Shivam wouldn't have been able to cast March of Otherworldly Light to remove Academy Rector because of Phyrexian Censor as he cast Mother of Runes on the same turn.
Wouldn't matter unless Jerry had interaction since could have been done on Jerry's upkeep.
In fact he couldnt do it in his endstep since there was no etb trigger which would have passed priority
@@SaltyBrolaf 117.3b The active player receives priority after a spell or ability (other than a mana ability) resolves.
@@SaltyBrolaf fairly new to magic, so I could be understanding this wrong, but doesn’t priority pass at the resolution of an effect? So the resolution of chord of calling (which put Academy Rector on the board) should pass priority around right?
@@brycemattson4913 SaltyBrolaf is incorrect. After the Chord is done resolving, everyone gets priority again before we move to the cleanup step. There's no requirement that something must trigger for players to get priority again. So ignoring the misplay with the Censor, Shivam would get priority again during his end step, after the Chord resolves, and would get a chance to cast the March during his end step.
Is that world renowned cEDH professional blue player Shivam from the CAG?
Loving Jerry's commitment to the bit and just staring down the camera
Wow, Noted spike Shivam Bhatt really likes popping off on turn one.
why wait?
That die in the beginning exactly where the cactus' eye should be is absolute cinema.
Jim not casting twinflame on Etali and letting it stay exiled hurt my soul deeply.
There was a Thalia and a Vryn Wingmare in play, with only one untapped land in play. He couldn't cast it even if he wanted to.
@@Natedogg2
I see, I also wondered, now I am enlightened. Thanks.
the rector being exiled from March couldnt happen when it did due to phyrexian censor, Shivam had already cast a non-phyrexian spell that turn being Mother of Runes since all this was happening at his end step
Since Jerry isn't playing blue, I can't imagine the game changing if March is considered cast in Jerry's upkeep instead. It was exiled not destroyed afterall. I'm curious though, are there answers Jerry could have had?
@@joshtaylor8832 I had a reply typed out, but Minsc's ability is sorcery speed only, so there is no winning interaction stack for Jerry there. The game was not changed.
@@joshtaylor8832 Couldn´t Jerry just kill the Rector with Minsc at instant speed to find the Saffi Gerrard Twinshot combo?
Nevermind Minsc is only in sorcery speed.
I noticed Shivam said after Jan's Magus came down his lands 'wouldn't hurt him this turn', but as long as he didn't need both colorless from the Ancient Tomb to cast something he could tap it for green using the Yavimaya under Jims control. Inconsequential overall but just something I thought is noteworthy if he were to venture back in to some more cEDH. Great game overall though.
Im just here for Etali. Always support my son
Sweet game! I love seeing Winota in cEDH.
Neither of these things were huge, but a couple things I was curious about:
- Should the Phyrexian Walker have attacked Jim at 16:40? You'd get an extra Winota trigger in your second combat.
- Why not cast Twinflame at 20:14? You can make another token copy of Etali and cast more spells (though Imperial Recruiter already tutors for Squee).
There were two Ranger Captains out. Sure while one free Twinflame is free, the noncreature spells could have been stuck in exile under a Ranger Captain activation. In the instance a Food Chain was amongst the exile under a Ranger Captain effect, it would have sucked. Alternatively, Food Chain may be in hand who know.
Continued watching the video-FC was in hand.
The double thalia tax still has to be paid on 'free' spells and Jim did not have 2 mana
I didn't catch that Twinflame is a noncreature and would have needed the tax paid, good call. And yeah, accidentally exiling a combo piece like Food Chain would have been bad (Jim had it in hand this time, but it's not really a misplay IMO even if the free spells were actually free, just to avoid further shenanigans).
I swear, Jim has to do these captions during the deck intros. There is nobody else that embodies the phrase "Mono-White No Fun was my high school nickname" more than him, both in terms of humor and just the sort of general vibe they put out.
Alex writes the intro cards, glad you enjoy them!
@@TheSpikeFeedersYeah, that tracks too. Alex is pretty dang funny also. Thanks for the reply!
Two thoughts
-Jan blowing up Cathar Commando with the Mogg Fanatic didn’t make much sense knowing that Jim just searched for Squee, and a food chain was on the way. If he wanted to take something out, maybe a mana dork or the Mother of Runes.
-With Etali running rampant and Underworld Breach still powerful, I feel like Aven Interrupter would be so good in this format. It’s good in counter wars, great to stop Etali’s free casts and food chain loops, and an evasive body for Tymna decks
Wonderful game, wonderful people. And I know now again why I do not play cEDH but laid back casual :)
I loved Shivam’s subtle Adventure Time reference
At 21:55, Jan could have sacrificed mog fanatic in response to the Mom activation to kill Mom, right? Not necessarily a better play than killing the cathar commando, but opportunities to kill Mom are somewhat rare.
