You forgot the approx.100 German "Bodenplatte" planes that the Swiss shot down on the planes' way back from their targets, when they strayed into Swiss airspace. By that stage in the war a single experienced pilot led a swarm of 12-15 newbies, who could do little maneuvering and basically had to follow their leader within line-of-sight, like ducklings. When the leader was shot down, had mechanical trouble, or got lost himself, his charges were helpless. Whole groups crossed into Switzerland one after another and were eaten alive by the Swiss air defense guns.
EDIT: ignore this comment, reading comprehension failure. Weren't most allied planes, that strayed into Switzerland, simply ordered to land and the crews interned? I also find your claim that "only the leader would know how to navigate and maneuver, and none of the other pilots" to be highly questionable.
To retract my previous comment: Original comment said they were GERMAN planes, which makes perfect sense: Luftwaffe had basically spent all their experienced pilots AND "cannibalized" their instructors by pressing them into the front-line service as well. While Wikipedia doesn't mention Switzerland, operation targeted allied airbases in France which (depending where exactly in France) makes it more plausible that they would get lost in Switzerland, compared to aircraft operating in Low countries. It also mentioned that there was a friendly-fire incident where Germans shot down 16 of their own planes during the operation. AA gunners hadn't been informed and sudden swarm of planes was assumed to be hostile.
I remember reading a piece in a British newspaper long ago from a British Veteran soldier. Who said every time his unit encountered a Volksstrum unit it went the same way. They would fire a few shots to flush them out from cover. Take their weapons away. Run over the weapons with their vehicles. Then tell them to go home. And they always did.
That scene in Downfall where they show the last ditch units fighting in hell, totally unprepared and unable to withstand the assault while making catastrophic mistakes in the heat of combat
My grandfather was actually recruited right out of the classroom at the age of 16 as a "Flakhelfer" (someone manning anti aircraft guns). Then he was captured by the americans, who he said where always drunk and would routinely crash prisoner transports, with bodies flying like ragdolls from the vehicles. He always said that the americans where "the worst of all of them" and that they were just russians in nice coats. @@JB-kt9dx Your argument kind of fail when you realize that they can have just surrendered to the west. If it really was to protect themselves from the Russians, they might as well just surrender to the US and UK early on which prevents the Russian from actually reaching Germany. Because RUclips is only interested in making money, that’s why even if a large creator does something really horrible, the worst RUclips will do is give them a slap on the wrist. Meanwhile, if a smaller creator covers anything mildly controversial, RUclips fucks them over 37 different ways
Because this guy is talking BS. He also butches German words in a horrible way - we have Wiktionary, so everyone with at least average intelligence can learn the correct pronunciation if they can just be arsed - and what about that semi-AI thing he uses for depicting himself?
@ I will admit he doesn’t have the pronunciation right down right now, but the channel is probably more focused on animation and authenticity. Also, what do you mean by “this guy is talking BS”?
Dear Armrchair Historian Ur content is absolutely top notch. However I would like you to cover some more unknown historical topics. Ww1 and ww2 content has been abundantly cover up on ur channel. So maybe some other topics would be nice for change and diversity too.
You missed one of the most effective late war German units, that being the volksgrenadiers which were used extensively and were a great asset to deal with Germany's now higher amount of inexperienced soldiers
It’s fascinating and tragic to see how desperate the German military became in 1945, relying on improvised units and untrained soldiers. The sheer chaos of the late war period reflects the collapse of the Nazi regime.
Ramming as a matter of doctrine was nothing new. The Soviet Air Force did that from the start of Operation Barbarossa, as it greatly outnumbered the Luftwaffe in number of planes but was badly outclassed in both plane and pilot quality.
Can you do a video covering all the last-ditch defence forces of WW2? Like the volksstrum, Dalforce, Japan's armed civilian population, Soviet partisans/ unarmed conscripts... etc. I think it would be a very interesting point of perspective for a video and Happy new year!
Excellent video. Concerning the Volkssturm it should be noted, that they were not only the victims of the Nazi Regime, but also did sometimes participate in war crimes: especially the murder of KZ inmates, foreign civilian deportees and POW.
Это логично ведь среди них тоже были идеологически подготовленные люди, да и к бригаде руководителем ставили офицера, а это мог быть какой-то мясник, который уничтожал врагов рейха целыми селами где-то в Польше или СССР
Amazing editing and art style I love it could you maybe do a mini series on weapons used in certain wars or on certain weapons. Also an interesting video idea talking about vehicles during the interwar years of 1919-1939 as not to many videos talk about that.
They were planning to transfer troops from other branches like the Luftwaffe into the Heer, but Göring comes up with a counterproposal that's approved in '42. Creating separate Luftwaffe infantry divisions led by their own officers. Surviving units are later transfered to the heer, but there are units of essentially airmen and flight crews with very basic infantry training and kit for a few years, with a few paratrooper units. I don't know if sny such unit was still operational in Germany '45. Some were stationed as security troops in Norway and saw little combat.
I do not believe Walther Wenck gets as much recognition as he deserves. He was given the impossible task to save Berlin (Which ultimately fell to the Russian army), but refused the Fuhrer's orders in favor of doing what was right. He is still today the youngest German commander and he was able to let hundreds of thousands to cross the Elbe (Civilian and military) in order to surrender to the west. He was one of the last to cross the river himself. Truly-- what a man.
The werewolves were a problem in Denmark. In fact, the Danish government made a home made armored car, the V3, to fight the werewolves, causing many to surrender.
Well thanks, Armchair Historian. My Granduncle was in one of those last ditch units of Germany in 1945 (32. SS Grenadier Division "30.Januar"). He didn´t survive and was killed during the Battle of Halbe in May 1945. And before anyone condems him: he was forcefully drafted from the german Minority in Slovakia during that time!. It was a great crime by the regime back then to throw in the young, the old, the feeble and the unwilling to die for a lost cause!.
Before anyone condemms him? My brother in christ, if they made me choose between being hanged and called or get forcefully drafted into a badly trained last ditch militia I would pick the one that gives me the most chances of seeing my family again
@orlandodanielgonzalezalcar3360 my grandfather was almost drafted himself in 1945, but he managed to flee and go into hiding before that. My granduncle didn't have that kind of luck, as I said. But as I can remember of the stories my grandfather told when I was a cid, he was very guilt ridden and mourned for his elder brother quite a lot. Now they are reunited in heaven.
The creation of units like the Volkssturm was both a testament to the desperate state of Germany in 1945 and a tragic symbol of the human cost of total war. It’s chilling to think about how many civilians, including teenagers and the elderly, were thrown into battle with little training.

