    I've starting asking myself the basic three W's questions - WHY keep this? WHAT will I use it for? and WHEN will I use it? 'Just because...' or 'someday' aren't acceptable answers.

    Another brilliant podcast. I keep you guys on a loop:) I’m not saying it’s not an addiction but my nooks and crannies are no longer cluttered! I can’t believe how many things you two say that strike a chord(and make me laugh)and keep me decluttering! Plus, I’ve got a few friends on the journey as well. Thank you, Ed and Gayle. I've been off the wagon for about 6 months... But I'm gonna try to get back on.
    First step: get me some Gayle motivation while I start with the easy stuff.
    My goal for today is to go through my winter clothes and get rid of everything I didn't wear this past winter. Then I'll make sure all my winter clothes are washed and put and away.

    When working with keep/toss on paper, I do pull out a couple things from the keep pile to put on an urgent/critical pile. I don't want my current bills or my birth certificate ending up in a pile with stuff that's less urgent, like an old legal document or tax returns from 2 years ago. Some paper keep things are important to keep but aren't going to blow up your life if they are misplaced. Other papers are mission critical. Those are few and far between, but separating them from the pile as I find them reduces my anxiety.

    The paper pile is one of my issues. I found that I hate looking through it twice, so I have a file sorter that is just for sorting as I go thru the pile. I know I am going to have a bill file, a paid file, a medical file, etc., These are just refile categories. That way I don't get bogged down having to read anything but I can get to it later if in a hurry and I am not finished sorting yet. I buy cases of dog food cans, so I repurpose the cardboard tray/boxes for sorting. They make tidy piles that are easily manageable for small stuff even and movable if you don't finish. I can't stand creating a big box of unsorted mail. I have done it too many times. Love your channel! Thank you!

    Just a hint about digital clutter. You can view files by Details view, and if the file/s haven't been modified for years, (or you choose time limit) I just delete without opening the files/s.

      I know just what you mean. I had the same issue, so now I fill boxes with stuff and make a free stuff sign and put it on the curb. I avoid trash days and carry leftovers back to garage at night. It's very hard for me to throw good items out so this works for me. I have made loads of strangers happy. Good luck with the hard work!

    We had a really old piano that we just could never figure out how to get rid of...I know all of the answers people will recommend for something like that, but nothing was working for us though. My husband finally started taking it apart piece by piece and then called someone who would take the metal pieces of it and we ended up getting rid of it that way. I'd rather have kept it whole, but we had to do what we had to do.

Didn't have anybody to help me with getting it out of there so took it apart with a knife and a hammer to get it into my car. Boy you don't realize how well furniture is made until you try this. We had a huge Victorian piano in the basement of our parents’ home. We considered we’d have to do that but finally found a charity that would take it if we paid them to. (Wrap your mind around that 😟) And my parents were sure it would be worth something some day .... I try to keep that in mind when of the mind to keep something I perceive to be valuable.

      I did short time spans. That made me feel better about keeping it going. It's a joy when you found some success. If you can find an accountability person that's great. I grew up in a huge house my mother kept everything and I followed in her footsteps. So it took me 9 years some of it was due to illness. 25 helpers at different times an ages. 6 dumpsters because my dad stuff was there that he didn't want when he left. I am the kind of person that wants to go through everything bit by bit. I live in a small apartment now and very happy. Kept down to what I really needed. I thank God for that.

Even when you are done in another 6 months go back and look for more things to get rid off. Be careful of what you bring in after you're done. Congratulations!

    About decor clutter. We should evolve into our own taste in decor, instead of buying a lot of junky stuff from Michaels etc. What we thought looked great at 20, will probably look immature later on. We should change our decor as we age. Just as we mature into our own clothing style. Nate Berkus, the decorator, did a tv show on this topic; he said something like "If you are 40, you should not decorate like you are 14. You would not wear the clothes of a 14 year old, so stop decorating like a 14 year old. "

    • @TheClutterFairy
      @TheClutterFairy  3 года назад +2

      Try an independent jewelry store, or a pawn shop. They will give you a wholesale price for it, since they'll resell it, but you can pass it on that way. Or you can ask friends if they'd like to buy it from you. Someone else won't see your old boyfriend when they wear it, so they'll be happy to have it. You can also sell it on consignment at a resale store. This is likely to get you the best price, as they want the pieces to sell as high as possible so their cut is large as possible. Lots of jewelry gets sold via resale shops.
