@@AlisterBulman as i mentioned somewhere, he can't travel to the US by himself at 14, so if he were to go to LA they'd have to bring his parents with him. logistically it might pose too many problems and be too costly. But you never know... maybe. Or they could do it over zoom.
Lord and Miller: “HEY good job - we’re gonna grind and crunch you” JK I’m sure re: Preston they were compliant with child labor etc, but that movie didn’t suffer from a lack of creative flex so much as it did from a workflow and editing overload Good product; bad production
It's amazing that 9 years ago the lego movie set a new bar for CG realism, and now a teenager can get the same result in his bedroom after school *and have it wind up in a real feature film.* There's a lot of terrible stuff in the world, but the work the blender foundation has done to make this stuff freely accessible is just so wonderful and tickles my heart. Preston has a LONG career ahead of him.
I loooove blender. I use it for 3D modeling/printing, but I have checked the renderes and holy hell last 15 years is insaaane progress, everything looks so great even without any composing❤
I'm still amazed that a fan animation from a 14 year old managed to impress the animation team for spiderverse so much they got to work on the actual film. It's honestly incredible and I hope they keep doing it
it impressed the animation bosses: Lord and Miller screwing with the workflow up to the 11th hour with new demands and additions is what created the grind and crunch on the project… they wouldn’t make Monday decisions until Wednesday for work that needed to be finished for Tuesday
Reminds me of a Doctor Who fan that had a similar experience, ended up creating the opening titles for the 12th Doctor and a lot of other effects. Believe they go by "NeonVisual".
The work blender artists are able to do in non-professional settings is amazing! I love that you guys are highlighting these talented people. More please! Maybe invite them on the show!
I have one for you guys that you HAVE to do: the Season 3 finale of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. The "accession" of Mayor Richard Wilkins III, his transformation into a giant snake, the destruction of Sunnydale High School, and "well gosh!" I think you could have a lot of fun with it.
Your whole commentary on the Halo jump scene reminds me of what Penn Jillette often says about magic: "once part of the illusion falls, the whole thing falls". I'm sure that even though he hasn't worked in VFX that much he would be quite an insightful guest and probably have a few recommendation of more practical VFX in various movies.
On that final note, really do keep doing what you love! I went form making GTA cinematics on RUclips to working at Rockstar Games. Follow your dreams, and kick everyone who tells you otherwise :)
just wanted give a comment to show my apprication for you guys shoving off the kids work in the end. more off that really love seeing passion project getting promoted.
About the Tom Cruise stunt jumping a motorcycle off a mountain, I've always been surprised no one has likened it to the old Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me intro where he skis off the edge of the mountain and opens the parachute after a long decent and it's the Union Jack (flag). It's an amazing bit of suspense cause it was also a real stunt. I forget the name of the movie.
Great stuff as always. That point break clip motivated me to find some stuff online since it had been so long since I saw this movie. There is an earlier skydiving scene which is equally breathtaking. I think the major actors actually had to learn how to skydive. Also the Film movie helmet cam that i found while searching is crazy big for today's helmet cam standards. I am old enough to remember when this movie came out, and my memory is that they used one of those indoor skydiving fans outside with the sky in the background to get a few of the scenes. The actor being held up with air and nothing else.
they did a video about animation like that a little while ago. I don't think they reacted to The Prince of Egypt (which is a great movie) but they reacted to some other 2d animations that used 3d in them like some scenes in Tarzan, and I think they've reacted to some animes using the same technique
Y’all should look at the new Little Mermaid live-action remake now that it’s out. There’s a scene that does some interesting stuff with underwater explosions.
That Tom Cruise hanging off the place scene is still crazy to me, he really had to wait for the plane to turn around and land to get off that. Blows my mind a little
YES!! FINALLY!! I like Tom Cruise and that he does his own stunts, but in the movies you can't really tell they were "real" stunts because there's so much CGI behind it that you lose connection. For example, when he does the underwater scene he said he learn how to keep your breath for like 6 minutes, but the final shot is so distracting that he could have done 12 immersion of 30 seconds each and no one would have noticed. Such a shame.
CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION: I know when we talk about bad effects, the general consensus is the main issue is time and money. Studios don't give effects houses enough time to do shots or effects houses out bid each other and don't get enough money to do the scenes perfectly. BUT. I would love for the Corridor Crew to examine times and reasons when the effect was done poorly simply because of the artist's failings or technological advancements. It would be more interesting than constantly hearing about crunch time and low budgets
Aarrgghh! That's crazy! What a legendary kid! I loved the Lego Spidey! I was hoping we'd see him again in the film... maybe part 2??? Anyway, you want bad fire VFX shots?!? Check out Anti-Life pleeeaaasseeee!!
What gets me the most from the “Point Break” skydiving scene is the fact that Keanu Reeves is holding the gun with his left hand and the stunt double is holding it with his right hand in some scenes…🤣
0:38 Another cool train short film is called Steam Speed from Digital Light Studio. Another amazing animated short film is called Ruin by Wes Ball, it's the short that got him the role of director for Maze Runner due to the similar ruined city covered by overgrowth style.
Hi guys ! A great episode as always. I would recommend that you take a look at the openning titles of the movie Hard Rain (1998 from Mickeal Salomon with Christian Slater and Morgan Freeman). I think there is a lot more going on that it looks like and a pretty smooth transition from a CG shot at the end (for a 1998 movie). Anyway, keep going, cheers from France !
If you guys haven't, can you please talk about the movie Constantine (2005). This movie has great CGI and I feel that it's an underrated movie. Thank you!
It's really great you reviewed that amateur train animation. You should start pulling in an amateur animation once in awhile, and react to it. Give some advice to newer animators.
Preston Mutanga made this in a month, after school, with a box of scraps! Well sir I'm not Preston Mutanga. This is probably why Lego Spider-Man was labeled one of their best by Miguel during the film.
Honestly u guys should look at the halo jump from Godzilla 2014, both the scene in the movie and the teaser trailer version, as I think they are both really interesting, especially in comparison to the mi6 halo jump sequence
13:21 the only thing they need to add here was some wobbling and slight deviations in directions as if he's avoiding some rocks initially would have made it far more believable, the ride was too smooth which was the problem, just that little bit or even at the end if he hit a rock and flew off the edge, just some sort of interaction with how rough nature is.
I don't think you've looked at Black Mirror S4:E5 "Metalhead," but I'm watching it now and it has a pretty great robot dog. Thought of y'all especially given your Boston Robotics parody
The real question is, was there a Lego scene planned for Across the Spiderverse before they called Preston? Or was that a late add? Because if they happened to already be planning a Lego scene, talk about a coincidence
man jordans advice, to do what u dream of, incase the right person is watching. is so impactful as an artist trying to make a connecting deep album. I have the skills I think but the idea of thinking nobody will ever hear it or see it, has always been my deterrent. after that last segment. im starting to believe you can really be anyone, as long as you have the talent.
Loved this episode! Thanks for featuring my work :)
I thought they were going to say someone actually recreated it with Lego later.
Not that someone so young just did it by themselves. Nice work.
When do we get to see you talking about what you did, and what else you love to see, on the couch @legome_theog?

