Amazing Solos ...from an amazing guitarist Видеоклипы
It's a mystery to me,that Criss Oliva is so underated, you never see his name in any of these dumb ''top guitar players''-lists,despite the fact he was a true master of his craft. Not only did he was highly skilled(just listen to the crazy tapping in ''Summer's Rain''),he also had fantastic tone and most important,he knew how to write melodic solos & memorable riffs(the ending solo on ''Believe'' stuck in my head for days, after I first heard it.).Most of today's Metal shredders are just wanking around and know all scales/modes but have no fucking clue how to write a memorable solo or they just chug monotonous riffs on 7/8-strings witout any sense for melody.R.I.P. Criss Oliva.
totally agree, criss is an incredible guitarist
greekfreak1980 I believe that criss is near the same level as Dimebag
greekfreak1980 Way better than Randy Rhoads.
greekfreak1980 to me it doesn't make any sense till today why Chris never been mentioned about his unique playing and killer riffs.
He was one of the best of a very good bunch of players , but should get more acknowledgement. He was a fucking superb player ..
i knew criss way before he become famous we were good friends ....great person...and an unbelievable guitarist
lucky bastard :P
amazing
A real genius , silk and steel , a giant hole into the metal world
Sava rules!
Unreal ! That's cool man ! I feel lucky to just be alive at the right time to enjoy him and his bands masterpieces ....
I met Chris Oliva in 1989 at a show they did in Sarasota Florida on the beach. I got to the venue early that afternoon in time to watch the soundcheck and met Jon and Chris Oliva. We chatted for a minute about guitars, then Chris invited me and my girl to their hotel room where we smoked up and chatted about music for about an hour or so before the show... 2 months later, I went to Tampa to see Ronnie James Dio and ran into Jon and Chris again. I was blown away when Chris remembered my name!! ...I miss you man, you were a huge influence to me and one of the greatest guitar players on the planet.
He is a genius! Its sad he died early..
@@gandhiabad9402 yes 😔
Great story brother,to die in an auto accident, what a waste😢rip
Great story man. I missed Savatage by 1 day in Oklahoma in 87, went there to see Armored Saint/Helloween/Grim Reaper and found out who had played at the venue the night before. Chris's death allthough not similar but reminds me of another incredible guitarist taken too soon and that was Dave Prichard who was the guitarist for Armored saint and who's style is kind of similar to Chris Oliva, both taken from us way too soon Dave at 26 and Chris at 30. Just imagine what the metal world would sound like today if we had all those amazing guitaris back making incredible music from Hendrix to RR to EVH. I saw Dave that night and was blown away at how amazing he was and I had already seen RR & EVH many times. Btw saw all 3 Dio solo tours with Vivian Campbell and thought he was a monster on guitar, those were incredible shows. The 80's were magical. It's super cool Chris remembered you. Rock on Brotha..
No human will ever match his MONSTER tone.
I miss him.
+The1WhoKnowsTheTruth EXACTLY!
***** Yes.....we sure did. I sometimes think of what he would have done musically since 1993 if he was here. So much great stuff we never got to hear. Just very painful to think about.
+The1WhoKnowsTheTruth And we lost him to a drunk driver... I hope someone gives him daily reminders of who he killed. Criss was a genius.
Wormweed I don't think that POS really cares bro. Survives with minor injuries, seven prior DUI convictions gets vehicular homicide and then does 18 months of a ridiculous 5 year sentence for killing Criss. I would like all of us to give the fuck some daily reminders of who he took from this planet.
Shows you how much our justice system sucks! The POS should have been rotting in jail.
Chris was a great friend. He sat next to me in Mr Dort's Earth Science class. We worked together at the Brass Knocker... I will never forget riding dirt bikes, cruising in his old Dodge, and hanging in the chicken coop. It was clear that he would be a star even in those days. He was always humble and a great human being. R.I.P. Criss
I had Mr. Dort too. '81 Tshs.
I am from Syria, and no matter how far my country is I used to listen to this legendary guitarist! He almost mad the guitar talking!
I love this guy and in my opinion he is the best man who ever played a guitar.
Full of emotions very professional and ahead of his time.
When war started in Syria, one of the first things I took away with me before leaving was his photos and albums.
Shame criss! You left us very early!
That is awesome Bassam. I pray for you and your loved ones that you endure your countries troubles.
Thank you for your kind words
Bassam Naji That's really awesome. Stay safe friend
Death 666 thank you,
Savatage is one of the most popular banda in the middle East after Metallica. Fingers crossed for Syria
I don't know why none of the players of his era aren't mentioning him. He is clearly at the top of the top in terms of talent, tone and capability and second to none. If Summer's Rain was written by Slash or EVH I am sure it'll be considered as a top 10 solo, not only in metal.
