Since the beginning of time parents have heard the phrase "You don't understand me?" come out of their children's mouth. If not, have at least seen the thought process flash through their child's mind, exemplified by a "sigh" or a slamming of a door after an argument. Is this merely a part of growth, a rebellious phrase every child must go through to achieve maturity or is there an aspect that is overlooked?
Taken from the ITunes versions of his EP "The Dormroom" Suli Breaks addresses the issue of the misunderstanding that exists between Parents and their children. In "Parents are the hardest people to please", he touches on his experiences as a young adult attempting to purse his success, and the negativity that he and so many other experience from their parents as a result of this. He comments on the borderline hypocritical attitude that it's sometimes adopted that does not allow a child to flourish outside of the constraints of the society which their parents have subjected them to. He states that
"I don't believe that one party is always wrong and the other always right. I believe it's alternates, hence the need for there to be an understanding between parents and their children and acknowledge that they both want the best for each other"
Much like crowd favorite on the downloadable version of the EP on his website "The Fountain Of Youth" Suli Breaks is calling for all parents to acknowledge that they can learn just as much from their children as their children can learn from them, and visa versa. Will be releasing these more consistently on either a Thursday or Sunday every week as part of my "LECTURES" series, while I'm attempting to finish my latest album. Enjoy!

amen. Suli's approach is twofold: peel back the different layers of societal facets aka oppression, and then diatribe against them in the vogue of youngsters (those sick rhymes have a purpose, guys). I have tears streaming down my face as I write this, because it seems like only Sulo and you guys really get what it's "all about"

He can't be wrong. Everything he says is pretty much subjective, can be interpreted from multiple viewpoints. What he says isn't concrete, like 1 + 1 = 2.

***** im sorry but from what I've listened to ( not exactly sure what you listened to) most of he says in his poems are true and is subjective, if you cant understand the deep and thoughtful meaning behind his words then that's you choosing to be ignorant to the world outside of your safe and special bubble. but if one day you become aware of the world besides your own; you will see the chaos of today's modern times and for your sake i hope that day comes soon.

The backup plan 100% reminds me of my sister. Her passion is and has always been photography, and she's amazing- She won first prize in her very first photography competition against hundreds of adults when she was 15, and had her first wedding photography gig later that year. She started her own photography business at 16, and was very successful at first, until our parents pushed and pushed at her to put it on hold until she finished high school. Once high school was over they pushed at her to go to university, When she quit 6 months in to pursue photography full time, they practically disowned her, saying she would never be successful and should give up. She moved all the way to the UK from Australia just to get away from them, and now my parents constantly fight and talk about divorce, blaming my sister because she was the glue that held our family together.

Yup, we all have the family expectations horror stories... mine is basically a "my brother was the "perfect" child & I live in his shadow in the eyes of my mom, despite how much she tries to deny it" kinda thing. I have always danced to the beat of my own drum & my bother was always perfect at fitting in the mold. I argue that I'm more successful as a High School Junior than he is as a College Junior, I'm the one who solves family disputes, I'm the one who talks about philosophy & of business models & transactions, historical discussion & such as a fun time task; but only my dad who I rarely see & my uncle who I'm lucky to see once a year realize that I deserve at least equal respect to my brother. I've thought about running away for a while but realize the house would go to shit without me & I view it as a future investment when I some day inherit it, so gotta take care of it while I can.

My heart beat out of my chest showing my strict immagrant father this video. As he reluctantly watched, repeatedly looking up to listen to Wolf Blitzer on CNN and turning up the volume of the TV, his finger stroked his thigh which was a sign of annoyance I know well from childhood before a whipping. I was scared of showing him what I didn't have the guts to say myself. After the video, I broke the silence by explaining how being mad that I couldn't remember Franklin's birthday doesn't help me pursue a career as a surgeon. I was handed his dinner plate, and was told to warm it in the microwave. Some parents will always hide behind ignorance no matter what.

My parents couldn't care less about my goals and aspirations in life or any of my achievements unless the house is sparkling clean. I understand that cleanliness is important and something you need when you're older, but after 8 hours of school and another 5-6 hours of homework, would anyone feel like scrubbing the kitchen floor? I have the rest of my life to fold clothes and wash dishes, but only 4 years to show that I'm "good enough" for colleges. A shirt on the floor or an empty water bottle on my desk won't matter when I'm laying in my grave. On my death bed I'm not going to be thinking about how proud I am for having a squeaky clean home, I'm going to be thinking about how proud I am for working hard and achieving my goals. I wish my parents could just understand for once...