But nope, it was done by a solo child.
His work and dedication is amazing. A true inspiration!

No waaaaaaay, it's the donut guy!!!!

Dwayne actually did a bunch of parachuting for Point Break that was used in another scene.
-So why didn't you do your homework?
-Sorry Miss, I got caught up with my scene in a big Hollywood production.
Damn. What an incredible thing. Started as a remake of a trailer. Ended up making part of the movie.
The moto scene is literally a scene from James Bond Goldeneye,
That was very hooky too
Love when the boys get giggly. Good episode.

Great episode, lots of fun energy!
In the movie The Offering, around 60 minutes into the movie there is an interesting scene with fire combined with a cgi character spawning behind it
Re: Mission Impossible - couldn't Tom have just jumped off the cliff without the motorbike?
The fire scene looks pretty good, looked real to me, except no light emitted
Wow that is so cool. Good for that kid. I hope his parents are proud and he’s happy. Way to go bud!
You must be kidding, Point Break is a freaking CLASSIC! WATCH IT NOW
Great Episode! When are you going to cover "Flight of the Navigator" 1986? The VFX there are wayyyy ahead of it's time!

The final battle scene from the Daniel Radcliffe movie Horns. Features a snake forcing itself down a man’s throat.
should actually make an animation short of the sky dive scene like how you guys explained it with a robbery lol
on the skydive and storm discussion, let's remember the point of the scene isn't that the stunt is real or not, that's for the enthusiasts to know.

I thought the parashute scene in MI6 was quite well done
Please take a look at His Dark Materials. The bear CG looks great!
god after that train crash I really wanna see a VFX challenge where everyone tries to make a big crash
