      It could’ve worked though if we would’ve gotten the gorls’ feelings on having not only a brother, but being half-siblings to a biological child. Exploring the concept of how adopted siblings would view their half-siblings would’ve at least salvaged it, but I think that’s too smart or interesting for this film to do and I have a bad feeling they hardly focus on it.

    I love how right after people saying that Illumination "redeemed themselves" after making The Super Mario Bros. Movie for being a somewhat decent videogame movie (mostly because Nintento were breathing down their necks) they released the *SIXTH* Despicable Me/Minions and they were like "Oh yeah this is the animation studio that ruined animated movies worse than DreamWorks."
    It's the reason why I can't bring myself to hate "modern Disney and Pixar" because at least their animated movies feel like they're trying a bit more than Illumination just making "animated kids movies"... or "cinematic babysitters" as Doug says.

  • @ascenciopictures
    @ascenciopictures 3 дня назад +71

    My biggest issue with the film is that it has artificial stakes. It claims that Gru and his family are in danger, but you never see them be in danger. For example, the scene in the grocery store. The trailer made me think a supervillain was attacking Lucy and the girls, but no. It was just a random woman who had beef with Lucy. The villain that claims to be on the hunt for Gru is barely seen being on the hunt for Gru; all you get is hilarious evil antics while he flies around. Also, the film sets up plotlines that go nowhere like Margo (who's barely in the movie), struggling with moving to a new school, and Agnes not wanting to use her fake name.
    What I did like was the Mega Minions and the bond that forms with Gru and the neighbor's daughter (a little bit). Also Agnes. I love Agnes.

    An interesting take for the next Despicable Me movie (which the director will most likely never consider) is to do a time skip for the girls grow up. Maybe Margo starting her freshman year, Edith starting 7th grade, and Agnes starting 5th grade. The movie could be about Gru and Lucy struggling to balance out their job while helping out the girls with school work and raising Gru Jr. There could be a boy that falls in love with Margo, the boy’s parent (or parents) could be a villain,& the final battle taking place at high school prom.

    • @kmmk5022
      @kmmk5022 2 дня назад +4

      That would be interesting. I had a similar idea.
      My idea for a next movie would be a movie that would take place a few years after the fourth movie and it focuses more on the girls and Gru Jr. Fleshing the four out more as characters.
      Maybe the villain for the movie captures Gru and Lucy, and it’s up to the four of them to rescue them. It would be a good opportunity to get some action scenes with the four of them and really highlight their sibling dynamics.
      I’ve also had this idea of Margo getting a love interest but I also had an idea of maybe Edith getting her first crush as well. I know she was grossed out with romance in the second movie but maybe we could maybe have Edith slowly mature and start to view romance as not as gross as she thought before. Though if Edith were to have a love interest, how would you vision them? Personality, gender, appearance?

    The minion franchise is the Defenition of missed potential and execution
    Edit: I think people missed what I meant, but to be honest I don't blame them, I've should've said this in more details than justa lame ass comment, What I meant was that the minion franchise could have been good, and yes, the first movie could've had some changes but it could've worked otherwise, and the first movie isn't bad, it's actually pretty good, but the rest of the franchise was badly executed, they went too hard on the, stupid and dim-witted humour, boring and platitudinious storytelling, and the stupid ass minions guapaligoo! Were quirky and we love bananas sthick that the idea and potential of the movies went down the drain, I can imagine minions as more cartoony and slapsticky and weird, since they speak in a frenchish mixed with english and spanish and a bit gibberish, and are all different in appearence, height and the number of eyes, and in the first movie were more for a side gag and slapstick moments than to be the focus of the movies, I thought if they'd sticked around with the inital intention it could create a more tolerable version of the minions, plus the first movie had heart and a soul, the rest has nothing, no heart or soul, and nothing good what so ever, except for el macho, if the movies were more like a dreamworks/warner brothers film and everything above, and less babyish brain rot content it could've had been great, but the money talked louder and now this is what we got!

    I don't care if the movie is "just a kid's movie". I just want the movie to have something to relate to, something that a lot of Illumination's animated movies are missing (except for "Despicable Me" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie"). They need to just let the writers write and stop playing it safe (even though that might go beyond their budget). Sometimes Illumination is just doing it for Universal. However, in my opinion, even the bad movies can be enjoyable if you choose to enjoy these poorly made movies. (I even enjoyed "Sing 2") Although, I believe that you're right about having the jokes actually be funny. I sure hope that Illumination stops this creativity-limiting budgeting with their movies, but I do understand why they're still doing it since Universal owns them. Although, I respect everyone's opinions (even yours).