This video chokes me up everytime I watch it. I am 16 and love words, I write storys, poems, raps, and emersive myself in it. And instead of my mom getting behind me and helping me, she just says 'yeah right, youll be screwed in real life'. I really wish I had a parent to at least understand me, or at least be interested in what Im working towards. Instead, she smokes, and plays candy crush on her phone all day, the second one more of an addiction then her first. It disgusts me, my dad was abusive, and my mom just neglects me. Who am I supposed to turn to? My mom has a mental condition, and never gets out of the house, and because of that I feel like an introvert, and I remember when I was 7, everyday, I would ask if we were going somewhere, because I loved going places, but now, I just feel like a product from a long line of shit. I dont know anymore really, I feel like the whole world is against me, what can i do without family. I guess Ill continue to carry on by myself, and spend more and more hours in my room alone working on lines, and ideas, and versus. And I love when I do that. But i still feel an emptyness. Fuck.

I'm about to fail my math class, and when I confronted my parents asking about a "Backup Plan", they ignored me and said that "You will pass the exam". Like they know that I won't fail. I play music and love to draw, sing, dance and speak. It's a shame that, just because of our society, they'll have to pay for something that I'm not meant for. Peace.

Here's the thing. My dad is always putting me down. He has supported me financially. I can't complain about that. I can't say he's been a bad father, because that's not true, either. I get that my dad wants what's best for me, so he doesn't let me dream. He doesn't believe in me. He says he does, but I know that's not true. He always compares me with other people, and all he cares about is how good I do in school, which I'm terrible at. I hate that he does that. I'm not like everyone else! I get that he's just wants what's best for me, but maybe he's wrong. Maybe he's right and I'm wrong. This time, though, I think I'm right.

Im homeschooled and i like it only because I have friends in a homeschooling group but if I don't do good in something i get yelled at and grounded but im tired of it. I considered suicide many times but im only kept alive by a crush (not telling) and a few friends. I want to show this to my mom but she would just yell at me for thinking less of her

Everyone here needs to use the Law of Attraction. It's shown in 'The Alchemist' the book Suli read. It's basically, if something is real then you can get it. If you want some kicks at the mall, it's not like they aren't real and they don't exist. It's not like your not able to get them. You can make anything you want reality. You don't have the shoes yet, but it doesn't mean they don't exist, they are at the mall, you just don't have em yet. But you gotta do everything you can to get them. Same thing with your dreams. Why not say you want to be the best in the world at what you do. Like I wanna be the Greatest film maker of ALL time. People are gonna laugh at your dreams, but your gonna be the one laughing when your at the top. Reach your dreams. The sky is not the limit, especially when there's footprints on the moon.

Lowkey ITS TRUE THO and I'm going to end up hating it for the rest of my life. I asked my parents what they wanted to be when they were little and they told me something completely DIFFERENT from what they are now and it BAFFLES ME because they're always teaching us to follow our hearts but at the end of the day they always want to make decisions for us that are not theirs to make. They act like their so interested in our lives BUT are always trying to change us they make their plans our plans and our plans a *BACK UP PLAN* THAT WE ALL KNOW FOR SURE WILL NEVER HAPPEN. I understand not all parents do this BUT IT GETS ANNOYING because my mom will ask me what I want to be now and I would simply DODGE the question because it brings A LOT OF ARGUMENTS!! & CONFRONTATION AND ARGUMENTS DON'T MIX *But thanks for the compliment :)*

naturalforme I understand where you're coming from. Now, I don't suffer from the same problem (parents deciding my major), however my parents aren't supportive when it comes to other random stuff. It pisses me off because they forget that they were once in our age and they don't keep up with society's updates (they still expect me to act like they did when they were my age). You're welcome :)

When i was younger i played with Photoshop, Indesign and, at the time Corel Draw. I was very good at it but was always encouraged by my parents to go out and "socialise" with kids my age. At the age of 17 I was lucky enough to be accepted for a Graphic Design apprenticeship with my local council. I am now 23 and am the head Graphic Designer for a large print company in Scotland and help train our junior Graphic Designers. Nothing is impossible.

