- within recent news persona 6 has been leaked to potentially release in 2025, this persona news inspired myself and many others on theorising what the next mainline persona title Atlus will release, within this video i make a case for the protagonist for persona 6 to be a female, we see within games like persona 2 very briefly dark topics for women are explored with Lisa's shadow however it wasn't explored in depth which i a cursed jessie feel that could be explored further.

the most obvious argument for a female protagonist in P6, is that Persona is strongly inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and JoJo part 6 had a female protagonist

Most likely cuz females are chill with playing guy characters in main guys but men don't usually choose games with female characters.
In online games they'll choose a female oddly enough. But big games, they'd lose money cuz lots of guys will bail out on it besides fans.

I think it should be an option like it was portable and have both genders fit into the narrative and themes of the story. Because trust me Atlus can’t keep getting away with making characters like Ryuji and Yusuke and NOT expect me to wanna be a girl (because I literally am) just to date them.

i feel like gender norms, abuse and so on have already been explored well enough by persona especially in p4 and 5, and while i disagree that the male protags only have personalities in the anime adaptations (in the games you can get hints to who they are from mannerisms and dialogues options, and the few lines of dialogue in the case of joker) i understand wanting a protag similar to femc again, if nothing else it'd be great for some variety at this point, and while unlikely having both options become a standard in the series would be great too, I just really wanna see what they do with p6 cause this formula in p3 4 and 5 could get really stale if they don't change it up enough, and I'm a bit worried how much they're boxing themselves in by making p6 cast be just high schoolers yet again

Jokes aside the leaks recently have given info that the MC will be male but there will be a focus on a female character you will control and play as in P6. And a FemC is always welcome by Megaten/Persona fans. I am assuming the developers have been used to writing male MCs more that happen to self inserts since the devs claim that for Metaphor Refantazio the Protag wont be a self insert and actually have his own character.

I hope there's an option to be a guy or a girl, I'd pick the guy since I like relating somewhat to the character's experience but I do want them to have more personality since the self insert thing is getting really old

With FemC being cut from P3R, the future of female protagonist in P6 looks bleak.
There was an actual reason for that though
Femc was cut from Reload because it would have been a lot of extra development time and money, people are already complaining about the price of the answer dlc, Femc would cost even more

If we were to get a Femc, it would likely be for self-insert purposes and to diversify the romance options. It's probable that a femc would simply be an option rather than having an entire game dedicated to her, though I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of her having her own game. Let’s just hope that in the next game they do a better job at making female characters especially ones that touch on predominantly female topics. It’s a bit sad that their best female charter isnt really a female but rather death itself.

I've been a lifelong fan of persona and SMT in general. I'm just so tired of playing as a teenage boy, i really don't give a shit anymore about being a teenage boy. Let me be a female protagonist, let me date those boys!
Even if you make some good points or whatever, Atlus doesn't need to risk making changes, when most players feel there's no problem with the current male protagonist, just accept it.

I'm not so sure. They made P3R in response to the Persona Anniversary poll of most requested remake. That same anniversary also had a gender poll which, *iirc, showed an almost equal distribution of men and women players.
Given that, they may include a gender option for the P6 MC.

While I do actually agree that Persona 6 should have a female MC, because having a female MC does change the direction a story can go in, but I disagree with the notion that it provides substantially more personality to the MC purely because the MC is now a girl. I think the issue with Persona MC blandness stems from the attempt to make Persona MC's blank slates, in no way does it have to do with them being men. Various plot points in many games couldn't have happened if the MC was female. The dynamic between MC and Sumire, as well as MC and Akechi, would've been completely different if the MC was female. Also the female MC likely wouldn't have even gotten accused of assault at the very beginning of the game, nor would she have had so many rumors going on about her during school, at least not in the same light. On top of that there would be a complete group dynamic shift in Persona 4. The addition of a FEMC doesn't really add to the plot, it can really only change its dynamic. I think overall Persona MC's need to become less bland, and games should have the option to pick between male and female like P3P. That said, I know having both male and female would take up more resources, so if Atlus does have only 1 protagonist for P6, I hope it's a female one to make the game standout from the series as a whole.
I think the P6 MC will be personality-less regardless of their gender. Thus, their gender should be optional since it won't change anything, besides the romance options. I doubt that they'll ever create a not-straight Persona MC.

Atlus may be a male-dominated subsidiary but surely, a certain number of them aren’t against the idea.
If Persona 6’s main protagonist is not a girl, I will pray that Persona 7 will use that opportunity.
I would def play p6 if it had a female lead only, and I think the option should just be standard for the series going forward, but some points in this vid seem hella biased tho 😭😭
Like with the femc of p3, you can clearly tell some hold it in high regard just because it's one of very few female leads in Persona. The character itself was pretty flawed and saying she has a unique personality, only to then say the male mcs don't except for the adaptations is kinda silly, def considering she doesn't even have any adaptations. Also saying that guys are kinda basic and girls are complex because of puberty seems a bit silly too. It's not really comparable, they are both entirely different experiences, which is why I agree a femc would be more than valid, just a bit of a strange remark tbh
To add to this.. In the case of p3's adaptation, Makoto may not carry the social expectations of a woman, he does quite literally carry the entire games themes and message, with not so basic emotions, reasoning or motivations.
Persona is not the only game series that has issues with having a female main character.....Breath of Fire, Castlevania, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, SMT, etc.

