      I was thinking the same. But now I ordered the 12.9 and sell my 11, because the screen is actually a lot bigger. Also one day I plan on getting a keyboard for it, and 12.9" is basically the minimum size for a notebook. What annoys me the most, is that it is quiet hard to draw bigger things and whenever you want to draw anywhere else than the left edges, your hand cant really rest. I was even thinking on building something for it, like a little "put in" frame :D. With such a costy device it was not smart, to try saving money on that end of the spectrum. For someone who still does not want to spend this much, I would rather recommend to buy an older but bigger ipad pro, than an 11" 2020. The 2017 12.9 should be a better pick then :).

    I feel like animation apps would benefit from that extra screen real-estate as you do need to have the timeline and tools visible most of the time. That said I still decided to get 11 inch to sketch on the go, in cafes and on the sofa, screen size feels fine when you actually try it and it's SO much lighter.

      @@ottovonweaboo6355 It's a very personal preference tbh. Animation software would benefit from extra screen real-estate, I think your best bet may be to go to a store and see both models and test them. I wanted something I could draw on on my lap and 12" felt too large for this purpose, my hands are small as well. You may want to see both to compare for your use-case. You can work in programs just fine, but what you need in an iPad may differ from my preference. I just wanted something that would not be heavy with a case on, 11 gives me that.

However, if your work requires full colors &/or @ at least 400 dpi, then I would highly recommend upgrading to the iPad Pro so you could do more layers thanks to the higher RAM of the Pro. I actually just did that & bought the 2020 iPad Pro last week as I have just been tapped to do costumes for a local film & layers would benefit me well when coming up with several designs for each actor :)

    I'll go for the 11 inches. I used to work on a PC and the monitor size was a bit over 20 inches and my eyes were getting lost in that. made my eyes tired of trying to find where I wanted to click on. So I upgraded to a 15.6 inch laptop and it feels nice to have a smaller screen and portable device. so much easier on my eyes. yes, sometimes a bigger display would be helpful if you're constantly zooming in and viewing a smaller part of the work each time until you zoom out to see the larger picture but I would sacrifice that for all the other benefits of a 11'. i also tend to use smaller sketchbooks the most, and portability matters to me. 11 inches seem more comfortable. thanks for the video.
    >>>update: after seeing both models up close at the store, I went for the 11". The 12.9" is way too heavy and takes up so much space, you'll be wondering how to hold it correctly. My hands are slim and on the smaller side, so lifting the 12.9" was not comfortable for me. Wouldn't be a good "on the go" choice either bcs of its size. If you care about portability and comfort the most, go for the 11" you won't regret it. The screen size is perfect for drawing.

    I'm having a lot of inner debates on whether to get the 11' or the 12'9 haha, I intend it for like 50% drawing and 50% video watching/movie streaming, for the latter I think the 11' would be better because I can hold it in a comfortable position and bring it with me in cars easily, but for the drawing I think I'd prefer the extra space, except I don't want to have to put it in the table to draw.. I never draw at a desk anymore. A lot of people strongly recommend the bigger one because the more space the better. But yeah I'm confused 😂😂

      I'd say if you have more cash to burn, get the 12.9. I surely would have bought that if it were only $100 more, but it's $250 more expensive where I'm from & since I came from using a 9.7" iPad anyway, I thought moving to 11" is more than enough already. Objectively, you can't go wrong with either. They're beast machines that can handle a lot of graphic work.

    • @GeekedOutNeckbeard
      @GeekedOutNeckbeard 4 года назад +17

      I would say get the 12.9. The size is already quite small, but it's basically the best size.
      If you hold it vertical and draw it's like paper. Which is awesome.
      You'd think it gets in the way and is hard, but not too big a deal. Since you'll be lugging it around in a bag, more than likely, you will be taking it out when you're just at a cafe or in the park.
      You'll get used to it if you want to draw horizontally.
      Nothing beats the size. And it's easy to carry.
      At least for me, since I've used a Surface Pro. So I am used to the 13' size

    • @SouthPawArtist
      @SouthPawArtist 4 года назад +9

      Makoto Kazuki Agreed. The additional weight is actually tolerable, and I think remarks saying that holding a 12.9 iPad 2018/2020 is like holding a tray is kind of exaggerated. Ironically, its body doesn’t appear to be much of an upsize next to the 11-inch, but when the screens are lit up (particularly on a drawing app workspace like Procreate), the extra space is quite sizeable.

