    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 3 года назад +13

      The funny thing is they clearly had to use context clues. None of the two Wuzzles were given the correct name and left to assume that those who get the reference to fill in the blanks. It made me wonder if Disney wholly owned the license in the first place and had to share it with Hasbro, the toy company that made the toys. Especially since after the single season show, the toy line continued for a year or so. Not to mention the disconnect of the marketing between the Care Bears-esque toy line and the far zanier and goofier Disney cartoon series. Or maybe Disney just doesn't want anyone to remember it existed and they put the writers on a short leash and said writers had to twist their arms, like the Rescue Rangers cameo.

This episode was so damn cool and I dug Kit Cloudkicker & the aspect of an aviation focus that it got me to rewatch Talespin on Disney+. I am so amazed how much Talespin holds up as a series still. This episide simultaneously made me jump for joy while my heart broke. The deeper they go into this universe they have created makes it more of a crime that it has to end so soon. The universe here is so expansive it could go on for a long time but its not being allowed to. It just sucks big time. I know its not the creators fault so I'm not mad at them but sheesh it makes me want to know how much money I'd have to make so I could self fund its continuation.

      I know, but the problem comes that if it is stretched our si much it can turn into a Disaster. Like what happened to two certain shows in Nick that were more a zombie like thing being there to fill time and getting rating, and it turned out ti do the opposite.
      Angones was aware that if they got green light for two more seasons, after the first finale's, then they wouldn't go beyond a fourth one in animation media. (Along with many other projects on the way).

      @@StrikerRazor Don't get me wrong. I am not arguing for endless seasons of Ducktales. In fact I'd be A-OK with this series being over as long as it turned into spinoffs of the other shows in this universe. There could be 10 seasons of this universe (but not the same show) easy without running it into the ground. That's not what's happening at all here. What is happening is a ton of creative potential being chucked in the garbage by corporate.

      And most of that expanded info has been released in comics actually.
      Unfortunately, the corporative decisions are always to keep a channel's variety opened for new content.
      As far as I know, fans are actually telling this concern to Angones to at least create DuckTales film as a last farewell for the fans. Apparently, he might take those comments and work in something due the fans reception.

      @@StrikerRazor Corporate did not have to end this. All they had to do was transfer this over to Disney+ and keep going. But they won't crap or get off the pot. Linear channels are a dinosaur and the meteor has already hit but they refuse to let the needed ice age happen (Warnermedia and other compamies need to do the same as well). If you are going to run a streaming service it's time to end channel operations which cause shows to end way before their time, or allow others to go on way too long.
      I pay Disney $$$ for shows like Ducktales to continue because it is the kind of content I want to consume. If I didn't have one and a half years left on the 3 years of Disney+ that I bought at launch I'd be canceling over this decision they have made.
      Frank Argones and his team are responsible for the single best thing Disney has ever released in my lifetime. This expanded Disney Afternoon Universe deserves to be a content franchise and the plug is being yanked. I'm going to be displeased for a long time and Disney will have to do without my expendable income.

    When Dewey saw the add for Higher for Hire and decided "cloud kicking" was the just thing for him, it reminded me of the character Mr. Toad from "the wind and Willows" who also thought he was amazing at stuff he never tried before as well usually resulting with him getting in trouble. I gotta be honest, when I first saw this episode, I had very mixed feelings about it. It just felt very mean-spirited having Kit not be an ace like his Papa Bear. But as I rewatched it, I realized, the episode was actually quite brilliant. Kit's cloudkicking is completely unique to him, Baloo could never do it and if the likes of Dewey, Molly, Della or Launchpad tried it, it'd probably end in disaster. (Especially if Della tried it given her impatience and temper) But because it came so easily to him, he saw it as mundane and not something worth holding onto despite how much he loved it. This episode also shows that not only can you not literally become the person you idolize, sometimes it's a good idea to step back and see if your hero has flaws, lest you adopt those flaws yourself. Baloo was an incomparable pilot, but a terrible businessman, something that was reflected here in Kit. There's nothing wrong with admiring parental figures, but if you put them up on pedestals, trying to live up to the expectations you have for them is nigh impossible. It'd be like if Dewey continued to worship Della or if Webby continued to worship Scrooge; the former could end up losing a limb and the latter could end up with more archenemies than she could count. And like you said, thanks to Molly, Kit now has a chance to turn his life around, doing what he loves as himself, not as a second Baloo.