Definitely. And Jim tutored for Squee which means food chain is incoming and the commando could have saved the day. Jerry's llanowar elf was probably the best target. It happens!
Who writes the jokes at the bottom of the commander spotlights during the introductions? They are always gold!
Now to the mistakes I noticed.
Jerry casts Llanawar Elves but does not have it enter tapped, as it is a non-phyrexian spell (not game-impacting)
14:26 Shivam would not have been able to cast March of Otherworldy Light as he had already cast his one non-phyrexian spell for the turn, Mother of Runes.
Alex writes them!
Minsc sacs at sorcery speed so exiling during his upkeep would've also worked so the mistake in timing doesn't really matter too much no?
Thats a pretty steep ward cost was glossed over and it shouldnt have been, brilliant
Woo Spikes + Shivam!!! :)
Look at this, my favorite pod!
Enjoying Shivam at the table, great game
13:49 Shivam just became my favorite guest
Contrary to everyone yelling about the March misplay, I’d be interested in knowing if Jerry had interaction to use with untapped mana upon upkeep cast of March
The wrong Heliod is in the thumbnail 😢. Was looking forward to Vigilance typal cedh!
Yeah this one tripped me up. 😢
that rick commander sounds awesome and what it offers, might be my new commander
Well now y'all have to play a mono blue game. For the sake of BaLaNcE! Great game always a joy for Shivam to join these
Immediate upvote for the adventure time reference
Enjoyable game, although why wasn't Shivam using Heliod's ability to give lifelink to his Phyrexian, doubling his early clock on the rest of the table?
at around 15:00 I think Shivam could not have cast that march due to his own Phyrexian sensor since he just casted the mother of runes that turn. Or am I missing something?
EDIT: I guess that didn't matter that much since he just could have casted it in Jerrys upkeep, But jerry could have had anything in his hand with the untapped mana he had at that point
Surprised shivam swords'd the magus considering it wouldnt have hurt him all that much - he had mox diamond + plains in hand. Also surprised by Jim not casting twinflame. Super surprised Jan killed the cathar for no reason after Jim tutored for Squee. Feels like it isn't the biggest logical leap to assume Jim has food chain from that position haha.
Shivam had the God-hand in that opener!
Edit :: Etali winning warms my heart.
Turn 1s in cedh are wild...
The meta seems pretty narrow atm in cedh. It’d be cool if yall took commanders that weren’t necessarily meta and tried to push them as cedh as you could, i’d watch dat shi
All 4 of these commanders are not considered meta as per the tournament statistics (not in the top 20 of decks). All of them use casual-leaning strategies, I don't know what would be more refreshing. On the contrary these are established decks that have had a following for quite some time, optimizing them etc, but certainly not part of the metagame at this point. Wouldn't call the meta narrow after watching this video
When heliod player buried the 1spell guy I thought "yeah, etali wins now"
shouldnt that land tax have cost 3 at 22:44 because of the mare and thalia?
Shivam ignored his own effect, he cast a MoM and a March in the same turn, both non-phyrexian.
Super spike Shivam is best shivam.
4:12 it says if you are not the starting player and he is the starting player
Shivam had the Gemstone Caverns but he was 3rd in turn order.
Jim that's evil frist turn dumping that cat was hard to watch like I know it doesn't seem that good but it's a good card it's save so much stuff but good games over all just wow that painful for a second to watch
I really like the light green “spike feeders” color of sleeves that i have seen on other videos of yalls. Where would i find them, because i tried the two bigger LGSs in my area and even did a little looking online but was unable to find them.
They're Gamegenic Matte Prime sleeves in the Lime colour. I just buy them at my LGS!
You put the other heliod in the vid image
at 18:25 combat celebrant shouldn't be attacking after exerting it it should be tapped and unable to attack
The Celebrant has vigilance from Rick's ability, and exerting the creature doesn't cause it to become tapped. It prevents it from untapping during their next untap step, but exerting doesn't cause it to become tapped.
15:26 ignoring the fact that shivam already cast a non phyrexian spell, couldnt jerry have just activated minsc for zero targeting rector in response to the march to kill it and still get to tutor an enchantment?
Minsc can only be activated at sorcery speed.
@@TheSpikeFeeders thanks, i actually just found someone else mentioning that in the comments as well!
I think that Land Tax should have costed 3 because of Thalia & Wynmare
Just wanted to say, when Jerry played his BoP I was a little disappointed it wasn't followed by a Mmmm Bop. Great game nonetheless.
