i love how she isn’t just going through the motions when she dances she actually connects to the music and PERFORMS IT GIVES ME LIFE !!! most fun floor routine to watch imo shes so fun to watch
2016 Olympics really changed the face of US Gymnastics. For so many years, it was the little blond/pixie brunette set. This time, though, it was strong, really obviously powerful women of all backgrounds. And they rocked the house.
In 2012. It was 3 white women, one asian/spanish woman, and one black woman. In 2016, two black women, one hispanic woman, and two white women. I would not say they were so different. (I do not watch men so I can't comment on them).
Chanel Oberlin honestly just stop, that's so rude and you don't even know Laurie. I've seen your horrible comments on many gymnastics videos and enough is enough!!
Her choreography is way superior to Raisman or Biles. She actually dances in syn with the music, and incorperates tumbling and leaps seamlessly. And it is a really stylish performance. I am always delighted to rewatch this routine.
Her routine might be more “artistic” (which is EXTREMELY subjective), but her difficulty level doesn’t come close. I will take Biles or Raisman over Hernandez every day.
@@pedropelaez Biles probably but Raisman for me no fucking way. In addition to poor choreography/dance, even her tumbling form and execution is mostly shitty with usually poor landings, she only has difficulty and power.
Ralph Bourgeois I somewhat agree, because really her only problem most of the time are the legs, she’s always had sloppy legs, like with her Arabian double front in a pike position
The fact that this didn't make an event finals is a travesty. This is what floor is all about. Tumbling. Leaping. Control. Artistry. It's a shame she wasn't an Olympic floor finalist.
@@hazelnutspred3348 actually she had the 4th best floor routine in QF. The 2 per country rule was what kept her out of the finals. Sorry for the bad english
Hi my name's Catrina yeah her routine is absolutely beautiful but ally has a more difficult floor routine and is just a tad better then Laurie at floor
John Truskolaski sorry I know it’s late. But it was always going to be Simone and aly in the floor finals. Aly isn’t that clean but she has huge difficulty
lmao people down here commenting about the choreography and artistry in her routine as if they have known artistic gymnastics long enough to criticise an Olympian doing her floor routine.
MyWayne1993 i've noticed that people who dislike her style tend to play the Nadia card, like that wasn't 40 years ago. I agree that sometimes Laurie gets too energetic and looks like she's all over the place, but artistry shouldn't be ballet-esque anymore there are so many spices why should we only get sugar lol
Agreed; I don't think Laurie can pull off the balletic, long-lines type of elegance that people seem to demand a lot these days, but she works around the fact that she doesn't have the elegance of, say, Mustafina, or Eythora Thorsdottir, with this choreography (which suits her bubbly personality really well, although yes, it can seem a little unfocused sometimes). Also, at least she dances in time with the music (which is something it seems Aly Raisman can't do to save her life sometimes! but Aly hides it with music that changes tempo a lot so it's hard to see where exactly the beat is).
scientificmusician Artistic doesn't just mean elegance. It's how the entire package fits to the music. Under that definition, I'd say Laurie has one of the most artistic routines out there. The music is bombastic and intense throughout and Laurie fits the musically perfectly. I agree that Thorsdottir was extremely elegant, but Mustafina was not at all. Her routine was a fragmented mess of barely-made spins and lethargic dance. I realize that her routine was made that way out of necessity (health and endurance concerns), but there was nothing artistic or elegant about her routine.
jfeathe1211 I think we are actually in agreement here about Laurie. I specified that Laurie isn't an elegant gymnast, but I never specified that she isn't artistic, and I think her choreography fits her and her music exceptionally well (although it's still a bit spastic for my personal taste but that's just me) so I think it definitely fits the definition of artistry. Mustafina's recent routines are a bit of a mess, I agree. However, her old routines are wonderful (cf. her 2010 floor which has to be one of my favourites) and in general (at least, when she is healthy) she has a particular poise and manner of movement that I find to be elegant. Of course this is not synonymous with artistic -- Ksenia Afanasyeva is elegant but I don't think many of her routines are artistic (or particularly well composed) as they're mostly just arm waving and busted wrists. Similarly with, in the past, Nastia Liukin.
scientificmusician I should have specified that I was emphasizing, not disagreeing what you said about Laurie. I was responding more to all the people out there who are complaining about Laurie not having any artistry. So we definitely are in agreement! Even if Laurie's style doesn't suit everyone, it should be clear that she put together a complex routine loaded with choreography that fit the timing and style of the music. Yes, I also agree that Mustafina put together some masterful floor routines back in the day. I just find it hard to use her as an example of good artistry when most people's memory of her is this past olympics and not much else.
Gahhhh I hope she wins!! Although I think Simone is coming back as well 😅😅 sooooo knowing Simone she will win gold obviously but hopefully Laurie can get second !
I've been following gymnastics since the days of Olga and live piano accompaniment, and I must say that Laurie's choreography is delightful. I never grow tired of watching this routine. Simone is a powerhouse, but her dance moves are nothing to write home about. After all, it IS artistic gymnastics, but Simone's dancing comes across as an after thought. Ka Po Chu's comment below is right on the money. Let's hope these girls get some rhythm by the time they get to Tokyo! Love them all, but Laurie is a standout.
her first pass is quite low and is much more like a double whip than double layout (like a lot of gymnasts but hers really does look like a double whip). her other passes are really good, and it looks like goes even higher on her double back tuck than her double layout.
@QPHashSS77 I agree with you (even though I have nothing against '90s tumbling), but I have to point out the phrase is "quote-unquote," as in the beginning and end of a quotation.
@QPHashSS77 Happens to me all the time. My dad had a colleague with a seven-figure salary who regularly used the phrase "it's a doggy dog world out there," not realizing the phrase is "it's a dog-eat-dog world."
If they had put her to do all-around instead of Douglas, she would've easily scored higher than Douglas scored (gap of 14.765 on bars). With a little more effort, maybe would've even beaten Raisman (gap of 15.241) and qualified. They did the same in 2015 Glasgow Worlds with Nichols - if she had made UB instead of Dowell (who failed), she would have easily wiped out Raisman and Douglas and qualified with Biles to final. But in TF, when best scores is needed, they used her to all events.
The choice wasn't between Laurie and Gabby, the choice was between Laurie and Aly. Gabby was the team's #2 on bars and #4 on every other event, so she was always going to compete on every event. The choice was between Laurie and Aly for that #4 bars spot. It's entirely likely they would've chosen Aly over Laurie despite Laurie's stronger bars because they wanted Aly in the AA, but it didn't matter either way because Laurie got injured during podium training and couldn't compete bars. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of how gymnastics qualifications work to think Gabby could've been replaced by Laurie.
I know I've come on this late, but I've been reading the comments here. Many criticizing "those who don't understand gymnasts" and comparing techniques, etc. Yes, I agree that her difficulty is not equal to the others, but it is fun and ENTERTAINING. She has great appeal to the casual fan. I know you want to dismiss the casual fan as ignorant and can't appreciate technique, etc. But gymnastics can't forget that, without the casual fan, there wouldn't be the resources to do what we do. There's a reason it's front and center prime time at the Olympics. I'm just saying we can't forget to entertain the crowds.
I never get tired of watching this routine, simply amazing. You can see in her face how much she loves it
I know! She's smiling, and looks like she's doing her favorite thing ever.