      I have a friend that took a while to find the episode approach brilliant, due to be a so hardcore Kit fan blinding his judgement.
      There's something I realized about this, and it was from where they took basis for this episode's plot for this approach to Kit. And that came from Stormy Weather's episode from the Original TaleSpin series, precisely from a line mentioned by Rebecca when Kit began to get si excited and practically worshipping Daring Dan.

    I really loved the bittersweet way they handled Kitt. Baloo was his father figure, if not outright adopted father, and thus a role model. He desperately wants to be Baloo, he tries to have his personality, but falls short and comes off sort of a sheepish version of that. He wanted to fly to be like his father figure and he wasn't good at it. Baloo also used the crowbar trick quite a number of times, so Kitt clearly learned it from him. And in a way, it was kind of depressing to see him not live up to his hero, yet trying to be a hero figure to Dewey the entire episode. The thing that really sold the episode for me is the ending. Molly, being her mother's daughter, buys the Sea Duck, but instead of spending a series kind of holding it over his head, she invites him to join her in her flying circus doing the thing he loves. And while not a long enough appearance, the difference is Rebecca Cunningham is actually quite similar to how Kitt is portrayed here (probably being the mother figure). She barely succeeds in all her business ventures and never quite has everything together, where as Molly looks very successful and has more confidence.
    Also, Baloo's last name is given as VonBruenwald (sp?). If nothing proves that the showrunners and writers know their stuff, that's a DEEP DIVE! They only mentioned it in one episode where Baloo somehow gets an inheritance of a cursed castle (or mansion, I forget the exact details) and the two caretakers are constantly trying to kill him so everything will be left to them.

      I'm glad they had a good balance and didn't make the character too sad or too much of a loser. They kept kid just sure of himself but with enough doubt, and the speech he gave about how he was expected to take on Baloo's role made without making it blatantly obvious sold the entire character arc. I'd also like to mention that his voice actor is Adam Palley, and it would have been a reunion between him and Ben Schwartz from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, except their respective characters didn't actually share a scene or interact in anyway in that movie.

      Perfecto analysis and I realized that myself, due to being in a similar situation myself due to the pandemic.
      Actuslly they took on Kit was taken from the Stormy Weather episode, in which Rebecca mentioning that Kit could have a future beyond hauling cargo. Not to mention Kit in the episode showed he was more of an air stunt performer and being more natural for that.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 3 года назад +4

      I'd get the feeling there's a depressing angle that Baloo and Rebecca gave Kitt Higher for Hire because they were afraid that he wouldn't be able to find work as a pilot on his own. It's left up to interpretation if Rebecca and Baloo are just retired or dead.

    • @dergutehut3961

      @@mightyfilm I think its very likely that they are dead in that version...or even worse...married.
      The point is...the Baloo I always imagined based on the show is very unlikely to retire because unlike kid..he just loves piloting...and I think you can fly as long as most of your senses work...so you can technically be a pilot until a very old age. -So there is no chance that Baloo left his beloved sea-goose (or whatever it is called in the original) especially if he can't be sure that it is handled by a ace pilot. So...why wouldn't he be at least kids Co-Pilot to make sure he and the plane don't get hurt? The only two reasons I can think of is that he is dead, or got lost somewhere, or he married (maybe Becky...maybe someone else) and is kept from still flying a plane.

    I love how this episodes figures out how 'Talespin' connects to 'DuckTales'. (Which is probably how I would imagine how the original 'DuckTales', and Talespin' would be connected.) Having Kit take over Baloo's position as a pilot in the 'DuckTales' timeline makes sense for both versions. I also love how they remained 'The Land Of Wuz', and it's ties to The Stone Of What Was. Also, Dewey's arc illustrates how he's wants to be at the goal, but soon realize he has to work hard to achieve that goal. (In other words, he has to go through a 'heroes' journey' in order to become 'special'. I saw a post the other day quoting einstein about how everyone is a genius in different ways and asking what your genius was, and well I think that fits this episode perfectly. it's amazing to see a character find their genius after so long searching for it, and while it's not as showboaty as he wanted/expected, I feel it fits him perfectly. i can imagine him growing into the steadiest pilot out there easily.