And his tone? This guy could teach ANYONE how a guitar should sound like and how to use the pickups properly.
This world is f***** up but Sava fans know who are you and will always do.
RIP
Criss the GREATEST Guitarist ever!!!!!!!!
R.I.P Criss, you are missed.
John Randall Banks R.I.P. is return if possible, I suspect?
Muzykosłuchacz rest in peace
Muzykosłuchacz rest in peace
John Randall Banks yes he is. everytime i see something about him my eyes are going wet instantly.
+Tina Trussell i know...
Holy hell....I'm 41 years old and been playing guitar since I was 8 years old. I've never heard of Criss. I'm very ashamed of myself. This guy was amazing!!!
Welcome to the real king !!! Savatage RULZ!!!!
Great Level like Alex Skolnick 😊
Same here, I'm 41 years old now too 😊 and I discovered him lately. I don't even listen to music that much anymore , but this guy's playing and the band turned me on. I wondered who these guy were they are my besties now. I guess have found something worth listening to.
He was the best and still is
this dude got no mention in any american guitar mags when he died, and that was a fucking shame. this guy was an epic, epic ripper and that's a fact.
i rarely use the much overused word 'epic' very often, but i used it TWICE to describe mr. oliva's guitar skills.
Jon Gill best EVER is a steep call, there were and are a lot of rippers of equal skill...
but to say he was up there with the very best is a fair statement.
I fully agree with you man, Savatage is the very Best and nobody can play the way Criss could. He was unbelievable
Back when mountain king was out, they didn't fit into the 3 minute format on MTV. And for some odd reason, he wasn't featured much in the guitar mags.
Pan tera Could not have said it better!!
+Pan tera Very well said. \m/
One of my inspirations , Criss plays like an angel.
Criss and Randy hands down the best ever
+Dani Tigerlily That's so true, I don't think it will ever be possible to eclipse a once in a generation talent like Rhoads, but Chris should be up there with the elites for a lot of reasons. Imagine him and Randy dueling up there in the sky. Insane
and Andy LaRocque
Dude that's the realest shit I ever did read
Every comment here is SPOT ON
Randy, Criss, Andy, Vito are/were all LEGENDARY
Criss reminds me of RR with his solo technique. Rip Criss and RR
Damn this guy was a phenom...What an amazing sound he had
Ok, so I discovered this amazing guitarist and his band today. I've been listening to metal since I was 7 years old so why haven't I listened to Savatage before?!? :(
Great band!!
+Erik Helkimo they are by far the single most underrated heavy metal band of the 80's.glad you found them! be sure to tell your friends savatage rules!!!!
+Q*bert nah man dont be like that I mean sure they were uderrated and Criss was a genius, but what about bands such as WASP? They were underrated aswell...
+John D blackie lawless' W.A.S.P. was and still is a big, well known band to arise from the sunset strip back in the day, with big commercial success.
they have sold over 12 million copies of their albums.they've charted the billboard with at least "blind in texas" that i can recall right off,and they have "i wanna be somebody" that was ranked in top of 100 of all times on vh1 and they still tour and chart overseas.these guys are a great band but millions have known and appreciated them for many, many years.one of the absolute best bands to come out of the west coast imo.probably only one of the few that are still rocking actually to come out of the sunset strip.
W.A.S.P. is still making money and living well.
Savatage (an even better band imo,way above the rest actually) didn't make it.to make money Jon Oliva had to move on.they left metal and formed TSO where they are making it big.it's still cool to have Jon Oliva's pain and his solo stuff........but man, there was nothing like savatage.that band was something extra special.
+Erik Helkimo It's not long since i discovered this band either... Savatage and Virgin Steele are both great, and very underrated. They both deserve so much more attention.
+Erik Helkimo I'm jealous because I know every song of them.. I wish I wouldn't know them yet.. lol
Wow...I never realized how good this guy was!...saw him at the mirage in mpls '92....WAY UNDERATED!...his solos are a composition unto themselve!...not just a bunch of mindless wankin'
Lpts of emotion in his playing. He absolutely LOVED the guitar.
I seen Criss Olivia do the best guitar solo I've seen in my life. The concert I went to was at the State Fair in Dallas, TX. On the bill was Loudness, Savatage, and the headliners were Stryper. Loudness opened. They rocked. Savatage came on and blow me away.
