[ARTICLE] The Problem with "Duel Worthy" Lightsabers
sabersourcing.com/2020/01/30/the-problem-with-duel-worthy-lightsabers
K
Well, it's a good thing I got a heavy blade from ultrasabers and let's just forget what the company says, as the customer, I believe my saber is duel worthy...my counter tops, bar stool legs and the corners of the walls would like to agree. I was literally trying to break my blade with blunt swings and did absolutely nothing to my blade.
"duel-worthy" to me: "I can hit this against a metal pipe at full force at least once without it breaking/bending"
The blade is made out of the same material as the lower reciever of a glock and the handle is the same aluminum that goes into aircraft's. Both are highly durable materials that can take a great amount of bearings. The only question is, how strong will the bond be between the handle and blade.
@AshTheFlash100 but they don't hurt like clubs.

@@somenbwithabadhistoryteach5872 debatable
@@GattToDaChoppa yeh. =(
There should be a grading system based on battles in the episodes. Like, "Episode IV" would be the lightest...then "Episode V" would be medium...then like "Episode III" would be the "I hate you and want to kill you" heavy use sabers grade.
R. Dean 😂😂 and episode one the “I don’t want to kill you straight away let’s have a choreographed fight first”
I disagree... because if someone wants, lets say, to buy a vader lightsaber from episofe 5 but with a higher grade, you wouldn't be able just because the vader blade was made only as a middle tear. You would then just cut your own wings by having a minimal offer of blades.
@@infoluminux i think he means that its just classifieds under that episode, you could have any lightsabers with any tier, it doesn't have to be from that movie
I'd need episode 3 grade lightsaber.
Episode IV: Made of glass.
Episode V: Works as long as you dont swing your hardest.
Episode III: You need to register it as a deadly weapon.
"is it duel-worthy" = "how hard and how often can I smack lightsabers/people/trees/anything/everything until this thing breaks?"

Cool idea
Nah friend, episode V would be the highest
I feel like the term "duel worthy" needs to be treated like an ESRB/PEGI self-regulation system, where each saber, hilt, blade, etc. has its own rating of something like
- L (light contact, like one handed light handed swings with other blades)
- M (medium contact, like two handed swings with other blades)
- H (heavy contact, like full on duels like your life depends on it)
- U (unreal contact, like swinging it at a tree or metal pipe without even a scratch)
and then a small list of things you can or cannot do with it to elaborate.
Duel worthy stuff depends on what kind of duels.
Like if it's just for fun, the Hasbro stuff is fine. But if it's a tournament, you don't want a telescoping blade.
By “hasbro stuff” do you mean black series? Because if you do....HELL NO I would never fight with black series!
@@starwarsageekstory1338 I mean like the telescoping blade/bladebuilder series, similar to the Disney create-a-saber that can give you a kylo ren blade
Oh ok
Are you a Star Wars fan
@@starwarsageekstory1338 I am. I'm just not fully aware of everything.
Everything breaks.
I got my stunt saber a little over twelve hours ago. For four hours straight, I was smacking it against hard surfaces around my house while the sabe was on, to not only test it but to hear how it sounds. With enough force to trigger a concussion, not even the counter tops had any damage on the blade, or the electronic equipment. This blade is made out of the same plastic that is on the lower reciever of glocks (also heard from a veteran that they use the same plastic to weave into kevlar) and the handle is made out of the same aluminum metal that they make aircrafts out of. My only fear was that the connection of the blade and the handle was not going to be a strong enough bond, but so far the blade has taken everything I have hit it against. I just need to try it against another saber, in which I'm getting my wife one in another two paychecks. If anyone else reads this really long message, I recommend these sabers if you are a starwars fan or if you just want to spar or duel. They are well worth the price.
@@rudolfogar1886 well said! The blades are tough. More likely to throw a tip or get a noticeable crease