@@ACursedJessie You're underselling it even then. Terra, Celes, Yuna, Lightning, and Serah are all female protags from FF- all of which take the leading role in their respective games/arcs.
Castlevania has Sonia, Charlotte, Shanoa, Sypha and Maria as playable protagonists, but usually only Maria, Charlotte and Shanoa are typically remembered.
Of course, these gals aren't meant to be self-inserts. They're characters in their own right. On the other hand, where there are meant to be self-inserts/avatars:
Dragon Quest has multiple games with fully customizable protags and 3, 4 _(you get to go full lesbian in this one, which is awesome),_ and both Heroes games allows you the choice between female and male protags.
SMT is also made by Atlus so it doesn't exactly help the dirth of female lead characters in their games...
Not familiar enough with Breath of Fire to speak on that fact.
I mean, there's a reason a lot of people are upset that there is no P3 FemC in reload. And it's (mostly) not because Persona fans are attracted to women (Because they're not, all Persona fans are gay, even the straight ones). Persona 6 being a female protagonist game would result in some (dumbasses) saying that 'Fatlus gone woke' but in the end it would still sell like hotcakes. Persona 6 is going to succeed no matter what, because it's persona. I would be interesting if I could play as a female main character, or if I could have gay dating options, but will Persona 6 have them? I mean, probably not. But it's nice to dream.

i dont think (i could be wrong) Japan has the language structure for them to be able to feature that for their own players and i doubt theyd do something so specialised for localisation

I’m split 50/50 on waiting a female or a possible continuation of (spoilers for persona 3) saving makoto from the great seal. For the past couple years it’s been a possible theory with Elizabeth being the protagonist because she gained the power of the wild card in arena ultimax. With that possibility there could be a female protagonist there as well so I’m all open to it. I’ve never played persona 2 and want too because of all the positive things I’ve heard about it through the hardcore fans. So o believe it’s indeed possible to write a complex female protagonist that transcends even normal themes or memoirs of today. Finally for anyone who’s a jojo fan one of my favorite parts is stone ocean (the only jojo part where there is a fella protagonist that being jolyne with her being in my top 3 for joestar protagonist)
I would not be comfy with playing as a female protag. Maybe if there was a option to choose which one then I would be chill with it but I would not like it if it was otherwise

@@ACursedJessie Yea but I think the majority of the personas fanbase is male so i think to make the majority happy would be of the utmost importance from atlus. I wouldn't mind if there was a option to choose either a male or female so that the girls also feel included but I wouldn't like it if the main protag was a girl because i just wouldn't feel a connection to the protag
in japan (which is the fanbase they care most about pleasing) its like 60/40 male to females who play these games, its pretty evenly split

I know that they always plan to have dual protagonists but they always scrap the FeMC's due to it "not being worth it". I really hope the backlash they got from Kotone being cut in Reload makes them see that we want more female protags in future entries.
It worked in P3 Portable so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it worked in P6
The difference is that Femc was built on an already finished game, while they would have to make both routes from the ground up in P6. And P3 is probably shorter than P6 will be as well.
So I would be happy about a female protagonist. It was nice to see a Persona game have a solo protagonist. Because that made Atlus a female protagonist. Accept into their ranks. but now I'm wondering something. namely that the latest rumor says that Persona 6 should have two male protagonists. That in turn would mean. That both protagonists have to have different social leftisms for there to be any difference between the two. Because you hear from those responsible. The fact that money and time are not enough for a female protagonist. But for two male protagonists there is definitely enough money and time. off and yes, I know. It's just a rumor, but what if. That this rumor could be true in the end.