    Things I loved in this episode:
    The concept of Kit being a terrible pilot but unable to admit it to himself was actually an on-going story thread in Talespin and caused him to get into all kinds of jackassery. So this episode actually delivers real character growth that Talespin never got a chance to.
    Molly's stunt pilot name, Danger Woman, is a callback to her favorite radio show as a child. That made me smile.
    The bathroom on the Sea Duck is labeled "The Woods". Just gonna leave that there.
    Aging-up Kit and Molly helps reconcile the problem of Talespin being obviously set in the past of this shared universe. Sure, it wasn't the 1940s, but still. Also, having Kit and Della meet in flight school is a perfect way to tie both verses together.
    The Stone of What WUZZ. The image on the stone is of Bumblelion, and we see Kong Skull Island versions Rhinokey and Butterbear. If they hadn't made the Rhinokey purple, I would've never gotten that.

    I was kind of on the fence with Kit's portrayal at first. But as the episode went along and after thinking about it for some time, I came to appreciate it more. What really sold me about this episode was Dewey's arc and how he understood the bigger picture, which also tied in pretty well with Kit's development. Plus, it's cool having Don Karnage return to finally have an on-screen encounter with Kit and the Sea Duck, seeing Molly practically become her idol from the original show and taking after her mom in some ways, and of course hearing the "Talespin" theme music.
    Also, I love how the handled the Wuzzles by using that magic stone to combine different animals together. It's a really creative way to integrate it into a Ducktales and/or Talespin adventure. It makes me want to draw the other Wuzzles in this style.

    Honestly, I was a little disappointed in how Kit turned out. I like that Della knew him already but not too crazy about him growing up to be a bit of a screw up. I feel like they could have made him everything we would have liked to have seen, make him a badass ace pilot, but give him moments of goofiness, and instead of Della and the boys just stumbling on him, just have Della already know him, make him an old friend, maybe someone she was a bit competitive with. He would still be in a position to inspire Dewy but the issue would be that Kit had to work hard to get to where he is, like he crashed a million times before he got it right.
    Also Given that Kit and Molly have aged but Don Karnage seems actually younger than his original version, I have a theory that they are not the same character, but rather that the new series Don Karnage is the son of the original. It would explain a lot, not only his age but also how different he acts, almost like Karnage Jr originally wanted to be in musical theater but Karnage senior wanted him to follow in his footsteps as a pirate, so in the end he combined the two.

    Was not a fan of how Kit was portrayed in the reboot, especially seeing how his goal in the original series was to be an ace pilot like his mentor. Before meeting Baloo, Kit always dreamed of owning his own plane and flying. This one of the reason he enjoyed cloud kicking because he dreamed of flying someday.
    Moreover, he seemed to be a shell of his former self we knew from the classic series. As a kid, Kit showed great navigational skills and knowledge of aviation. As Baloo's sidekick he more the level headed of the two.
    I really didn't quite understand how he was downplayed in this reboot just to be outshined by Molly, especially since he was one of the most popular characters of the original series. They really didn;t do him any justice by retiring him to be circus performer, which is something Kit in the original series looked down upon doing after being forced to do dangerous stunts by a shady circus owner.
    It was like the people who wrote this episode didn;t bother to watch the original series.

    Take for example when he encountered Dewey and Kit on the Seaduck for the first time, yes he does dramatically announce himself like Black Heron did in The First Adventure but A. he sent his crew ahead to secure the statue and B. he has a dozen planes to get the stone off the island. I have to say as someone who grew up on the original Disney afternoon lineup this episode felt EXTREMELY satisfying. I wasn’t the biggest Talespin fan but I did enjoy and remember the show. While it wasn’t episodic or have much in the way of serial archs, like most shows back then it never had a real series finale. Like ducktales , it just ended after a random episode. Kids show back then rarely left you with a sense of closure.
    This episode works so well as an epilogue to talespin. Yes there are considerable differences (don karnage wrong age) but enough is there to feel right. And it’s so satisfying to feel closure for a series that essentially was left open for 20 years.
    Also I really appreciate how the adult kit and molly feel like a mix of their childhood selves with a little bit of their respective parents (adoptive in baloo case). The writers definitely feel like fans or at least studied on the characterization of the original series

    I liked the overall episode and especially what it did for Dewey, but I'll admit I was underwhelmed by Kit's characterization. So far DuckTales has done a great job of reimagining all the old characters but keeping the core of who that character was. It didn't seem like that held true for Kit. He felt more like Launchpad crossed with Baloo rather than Kit being grown up. I also think the message would have sold better if they hadn't made him a bad pilot. Kit was a decent pilot and exceptional navigator, as well as being the responsible and hardworking balance to Baloo's "bare necessities" laid back attitude. This version of Kit didn't feel like there was much of the original Kit still left intact, and that disappointed me a bit since I love Kit in the original.