For Criss' solo he started playing his solo the struck a cord and his guitar reverbed, he set on a stand and he walk of stage and got a second guitar and with out missing a beat did another solo on that guitar while the first one was still going. Then did the same thing as he did on his first guitar. So now he has two guitars going with two different cords on each one. He the goes of stage and gets a third guitar. He finished his solo with such precision I'm really surprised they Stryper even went on after that. Best show of my life.
DallasJman Wierd...I remember seeing Ronni Le Tekro from TNT doing that same thing in a guitar solo once.....
Stephen Petrovich in the legenday show in Japan. T.N.T. rules!
So awesome
Wow
LOl, I love Savatage and Stryper. Stryper ain't afraid to go on after anybody.
Criss had a unique style to play, nobody ever matched that 100% truly one of the greatest Guitarplayers in the world.
It's 2019.
Criss you are missed.... R.I.P brother.. :(
One of my all time favorite players!.....RIP
you just don't get that kind of emotion in todays players.he was a true musician.
Kevin Carpenter these days all about speed and more technic you can display. people listen with their eyes not ears ,
LAYUCHEBI very true.sad but true.
Well said !
Even players back then didn't have the emotion Criss had.
I was Lucky enough to see Criss in the early days when they were Avatar in Brandon Florida and still miss em as he is one of the BEST guitar players that ever lived!
Criss was a super great, incredibly talented guitarist. He was also one of the most humble, kindest, funniest, and friendliest person you could ever know. Criss played from the heart more than anything and with his amazing talent he had a style that stood ahead of the pack. RIP "Criff". We all love and miss you.
I had the privilege of meeting Criss Oliva at a signing in Detroit one.month before his death. I have been a huge Savatage fan my whole life, since their very first album, and there was never no other guitarist quite like Criss, who's guitar playing was so powerfully driven from deep within his soul that you could feel his passion emitting through every note. Criss is greatly missed, a true rock legend if there ever was. My heart goes out to his brother Jon.
He was the metal Dave Gilmour
the 3 people who disliked this can dive down some stairs.
You aren't fit to hold his guitar.
NFL is rigged dive down some stairs lmao!!! I’m gonna use that one.
How can anyone dislike Criss?
I would line them up and slap them like the 3 Stooges, that they are.
amen
@@MrSkulldrag Because they're ignorant.
Criss was one of the best ever! The solos he created were legendary compositions! Gone way too soon....R.I.P Criss
One of the greatest guitarist of the past 40 years. Savatage was never the same without him.
Criss unjustly is one of the most underrated guitarists in history...huge influence
R.I.P LEGEND.. the world miss you man.. :(
You know that in Heaven there's a hellava band. Great guitarist is an understatement ! All time favorite. It only takes one asshat to ruin it for everyone. 18 months ? No justice indeed.
Heartbreaking loss. His work will live on forever. Amazing talent. ❤
Christopher and Jon were the best brother duo in metal!! RIP brother of tampa❤🇺🇲🇬🇧🇦🇷🇺🇦✌️✌️I saw savatage...gone too soon ...power of the night💪👊👊👊
Real legend
My fav. ❤❤
From Cairo-Egypt
Best at riffs, licks, and solos.....when you rule all 3 your the best ! Chris has no equal !!! Savatage RULZ !!!
There is no doubt that Chris Olivia was a very gifted guitarist who knew how to speak through the incredible tones he could produce with the guitar. What David Gilmour is to classic rock, Chris Olivia is to heavy metal. I was lucky enough to see Savatage live twice. Chris mostly played his solos on stage a little differently than on the studio albums. It was a pleasure to see and hear him play. One of the best in his field.... Way too young to go on playing in heaven...
I'll say it one of the greatest guitarists to walk this earth.
Absolutely incredible.
Happy Birthday Criss......RIP....YOU MOVED THE WORLD...
Can't tell you the number of times as a young kid sitting in their front yard listening to Chris practice.
the making of this video is a GREAT service to the metal comunity.
you're basically keeping the memory of this guitar god alive, he is one hell of an underated guitar player and deserves to be known..
every poser can lick dimebag's shoes, chant Randy's name or scream van halen, steve vai, malmsteen etc..
But few know this beast, very very few believe me.
After him there is Jeff Waters from annihilator, the diference between the 2 is that Jeff is still alive and working his ass off to remain a mark on the metal comunity because otherwise he would be even more underated than he is now.
Another name worthy of mention imo is Ross the Boss, co-founder and guitar player of the band Manowar.. and many others
I guess what I was trying to say was....had he lived longer, he undoubtedly would've gotten to be an even better player with more techniques that we hadn't seen from him during this short time we got to have him with us. I'm honored to say that listening to his music has made me a better guitar player. Even after playing his stuff for years, it's still difficult to capture the same emotion and technique. Nothing but respect for the man.
