I was in a theatre in Toronto at a premiere for Transformers and when that helicopter transformed the audience erupted with a cheer so loud it felt like a live sporting event. One of the most memorable pop culture moments of my life.
Todd absolutely loves his team. You can flatter him all you want, he will bring up his team. Love having him on the couch. And he's totally involved in every single jaw dropping scene I have seen.

That first shot of Blackout transforming was the first time I'd been truly wowed by special effects since the T-1000. Todd is one of my idols and I didn't even know who he was until now. Thanks all for putting the spotlight on these truly brilliant creators.
I cannot emphasize enough just how wonderful it is to have Todd on again. His insights, his processes, the skills and talent and most importantly, his vision, he executes in his work is sublime.
Very very happy that Todd constantly credits the artists who worked on these shots alongside him, especially because a lot of these people rarely get credit for the amount of work and time they put in. A majority of the time, it just falls under the name of the studio. Or even just the movie.
That Tomorrow Land shot is insane, same as the Ghost Protocol one. I never considered the multi reflected wires that had to be removed for that 🤯 VFX artists are truly underrated. There should be an Oscar for best subtle VFX shot. As for a suggestion for someone on the coach... I know you can do it one day... but Del Toro!

I have no experience with vfx outside of these segments, but you all have taught me enough that I had my hands over my face in horror for some of these explainers lol It is mindblowing how much work goes into this "movie magic." VFX truly is an art form.
The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight

Theres a shot that I absolutely love in the opening of Get Rich Or Die Trying. The shot of the mirror and reflection being rattled by the music. It's a short shot but it so good to open the movie with 👌

Loved this episode a lot! Always feel excited to get to know these information from artists who have actually worked on these shots! This gives a lot of ideas regarding how to plan a shot.
Iconic shot for sure but what bothered me was that I never understood the physics of Tom cruise being push to the side and not forward when the missile exploded. It always bugged me...
Please react to the "Two weeks" scene from the movie "Total Recall" (1990). I think it's a pretty decent combination of practical and (early) CGI. There are a lot of other great stuff in this movie as well. (I believe you already reacted to the x-ray machine scene)
I think my favorite part of these guests is how they credit other people who also did so much work to bring a shot to life. Just shows the true amount of teamwork and creativity that goes into film making.
A few suggestions: 1) Bill Westenhofer - led the R&H team on Life of Pi and through bankruptcy 2) V Srinivas Mohan - one of the most well known Indian VFX supervisors (recently RRR, Bahubali, Enthiran) 3) Ed Catmull - no clue how you would pull it off but if people liked the Paul Debevec episode then early CG tech and eventually the first few Pixar films would be an unbelievable episode 4) Someone legendary in the practical effects world like Chris Corbould

Awesome episode guys, this really makes me appreciate how hard these visual effects artists have to work, and with the deadlines and the requirements growing year after year, it's okay when they flub things, Sometimes. They genuinely care about their art form.
I would love to see Dennis Muren. He's my friend's uncle and growing up, he would on occasion mention his uncle who worked on Star Wars, which I didn't believe until the internet was a thing.

Anyone else bothered by the fact the chopper shot should blow Tom Cruise toward the camera and not to the right of the shot like it does?! Like… that’s not where the blast is coming from
It buggs a lot of people, and they actually talked about it in some other video a year or two back. But it would be interesting to hear what this guy had to say about it. He's so passionate about making the scenes epic, that I can only imagine the disbelief when he's told Tom were to be thrown sideways by the explosion. And then having ti become the most well known scene in the entire movie, used to for promotions and every thing. And every time he sees it there's Tom being thrown sideways into the car... Every time it's shown that thing is repeated, up close and in your face...
Gareth Edwards as a guest would be epic! Indie VFX legend that did a whole feature film & BBC drama series basically from his bedroom, now directing big films like Rogue One, Godzilla & The Creator. Fun to look up: In 2008 he taught a 10hour After Effects course on fxphd. Showing how he did the 250 vfx shots for his BBC series "Attilla the Hun". I watched the course when it just came out, it's a real gem.
Talking of stitching two shots together where they don’t quite match at the seam have a watch of The Rules of Attraction. A shot where we’re watching a split screen of two characters that end up meeting and that split screen becomes one shot. Very subtle but really nicely done .
the scene with Blackout transforming was one of the most mind-blowing things i had ever seen...i really didn't expect the effects for the Autobots and Decepticons in the first Transformers movie to be this amazing...
Gotta say, it is really awesome to see how much the compositing does to the basic render. Always thought the render before compositing do look more "finished". Really valuable insight!
Todd and the whole team are amazing (and cool Shining socks!) and all the shots are great! But one thing I can never get past no matter how well it's done is Tom being blown PERPENDICULAR to the blast/at right angles to the explosion, into the car. I mean, all that great work and...!! I'm not a literal-thinking type and if it has an emotional or internal logic I'm all in. But...