      And as some fun side plots, maybe have Margo have another love interest. Though it’s already been done in the second movie but why not? Maybe she has trust issues due to what happiness with Antonio and is a lot more hesitant with her new crush and having to learn how to trust. I feel like trust is something she tends to struggle with.

Something that I wanted to see in a Despicable Me sequel is all the previous villains coming together to get revenge on Gru. That would of made for better idea for a sequel.
    Also SPOILER. Vector appealing did somehow made it back to Earth sometimes after the Mooned Short and also why it is that Scarlet and Herb clearly show that they've aged while the Vicious 6 seems to haven't age a day?

    in a recent interview they reveal that the reason why the girls don't grow up is because they took simpson logic and they are frozen in time. My guess that the reason on why this entire franchise exist is because they want to be something closer to old school cartoons like looney tunes or tom and jerry where is nothing but gags and not trying to fall into the disney trap, but the reason why those cartoons still holod up is that they have an edge no other modern cartoon can top, even if is for adults like rick and morty. So something like the minions getting hurt won't literally and figurative have the same longing impact as tom getting hurt.

      If they were to make another film, I hope the fifth movie focuses more on the girls.
      To me, the girls are a major part of despicable me. Not just the minions and Gru. The three are just as major as them. Though with Lucy and the baby added in and with all the minion antics, we don’t really get too much of the girls even though in the original movie, they played a big role.
      Maybe for another movie, it can take place a few years after the fourth movie, maybe it could focus a lot more on Margo, Edith, Anges and Gru Junior and explore their sibling dynamic more
      Maybe Gru and Lucy get captured by the villain of the movie and the four have to go on a mission to rescue their parents
      Though another thing we could do is maybe have Edith have her first crush. I know she gets grossed out with romance based on the sequel, but what if she slowly grows out of the whole cooties stage and eventually starts to develop feelings for someone and having to be vulnerable. Though if that were to happen, what would a love interest for her be like? Personality, appearance, gender?

    As someone who enjoyed the previous three Despicable Me movies, this one was just the worst. Even my mom, who loves these movies, didn't enjoy this one.
    Sometimes, there's a laugh here and there, and the layout is pretty good, but the writing is a mess. There's like 8 storylines, and some of them are not even finished, a lot of the story is miss potential, and there were too many characters, they could've cut some of them.
    Also, this is a nick pick, but it tries too hard to be like the first two movies. It has the same font of credits, it's shot in 1.85 instead of 2.35 like in DM3 and Minions 2, they even make a call back joke of Ramsbottom with the Minions.
    Even the new villain sucks, I was constatley reminding him as the alien croackoch of MIB, and how they defeat him is lame. Like (SPOILERS): Vector was traped in the moon, El Macho was electrucated by Lucy's lipstick taser, Balthazar Bratt is blowed away by his own keytar, and this guy is just punched by Gru and then falls in the building. LAME.
    Despicable Me 3 has it's issues, there were too many subplots, but at least they tried to developt those plots and give it a conclusion. And even if it's a bit less funny than 1 and 2, I still laughed watching. There was rarely a joke in Despicable Me 4 that made me giggle or laugh a bit, but there were no jokes that made me laugh out loud.
    I can see myself rewatching the first three movies and even Minions: Rise of Gru, but I don't see myself re-watching this one ever again.

    You know, I can understand the argument that it’s ok for kids films to be lighter and more comedic because it’s comforting for them, but I also feel that comedic animation needs some sense of passion and craft to it. The Looney Tunes are more sophisticated than most kids stuff even if they lean into mindless slapstick technically, but the reason they have lasted and have both kids and adults laughing is because of the craft of the jokes. It isn’t trying to give a message or heartfelt emotion, it’s just trying to make you laugh. These movies bother me not because of the oversaturation or that they lack ambition, it’s that they lack a sense of purpose or structure to anything other than distracting a kid for an hour and a half. It’s ok to give kids something more entertaining than insightful, but at least be bothered to put some effort into entertaining the kids instead of the bare minimum under the belief that they will just eat it up no matter what you put out.

    This feels like it should've gone directly to streaming. It's not good enough for theaters but would've been perfectly serviceable to watch on Netflix when you've got nothing better to do. Essentially it's what Megamind 2 should've been, which is a perfectly serviceable follow-up that doesn't make you want to bleach your eyes, swish your mouth with full-proof Everclear, and have a full hot coffee colonic after watching it just to get the taste out of your mouth.