@@HO-zy2bv at the time I purchased most of my master replicas and force fx, neo pixel wasn't even a thing.but ,, agreed !
One of the things I appreciate from Ultrasabers if the description of their mid-grade vs heavy grade blade. At first, I was veering towards heavy grade because I wanted to be able to duel with my cousin a little but then I read that heavy grade was for full contact and even for fighting with wooden sticks I realized I didn't need to add the extra weight or lose out on brightness. I propose two terms "duel worthy" and "battle worthy", duel worthy is if it can within the average person having a 5-minute spar with their buddy at a get-together (what the average person wants), while "battle worthy" is for the people who participate in tournaments or otherwise full contact duels.
That's exactly what I thought, until my mid grade blade broke just a few days ago. I'm hoping something was wrong with it.
Mid grade blades are for "light" dueling and heavy grade are for full contact. The brightness is the same unless you get the "ultra edge" series of blades which make a "fuller" blade (more solid looking") but they arent as bright
@@christianl1799 oof, that sucks. How did it go out?
I like the weight, I one hand my saber I'm more of a 7th form user. Nothing but accurate hard fast strikes. The heavy blade cut down to 33 helps me 1 hand drastically better than with the 36 I lose alot of manuervability. The weight Iis wonderful for the heavys

Darth Jar Jar The clumsy
God damn!
Do you know how durable the neopixel to baselit converter plugs are? Would the converters themselves be prone to breaking, or would the grip on the blade be less firm?
Do arm reveal
what
Seems like this should be a simple question. There could be levels. I would call them, decorative, light play, hard play, Sparring/Dueling. With the top level being only the most robust. Hard play would be adults swinging playfully, light play would be children playing, decorative being don't hit anything with it.
There actually are, mid grade blades are meant for light to medium dueling and heavy blades ( which can actually be used to duell against wooden bokken) are for heavy contact and speed dueling, you DO NOT want to duel with a heavy blade without protective equipment you will end up with bruises , black eyes, and possible throat injury.
@@SilasTheSilent I'm well aware of this actually. It's why I would suggest a range of 'duel ready' instead of getting stuck on this idea that it's either yes or no. Ex I'd call Force FX good for light play, something like the mid grade blades good for gard play. And only the premium blades from the likes of Saberforge UltraSabers etc to be the top of Duel worthy.
There are too many types and I’m so much confused. I hope someone can help me, I’d really like to find Luke’s green lightsaber that is worth for (I think) heavy dueling because I want to play with my friends, and at the same time is enough bright. I also don’t have much money but I don’t need something with thousands of functions, I’m only interested in a sword that makes enough light, is worth for what I think is heavy dueling and makes the normal lightsaber sound. I hope you can help me to find something that seems like my description, also sorry for my English it isn’t my first language
Also do you actually want to heavy duel with it? Like really. Think about it, full contact, with armor/padding. Or do you just want to hit with your friend wearing regular clothes?
knate44 nah it’s all or nothing we about to throw on that mando armor and go balls to the wall lol
My friend smacked me so hard with a lightsaber on the side of my forehead that I had a black eye and a noticable bump for a good while. I haven't been hit in a duel sincr

@@miningflame9847 And that's why many sport-style lightsaber tournaments want contestants wearing fencing / kendo helmets. That sounds like it really hurt.
I wanna do full contact but against people with regular clothes. Not even in a duel, just random people on the streets.
Should be a standardized term for duel worthy.
I remember reading a faqs page on a custom saber site (I don’t remember which one). One question was, are your blades duel worthy. The answer was yes they are but we don’t recommend it because your bones will break before the blades do.
Galaxy’s Edge lightsabers as in Savis Workshop and Legacy Lightsabers are kind of a middle ground between force fx and 3rd party. The blade wobbles some in order to prevent from force hitting the hilt. The only problem is the LEDs in the blades. But the blades are replaceable so they are “dual worthy” just not indestructible

