One of my favorites. My Mom was in a mood for one years ago..realized only had chocolate cake mix. So she used the glaze, canned peaches with the cherries and chocolate cake mix. Was fantastic..just goes to show you can switch to other combo.
I've cooked almost exclusively with cast iron for years but the most I ever paid for any of it was about $40 for a 5 quart Dutch oven. My frying pans have become utterly smooth and non-stick with daily use over the years. I was curious about the Smithey brand you used in the demonstration. Recently I dropped my 20 year old 10 inch frying pan for which I originally paid about $5 and it shattered into pieces. I was devastated but I replaced it for about $35. I note that the Smithey version cost $160. Why is the Smithey so much more expensive? Part of the cast iron allure is that it is relatively inexpensive. All cast iron gets better over time; especially if it's used every day like mine.
You must have read my mind... I've been thinking about making one of these in my electric skillet. I did it once or twice years ago but now I'm not sure what recipe I used. Pineapple Upside Down Cake IS definitely classic - and delicious! Thanks for the video!
I gotta admit - I'm already intimidated by the upside down motion! I'm totally gonna make this for my mom, you make it look so damn easy! Wish me luck July 31st, 1:41p --- Literally just flipped this cake out onto a cake plate and everything accompanied the layer! Can't wait to take a taste! Thanks for the fun with my mom!!!!

My Gram made these all the time… Haven’t had one since she passed. I did notice that you used a white cake mix.. Hers was a yellow cake mix… I guess it doesn’t matter really but everything looked great but the cake being really white tripped me out a bit.. ❤
Do you think the ingredients that you added to the box cake mix would work with a gluten-free box cake mix? Would it come out with the same consistency and texture? Or do you think it’ll just be a big old mess?

We use our Griswold cast iron collection, you’re right, they get better with age too. Our kids have already “claimed” their favorites. 😃

What happens if you don’t have a cast skillet pan? Can you use a regular pan?
I used to make these all the time in a regular cake pan. You can melt the butter right in the cake pan in the oven. They were delicious! 😊
Yes. It doesn't have to be in a cast iron pan. I can't stand them anyway.

The only way to make it. In my family we make the cake from scratch but everything else is the same.
Use light brown sugar, so it doesn’t look burnt. I made this mistake 😢

Boxed cake mixes are disgusting. You're already adding most of the ingredients when baking from scratch, why use some chemical laden substitute?