Don't worry, they simpy replaced the "stabbed in the back" myth w/ the "wermacht was clean of war crimes" BS.
The myth irritates me because both sides get it so wrong. To the point, I've had to make a small phrase: "Not all grey coats were[un seen], but every [un seen] wore grey or black"@farenellvideos
It was also to protect their families from the Russians dude u can't even imagine what those ppl went thru
@@JB-kt9dx Your argument kind of fail when you realize that they can have just surrendered to the west.
If it really was to protect themselves from the Russians, they might as well just surrender to the US and UK early on which prevents the Russian from actually reaching Germany. Which means that their families will actually be protected.
Instead they choose to fight until the bitter end to the point that the Russians and US/UK armies reached each other. Ensuring that as many families as possible had to endure the Russians.
Im glad you make a lot of videos on 1945 WW2 like everone focuses on the early aspect and mid war periods but so much happened in Europe that no one talks about
How can people like Mark Felton make ww2 content and not have the same censorship issues you have?
1:12 ngl this part looks like meme material
nice Easter egg with the 500 booster
Awesome video
Your work is exceptional. Happy New Years
Smoke sesh about to start and this man drops a video. PERFECT
didnt know that the germans also had kamikaze like attacks
I like the warthunder reference at 12:34
Dear Armrchair Historian
Ur content is absolutely top notch. However I would like you to cover some more unknown historical topics. Ww1 and ww2 content has been abundantly cover up on ur channel. So maybe some other topics would be nice for change and diversity too.
Despite the censoring from RUclips, this video is sensationally done. Best one yet
Thank you RUclips for trying so valiantly to keep us from learning history!
How do I use the free code ? I have no idea
12:34 nice war tunder refrence😂😂
12:30 Bro had a 500% booster
12:34 nice WarThunder-reference
You missed one of the most effective late war German units, that being the volksgrenadiers which were used extensively and were a great asset to deal with Germany's now higher amount of inexperienced soldiers
It’s fascinating and tragic to see how desperate the German military became in 1945, relying on improvised units and untrained soldiers. The sheer chaos of the late war period reflects the collapse of the Nazi regime.
9:00 Nintendo lawyers are on the way.
Ramming as a matter of doctrine was nothing new. The Soviet Air Force did that from the start of Operation Barbarossa, as it greatly outnumbered the Luftwaffe in number of planes but was badly outclassed in both plane and pilot quality.
Another great video!
Excellent content, as always.
Great episode of very much enjoyed it as always too but I think I enjoyed this one a little bit more. I learned things that I didn’t previously know.
Can you do a video covering all the last-ditch defence forces of WW2? Like the volksstrum, Dalforce, Japan's armed civilian population, Soviet partisans/ unarmed conscripts... etc. I think it would be a very interesting point of perspective for a video and Happy new year!
Bro at 12:40 mark he made a warthunder reference
i wonder how armchair know about war thunder💀💀💀💀💀💀
Yeah, so?
Death as light as a feather, the nation as heavy as a mountain
Great as always! I would apriciate if you do a video about Italian eastafrika from the Ethiopianwar to WW2
Why single out their war crimes when the Russians and Japanese were way worse
I should probably comment something to show that I’m here but idk what to say…
Frohes Neues Jahr I guess

*germany surrenders*
Meanwhile in the pacific:
LAST MAN STANDING
I do not believe Walther Wenck gets as much recognition as he deserves. He was given the impossible task to save Berlin (Which ultimately fell to the Russian army), but refused the Fuhrer's orders in favor of doing what was right. He is still today the youngest German commander and he was able to let hundreds of thousands to cross the Elbe (Civilian and military) in order to surrender to the west. He was one of the last to cross the river himself. Truly-- what a man.
I'm so happy I found this so quickly
Could've sworn I watched this before.
Fun fact: When the berlin was callapsing, the Kurland, islands in France, Brest, Silesia, and Norway were still defending.
The werewolves were a problem in Denmark. In fact, the Danish government made a home made armored car, the V3, to fight the werewolves, causing many to surrender.
unrelated but, armchair please say yes when i saw u talk about the bank stealing your legos (my braindead friend thinks im lying)
That Nazi Pokemon bit killed me.
There is a bunch of pure forced labour at work as well.

The Volkssturm was called "Germany's richest military unit"... gold in their teeth, silver in their hair and lead in their legs.
The creation of units like the Volkssturm was both a testament to the desperate state of Germany in 1945 and a tragic symbol of the human cost of total war. It’s chilling to think about how many civilians, including teenagers and the elderly, were thrown into battle with little training.
but you know that german trroops fought in norway till 1947 ?
Germany showed generally what total war looks like… we didn’t want to go through that a second time with Japan…
