. There are only a small handful of people that actively look for new methods... like... 4 people.

Which is why I'd like to see his take on Twitch Plays Pokemon :v but that has nothing to do with speed running so, tough chance
ruclips.net/video/Az0PSkKQzpk/видео.html
Oh yeah, Salt kills it man!
based on my knowledge of Gen1, glitchless isnt actually possible
Seriously. Even the most basic things are broken. Critical hits and focus energy being completely broken, never thawing from being frozen unless your hit with a fire type move, the combined special stat making psychic types invincible and OP, stacking leech seed and toxic, the move counter, etc... Gen 1 is just an absolute broken mess
@@joshuah.4496 *badge* 👏 *boost* 👏 *glitch*
@@joshuah.4496 getting a stat boost is causing a glitch because when one stat lowers or gets raised, every other does by one
Ya it really isnt possible lol the debate on 'glitches' here proves it. Gen 1 is broken & not just for the glitches, let us remember the infamous 'ghost is strong against psychic!!' and the only ghosts are weak to psychic w/double poison typing 🤦♂️
The Nidorino that Prof. Oak shows you in the intro scene also has the cry of a Nidorina; it's literally impossible to play the game without encountering an error
Kind of baffling that the ridiculously inaccurate in-game timer was not abandoned earlier.
Probably because people either didnt know if it was accurate or people were only usually able to prove their times with the timer.
Noah Also, while not as important for accurate record keeping, seeing that ending time is such a rush as compared to the external timer.
Ingame timers are good enough, until all the records are ties.
Speed Demos Archive rules are so dated. It was good at the time but the speedrunning community has evolved so much that no one takes that website seriously anymore.
Right now the RE:2 Remake speed runs run off of an in-game timer since depending on the hardware it's played on can result in drastically differnet times...I believe.

I'm not terribly interested in speedruns, but I always feel a pang of rage when I hear that a small rule change destroyed the previous records.
It seems like this should be a 'new category' thing rather than a 'nope all of this didn't happen, retconning it.' thing.
Sciver Zero shit happens, too many categories split the player base too much.
Soul Elavation, you right
@@soulelevation9696 Who gives a fuck if there are more speedrun categories. Clearly you've never worked towards a goal as insane as a world record, otherwise you'd be able to empathize with the original poster's point.
You just have an addendum that they were previous records using the old rules. A record is just history once it's beat, so whether it was a record on an old rule list or the new one doesn't matter if there are multiple new runs that beat it on either rule set. Your Old run may be delegitimized under the old rules, but that doesn't mean you aren't part of the history if it was a legitimate run under the old rules, it just means you have to Stay as a historical run, or get gud and compete for a new world record under the new rules, or beat your old record.
the former record isn't erased from history, this has never been a problem. Proof is the existence of this video and its view count.
I just spent 30 minutes of my life on this, and honestly no regrets brother.

I guess that's part in due to people drifting apart after high school.
Chris Beach :')
Ooh!!!
I can’t tell you how much I’ve been waiting for this!
Although there were a few mistakes, like “1 hour and 57 seconds” and how DV actually stands for Determinant Value, the entire video was really great, as usual.
I just need a video on Megaman X, and I’m good
victikirby15 How have you watched the whole thing already?
It's Determin*ant* Value, but yeah.
My boy flexin', yeah we need Megaman X
Wil ly I watch most videos on 1.5x, maybe he does too
Are DVs something like IVs in current pokemon gaming?
21:38 It is so ironic that even if you totally destroyed the previous world record *the game still tells you "You still have lots to do,"*
It's not ironic at all. The entire point of the speedrun is do as little as possible, as fast as possible. So you have more to do, the better the record is, therefore it makes perfect sense that the game says you have lots to do.
@KelpTheGreat I guess you don't get what irony means then...
You are so knowledgeable about everything speedrun-related. It’s relaxing and a joy to watch your videos!
"He did his run on emulators, I'm sure that won't cause any problems later on."
I literally laughed out loud for almost a minute. I've watched enough of your videos to know it's going to cause a lot of problems.
Speedrunners are so paranoid
That "controversy" is dumb. I mean, an actual console can still be modified, and you could also just blur the video a little and say it's a console.
Consoles have background noise that can’t be spliced, emulators don’t. So for an rng heavy game like Pokémon it makes sense to make sure that spicing is impossible.
it's more to prevent TAS cheating
Also emulators may have _very_ slight mechanical differences that could give _slight_ advantages, even if it would be nigh impossible to spot. Forcing everyone to use the same thing in theory prevents that.
If this problem actually exists or if the solution fixes anything is another topic that i myself am not familiar with.
These WR videos are so well put together and produced
and half an hour long too. one person probably spends a month editing that