Why do you need a backup plan? I think Bruce Lee said it best; "A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at." Just because you end up at plan b does not mean you have to give up on plan a. You can always work towards your dreams; however, they don't always happen in the time you expect. It would be smart to have something to fall back on.

I do really well in school (I know, poor me right?) but all I wanna do in life is dance. My mom's always like 'I support you, but you need to go to college and major in something else and maybe minor in dance. You need a backup plan and are too smart to ruin your life if dance doesn't work.' It gets to the point where I want to cry because she says she won't help pay for me to go to college if all I'm gonna do is major in dance. So really I'm just hoping that I'll be able to get a really good scholarship.

My parents only cared for the results and did not care what I wanted, they only cared what they wanted and they wanted that I can cope with the world and now I have moved and look what happened, I'm OK. Many parent's tend to see themselves in us and they tend to " teach us " that you need to study as your only thing in your life before you got to work. Studying is important of course but you can do just fine as long as you study enough and don't let anything interrupt the concept of enough-studying-for-you.
Now I will tell you a truth about this, I'm currently studying psychology in a university and the truth is that parents tend to try to fulfill their hopes and dreams they were never able to fulfill themselves but you have to make them realize that they need to respect you and your dreams instead of trying to make you their dream as that will never lead anyone to anything good. I hope strengths to you and hopefully one day your parents will also learn what they are trying to accomplish only hurts you.

So when I was sat at parents evening, and the teacher told my mum that "Im cheeky, talk alot and is hyperactive" I couldnt believe it. When I got home, my Mum didnt bother reading my grades, she just shouted at me for what seemed like an eternity... I told her that I didnt want to do anything with my life, and wanted to be an author. She told me that she expected more from me... Parents really are the hardest people to please.

***** Yea, I think quite a few parents need to talk to their kids about what they want to do with their lives (or at the very least become active in what they want to learn), including mine. I don't know what I want to be but all I know is that I want a career and not a J.O.B. It boggled my mind when I once heard my mother say that she'd rather have more money than to be happy because i'd rather go for the happiness than the money, I don't want a lot but just enough to get by in life.
Then I hear my family rags on my brother about all the decisions he's made on his own about education (he went to become a dentist then quit and started worked towards a criminal justice degree and is now working security) only for them to realize that they never had to make those decisions when they were young. Then they look at me because out of the 3 sons they had, i'm the "educated" one. I'm the one that got the best scores (to which they never even once glanced at), knew the most historical facts (most of which are lost on them), and always got my work done on time. What they fail to realize is that I only did my work because I wanted to play my video games longer or that I wanted to watch a movie when I got home. They think that i'm going to be the one to make the most money when in reality... I may want to become an author or maybe a pianist, or perhaps something with coding or sewing. I don't know... it's hard to understand what I want to do and even worse to think what my parents will say.
That's the kicker isn't it, "What will my parents will say?" the fact that most kids become afraid to speak their mind around their parents because it will most likely turn into the same thing: "Don't be ridiculous, aim for something realistic." yet they tell us to follow our dreams, heh... parents are sometimes hard to please. I don't know what my parents will say but all I know is that i'll continue on to find that one thing I love and continue working towards it. Whether my parents yell, disown, or become disappointed in me; i'll keep working towards my dream once I find it because at this point it's the one thing I want to find the most.

I am 25 and I pretty much gave up looking for my immediate family trying to support me because quite frankly none of them even care. My mother and her hubby gloat about my sisters being something within the educational and pet industry respectively meanwhile I been trying since I was 18 to get into wrestling. Since I told my mother of my dreams of getting into wrestling because I love the interaction the wrestler give their fans, the way the wrestlers control their own lives, and how they can either sign with one company or be freelance.
My family don't even attempt to learn about how people can make money then the standard way because they always come back with "how do you know if you would make it" and "that's them, not you" yet when I turn around and asked them "how do you know how much heart I have" with no reply because while they are catering to themselves, not one of them even take my interest, my hobby, my life into the family life yet they grow around family like it's love.
Yes I am 25 years living with my family because the location I live doesn't have the best prices for rental home/apartments and I never took time from work to go do this and that because I like to receive a bonus in my check that goes to buying my bills.
    I await the insults.