Louie still needs to learn to care about people, stop scamming and embrace his family too. I'm glad Mama Cabrera shut his fake charity down. It was an unbelievably despicable tactic of his.

  • @thetux459
    @thetux459 3 года назад +3

    TLDR: I think they mishandled Kit and missed out on a more interesting and unique story and lesson.
    I have issues with Kit being a bad pilot, when in just the Tailspin pilot 4-parter he is shown to geek out over planes and have as much natural affinity for flight as Dewey has. Baloo points out hoe impressed he is with Kit's ability to keep steady in his first try. Also, kid Kit was demonstrated to have more business sense the Baloo or adult Kit. Lastly, how did it happen that Rebecca ended up passing Higher for Higher to Kit rather than Molly anyway, especially if Molly grew into an Ace while at the same time Kit lost competency at everything bit cloudkicking. I think they wanted to have q direct parallel with Dewey trying and failing at cloudkicking, but to do so they had to make some sort of weird mish-mash of Baloo, Kit, and someone who can't fly well.
    I think a much more interesting plot was wasted. They could have instead had kit be a good pilot, but find it unfulfilling. Make it about facing the fact that sometimes achieving one's dreams doesn't make you happy itself. Make it where Dewey instead has to convince Kit to go back to cloudkicking, which Kit had given up due to it being perceived as childish (if not effeminate) by his classmates at flight school. That would work well given that Dewey has a thing for dancing and the episode already had that line about Kid Cloudprancer. The idea that you HAVE to pursue something just because you are gifted in it, even if you don't like it, isn't the best when it isn't qualified.

    • @dragomango992
      @dragomango992 3 года назад +1

      I agree with your main points here about them mishandling Kit. I think the message is blurry, too.
      My issue with the message is, for me, it felt like Kit was saying that he gave up something he loved (cloud-kicking) to be something he thought he loved and wanted to be (piloting). But piloting is a career, and cloud-kicking might as well be something like skateboarding; aka, a hobby. It seems to me that him having a sidekick would have solved his issue of wanting to be able to cloud-kick more while also carrying on Baloo's legacy as an ace pilot.
      I get that they wanted to convey this message of "Stick to what you love and not what you think you have to be" but Kit's character in the original Talespin LOVED piloting and seeing Baloo in action. So, to completely do a 180 on his original character and ignore his clear love and passion for piloting for, what I felt, was a forced moral message is just odd. The message is good but it's conveyed through the wrong character in my opinion.

    It's good that they were able to finally settle on what and who Dewey would become. Huey and Louie were being set up to replace Scrooge and Donald right from the beginning with Huey being obsessed with making a quick buck while Louie leaned more towards safety and tinkering that Donald has displayed. There was a lot of leaning on Webby to sort of step in as the next Della when she first reappeared but has since started to strike out on her own and become a new role in the dynamic. It's nice that the boys are finally settling in to take up the mantles of the three older Duck family members.

    My biggest problem was a bit of unintentional aesop of "stop trying to do what you are passionate about, cause you will suck at it". Also, that Kit ended being "terrible", not average, "terrible" pilot and felt he needed to "meet expectations", which was more about who Dewey was than Kit. You could still worked into Dewey's lesson if you focused on Kit trying to maintain Higher for Hire, his original home with no one left but him. You know, and get the "dont try to make out if yourself what you aren't" aesop, which is Dewey's whole arc.

      Oh yeah it's more of that whole concept of "expectations are teh evul" that's infested our society lately

      @@steakdriven well, that IS a common problem from the "American Dream" style childhood people in North America have been getting where everything that should've been good yet somehow wasn't.
      I don't mind it as a concept, but I'd rather have my version instead.

      The lesson is cultivate what you’re good at, which is sound advice. You can always goof off or do things you enjoy but often what you’re passionate about isn’t everything.

      @@FreyaEinde Except:
      1. "what you're good at" and "what you are passionate" aren't necessarily separate things. If you can't even do the basics (like flying a plane without a help of a crowbar), can you really say you were "passionate" in the first place? People are always choosing between the two, and if you take your passion seriously, then no, they will NOT "goof off".
      2. That point becomes moot when the episode treats Kit's interest of flying as something tacked on to him due to expectations, and never something he inherently was interested at. I would agree with your assessment with maybe making a lesson about "try focusing on what you are good at, not just what you are passionate about", but the writers didn't. All they did was have him say "They wanted me to be a pilot, and I really suck at it", which shouldn't have been a thing because Kit WAS passionate about flying.