Nostalgic feelings aside the one thing I love about gen 1 that'll probably never leave for me or change in any way is the brokenness of them.
Wilfred Cthulu The glitches were half the fun.
I agree, I love the glitches
When Gen I was actually out, most kids only knew about the MssingNo glitch. People would no doubt occasionally come across other glitches, but as a kid: 1) you wouldn't understand what happened (in some cases you might not even realise it was a glitch), 2) you wouldn't be able to replicate the glitch and 3) you wouldn't spread word about the glitch out further than your close friends because a lot of people didn't have Internet back then (and for the people who did, it was painfully slow).
The best you could do is keep buying the gaming magazines in shops and hope one of the readers had discovered a glitch, written into the magazine writers about it, and the magazine decided to write about it.
Basically, I'm trying to say, yes the games are full of glitches, but in practice as a child the experience was relatively glitchless. The games did, for the most part, play as intended. I know now that the games are quite ridiculous, but at the time it didn't seem like that.
The thing that confused me most was that I understood the type chart even when I was very young, and seeing things like Razor Leaf be "Not very effective" on Gyarados, or Leech Life be "Super effective" on Zubat was confusing. But I could tell from the actual damage they did that the game was calculating the damage correctly, it was just the text that was wrong. And I got Pokemon Stadium a few years later and in that game they displayed the correct text.
A gltich I did come across by accident was in Viridian Forest I died from poison the same time as the last Bug Catcher in Viridian Forest saw me. I fainted but the exclamation mark still appeared above his head. Then when I went back into Viridian Forest a wild Slowbro appeared immediately. I was like WTF at the time, and now i understand what happened, but at the time I had no idea what happened, why it happened, and how to do it again.
I played on an emulator at 15 with some knowledge a well known bug, the Ditto glitch, though yes you are right, it was glitchless my first play through (forgot that last bit)
The vast majority of people don't play Pokemon because it's a balanced RPG. Smogon-heads who farm natures and perfect EVs for fun have a hard time understanding why people loved those old ones so much.

It's insane, but now the WR for red/blue stands at 1:44:03 held by Pokeguy84. 2nd place is 1:45:05 by hwangbro. Former record was obliterated by over a minute in one of the most optimized speedruns where basically no stone has been left unturned.
We need an epic 5 year follow up video forsure
Saying a run is very optimised and no stone has been left unturned is ignorant. There is always a way especially with a run that long.
@@PoliPantev Have you looked at the WR run? Do you see where the timesave is concerning routing? Because every decision made in the run has been analyzed to death to the point that if you're aiming for WR your odds of completing a run are almost zero. The luck in the WR itself is incredible to the point that you could run the game for many, many years and not beat the WR time.
@@dark_rit its optimised for now. But finding new strats can lower it. And history has taught us, that more often than not a time can always be lowered.
@@PoliPantev A new strat can happen, true. However, its very unlikely given how deeply analyzed it is at this point. The new strat must also be something big to compete with this insane WR run from Pokeguy, which lowers the chance even further.
People did say it before and were wrong. But i think Pokeguy finally killed Red/Blue for good with this run.

This video is so epic, dude. Brilliantly researched and a very cool story, I was stuck every second. Thanks for explaining one of the great stories of Speedrun history.......... Werster is the best by the way ;) Been a fan of his for a long time. WONDERFUL upload. THANK YOU SALT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah you know what? i aint sleeping tonight
Definitely not
thanks a ton for including a doc of all your music used *and* the timestamps
I've never been interested in pokemon speed runs. But you have the most engaging story telling voice, and frame your stories so well that after I turned this on to be mindless background noise at work, 20 minutes later I realized I had gotten no work done while watching the video. I had to pause it if I was going to get any work done today. You could narrate paint drying and I'd probably be hooked.
Congratulations, I'm a new subscriber and now have a new channel to watch during my lunch breaks
Holy, found your channel from a reddit comment. Decided to click this video cause I like pokemon. Just checked to see what the current record is. SOME GUY LITERALLY JUST BROKE THE 2 YEAR RECORD YESTERDAY! The internet is a crazy place.
at 2:20, blue version doesn't increase your chance of getting a sandshrew. Sandshrew is not available in red version without mew glitch or trading.
A 25% chance is an increase over a 0% chance. ;p
Elvarg RS has a point.
i dont understand why sandshrew is necessary when there's plenty of others who can learn cut
In Red/Blue, there really aren't that many early-game Pokemon that learn Cut. And, crucially, the only other one you don't have to go out of your way for you could get by the time you need it is Paras, which has a very low encounter rate. (15% in the deepest part of Mt. Moon, less elsewhere.) Yeah, you could get an Oddish/Bellsprout on Route 24, but it's further out of your way than Sandshrew and is also a 25% encounter like the quicker-to-access Sandshrew. I guess you could just reset your run if you don't catch a Paras in Mt. Moon, but I'd hazard a guess that that would get very tedious very quickly.
hmm i guess that kinda makes sense. but considering everyone seems to do red, i can't see it being a better alternative! I'd be willing to hazard a guess that the top runs more than likely have paras caught?

You do these really well man. Big fan - glad you popped up on my recommended.
i want to see a TASbot no major glitches run where they just manipulate every little piece of RNG to go their way. Constant critical hits, every item is a rare candy or better, every bad random encounter is skipped etc. I wonder how far the RNG manipulation can go with a TAS
There are no random item drops in Pokemon, no.
Random is actually not very random in pretty much any application.
Like, numbers in number generators have been shown to have bias as well and that numbers can get chosen inconsistently.
RNG manip' abuses an underlying component of the game that's tracking your inputs which then effects how the game decides to use its RNG component.
There is not one for gen 1 but there is one for gens 2-4 on tasvideos, here is the gold/silver one which features a frankly astonishingly massive amount of RNG manip, from quick claw triggers to high power magnitudes to critical hits: tasvideos.org/564M.html
Then y don’t u do it before anyone else can?
@@fab8920 probably no coding/no idea where to find a TAS expertise. or not strong enough hardware.
Very solid work! As a huge Pokémon fan it’s interesting to see the progression and optimization of these games. Would also love to see you either cover the remakes or the glitched runs
that top gear track literally swallowed me in nostalgia. when I heard it I recognized it instantly and stopped the video just to listen to it again lol
Dude yes! I was thinking thr same!
I absolutely love this dude's videos. Keep up the great work Salt. We need you brother!