I always wanted to play like him. I always loved his god-like solos. He was taken way too early from us. I'll miss you Criss. R.I.P 1963-1993
Absolutely One of the Greatest Guitarists.Sorely under appreciated and greatly missed.R.I.P. Criss.
He was a great player....I was lucky enough to see them in 79 at the local roller rink
One of the great guitarists in music. I am sure he must be jamming with the likes of Hendrix, Rhodes, Stevie Ray and others that have passed onto the next level. His spirit lives on in his beautiful soloing. Blessings for his family too who must have been shattered when he went. But everyone gets reunited and at least they will be with him again. Criss is a musical inspiration and one of THE most under-rated guitarists of all time.
I will forever miss and remember this amazing guitarist. Everyone talks of Randy Rhoades and Jimi when they talk of lost shredders... But for me, this loss was quite impactful.😥🙏🤘🎸
Raw talent, exquisite tone and melody
I have listened to metal 30 plus years and would have to say Chriss is probably the most underrated and perhaps the best giutar player to have ever lived.RIP Chriss!
It's really ironic. Growing up my favorite two players were Alex Skolnik and Chris Oliva. It's sad one day Alex would have to replace the fallen Chris. They are my two favorites without question, because the WAY they play. There's just something about how they make the guitar talk. It's not just about how many notes they are putting in a measure, but which notes. Chris will be remembered forever....a legend.
Couldn't agree more brother... quality not quantity
My 2 faves are them too.Not a fun fact : Alex had a car accident while playing sirens out loud in his car in early 80s :/
Growing up in Florida, Savatage was a huge part of my music taste. Such a shame when Criss died on his way back from Livefest. His memory will live on as one of the best guitar players ever
A VERY under rated guitarist! Did some super catchy, tasteful leads...was bummed the day he passed...RIP Metal bro!!
Yes for sure, he was one special talent!! So dedicated to his craft, I can only imagine how much more he could have brought to his fans! So sad, I miss him and Savatage deeply!! ✌️👍🤘 God bless his family and friends 🙏
Criss was an amazing guitarist with a great combination of chops, melody and feel. To say he is missed would be a huge understatement. Lord knows how much more he would have accomplished if he were still alive today. Rest in peace Criss, and thank you for all the kick-ass music you left behind. Savatage's Edge Of Thorns will always rank among my top 10 favorite metal albums of the 90's.
Very Gifted GUITAR PLAYER PROBABLY MOST UNDERRATED OF ALL TIME.
I was lucky enough to see Savatage open for King Diamond in 92!!! They were smoking! on fire!
So very Underated, and a tragic loss❤️🤘
New to Savatage, I love this guy, RIP, such a great talent taken from us too soon! His tone is not from this world!!!
It took me almost 2 decades of playing rock and metal music to hear about this monster of a guitarist for the first time. What a feel, what a tone, definitely comparable to Rhoads. Like Randi, it’s a shame he left this world too young.
gone 23 years, and wer;e still crankin all his music
HANDS DOWN the most underrated player in his day....and to THIS day as well.. a TRUE legend IMO..there arent many players that compose solos like him except for the other LEGEND randy rhoads.. ( from a LONG time fan of him and the band ) MISS YOU . \m/\m/ !!!!!!!!!
The best guitarist i ever heard. Tone, melody, phrases, explosion, sweetness, techinque, feeling. What to say about him. HOW is he not mentioned in interviews. Why to live in a world that he is non apreciated. Rip.
Listening to and reading all these wonderful comments about Criss and remembering him, I'm in tears. He was such a nice down to earth guy.
My Favourite Guitarist, His Power of the Night (85)work inspired me instead of being a young music listener to pick up the Guitar at very young age. Criminally Underrated Talent. Rest In Heaven Criss.
My son has just discovered this group which he found brillant , I have been listening to hard music for so long , what can I say ? Criss Oliva was just incredible 🎸⚘️. In France not known like many other groups.😈
Awesome collection of Criss’ work. He is my favorite guitarist.
I grew up listening to classic rock, hard rock, and metal because my dad decided to give us the best childhood 😂 BUT Ive heard soooo many metal bands over the years & for some reason my dad failed to show me Savatage 😞but very recently when I discovered them myself, he was raving about them and Criss Oliva and how criminally underrated they are. So moral of the story: I love them, and I am sooo sad to see how Criss was and is neglected by music publications. P.s. I forgive you dad for this blunder, we all make mistakes
Criss Oliva was one of my favorite lead guitar players !!!!
I think 24 Hours Ago is my favorite!
