If you’re asking why he signed essentially a vet. minimum it’s because it’s the most or close to the most he could get out on the open market, he declined heavily his last year with the Lakers where he made $46 million. He was only going to command a few million on the market, he determined at this stage of his career he wanted to stay in LA for his young family.
I don’t understand what you are alluding to by asking me to explain that but if you think contracts always only go up in value you’re mistaken, you have to set that market every time your contract is up, it’s not different than a guy getting injured and losing value going into free agency

It's like the current players set the market for all players in the open market. It's like Comps when it comes to housing.
