It means she's showing the girl who's boss and that's what makes it so cold. It was enough to give that girl pause.
What I love is by the end of the movie, she realized that her professor wasn’t disapproving of her decision, she was giving her tough love by holding her accountable for missing her obligation to the class. By the movies end she realized that she was blowing an opportunity for a man that wasn’t even going to meet his obligations as a husband. and in a grander scheme of things, she was also learning that you can’t be true as a wife if you’re not even true to yourself first. A lot of people will see the clips and think the movie is about choosing marriage over academia, or vice versa. The truth of the matter is, it’s neither. It’s about discovering your own agency in a time where roles were assigned on the basis of sex rather than chosen on the basis of ambition.
What an extremely apt and intelligent telling of the events of this movie. I wish more people had this level of insight, sadly almost half of our country seems to have fallen off the deep end of the backward type of thinking that has a bright young smart woman behaving like Kristen dunsts character.
I have never seen this movie, but if that's the true assessment, then that is a good assessment of life in general as a woman and the nuisance seemingly missing in this discussion in general. Where if you are going to choose to be a housewife, doesn't mean that you should lose all agency in your life, and having an education and continuing growing as a person shouldn't stop just because you are in a relationship (regardless of gender). If you find that you are losing yourself because you are in a relationship, it's a big sign something is off and you are likely losing your identity to your partner, some of us never had a good sense of identity to begin with. This doesn't mean you can change and evolve, but the feeling of losing yourself often happens through things like someone taking too much of you, being overly critical, and gaslighting. Verses someone who helps you blossom and grow into a better version of yourself will take interest in what you are doing, support you through difficult times (but not enable), and help you feel comfortable with self expression and help with common goals.
That's my job... I always loved that part. Now as a teacher, it's more satisfying lol. Obviously people commenting have never been in a situation with a disrespectful student lol. It's odd people read one sentence and bring so many assumptions about who I am as a teacher, lol, you don't even know my name. So odd. I am however, a great teacher and I build really great relationships with my students because I take time to gain their trust and respect while remaining the authority. That was me with every interaction of Betty Jones’. However, she didn’t turn out too bad in the end of the movie. Highly recommend you give it a watch if you haven’t already. It’s in max.

Their entitlement starts early. Had a student, ( I'm a retired HS teacher ) who did nothing. When zi warned him he'd fail, he told me he didn't come to school to learn...he came to socialize. This was a freshman. After he saw the "F" on his 1st report card, he started paying attention.
This is so wild to me as someone who got married my sophomore year, I still finished out and still studied abroad and still lived on campus… life and marriage is what you make of it, not what society does Now I have graduated and starting my career and continue to grow up together 💕
I agree with the teacher, if you wanted to go to college show up, missing a bit for your wedding is fine but don't come Into the class and expect a pass for it, you missed lots of learning and chances, if you fail it's on you, it's not the job of the teacher to pass you just because you decided to get married. You could have waited for off time. The teacher can give extra credit but they don't HAVE to.
I already pay a fuck load of money for the class and I’m a grown ass adult. If you don’t show up once and yet ace all exams and homework there should be absolutely no qualms about that.

Not remotely accurate about elite women’s colleges in the 1950s. Women took their studies very seriously. Parents did not determine the curriculum. My mom was Wellesley class of ‘54 and she thought this movie was ridiculous.
My mother was the first female and pregnant residents at her hospital. She was the first female doctor with a family at two other hospitals she worked at. My sister married right out of high school, and had 2 kids while attending college. She only missed class to give birth and recover. She also got her master's degree while working, taking care of 3 kids, and dealing with crazy in-laws. Her husband supported her wherever he could. My other sister had a hard time with finding a job where her husband moved for work so she went back for a master's degree. She is now happy in her second career. Being married is no excuse.
That’s exhausting all that burden had to break her back I couldn’t have done it women were not designed to do all that geez. Emotionally I would have been exhausted and she had to be.

Because only the wealthy went to college man or woman. Only 4% of men attended college by 1920. 4%. And women had to marry because all the jobs that existed that made enough money to survive where dangerous jobs that a man had to work to support himself at 18. So we encouraged women to marry up so that she would have a good life and be taken care especially because the life expectancy for men was low. So if a woman's father died at 40 and she had no male relatives that meant she had to try to survive as best as she could as a seamstress or risk her life working a dangerous job. That was also why shaming women for having relations was a lot less taboo. Because if she got pregnant she had to marry whomever got her pregnant. And if she didn't know then her life was even worse. Were there struggles and downsides for women? Of course there were. But for the time it was the best society could offer.