Fighting is cool, fighting like I was a jedi is so much cooler
Duel worthy = sword
Combat ready = can hit sabers and people with a full swing without breaking
Light combat = full speed swing, minimal force applied
Light use = force FX
Swing-able = don't hit anything but can be swung around a little
Display = shelf unit
I would just use my Disney Parks Exclusive Rey Lightsaber for closeup shots ONLY when being pinned by the other plasma blade.
For hardcore impacts, possibly go to SaberForge.
What’s the one on the far right 😍
Me and my friends built our own lightsabers. We used 1 inch diameter PVC pipe for the blade and we all built our own hilts out of various things. Those lightsabers are duel-worthy. No fancy lights though
Good thing I got a heavy grade blade :]
I’d just practice my moves, it’s not worth breaking it but it would be cool if you can duel with a lightsaber that is made for dueling.
If the community is going to take itself seriously enough to organize competitions, then it has to expect these sort of growing pains and the discussions necessary to to come to an agreement on terms. And manufacturers need to recognize and agree to abide by those standards.
It took HEMA a couple decades to get to the point where (most) everyone knows the difference between theatrical, practice, and rebated blades, and why you use them in the correct venues.
The galaxies edge lightsabers are duel worthy but you can't really hit as hard as possible

Question: Are SaberForge Apprentice blades up to par?
In terms of competetive tsl lightsaber dueling/fencing, i consider any hilt that is relatively smooth (no crazy protrusions, good grip) and can take heavygrade blades as "duel worthy" (coming from a consumer whos done a lot of homework but not a seasoned vet)
This helps me knowing what type of saber I want
Please do a review on what string blades are

Im waiting on my grab bag from ultrasabers and got it with heavy grade blades so im getting ready for some full contact.
Dont forget your armor if your dueling with heavy grade blades because they are strong enough to duel with wooden bokken. Fencing masks rated at 350 nw , a gorget, athletic cup and hand arm protection. May want those knee and shins protected as well, for tournaments it's a must.
@@SilasTheSilent Ahh didnt realise they were that strong but im not a real duelist im just getting it so when i duel with a friend it wont snap but thanks for the info though
Personally, I would not duel with my Savi’s light saber until there is a something like a metal core and the electronics are strengthened. Such as neo, pixel, or some other kind of full retrofit of the electronics and blade itself. Just for me, it comes down to if I am dueling I don’t want to be worried about my light saber twisting as I’m swinging it.
For me, a duel worthy lightsaber is any metal (or composite) hilt with a REMOVABLE blade. After that, it depends on your budget. I think sabers with an in-hilt LED that glows through an empty blade is the best because the blades are fairly cheap, but a savi's or legacy saber could be used to if you're ready to buy more blades to change it when a dead spot appears or when it just dies.
In the end, as long as the blade is meant to be changed easily and the hilt can handle a good shock it's okay.
They all break anyway, with duel worthy, the hilt shouldn't break no matter how long you use it. But the blades never last that long, the electronics also don't always last that long. The sound of a heavy grade blade breaking is amazing though.
How thick is a heavy grade blade?
If I put christmas lights on a sword lightsaber?
The problem with 'Duel Worthy' is that nobody understands the difference between a show-duel and actual combat.
What do you prefer for saber companies
Legacy Lightsabers aren’t duel worthy but the Ultrasabers and Saberforge are combat ready Lightsabers.
Out of curiosity, how are kyberlight lightsabers? I kinda like the customization.
WATCH Starwars IRL He made video where he tested the Disney lightsabers and they could go through medium really well
"is it duel worthy" = "If it's a Nokia saber 💀"
I want to go all out, even even if against a friend I want to go till Out of breath(lightsaber dueling not anything else) so should I go with ultrasabers?
ultrasabers is actually really good and pretty cheap which is surprising you should probally get the mystery box with ultra edge heavy grade lightsaber its 10 dollars more.and will cost 100 dollars but you will get 4 lightsabers (without sound btw it's about 230 with shipping for sound)
As a rough guage of toughness maybe they should add a drop rating which is now quite standard in flashlights.e.g. i have 2 lights with a rating of 1.5m and 2m. So light use 0.5-1m med 1-3m heavy duelling 5+m etc
My question is are the apprentice LE V5 and the prophecy v3 doul worthy hilts with ultraedge heavy grade blades?