How should I word it...I do think it would be cool if the story makes a lot of sense if the protagonist if female that a male protagonist wouldn't work. Not like it's all about how she's a girl, it needs to constantly remind us she is one.
I play a lot of Otome Visual Novel. Arguably, some of them could pass off as a Boys Love Game, I think the one that wouldn't work would be Cupid Parasite and Olympia Soiree.
Long story summary of Cupid Parasite.
You play as Cupid, who is tired of using her arrows to make people fall in love. Her father Zeus forces her to do it because he thinks humans are incapable of falling in love by themself.
To prove her dad wrong, she disguised herself as a matchmaker of a very successful company. Years go by, and she's doing a pretty good job, but she wants to do more stuff.
She asks her CEO, and he assigns her with a difficult task. There are 5 guys who are impossible to matchmake. They constantly ended up chasing any potential partners due to their weird quirks.
If she can even get one guy to find a potential partner, she'll have the promotion.
And each guy actually makes better flow for a female Cupid.
Ex: One of the guys is actually her former roommate. Due to a mix up, he initially thought he was rooming with a guy, but to his shock, she's a pretty girl. He only has a crush on her. He never asked her out because he saw she was very career focus. He tries to get over his crush, but every time he tries to on blind dates, he keeps talking about what he would like to do as her boyfriend.
Another guy is a grandson of a famous fashion designer, and his grandma wants him to get married soon, but he is constantly rejecting girls because they don't meet his standards.
Olympia Soiree summary. Basically she's the last of her kind of a sacred hair color and she needs to get a husband before she has marry the guy who's in charge of her. He doesn't want to make her marry him if she's uncomfortable, so he gives her a year to find a guy she actually likes. Any guy she bangs won't be mixed due to how dominant her genes are. (Though Mpreg could be a thing lol)
I would prefer a choice, but a new FeMC similar to Maya could be interesting too. However, since the protag would likely be as silent as the rest building an actual character could prove difficult, and with how much of a superstar a Persona protagonist inevitably ends up being accusations of Mary Suedom would be rampant. I attempted writing my own Fem protag for a Persona story as a challenge but it was very difficult to keep her character balanced while all the Social Links are opening up to her. I tried to accommodate this by creating a rival/bully character who constantly tries to tear the protag down and make her life hell but I feel like results were mixed and never finished it.
As long as Atlus doesn't make her a tiktok girl, I don't mind

leaks say that it's going to have two main characters so probably optional like p3 portable. that being said. I just want the game to be good because as much as 5 was milked the only good part about it was the final semester.
It does make me laugh that there are people who don't even have the patience to sit through a _4 minute video_ before deciding they know every point you're going to say.
I think it'd be wise decision to allow for a main FemC if making two genders is _"tooo harrrrdddd"_ for the devs at Atlus (nevermind that smaller game companies have been doing this long before P5), as it'd be a great jumping off point to explore philosophical and societal topics from a different perspective.
Personally, I'd prefer it if we could have both. Y'know. Like has already been shown to be possible, both by Atlus and countless other companies in the past?
That way we could see the differences in how characters treat the MC and the FemC, and how that shapes them as people. I think that point seems to be lacking for a lot of the people who cry that FemCs are pointless and add nothing to the story.
Edit: Now, secretly, what I _really_ want is for a fluid protag who can present however they feel fit to allow for literally _any player_ to be able to identify with them... But I can already hear the incoherent screeching over the hills.

The thing is They've already done it plenty of times no one just pays attention. Persona 1 is all about an evil corperation and Maki is heavily involved everywhere in the plot and she's playable, Persona 2 the plot heavily involves Maya and she's playable, P3 has a male and female lead, P4 / P5 are the outliers

i 100% agree that the next protag should be femme, without a doubt (i would also personally want a nonbinary protag cuz bias but its not gonna ever happen) but imo i think its a little dismissive to say that boys are "bland" in comparison to girls.
i definitely do think it would be a lot more interesting to explore feminine issues in P6 - we need that break of the status quo to shake things up and give more representation to feminine struggles in japan and around the world - but i think for a story after P6 there's a lot to be said about the universal human experience for people of every gender, and to an extent the male experience (OUTSIDE of gross antifeminist chud bullshit) that we don't talk about a lot. my ideal P7 has an option between a male and female protag that explores different aspects of the same story from those different lenses (perhaps displaying the irl male social advantage?)
again though, save a male protag option for P7 or beyond. give us P6 FeMC or i riot

While I do agree it could be interesting I don’t think its worth it, the Main demographic of persona games to my knowledge is teenage to young adult males. Not saying there isn’t a large female audience just that it’s smaller than the main demographic that they can easily target. From a writing perspective it could definitely work and be a good game but from a profitability perspective boys are going to relate to male characters more and be more willing to play a game with a male protagonist especially in such a story driven game

im a huge fan of the series i own hundreds of dollars of merch and i have purchased the games for myself and others, i dont have an issue with playing as a guy what i do think is that having a female protag or the option for a female protag would allow for more exploration of things that only women would be able to experience the japanese persona fanbase is between like 70% male and 30% female if polls and such are to be taken as fact.
the points i make in the video are my arguments for a new femc, we have seen 5 male protags and what more depth can you get that hasnt already been explored, femc exclusively would open up the games narrative and story tenfold with new ideas and concepts as mentioned in the section where i talk about a theoretical p5 femc.
in short i dont have a problem playing as a guy i think that playing as a girl would be new and interesting

I wouldn't have any issues if they repeat the p3p model where you could play as a female protagonist but it's probably not happening again since the game industry seems to be doing games entirely for money sake and making an alternative narrative for a female protagonist would cost a lot more in development, so whatever sex is the next persona mc that would be the only one most likely, wich by target demographic persona games tend to appeal to is like 99% going to be a male character.
If you would really like to see a female protagonist and how japanese society norms affect her im pretty sure there is a game like that somewhere and i hope you can find it and enjoy it and even maybe someone in the comments could recommend something like that.