That war is partially the result of greed and power, forcing men to become veterans. which in turn affects society as whole, man, woman, child. If there is a couple in college and they wish to get married, I imagine it’s best to do so during school brakes. Less stressful I’d think and one thing does not interfere with the other.
It’s unfortunate that women back then were pretty comfortable dismissing their place in the world other than to serve others, particularly their husbands. It’s fortunate that we are doing more for us - knowing our value as individuals beyond only being housewives - and that’s IF we are married…

She doesn’t have to serve disrespectful customers, and she can withhold services from abusive clients. She will have HR but it’s debatable whether or not it will work in her favor during this time, and her male coworkers and overseers would be the worst part of the majority of her life… but that’s a social issue and not related to the nature of work. I married at 19 still finished my degree and have had a family I just had my 3rd baby at 31 and decided to take time off. You can do it ladies I know it’s hard I know you want to quit some days and it feels like the world is crushing you. But YOU CAN and YOU WILL persevere ♥️ All of you going through school or whom just choose to be home with a family we’re all the same it’s all hard demanding work neither is better than the other. I love your comment. It’s not an either or. It’s about society as a whole needs both: hard balance. Not everyone can afford for one parent to stay home while only one earns the income. Each couple needs to decide for their own what is best for their family. But choose as a couple. Consciously. Don’t let the capriciousness of one dictate for both partners. It’s a test of the relationship if they both can honestly say that they made the decision together with the well being of the family unit at the helm. Both are equally responsible for the wellbeing of the family: protect, provide, nurture.
Kirsten Dunst has stated in interviews that her character Betty was an only child to a couple that really wanted a boy. It makes the scenes with her mother deeper and more interesting because Betty wants so much to please her parents but never receives unconditional love and support. Having her get married was a socially acceptable way for her parents to finally let go of any responsibility towards their daughter. That’s why Betty is such a snob for most of this movie: she’s trying to please her parents by being “better” than others. She does go through a huge transformation after reality strikes by the end of the movie.
You want to get married, get married. You want to go to school, go to school. You want to do both, do both. Don't commit yourself to something and then neglect your duties and responsibilities because you don’t see the value in them anymore. You get married and don't see the value in school, drop out. You get married and don't want to be anymore because you see no value in it, get divorced. Same goes for doing both. This is on a general scale with all else being equal. I'm not referring to situations of abuse in marriage, situations of not being able to go to school and having to drop out to take care of kids, a family member, falling on hard times and not being able to afford tuition costs, etc. This is the in general ideological notion of the movie.

People say the girls were right.... they were but one would wonder why women want to make a different choice now? Isn't it because their trusts have been broken by their partner who they gave themselves to? Never get engaged in college, especially if your partner is older. In fact, never get romantically involved. I got dumped during band camp and met a senior. My life became about him (I didn’t think it did). I got engaged to him the summer after my sophomore year of college. I was over the moon. I realized that I didn’t really care about college as much as I thought (barely studied or practiced but still managed to graduate with a 3.3 gpa with two majors). We moved in full time together once I graduated and he changed, I guess we both did. We argued and he became a jerk. My family noticed things that I didn’t or I knew but had rose colored glasses on. He dumped me harshly and now I regret ever meeting him. Be you, learn about yourself and don’t put your love for a man in place of your success. I realized that it wasn’t initially love. Even though it became love, it was filling traumatic voids and scars. It was all about control: me on my life and him on me.
Dont regret your very important lessons in life, that you get to share with others, as your experience, strength and hope. You were meant to have that experience- to learn from it. Dont make regret the only thing you got out of it. Change your perspective just a tiny bit and use seemingly bad where appropriate and blessing in disguise where appropriate and be grateful for the experience and the lesson. And let it go. My husband and i got married when he was in the middle of a semester. We literally waited until spring break to go on a honeymoon. Its always why summer is such a popular time to get married. People are wild. You can set up and house and still go to class or work. Lol wut?
I recently watched this movie for the first time, it's such a comfort watch. A simple story with emotional stakes but not too intense. If you're into the unorthodox teacher trope, it's perfect. It's pretty similar to The Dead Poets Society.
This was a fabulous movie. So sad that these silly girls thought being married was all important. The arrogance of this girl was revolting. Thank goodness times and attutudes have changed. Fabulous portrayals.