Ask your saber club what their rules are. The Saber Legion (TSL) rules state, "Saber hilts and blades must consist of parts from approved saber manufacturers or otherwise be approved by the gear inspection staff." Here's their rules page (PDF format): www.saberlegion.org/assets/resources/TSL-Official-Event-Rules-and-Guidelines.pdf
"Duel-worthy"? If your lightsabre can sustain multiple duels with another combatant, with occasional full strength chops and slashes, that's a duel-worthy lightsabre.
Are dark Initiate v2 Sabers good to duel with?
I can’t afford a duel worthy lightsaber but I’m researching it anyway before I go to target to get a $15 dollar lightsaber to practice dueling along in my lounge room before dueling my inexperience friends to make a video
Would an initiate v2 be duel worthy
Well, I can definitely say that the 31” Savi’s workshop blade is more duel worthy then the 37” Saberforge screw in “Full Contact” blade in my Redeemer MK3. I was doing some light to moderate dueling with my 11 year old daughter and the blade broke off at the hilt. No damage to the Savi’s blade at all.
The Saberforge blade broke completely off and fell in the floor.
I realize that this is a thin neck saber, but still. They have it rated for “full force” on there website. This is the Infinity bade, not the neopixel.
I have 4 ultrasabers. But I need one for true duelling. Would you recommend an Initiate V2 for duelling? Or would you recommend something else? Thankyou :O)
There is NO lightsaber dueling around here, 66441!!!
How old do i have to be to do tsl
I think the best ones for heavy dueling are the Sabertrio sabers: their stunt saber, and their FX sabers. (I have an Aeryn and a Skylar FX saber), presuming you select a heavy grade blade. In spite of what they say, I wouldn't take a chance dueling with a Neopixel saber. Sabertrio has excellent customer service, as well. Electrum sabers can be used for dueling as well, provided you get a thick-walled dueling blade. However, they are still ironing out some bugs in their latest soundboard (as I have experienced). But the array of features is incredible, considering the price. Their customer service is top-notch as well. However, if you want a Neopixel blade theirs is, as yet, not suitable for dueling. I would not do any dueling with any Neopixal saber. I think it's just too risky. Never duel with the Hasbro FX sabers or the Master Replica sabers. I have many of the old Master Replica sabers, but I would never duel with them, as they were not made for that. My advice, for what it's worth: for heavy dueling, I would choose either a stunt saber or a (modern) FX saber with a heavy grade dueling blade. (Some will say Ultrasabers, but I have no experience with them, so I can't say). I would never duel with any Pach Store sabers. I you read the fine print they say, "for medium or light dueling". In spite of what they say, I would not duel with ANY of their sabers. (I have three of their sabers.) I also think their top of the line sabers are way overpriced. If you are in doubt about whether any particular saber is heavy duel worthy, CALL THE COMPANY. Better to find out before you buy, so you're not surprised after you get it. Again, only my opinion. I you find some of you find this useful.

DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH ANY OF THE COMPANIES LISTED HERE, and cannot vouch for any of them.
Personally, I would never duel with any Neopixel saber, no matter what any company says. Luke sabers (at least if you mean his saber from Return of the Jedi) are thin neck sabers and as such not recommended for dueling. Stunt sabers are the best for dueling, e.g., Sabertrio Arclytes, but they don't have the features you want. I have lots of sabers, but the only ones I would duel with are my old Sabertrio Aeryn and Skylar. These are very old, and the only features they have are flash-on-clash and color change. I put heavy grade blades in those, and those are fine for dueling. They don't make these any more. They make CFX and Proffie Neopixels, and stunt sabers. Stunt sabers have no sound effects. My two cents, for what it's worth.