I am only 15, and I suffer from panic attacks because I believe I have no life ahead of me. I get bad grades, I get yelled at. I get good grades, I get told to improve. Nothing is ever good enough and nothing will ever be enough until I'm the best. But I can't be the best. It is true that our parents are hypocrites, they have gone out with people they shouldn't, gotten drunk and dropped out of high school. But I ever consider doing the same or I start to loose hope in an impossible goal that keeps running away from me, I am the one to blame. Not the people, the schools and the parents that set impossible standards for me. I can be better, but I could be worse. I try my hardest and have my own hobbies. I want to do what I want to do with my life, how do you know that I won't be successful at it? Even though I don't have my whole life sorted out right now, doesn't mean you should lose all hope in me.

You do have a life ahead of you! Don't let your parents or anyone discourage you from achieving your goals and being all that you can be. I understand how you feel about your parents being hard on you about your grades...maybe you can try to sit them down and express your feelings to them or you can go to an adult that you trust and see if they can talk to your parents for you. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE! Don't EVER think that for a second! You can be successful in your life...you keep putting in the hard work and be confident. For your panic attacks, I suggest that you pray to God and ask Him to help you to relieve these feelings so you can accomplish the tasks in your life and ask Him to touch your parents hearts. I always find it helpful to talk to God and I know you'll find this helpful as well! It's a shame that some parents are just too hard on their children...but don't let them take away your joy Jasmine! I believe you can overcome your panic attacks and be all that you can be! I am keeping you in my prayers ok? :) If you need some advice or just someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to leave a comment under the "Discussions" tab on my page. I *don't do* the personal message thing on here, but if you leave a comment, I will get back with you as soon as possible! God bless you and stay strong girl! You can do it, I know you can! My parents are always telling me, "don't go to a music school, what are you going to do with a degree like that? go in to the medical field instead, become a lawyer, become this and that." yeah, the music industry is a hard place to be but I would rather struggle to get where I want to be than working in an office, or taking a college course I have no interest in. and still my parents say, "get a job that you love" how can I get a job that I love when you say that I shouldn't enter that field/industry? parents say things that seem to not make sense in my eyes. if only they could sit down at the table with me and have a talk on how we can get me to where I want to be.

This just shows that parents have something to learn from kids. No. Rather more so RELEARN. They need to relearn humility and respect. Parents are more than likely to tell you that because it's their house, it's the my way or the highway. But guess what. They're going to be disresprectful enough to walk into YOUR house when you get one and automatically think they are born with that right to claim it as theirs more so than yours.
Just like with you living in theirs, you are the one who GIVES them rights in your house. They don't magically walk in and have the right to put their feet on your footrests without your spoken or unspoken permission. It's your way or the highway when you get older. They lose that right when they lose you out of the house. And they need to learn that and respect that. Or you might have to lay some hands on some arrogant parents who think they have the right to lay their hands on you for telling them no they cannot put their feet on the footrest without a shower.
Re-Teaching them these basic yet absolutely neccessary things is how you honor your parents. Not by worshiping them and trying to pedestal them as the gods of your life. So what if your dad threaten to belt your bum ass when you were a kid? It wasn't because he was dada. It was because it was his house. He doesn't have the right to your worship. He has the right to a certain amount of respects until you move out. Then he loses all rights pertaining to you until you choose in your heart to give them back.
You want to honor them? Remember that they're your parents. But remember that they aren't perfect and CAN be disrespectful pricks.

I think the hardest thing to do is stepping back and remembering that your child is learning everyday and it's not about when I'm ready to give support, it's when they are ready to receive it that counts. Congratulations, you got through to at least one oldie.

They just want the best for you. Lots of video games is not good for you. Yes there are a handful of people on RUclips who get paid a lot of money. But they didn't try to do it as a career or get paid when they started. It was a hobby and it didn't consume there lifes. After 6-8 years they have 5+ million subcribers. You have to be realistic about it. But that doesn't mean you can't do your own thing. You can make your business, or go to a college specified for game devolpment. But gaming channels on RUclips take a whole lot more than $500 worth of tech and equipment and a $1500 gaming computer and some videos on a game that all the big you tubers already have 50 videos on.

Isac Castorena honestly, count all of the famous youtubers who made it with video games, compare that number to the amount of people in the world, that fact alone, is a highly improbable ratio, where as becoming a doctor is far more common, or being a lawyer, or even being employed in a fast food restaurant. all im trying to say, is if you can become successful in the first 3 months of gaming, then continue, if not. well.. give up. find a new hobby that you can be successful with, and make that your job.