I’ve had so many teachers like this. Ones that when I asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I answered “ A mother and a wife.” You know the responses I got??? -> “Is that ALL you see for yourself?” -> “Don’t you have any REAL dreams/goals?” -> “Do you think that LOW of yourself?” -> “So you want to be a house SLAVE?” This is what our young girls ACTUALLY hear from teachers -> Don’t get it twisted. Never ONCE did I get “That’s wonderful & you should reach for YOUR GOALS.” That whole “Women should do what THEY WANT” is a line that doesn’t hold up once you choose something outside their money making education scam.

I don't know how it used to be in the past or how it is nowadays in each country... but here in Slovakia if you get married during college you don't miss the school for honey moon. I assume they would allow you to miss the day BEFORE the wedding, so you could finish the preparations (that's the same you get when you have a job, I can't remember if they give you only one day off or two), but everyone plans their honey moon in a way it wouldn't affect anything. My mom who used to be a teacher didn't even have a honey moon (she could during a summer vacation but they were poor and it also wasn't that important to her and dad) and she is still married. It's been 37 years now. Is it everywhere like here? Or you have different experiences/traditions/rules?
As a woman who is both educated and married, I have very mixed feelings about this. I think getting married is just as important as getting an education. It can be one of the most wonderful things when you marry someone who truly loves and respects you. I understand that not every marriage is like that, but you shouldn't assume that every marriage is hell either. I also don't think a woman has chosen a "lower life" just because she chose to get married. On the other hand, I don't think that the simple action of being married makes you somehow superior to someone who is not married. Nor does having a good marriage make you superior to someone whose marriage is struggling. I also do not think that choosing an education means that you're "choosing yourself." I know a lot of women who are educated and are miserable. Married not married. Education no education. These things alone do not give you more or less worth and do not necessarily make you more or less successful. I don't think one option or the other should rule over the life of anyone, female or male. I have never watched this movie. There is probably a lot more to this scene that I do not understand. They are both acting like b*****. From this scene, it does look like the teacher started it, though. If someone has a major event, like a marriage, happen in their life, you can not be so high and mighty because of your personal beliefs or feelings on the situation that you cannot allow them some time to celebrate and in a way settle into this new change in their lives. If the student gave you no notice of what was going to happen, that's one thing. But if they informed you, be happy for them. In this case, there should be an allowance to a certain degree. A marriage changes your life. In this case, a large event happened in the young woman's life. She figured it out and is now back to continue her education after everything was taken care of. Be happy for her and that she has found a way to accomplish two things that mean a lot to her. Encourage her to continue learning and taking that seriously, absolutely. But do not be angry because something like marriage also has been brought into her life
Don't sign up for class you don't plan to attend. Marriage is a plannable moment you can plan it to not be at the same time as the second biggest exam in the class.
She’s at university. The school year doesn’t stop for wedding bells. When you pay for university, you commit to the schedule of your courses. If she couldn’t do both, she should have dropped the class. She could have gotten married & gotten back to class; or waited until one of the breaks to get married. The student missed many classes & major assignments. Why should she deserve special treatment? It’s not like this was an emergency or an unforeseen event. She’s also completely disrespectful.
Are the other students donkeys.. Why should an able bodied woman or man get special treatment.. The certificates in college education is provided for the classes attended and passing the tests... If she doesn't do one part.. She should be passed or failed acc to attendance...most colleges in the world have "attendance requirement"

I just had this conversation with a woman in the gas station the other day. Both me and the cashier agreed that it's the handful of troublesome women who keep women down these days. It's not all women. And it's not really men. Girls are mean. They're mean to eachother. They're mean to themselves. They're mean to their parents (especially their Mothers). They're mean to their family. They're just... mean. And only a handful of bad apples can influence the rest of the bucket. A world of only women would not be a world I wanted. I like my Man. What I love is by the end of the movie, she realized that her professor wasn’t disapproving of her decision, she was giving her tough love by holding her accountable for missing her obligation to the class. By the movies end she realized that she was blowing an opportunity for a man that wasn’t even going to meet his obligations as a husband. and in a grander scheme of things, she was also learning that you can’t be true as a wife if you’re not even true to yourself first. A lot of people will see the clips and think the movie is about choosing marriage over academia, or vice versa. The truth of the matter is, it’s neither. It’s about discovering your own agency in a time where roles were assigned on the basis of sex rather than chosen on the basis of ambition.

