  • HBO and the Ringer’s Bill Simmons is joined by Ryen Russillo to count down the 12 most memorable moments in the NBA of 2019, including the Chris Paul-Russell Westbrook trade, Damian Lillard's and Kawhi Leonard’s series-winning buzzer-beaters, and Magic Johnson's decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. Then they look forward to 2020 and discuss who will be the best player in the NBA at the end of this season.

That's the Toronto crowd chanting "KD" as he's taken off the court. I was there chanting with everyone, but only after Serge and Kyle reminded us to be human. The tangled roller coaster of emotions that KD put us through from the beginning of Game 5 to that point was the most memorable aspect of the year for me. as a pure basketball fan The vibe felt like what gladiator fights in the Colisseum, or chariot races in the Circus Maximus must have been like. There's no other modern sport where the individual players and their unique personalities matter so much. A big point in KD's favour is that he's forgiven us - the Toronto crowd there that night.

35:35 killed me. “This was like watching the Karate Kid in real time with Twitter.” Perfect analogy for the 2019 WCSF Rockets/Warriors series post-KD injury. Everyone I was talking to went from expecting Houston to take advantage of the injury and win the series to endlessly praising Steph after Game 6 and eviscerating the Rockets for the next week. Just a hilarious and insightful moment by Ryen Russillo.

The real speculation about the Finals is that Toronto should have won in 4. It took the greatest drought in the history of the Finals for them to lose Game 2 on a last second Iggy three. (I think he missed his next ten) They won 13 of the first 16 quarters and totally outplayed the Warriors. It also would have allowed us to have Klay and KD this year.

Nice list but you better check the percentages on Dame’s deep 3s in that series Bill. He hit at the same clip from 5+ feet behind the line as PG was hitting on normal 3s. He’s been practicing those bombs since the 2018 playoffs to counter the blitz double teams he was getting - and now you see Luka, Trey, Harden all pulling from deeper too because it works. It’s an efficient shot if you practice it

As a Canadian with crazy deep respect for the Lowry-era Raptors, it is very unlikely that they'd have won had Klay not blown his ACL. We can debate and argue it over beers, but if you look at what Klay was doing in games 5 & 6, Toronto would have needed a 97% level performance ALL game to win G7. Highly unlikely that they could have delivered. Congrats to them for the title, but it was hollow with the injuries (also heard that someone named KD was hurt too).

I think his point was that Toronto was trying to win their first title (while GS won the year before - he mentioned it wouldn't be 2013 Spurs because of their previous titles) and the Raptors had one year only to make it happen because Kawhi would be out the door for sure if they lost. And then you have no chance to come back and get it done the next year, which the 2016 Warriors very much had, with or without Durant.