I've been saying exactly these things to my mother, but she still doesn't understand me. She never forgot that one time I ditched school, while I know she used to do it all the time when she was my age. She never forgot the one time I got a B instead of an A. She never forgets anything. She's never once taken my dreams seriosuly, laughing off my dream to be an artist and telling me it's not a proper job. She doesn't know my interests, hobbies, nothing. And the only time she'll acknowledge my efforts to please her is if I bring back a report card with perfect marks. She doesn't know how long I spend studying and she doesn't know how much sleep I've lost while leaning over my pile of books, fitfully memorizing pages and pages of textbooks and notes while sobbing quietly and pinching myself to stay awake while my body was shutting down. And still, all she cares about is that stupid report card. Every time I get less than 90% on a test, I feel like a failure. Like I'm worthless. She pretends to be fine with the 88 or 79% I got when my head pounded so much that I couldn't even open my eyes anymore, but there as disappointment in her eyes every time. On parents' night, she'd be in and out of the rooms, beaming that the teachers praised me, but if any one of them had a single complaint, I could see it on her face. I'd hang my head in shame and let her shout at me when we'd get home. In the end, I'll never be good enough for my mother no matter what I do and how hard I try.

I Like Tae With Suga Kookies I know how you feel but I think it's time you shouted at your parents and force them to listen, I want to be an animator but my parents think it's a waste of time, I had to turn off the TV or steal my dad's laptop for them to finally understand that I don't need 100% on everything and that I can choose whatever I want, it'll take a while but you need to be assertive with them like I was, now they listen to me a bit more, granted my mom still thinks I'm dumb but my dad's a bit more supportive, just try to get their attention, I tried it and it worked(and I have Asian parents who are strict beyond anything! )

I know more about programs like photoshop, cinema4D , sony vegas and editing video, my way around the files on my computer, and loads more about those kind of programs and tech. Than my mom. She thinks that that stuff like doing video-games and doing RUclips will get me no where in life. I think the only reason she tells me this us because its not what she did, she says that if i want to get a good job i have to graduate and go to go to collage. The thing is, i have already been paid for my views on youtube. It was only a couple bucks but hey I'm a small youtube and I'm growing. She gets mad whenever my grades drop but I'm always on the computer. When ever i get on the computer i go on photoshop or maybe record a video and edit it. I have taught my self how to edit video, do really nice banners and images in photoshop. She still has trouble even getting the volume to work properly on the computer. I realize I'm ranting but oh well. It feels good to post this. Reply if your parents don't totally care for what you want to do with YOUR life.

But naturally they don't support me at all. "Have a backup plan." "Get rich first before you try to achieve your dream." "Don't be like us get lots of money so your not poor" I don't care. I don't want money I want my manga in a Japanese magazine. If there still around then... I hear the industry's not doing so good. I wonder if I show them this video they'll understand. But my dad's a gamer and I know exactly what he'll say when he hears Psss3... He won't take it seriously...

Most parents do not want what is best for you; but what is good for you. They want you to take the easy, safe route; one without risks (because this is most likely what they did). The simple fact of life is that you will not be fulfilled or achieve your dreams without risk. With risk and hard work comes reward.

I have a dream that I want so bad that I cry for. My parents are strict and "I want you to get all A* and want you to go to university" but what I want to do in life doesn't need university but it's not easy either. I haven't told them my dream because I know for a fact it will cause problems and they won't believe in me. They always tell me that I can be whatever I want to be in life but I started hearing about how apparently all parents say that but they don't mean it. As soon as you're like "alright, I want to be a _____" they'll be like "oh no you can't be that". I get it now. I'm preparing my self I've been preparing it since I was little how I will "come out" to my parents about how I'll live my life, what type of person I am what I believe in and I know it won't be easy because they are ignorant and break me down. I certain I won't get to where I need to be without tears.

All the popular gaming RUclipsrs have some things in common. They know how to talk to an audience. Practice speaking and increase your charisma. Then one day you may very well make it dude.
I'm 16 and just a few years ago I wanted to do the same thing, but I have changed and now I'm getting into software design. The reason I'm telling this to you is so you know that if one day your goal doesn't work out, maybe it can evolve into another interest.

    *On Children*
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth....

This punched me in the chest harder than anything I've seen on RUclips so far. I grew up military, so the holier than thou mentality were instilled in my parents. Nothing was ever good enough.
