    "If you don't build your dream, someone will hire you to help build theirs..."-Tony Gaskins
    Definition of The American'T Dream
    * The American't Dream is a satire on the "rags to riches" notion of the American Dream.
    * It represents the ideal that people strive for success by working an unsatisfactory job, rather than a fulfilling career that feeds their own success and passion. So rather than chasing the "American Dream" they are chasing the "American't Dream" by allowing their own dreams to be stifled by another person's dream.
    Everybody claims they want SUCCESS, but very few truly pursue it. Following on from the success (2 Million RUclips views) of "Why I Hate School But Love Education". The American't Dream addresses the distinctions between the principles of a job you make yourself do day in day out, and a career you love and are really passionate about.
    As time goes by, we become more preoccupied with surviving as opposed to living. Many people are content with having a stable routine job (which doesn't pose any risks to their way of living), rather than pursing their own creative ambitions. They frequently complain about detesting their job, but continuously put themselves in this unsatisfactory position, accepting this is all they're worth.
    Why do we spend our time struggling to work for other people, rather than build and achieve our own dreams?
    What's stopping us from finding out what our dreams are and chasing them?
    In a society where the 9--5 job routine has now become the epitome of success for the average person. Is the possibility of a promotion or generic work achievements really what spurs them on in life?
    Is it the fear of failure or the loss of stability, which leaves us trapped chasing this American't Dream?

    First time I ever listened to this I was 20, waitressing, not quiet sure of my life. At 22 I started college, at 23 I got into the nursing program. I listened to this every other week. Espeically when I felt overwhelmed. At 24, almost 25 I graduated and passed my NCLEX. 2 years later and I STILL listen to this when things are extremely hard. 7 years this video has had an impact on me and continues to motivate me.

    I am not surprised but energized by this fellow poet who is speaking to his generation. As a poet and Spoken Word artist, I walk in the minefields of the revolutionary. SuliBreaks is a voice for his generation and as an older statesman I am in awe of this young, gifted and black man. I am proud of my race and ethnicity and I make a point of mentioning it every chance I get. We have come a long way and to know better is to be awake. We are one. WE ARE STILL HERE.

    I'm 18, a recent high school graduate and don't want that 9-5 life. Everyone around me is going to college but I don't like the way the educational system is structured and don't want to be in debt forever. To me success is loving what you do so I'm looking for what I love. I can't look to my family for guidance, we're immigrants and all my mom knows is farm work and a 12 hour shift. I hate that, I don't want that life. If you're like me confused and looking for a better life, just know you're not alone. I've known since I was 15 years that old college wasn't for me. I thank you Suli, you open my mind to strive for something better than survival. I'll be back in a few years to show you just how far I've come. I'm not looking for a 9-5 I'm looking for a 24/7, that way I'll never see it as work. I'll see it as life

    • @evanmastermind

      +Kevin Lopez I'm 15 now and in high school. I already dislike the way the are preparing me for the "real world". Before I entered high school I knew I wanted to do something different. I respect you for being confident in your decision to avoid college. Right now I am conflicted whether or not I should do the same. Everyone in my life is telling me what I should do in order to have a safe future. I just don't know if I want a safe future. I love what you said about not wanting a 9-5 but rather a 24/7. I believe that work should be something that you do until you die. You shouldn't have to work for retirement so you can start your life at 65. You should be living the whole time. I remember once watching a video with Bill Gates explaining his early days as a software engineer. Him and his friends would literally live their projects, often going for days without sleeping or even eating enough. He said that they would go to a restaurant starving, but ask for the bill before they had eaten because they had been talking about their project the whole time and wanted to get back to it. That is the life that I think people should live. That is how great things come to be and how humanity progresses.

      +Kevin Lopez ur 15, I would advise u to first.GO TO COLLEGE. ..u just might find the career u love by being exposed to different career paths...suli isn't against education, he is against working a job for the rest of your life as opposed to a career..if u don't have rich parents u SHOULD go to college becuz u just might HAVE to work a job temporarily n order to get TO that career u love....in this world u havwe to use every opportunity u have and college is an opportunity.....and u don't have to go in debt ...start at a local community college and apply for financial aid...the people who come out of school with 80,000 ofdebt are those kids u want to showoff where they went to school by going to this big named college just to tell their employer or friends "oh I went to so and so"..............