Chris we still miss you and we always will! R.I.P.!!
No matter magazines and mainstream! he is a really Great player! a guitarist that his tone and playing is still unmatched! and for sure a huge influence on generations of guitarists even today! a guitar hero! a legend! to me he is in the same league with Roads Van Hallen Malmsteen!
He is one of the Most Amazing Guitarists I have Ever Heard Such Amazing Skills
Criss talentoso, Savatage siempre va a tener mi reconocimiento.
The best and the greats guitarist 👍👍👍
My Absolute-Favorite #1 band of all "Savatage" and I miss Criss the best guitarist ever was and left us with the best guitar passages ever. I hung out with Criss in San Francisco in '93 before he passed away...we talked for almost an hour just him and I...shared with him how I could feel his life flow through his work. He gave me a coin which I still have. He only had 1 steel pick left which he had custom made! Criss was very cool and humble to have shared some time. Thanks Criss and Savatage!
Seen them when they first started and have loved them ever since
Hands down one of the very best.
Genial, uno no se cansa de escucharlos
Magistrales.
i saw Savatage many times at the old Rocket Club in Tampa..always put on a great show...had to see them..especially Criss live to fully appreciate how great he was...RIP Criss...
Me too! :) One of my homes away from home.
Also bands like Stiletto and Stranger, RIP Ronnie Garvin.
One of my all time favourite guitar players.
He had so much potential to become a highly acclaimed guitarist. My dad wanted me to take guitar, but my fingers are too short. I want to thank you for taking the time to do a tribute for Criss Oliva.
I'm 45 grew up right in the middle of all this play I too am a drummer, classically trained and weened John Bonham & Dave Lombardo! MTVs influence was unavoidable ,don't let the hair and clothes fool you. Criss was a great player in a decent hard rock band, they were well thought of in the hard rock /metal scene. Criss's influences are obvious from his gear to his licks the band was ahead of their time in some regards and lagged behind in others. I saw 'em in 88 w/Dio and Megadeth! So there.
Some guy on Craigslist down here in Florida has one of his Charvels for sale. So I looked him up. Can't belive I've never heard of the band before being 39 and listening to and playing guitar for 25 years. What a shame how he died. 30 years old with all that talent and some fucking drunk asshole (6 prior dui btw) takes his life and walks away uninjured. But he did get 18 months in jail. There's justice for you. That guy is probably still alive drinking everyday and the music world loses out.
I just looked him up. I think he is still alive and I didnt know hes a black guy.
gone too soon RIP, amazing guitar player!
gutter ballet is just about as perfect as you can get.
For the style of music that they played , he had that guitar completely mastered.
Amazing. criss oliva forever !
Excelente Trabajo 👍
This guy man he is was too good fantastic one quality he had he could make extremely awesome riffs like iommi and blackmore.RIP
the best for ever!!!!!
one of the Best
like x1000 great collection of just a small sample of his works. My personal favorite song is chance it has a little of everything gives me the chills everytime I listen to it.
Maestro de la guitarra...nunca moriras siempre presente en nuestros corazones....eres el mejor....viva tu musica...estos son los mejores recuerdos...maestro....
There are no words ...just rest, in peace.
was fortunate to have grown up in tampa bay area when savatage was hot, they played garages and parties (sava shows) around palm harbor, tarpon springs, st.pete before they became popular worldwide, i met the brothers through their close friend barry lampe (of blessed memory) i even owned one of criss's laney amps and cabinet back in the mid to late 1990's, both jon and criss are down to earth people, i even met alex skolnick in st.pete at the bayfront center through jon, way cool as well, we discussed our favorite guitarists, of course criss was discussed, and talked about how he was a really good choice of replacement guitarist, alex skolnick is no slouch, and lives up to criss's legacy as best as possible.
Great guitar player, with the perfect mix of melody, emotion, and technical skill. Can certainly hear influences from Rhoads, Uli Roth.
Definitely Chris was way Before His Time In my mind Chris will always be one of my top favorite
Guitar players of all time ¡!!
Thanks Chris & R.I.P.
Nice compilation. I only saw Savatage with Criss once (on the EOT tour) at T.A.Vern's in Milwaukee. As a young guitarist, I had just been turned on to Streets and GB - EOT had just come out. The show was great (even if missing Jon). After the show I saw Criss standing by the stage talking to someone. I felt bad interrupting (I was young 20-something) but I just had to say "Great job & thanks!" and shake his hand. 2 months later he was gone. So sad. I mourn the great songs we'll never hear.
suuuperb compilation! thank you!!
Met him in Texas late 80s great dude RIP criss
