    Am I missing something here? I have had several comments about showing the King's Gambit. Has it come back into vogue now? I mean, I WILL do some vids on it, but want to cover the Ruy Lopez. Perhaps I can do both openings......let me know what you all think.....

      King's Gambit often opens up quick! Better be tactically sound and know how to fight off early queen attacks.

      Backyardprofessor>>> The King´s gambit is great fun because of it´s tactical sharpness. If you want the same fun in the Ruy Lopez you´ll want to play the Marshall attack or the Open Lopez. Oh yes nearly forgot the Schliemann-variation. That´s also sharp stuff.

  • @CraftMonk

    Mr. Backyardprofessor>>> You forgot one little important detail which is common for all the main line closed Ruy Lopez-positions and that is as White to play the pawn to h3 early on in the game to prevent all Bg4-pins.

  • @Avygeil
    @Avygeil 10 лет назад +2

    9:12 "You can castle"
    No, actually you cannot without losing the e5 pawn.
    6. ... 0-0 7. Bxc6 dxc6 8. Nxe5 loses the pawn.
    You might ask why this tactical shot does not work at the very beginning:
    1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5...
    Because there is a concrete tactical counter-measure:
    5. ... Qd4! 6. Nf3 Qxe4+
    regaining the pawn and Black already equalized.
    Now that White castled and there is a rook protecting the e4 pawn, this tactical counter-measure does not work anymore.
    16:10
    9. d4 is premature because of Bg4.
    White should play 9. h3 as a preparatory move.
    The Ruy Lopez is a really complicated opening with a lot of subtulties in the move order.
    For example, you played 7. ... 0-0, which is OK and can lead to the Marshall Gambit, but this gives White opportunities for some move order tricks.
    The most classical approach is 7. ... d6 and then play continues 8. c3 0-0 9. h3.
    Notice that Black does not play 8. ... Bg4 in this case because White did not yet commited with d4, and it would cause some tempo losses.
    For example 8. ... Bg4 9. d3 0-0 10. Nbd2 Na5 11. Bc2 c5 12. h3 Bxf3 13. Nxf3 Qc7 14.d4
    White managed to archieve a classical Ruy Lopez position where d4 was played anyway, but as a bonus he traded the important white-square bishop of Black for one of his knights...
    The Ruy Lopez is really really tricky.

    9:24 But black pushing the white bishop back actually puts it in a more central line of attack after black castles. Why would black want to do that? Please explain.... Thanks coach!

    Backyardprofessor >>> You should become familiar with all the main variations in the closed Ruy Lopez set-up. They are: 1. Zaitsev-variation (The sharpest) 2. The Smyslov-variation (The safest) 3. The Breyer-variation (The most rocksolid) 4. The Chigorin-variation (The most adventurous).

    I have been studying this opening past three days. with only one book you have to play a computer and it always does a variation or it turns into a French defense.

    At 6:30, the black could take the pawn on e4 with the knight.

  • @japtube6635
    @japtube6635 10 лет назад

    As far as I'm aware you're playing the main line without h3, wich means that black can (and should) play ...Bg4 instead of Na5.

    Hello, thankyou so much for making a video that is so understandable for the mortal beginner, all the other videos are so .... mmm... lets say technical and advanced that you dont get it why a lot of pieces move, they just take for granted its logical... but as you can imagine, their logical vs my logical are waaaaaay different. Congratulations and thanks once again.

  • @gregorys5329
    @gregorys5329 10 лет назад +3

    There were several small problems in this video, like the lack of explanation for moves like Re1, b5, and why black can't just take the e4 pawn at any moment. There are very concrete reasons why all of these moves have to be done the way they are; nothing to do with initiative (unless you want a very drawish position, in which case you can take on e4 as black).
    However, for quite a while, you were indeed following main line (even though the explanation definitely could've been better). Unfortunately, you went wrong when you suggested to play d4 immediately. If white plays d4 immediately after d6, then black has the move Bg4, which will lead to a very unconventional position where white may not be 100% comfortable. Black will have lots of pressure on d4 in this line, and as white it'd be best to avoid this. This is why white must play h3 after d6, and then black can continue with Na5 and c5 (Nb8 is also a popular line). Please note that after an immediate d4, black will almost certainly not play Na5 because this would be the same position I described, except black would be down a tempo since white didn't play h3. Also note that in different move orders where black has played an early d6, white shouldn't be worried about Bg4. Bg4 is only a problem after d4, so only play h3 right before playing d4. If Bg4 is played before d4, then white should play h3 and if Bh5 (holding the pin), then white can play d3 and eventually pressurize the bishop with Nd2-Nf1-Ng3.

      Excellent ideas. Thanks for sharing. I am always willing to learn more about chess, as I truly don't know enough yet, nor maybe I never will. I appreciate your ideas, and actually have some games showing some of the ideas you post here. Good luck in your games too amigo!

      Gregory Starr >>> Actually the pawn on e4 can be taken at any moment. That´s why taking right after White castles leads to the open Lopez. A sharp line for both colours. White has the amazing piece sacrifice with 11. Ng5 which was introduced by Karpov and developed to a fantastic degree by Kasparov who played it as White against Anand in their Worldchampionshipmatch in 1995. Another great game by White is the game Judith Polgar vs. Mamedyarov played in the Bled Olympiad in 2002, where Polgar with White Slaughters Mamedyarov in a game that looks like the fried liver-attack starting with a knightsacrifice on f7. The sharp stuff for Black is when White doesn´t play 9. Nbd2 but 9. c3 and allows the razorsharp Dillworth-attack starting with 9. ...Bc5 The move 9. Be3 isn´t White´s best either. 9. Nbd2 is the big move in this variation.

    1:59 ... the reason you don't play f6 is not because it is "passive," it has more to do with the fact that it IMMEDIATELY LOSES to the sac Nxe5! I swear this guy must be rated about 800. He needs to learn the basics--tactics and even just counting material --before worrying about specific openings and throwing out words like passive, imbalances, initiative etc (without really knowing what they mean). I really hope someday he meets his goal of getting good at chess--then he'll look back at these videos and laugh at how bad they are --like every other experienced chess player who sees them does. I will give him credit though--they are entertaining!

    I spent hours and hours sifting through chess videos trying to improve my game. While all of the videos were informative I found them to be nearly unwatchable. Many had technical problems with the audio, some were so dull I couldn't sit through them and a majority of them used computer/robot voices which I find not only annoying but downright rude. It seems these people are in such a hurry to collect "views" that they give us impersonal crap and disguise it as tutorials.
    This guy (the Backyard Professor), may be a little hard to follow at times and appears a bit scattered. However it is his passion for the game of chess that causes this excitement and actually makes his videos not only watchable and informative, but highly entertaining. He is a breath of fresh air in the field of chess tutorials.

    I think it is either pronounced "Roo-ee" or "Righ" not "Ree" lol I can tell you are saying it quickly because you are unsure of how to pronounce it, you could have just looked it up, I assume you have a computer because you made a fucking youtube video lol