      +Percy Sherrod what if we don't care what college he/she went to. You can't base how well educated you are on what college you went to. As long as you are determined and set for what you want to do, you don't need to waste money on education you don't need

      nicole :I I wasn't saying the big named college is the best choice...what I was saying was don't count out college completely..........college isn't a dirty word and u CAN come out of college without loads of debt.............I respect your opinion but don't count out college completely.......if ur not born in wealth u need to at least give it a try....or just take one class here and there..u just may find something u love........and THEN if ur still not interested in college ..AT ALL.then make your choice but know whatever choice u make.............u have to LIVE with it......for better.or for.worse

      I'm 15 years old. I agree. People look at me like I'm a future McDonalds worker, simply because I don't want to go to college. I've been told that I'm stupid, arrogant, disappointing, all because I don't want to go to college - because that's not the way for me. The debt, the 9-5, the constant hating my job. That's. Not. For. Me.

    I watched this video a year ago for the first time and it changed my perspective of my own life. I am attending a University and I'm working in a full-time retail position. My grades were slipping because my main priority was to go to work and pay the bills. I was constantly depressed because I thought that was how it was always going to be. No life, just work. Once I saw this, everything changed. It occurred to me that going to school and working was merely just a small chapter in my life- I have a choice on my priorities. In order to get out of simply surviving, I started focusing on school rather than my sales at work and bonuses. I'm now a few weeks away from graduating college and heading towards my passion and career. In other words, I'm about to start living my life how I desire. Thanks for your influential videos!

    Don't even take the time to be bitter at the world b/c that will destroy you. Bitterness and resentment are insidious cancers that kill their host. Keep loving and focusing on your brothers; it will NEVER be too late to follow your dreams. I feel that one day, no matter how tired you are now, you'll be fulfilled and glad you sacrificed for them. You are an inspiration to more people than you might expect. Remember, when the load gets heavy God wants to carry them. I wish you the best.

    I hate my university, I hate exams, I hate the grading system and I hate my whole life inside this campus. I am not without skills or dreams or goals in this life, I'm a passionate man who yearns to succeed. And yet I'm still pursuing studies in this university where the value of my whole person is determined by my GPA, a number. How could any person in this world be restricted and labeled according to a number? My heart squeezes whenever I think of all the places in this world still left to be seen and here I am, stuck with a Java homework and a digital design quiz. As if death will be waiting for us all to graduate. As if death sees me and thinks "He's enduring so much of this meaningless hard work, let him live until he collects the fruits of such hard work". Then I ask myself, if I am aware of all this, why am I still torturing myself inside this hell of university? Why, what would I achieve and where would I go and what goals will I attain without the one thing this whole world revolves around; money. I have no love for money and nourish no desire towards making it, still a bit of it is essential if I were to live my life to the fullest. So here I am again stuck in this university, bearing the daily torture of my professors and their assignments and praying death will think twice before coming to take me away of my current misery.

    Exactly so. We often hear people saying, do what you like to do but forget it's true meaning and why it is important. Do what you want, not what someone else wants, not what the society wants, not what the paycheck is but do, what you want.
    One characteristic to success is to like what you do and be proud about it. That will show in your career of choice in a positive way and if you don't find happiness in your current job. Re-think your goals.
    Even if it was a plan you had from a child, it might not be what you want now. Even with a degree from it. I was sure I would become an architect but after I went into high school, I changed my goals and I am now becoming a psychologist.
    And the more I progress, the more happy I am with the decision and the more I want to know and succeed. Because that is the key to success.
    A stand up comedian Demetri Martin also shared a common goal and I think he is still searching for his passion, or maybe it is the stand up he is doing but still.

    I feel like the only way to change the system is to win playing the system's game. Once you win (i.e. study a career that society demands, work many countless hours at your job, become wealthier than most) then you are respected and influential. Only then will you have the power and the funds to change society. The people at the bottom cannot change a thing; and even if they could, they are too busy trying to survive. Only the ones at the top can change the rules. But then again, why would they change it? They're at the top, living comfortably and relaxed. They've already made it. And changing the rules may affect their status quo. Even if they are decent people, they will look out for themselves over struggling strangers. And like that, the system persists.