In terms of pursuing animation, iPad Pro 12.6 would be the best choice. I still don't know if I should go with the 11 I do need the portability because I'm a person that enjoys drawing in others places than home. I love drawing looking to the river and in my country there's alot of good stops to chill next to the river, and I also travel alot.
    But I also want to use photoshop and other softwares like adobe animate and clip studio. Do you think the 11 inch is good for that? I'm kinda worried that maybe it's a waste of money to buy the iPad pro to just use procreate. I know iPad air is good for it too. I don't think the difference is that big.
    I'm still so indecisive I want an iPad that will last me years and that I can be a professional with cuz I have a degree in animation and illustration and I want to work hard to be a professional on that area. If you are going to bring your tablet out very often, the 11-inch is probably the better option. Most drawing apps still have UI that's designed quite well to fit on smaller iPads.
      If you often use apps that have lots of UI elements, e.g. Clip Studio, then a larger display with more resolution will be more productive. So you have to research those apps you use and how they present UI.

    I really would like a 12.9” for the extra drawing area. I wouldn’t really be travelling a whole lot with it, so I’m not so concerned about it being cumbersome in any way. However, the one thing that does stand out and concerns me with the 12.9” is the how much more muted the colours look. I don’t have the best eyes so I like having the bright rich colours. It’s the only reason why I won’t get a matte screen cover for my iPad 7. I was wondering if perhaps it’s just because you have a matte cover on your 12.9” iPad, or maybe the colour brightness is something that can be adjusted.

      12.9 is noticeably heavier than the 11 especially if you want to bring it around often. And you will definitely need to set it on a surface to draw. With the 11-inch, you can hold in hand, while standing, to draw. When you add a case, the 12.9 becomes even heavier.

    I'm a professional illustrator, my work flow includes a mobile tablet with Wacom pen, and a laptop so I don't need a laptop replacement hybrid tablet, I need the portability.
    Anyway, realised I could visually compare my current Samsung galaxy Tab (where I don't have a problem with the size) to the iPad specs from the Apple website and then found out it was even smaller than the iPad 11😂, I tried to get a sense of how big 12.9 was and it was so huge that I was wondering why they were still calling it a tablet.
    11" is perfect! The 12.9 is practically a laptop, a 13" one. but somehow has less desirable specs then I'd want in a laptop. If I didn't have my laptop, I might be willing to sacrifice portability for the hybrid of tablet and laptop.

      @@Plyr.1 thanks. I’m still deciding between Air and Pro. But in some other reviews they say ProMotion 120Hz makes not much difference as Procreate optimize the brush response very well. As for RAM, if you draw in screen size, you can still get up to 90+ layers in an old 4GB iPad.
      I’ll need to check in the Apple Store.

    • @donalone
      @donalone 4 года назад +1

      Just tried in a store.
      - RAM affected layer number is way beyond my drawing need. Don’t remember the number but like >30 at least for on screen resolution.
      - I could notice the lag from the refresh rate when I draw fast long lines, feels like the stroke is trying to catch up the brush head on iPad Air. On Pro, the stroke stuck with brush head. But for shorter strokes there is not much difference.
      - Air has a faster single core CPU. I noticed it took less time to load the brush drawer than Pro. But again, hardly noticeable in a split of seconds. There is an animation sample on Procreate which takes some time to load on Pro, but on Air they remove it in Procreate from display model. Maybe they don’t want Air to feel slow. But animation is not needed for me.
      - Air bezel is a bit wider than Pro but unnoticeable, not as big difference as I thought. Thickness is also fine. Not huge difference.
      - Fingerprint reader, works ok and fast. But screen can be turned on by tapping the screen. Just extra step to put your finger there.
      So for the refresh rate, is really the only thing that bothers me a bit for drawing. But considering the price it’s really “noticeable”.

    I’m most likely not going to take my iPad anywhere unless I use it as a laptop, but I’m not sure if I should get the bigger one for laptop purposes and note taking and drawing while having a bigger screen, or the smaller one for more comfort and reading. Which one should I get?

      Look at your current workflow and habits. If you are going to bring out out often, get the 11-inch. It's significantly more portable.

      11 if you need to draw while holding it in hand. 12.9 requires support on table almost all the time because it's heavier. So if you are going to set the tablet down on table to draw most of the time anyway, get the 12.9.

    Hi! The ipad pro 11 also has the laminated screen?? Does the iPad Pro 12.9 feel the same way to draw? Is there any space between the pen and the screen?
