LA jettisoned their BIGGEST defensive liability, Gavin Lux. They now have a full season of Edman and, if necessary, Betts and Edman can swap positions. Compared to the Yankees, LA's defense is 10x better. LA is not in any danger of letting a championship slip away due to defense.
Lux was above average defensively at 2b. His main liability for the Dodgers is that he lacks positional optionality. He can really only play 2b and can't hit against lefties.
Defense isn’t the Dodgers’ greatest strength, but they are by no means a BAD defensive team. They have talented utility players who can play all over the infield and outfield depending on the need any given day.
@@Publiclighthouse That’s true, Torres 18 of the 93 errors or 19% of all NYY errors and his lazy try at catching the relay in WS game 1 allowing Ohtani to take 3rd & eventually tie the game to send it to extras was a part of the loss. His replacement Cabrera in critical game 5 8th inning when he couldn’t corral the ball hit just out of his glove allowed two to be on base.
@@timowns2 Even though similar during regular season (Dodgers 88 errors, Yankees 93), in the 2024 postseason Yankees had 9, including 5 in World Series, and 3 of those in game 5 + a missed base cover (Cole) and Balk / disengagement (Weaver) not counted as errors. Dodgers only had 4 errors, 1 each in NLDS and NLCS, and 2 in World Series.
The Dodgers may have the best starting and bullpen pitching in all of baseball. That sounds like defense. Plus, next year, they're gonna sign a 3rd baseman from Japan who hits so many HR's, it won't matter if he even owns a glove.
Murakami not a doubtless upgrade. Muncy had a higher slugging rate last year than Murakami and the same OPS. Muncy an MLB injury season while Murakami a full healthy one.
The Dodgers have so much positional flexibility, defense shouldn’t in theory be an issue. Friedman & co. have made sure to acquire players that can play multiple positions over the years so Dave can mix & match as need be: Mookie can play the entire outfield. Muncy can play 1st, 2nd & 3rd. Rojas plays the entire infield CT, Kike (if he comes back) & Edman can play all over. Austin Barnes catches and can play 2nd. Teo & Conforto as corners are fine plus they can DH sometimes if Ohtani needs a rest day. Freddie and Ohtani are the only 2 players that don’t necessarily have 2nd positions but they’re set at 1B & DH respectively. Team will be fine. They’ve just got to stay healthy the entire year because that’s the biggest issue, NOT defense.
If anything, the age of a few of their key players could become a problem down the line. Freddie Freeman had a great post-season but his regular season numbers were down. He turns 36 this year. So does Miguel Rojas, who was hurt often. They'll have to manage work loads & deal with injuries without a doubt. Also will need to develop their young talent.
Freeman's OPS+ last year was 143. I think 25+ teams would take that out of their first baseman. Rojas doesn't really need to play more than 60-80 games to do what they need him to do. Not a dodgers fan at all, but they have so many built in redundancies that 2, 3, even 4 "key" pieces can get hurt and play 80-120 games and they'll still be the best team in baseball.
Dodgers had terrified all the owners in MLB. Their spending power has exceeded all the expectation. The chance for other teams to win World Series has been slim. They’d rather save some money.
Muncy was above average defensively last year at third base. And the Dodgers have made it very clear to him if he doesn’t stay above average he will be moved.
Love all the Dodger haters. You get what you pay for. It’s true in most aspects of life. How bout a low end salary cap. Get all the cheap owners out. And the difference between the bottom and top of the caps should only be about 20 million. That would keep things competitive.
Players would NEVER agree to it, first off, and a salary cap in keeping things competitive doesn't do shit in other sports lmfao, have you seen the NFL lately?
You want traffic on the bases during playoff games? Risking hitting batters etc? Quickest way to lose a game & series lol, that can work if you have starters and relievers that can pitch inside
Ken Rosenthal now stands on two wrongs makes a right, what? Is Barry Bonds an asshole, no doubt. Ken is supposed to be a professional, this is why the greatest hitter in baseball isn't in the hall of fame but David Ortiz is.
Dude was on Roids along Clemens, Rodriguez ect...that's why he's not in. Does he deserve to be in? Yes. He was a HOF just from his time in Pittsburgh. Does him being an asshole to writers and reporters also have something to do with him not being in? Mike Schmidt and Eddie Murray treated writers and reporters like crap and they were first ballot HOFamer's. It's the Roids!
Their biggest liability is they no longer develop their farm players. They now trade prospects for younger prospects and buy players for the big club, which is making the roster on the older side. It may not affect them next season but it will soon. It also will lead to injuries more often.
I’ve noticed the same thing. Freeman 35, Betts 32, Muncy 34, Teo 32, Ohtani 30, Rojas 36, W. Smith 30, Edman 30, Snell 32, Glasnow 31, Kershaw 36. Some declines are inevitable. I won’t be banking on it bc I’m sure they have replacements, or will just buy some. They also get to pick any superstar they want out of Japan like it’s an extension of their farm system. The only way this team can be beat is by Father Time.
@Dan-tt8snthis team as it's currently constructed will win for another 4 years, if I ways other teams I would be planning my window for contention to win in 5 years.
All I can say is max muncy at 3rd base is a hit or miss that's the only defense liability I can think of everything else is solid.... which is why everyone thought the dodgers were going to get arrenado and have him at 3rd even tho he doesn't want to play that
If they were injured and unavailable for all of postseason, yeah, that’s a problem. As it was, Betts was out 6 weeks with fractured hand, Freeman out with son’s illness and sprained ankle total about 3 weeks, plus playing hurt during NLDS and NLCS, Ohtani hurt game 3-5 World Series. And still win it all.
Bonds, ARod, Clemens should be in the HOF. No brainer. It might be nice if the Phillies, Yankees, and, especially, the Cubs were willing to spend money. No need to criticize the Dodgers and Mets for spending. And, despite Ken’s BS answer, the press has crapped all over Bonds for years.

Lux was a strong defender at 2nd
I agree he wasnt that good...only play 2nd base and not much range avg at best arm
Look at stats they make them for defense. He was above average. The worst defender by a lot was teo.
Lux was above average defensively at 2b. His main liability for the Dodgers is that he lacks positional optionality. He can really only play 2b and can't hit against lefties.

Yep. Few of the Dodgers position players were Gold Gloves, but they still won it all.
They now have a Korean spidermonkey that has gold gloves at both short and second.
If Dodgers Defense is weak then the Yankees Defense is horrible bad😂
They got better by subtraction since Torres isn’t there.
They both sucked defensively but when you slug at a ridiculous rate, It doesn't matter. Hence why they both made the WS despite blaring weaknesses.
The Yankees defense is horrible, let's be honest 😂

I don't know why the Dodgers felt a need, at all, to move Mookie to the infield.
Because betts wants it
He wanted too move into the infield the dodgers didn’t ask him too
Mookie has a superstar ego mate. He “wants a challenge”. Idc about the regular season but hope they lock him in during oct
Mookie needed himself of playing infield for his potential injury worries. However, the reason why he wants SS instead of 2B is to challenge himself.
What happens to men who play shortstop who have egos, another player will take a shot at him at a second base play?
grasping at straws with their defense lol