      Most of them at the bottom do not even know they are trying to survive that is now ignorant some of them are.
      In my class from school I was the only person who went to university and in my school students who tried to study were bullied. I and my brothers were keen boxers as kids so I rarely had any issues but on a few occasions I had to threaten other students in the class because they kept interrupting the class.
      Some of these kids in question had no clue as to the bubble they were living in. Education to them was jail in that they were forced to attend.
      The welfare state in the UK has destroyed those at the bottom of the socioeconomic order. You have to understand there is no real system. Governments are just as likely to be subject to the markets as anybody else.
      Corporations have collapsed because they did not understand the market. There is not a true system.

    I'd still love it. The most important result of one's work is the growth. I'm still growing and if it means I don't see materialistic or influential results now, then so be it. People confuse living their dreams with the results that come after living them. It's like the famous saying about people wanting to live in the mountain not realizing happiness is as they climb it.

So long as we continue to merely pass time and ignore reality, no one is a success, no one is a hero, no one is a good person. This video is inspiring and all but it simply is not true, though chasing their dreams has allowed a VERY small amount of people to end up as rich and famous... it only works for 1%, I am certain if I were to just quit my minimum wage job today I would just end up dead in the streets somewhere by next month (though this may end up being the case regardless for other reasons). I no longer have dreams and ambitions because once I hit the age of reason I realized it is unrealistic to assume just because SOME people achieve their dreams through hard work that everyone and anyone can... keep living life like that and you will be 80, still a nobody (like I have come to grips will be me) on your death bed looking back thinking "Why did I drop everything in my life to chase my dreams... when I accomplished nothing." Call me a pessimist but that does not make me wrong, facts are facts.

    • @PeteS_1994
      @PeteS_1994 9 лет назад +2

      Kishin Lucy He never said you should quit your minimum wage job, he said you should strive for your ambitions rather than just survive doing work you don't like. Just like you can go college and work, I guess in some situations you can work in a job you don't particularly find ideal but also try to strive for what you are passionate about.

    • @FargothM13
      @FargothM13 9 лет назад +2

      ***** Remove the whole bit about quitting and my point still holds strong: almost no one (when you contrast from the entire population) that has "chased their dreams" has made it anywhere. I suppose it is fine to tell children this, and let them decide if it is probable later in life (like I have done), but overall it really isn't an ideal thing to do in life.

    • @PeteS_1994
      @PeteS_1994 9 лет назад

      Kishin Lucy Yeah, I guess realistically not everyone can achieve their dreams, especially since society isn't only ran on "ideal" jobs, but I also feel why not try and aim for something you are passionate about if you believe in it and have the opportunity. The path to success isn't a straight path, it involves lots of twists and turns.

    • @FargothM13
      @FargothM13 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Well don't get me wrong, if you are optimistic enough to hold onto "dreams", and an opportunity to fulfill said dreams comes to fruition, certainly take advantage of it. But of course such opportunities are... few and far apart to say the least.

    I get it, I do. But I firmly believe that everyone has a role to play. We need people who have less ambition, who will do the s*** work that a society demands. I'm not one of them. I'm not a millionaire, but I definitely have a "career". But without everyone else providing the services everyone needs, everything collapses. Your message is in a sense inspirational. But horribly unrealistic.

      +Gavin MacBride What if you just watched this talented young man's gift in this very video. Closed minded I would have to say you are, cause it seems you missed the most valuable piece of work one could take away from this great poetry...this is beautiful, and it's not about money, that is just Suli's words telling all who see this that you, me, and all of God's children have special talents, gifts, and to find them you must know yourself...choose your passion or go for the money...passion wins.

    • @enlightenedment
      @enlightenedment 8 лет назад +3

      You're right, everyone has a role to play, but that doesn't mean that they deserve less pay. If you were in their shoes, what would you do? You would change your life by educating yourself, or learning a trade. Some people can't see better for themselves, but that doesn't mean that they should be used and abuse by the system. And that's why it takes people with ideas like Suli to show them. The poor man's capital is 2 strong legs and 2 strong arms, and yet he dies poor, not because he didn't use them; But all his life, he played his role - He was a fool. The meaning behind the proverb: "the wise live and die just like the fool".... The country is as weak as it's slowest vessel. - E. Nightingale. Educate your fellow man and your country will sail.