Not anything beyond light play no, check out ultrasabers , electrum sabers , vader's vault, or kaizen sabers for something to really duel with.
Ok, easiest breakdown.
Baselit sabers I would consider it heavy dualing capable, even if you break the blade, it's like £20 to replace it, not much of a loss, as for neopixel and hasbro black series sabers, light to medium dualing only, due to the led strips in the blade.
The best way to tell if your saber is duel worthy: how good is the warranty?
Its not duel worthy unless you can catch an attempted murder for trying to hit someone with said lightsaber lol
I'm not part of saber dueling but I've seen people mod legacy/savi sabers so that the blade exterior is a standard saberforge style blade would that be duel worthy?
You'll need a mid grade or heavy grade dueling blade as well
Okay but like what about ultra savers? I ordered an aeon v2 with a standard blade and now that I watched this I’m kinda worried
Tic Tac? standard blades are good for light dueling, still very durable.
Pluto thank you I feel better about that now
Anyone's know how long a dual bladed saber from Ultrasaber will be? I'm getting 32" inch blades, Dark Apprentice V.4 Hilt with a standard coupler.
I tried working out how tall it'd be and it came out as 6 foot 10 and surely that's not correct? I'm about 6ft so I do think I'll be better with long blades but 6'10 seems a bit much.
About that I'd say. I use 32 inch blades on my menace staff . I'm 5 ft 10. It well over my head.
Why not just use a foam material on the outside then in the inner layer u use a strong pvc pipe thingy.
The non-light up ones are best
Are saberforge sabers duel worthy (the heavy kind)
I've been studying/practicing swordsmanship for 17 years, me and my sparring partner use Saberforge and Ultrasabers products for stand-ins during live combat practice all the time instead of using our actual swords. Those sabers, with the Heavy-Grade blades, are very good weapons for practical self-defense. Just get them without sound if you intend to duel that hard. I've already gutted my expensive Saberforge hilts to remove the sound drivers I paid extra for, because they just can't keep up with your motions properly at that level of activity. Everything is a clash to the card.
I think a lot of people who ask this are asking if, lets say, they wanna smack things with this lightsaber for a good fifteen minutes, the blad and hilt will still look good, with no glaring dark spots on the LEDs.
How to tell if something is duel worthy: How many times can I swing it into another lightsaber with intent to kill before it recieves permanent damage. If it is less than 10, it is not duel worthy.
Why sell a replica weapon if it can’t be used in replica fighting?
It's pretty simple, can you hit another saber of the same type and not have damage to the lighting system or blade itself at a full force swipe.
Is artsabers hard duel worthy ?

I like this person
On Christmas 2012 I got a Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader FX light saber in the years since we had heavy duty fight and it hadn’t been until just last year when the Darth Vader one finally gave in and broke and I believe that they are very battle ready
Dual worthy means I can hit a concrete wall, metal pole, and a tree over and over at full force; and the blade only has a tiny mark.
You can easily find a durable metal rgb lightsaber with sound for under 100. So anyone looking for a good budget lightsaber do a good amount of research
To ALL Saber-blade smiths & Sabershops
How 'bout 'tryin' make a plexiglass blade of 1/8 thick tube.....Let's See What it do folks.
Dual worthy to me is if I can hit another lightsaber at full strength and it survives with no damage
I duel with none of them. Only steel swords are for the real deal all the time. I have many lightsabers and I use them only for technic training, and of course , they look amazing😂 I have all solid and the most durable light sabers from affordable to expensive, and let me tell you, they all can if the impact is hard enough or over time, crack and break like glass. Steel is the only thing that won't break and last a life time of heavy dueling. Let's not forget people, and I love star wars but light sabers are heated energy blades that cut through anything, except the mandalorian armor metal, and with that being said, it's fantasy guys , treat light sabers with care in the real world cause man they are a good workout and look amazing, don't destroy em they are beautiful props of a science fiction franchise, Star Wars😂 just have fun at the end of the day but treat the sabers for what they are, props that don't burn through anything.😆🔥👍
I recommend dynamicsabers
Do you think a Vaders Vault standard blade would be good for medium/hard or would a Heavy Grade blade be better for dueling
Does anyone know a brand that can make real good quality duel-worthy sabers? I want to get a super nice quality hilt and blade, with a nice light that won’t get any deadspots (at least from dueling) and that can handle some dueling to commonly dueling. Price doesn’t matter, and not every aspect does, but I would like to pick this saber up, and know it’s not just a shitty plastic sword.
I’m only getting a lightsaber if I can beat the shit out of my friends
I mean... I use a wooden stick-
Well, those can break, too.
why not do the same as the medieval swords comunity and use two terms?like battle ready if it can stand heavy abuse and stage combat that you cant go full force