No blue is less surprising than no black imo
Why not cast the heat shimmer and keep digging for something? 20:09
twinflame*** my bad
There was a Thalia and a Wingmare in play. It would have cost two mana to cast it, and he only had one mana available.
There’s no Dimir AKA No 2/3s of Crim
casting mox diamond without discarding a land?
They didn't show it in the video, but he did discard a Plains (you can see it in the graveyard shortly after the Mox entered).
Fun guest + game, nice
18:23 why does the celebrant die from the phyrexian censor blocK? it has +2/+2 and first strike right?
No. Rick is giving it +2/+2, lifelink, and vigilance, not first strike.
I'm no cedh enthusiast so I don't understand why Jim didn't cast the free Twinflame to get more Etali free stuff :v
There was a Thalia and a Vryn Wingmare in play, and Jim only had access to one mana and couldn't pay the tax.
@@Natedogg2 Ohhh! ty, missed that
Can we get a all blue cedh?
Did Shiva discard to mox diamond?
You can see the land in his graveyard - it was just off camera.
Jim can cast Etali in turn 3
Etali winning thru 3 white stax decks just goes to show you how stax is officially dead and the worst cedh strategy
That's a way of seeing it I suppose. I see it more as a testament of how absolutely broken food chain lines are. I mean the expression "food chain wins games" is rarely wrong haha.
@papaUrabrask food chain is great but not the best combo in cedh. One drannith Magistrate and every food chain combo crumbles.
The problem with stax is no table navigates it correctly. Shivam should have been using all those turns to kill a single player, and also using Heliod to give his Phyrexian lifelink and start buffing him too to double the clock. When your strategy relies on damage and you spread it around, you are one third as effective. Same with Winota, he should be focusing one player down (probably Minsc since he can win under Rule of Law with any creature tutor, and Winota would eventually outvalue the Heliod who was buying them both time with the RoL creature).
And also, killing the only Food Chain answer with Mogg Fanatic was a amassive blunt. Literally gave the game to Jim. That always happens in stax games, people are mentally taxed and they remove cards that hold other players down for free. You cannot play Stax in tournaments because your average opponent will not keep in mind who else this certain stax piece keeps in check, just so they lose to the now unlocked player (as it happened here too).
If there's no blue why am I so sad
11:23 you said to watch for it. I watched for it and i seent’t it.
Shouldn't Jim have been able to cast one of the exiled cards from his first Etali trigger on his next turn? The note at the end says they have to be cast immediately but why is that when Etali doesn't say "this turn"?
Since there's no time frame given, like "until end of turn" or "for as long as it remains exiled", you cast them while Etali's trigger is resolving or not at all. Anything you don't cast when Etali's trigger is resolving can't be cast on a future turn.
Non-blue CEDH = basically a race. Might as well play casual. 😂
Couldn't Jerry have targeted the Academy Rector with Minsc's ability where X is 0 to kill it?
Minsc's ability can only be activated as a sorcery, so it can't be activated at the end of Shivam's turn.
Any particular reason why you didn’t cast the Twinflame on Etali?
There was a Thalia and a Vryn Wingmare in play, so it would have cost two mana to cast, and he only had access to one mana. Even if he wanted to cast it, he couldn't.
Maybe I'm being a bit of a sour sport, but I feel like I've noticed more gameplay errors lately (and thankfully, comments edited in addressing them!). I appreciate the effort it takes to make this content, but I expect a little more from The Spike Feeders playing a competitive format. Especially with at least one judge sitting at the table (I know Jan is a judge, do not know about any other players).
Those attacks were very "non-cEDH". GO FOR THE KILL, swing the person with the least hp, not the one with the most.
If you are going to play cEDH, you should aim to pilot competitively too.
How do you stop people from just using different flavors of Thoracle combo in every game? Ban Island.
Take notes, RC. ;-)
Quite some Thoracle lists play one island at most due to Tainted Pact.
STILL need that All Will Be One hat. Does anyone have a link?
It was sold as merch at Magic Cons, not sure if it is available from wizards/other resellers
wouldn't it be great if youtube replaced the thumbs down with a heart...spread the idea and the love!
Mox diamond should have been sacrified without discarding the land card which he didn't play? Allowed swords, commander the next turn, unless I missed something. Oh well, nobody is perfect. Fun game!
Looks like he discarded a plains, it's there under his graveyard when he uses the Mox Diamond. He just doesn't announce it.
@@crimsonleg4237 thanks, didn't notice that
i discarded a plains. you can see it in my graveyard. i announced it, but it didn't make it into the final edit for some reason
He actually exiled a plains. It should have been in the graveyard rather than exile but it didn't really matter this game.
We need better decks, that episode was too long.
@Jan
