It's amazing that one of two times I've met Vin Scully in person was walking to Busch Stadium passing the Adam's Mark Hotel there where the Dodgers stayed in St. Louis. I walked by a bus and there was Mike Scioscia AND Vin Scully pulling their bags out of the belly of the bus. I helped them pull one big bag out and shook both their hands. It was right in front of my wife and two sons........but what a moment. I was thanked for helping and we continued walking to the stadium. I never thought about a photo-op thinking it would be awkward. It was 1991.........Love my Dodgers! Vin Scully is the greatest!
Let's not forget Dick Enberg, who was the voice of the Angels, Rams, and UCLA Bruins before he went to network television full-time in the late 1970s. Like Vin Scully, Enberg also retired after the 2016 MLB season. He was as much a fixture of Southern California sports as Vin Scully, Don Drysdale, Ross Porter, Jerry Coleman, Chick Hearn, and Bob Miller were as sportscasters. Of the long-time sportscasters that have graced Southern California for decades, only Bob Miller with the Kings, Ralph Lawler with the Clippers, and Ted Leitner with the Padres are still active among the long-time Southern California sportscasters.
A true icon. Vin Scully will be missed. Actually a little history, Vin actually called the first NFL regular season game at the big A when the Rams moved to Anahein in 1980 in week 1 vs. the Detroit Lions for CBS with the late former Washington Redskins and LA Rams coach George Allen.
At 1:01 and even 0:23, Alex Curry pronounces Vin's surname as "Scooley" instead of "Skully." How the hell did she even get considered for that job? Oh, right--they wanted female eye candy for the mostly male audience. Hey, pinhead TV execs, we're not so hard up to see big boobs that we'll forego basic knowledge from the commentators. And don't tell me about diversity and equality. Merit alone should determine if one gets an assignment, not gender or skin tone.