What an extremely apt and intelligent telling of the events of this movie. I wish more people had this level of insight, sadly almost half of our country seems to have fallen off the deep end of the backward type of thinking that has a bright young smart woman behaving like Kristen dunsts character.
I have never seen this movie, but if that's the true assessment, then that is a good assessment of life in general as a woman and the nuisance seemingly missing in this discussion in general. Where if you are going to choose to be a housewife, doesn't mean that you should lose all agency in your life, and having an education and continuing growing as a person shouldn't stop just because you are in a relationship (regardless of gender). If you find that you are losing yourself because you are in a relationship, it's a big sign something is off and you are likely losing your identity to your partner, some of us never had a good sense of identity to begin with. This doesn't mean you can change and evolve, but the feeling of losing yourself often happens through things like someone taking too much of you, being overly critical, and gaslighting. Verses someone who helps you blossom and grow into a better version of yourself will take interest in what you are doing, support you through difficult times (but not enable), and help you feel comfortable with self expression and help with common goals.

I agree with the teacher, if you wanted to go to college show up, missing a bit for your wedding is fine but don't come Into the class and expect a pass for it, you missed lots of learning and chances, if you fail it's on you, it's not the job of the teacher to pass you just because you decided to get married. You could have waited for off time. The teacher can give extra credit but they don't HAVE to.

Not remotely accurate about elite women’s colleges in the 1950s. Women took their studies very seriously. Parents did not determine the curriculum. My mom was Wellesley class of ‘54 and she thought this movie was ridiculous.
My mother was the first female and pregnant residents at her hospital. She was the first female doctor with a family at two other hospitals she worked at. My sister married right out of high school, and had 2 kids while attending college. She only missed class to give birth and recover. She also got her master's degree while working, taking care of 3 kids, and dealing with crazy in-laws. Her husband supported her wherever he could. My other sister had a hard time with finding a job where her husband moved for work so she went back for a master's degree. She is now happy in her second career. Being married is no excuse.

Because only the wealthy went to college man or woman. Only 4% of men attended college by 1920. 4%. And women had to marry because all the jobs that existed that made enough money to survive where dangerous jobs that a man had to work to support himself at 18. So we encouraged women to marry up so that she would have a good life and be taken care especially because the life expectancy for men was low. So if a woman's father died at 40 and she had no male relatives that meant she had to try to survive as best as she could as a seamstress or risk her life working a dangerous job. That was also why shaming women for having relations was a lot less taboo. Because if she got pregnant she had to marry whomever got her pregnant. And if she didn't know then her life was even worse.
Were there struggles and downsides for women? Of course there were. But for the time it was the best society could offer.

I mean that displaces both male and female at a huge disadvantage, women weren’t well equipped to take care of themselves, let alone THINK for themselves and men HAD to make life altering sacrifices for money to survive. So we could argue that capitalism in its purest form was used as a means to exploit your average labourer. That war is partially the result of greed and power, forcing men to become veterans. which in turn affects society as whole, man, woman, child.
So let me rephrase, I’m grateful that now I can openly think for myself and have some autonomy in how to plan for my future, I’m not saying that women should not desire to be married, but at least theres a choice on when you should marry, however if I were to be single for the rest of my life, yes there may be repercussions (fear of being alone etc), but at least I can have confidence that my entire identity isn’t wrapped around being a wife… because let’s be real, not everyone should be married because not everyone is ready for the type of commitment/sacrifice marriage entails. Marriage is a gift. Not something that should be treated as a default pre-requisite for survival, not something to be desperate over. However, unfortunately this is still true for some countries.

Each couple needs to decide for their own what is best for their family. But choose as a couple. Consciously. Don’t let the capriciousness of one dictate for both partners. To my understanding in this time, getting married was the real world
Kirsten Dunst has stated in interviews that her character Betty was an only child to a couple that really wanted a boy. It makes the scenes with her mother deeper and more interesting because Betty wants so much to please her parents but never receives unconditional love and support. Having her get married was a socially acceptable way for her parents to finally let go of any responsibility towards their daughter. That’s why Betty is such a snob for most of this movie: she’s trying to please her parents by being “better” than others. She does go through a huge transformation after reality strikes by the end of the movie.
You want to get married, get married. You want to go to school, go to school. You want to do both, do both.
Don't commit yourself to something and then neglect your duties and responsibilities because you don’t see the value in them anymore.
You get married and don't see the value in school, drop out. You get married and don't want to be anymore because you see no value in it, get divorced. Same goes for doing both.
This is on a general scale with all else being equal. I'm not referring to situations of abuse in marriage, situations of not being able to go to school and having to drop out to take care of kids, a family member, falling on hard times and not being able to afford tuition costs, etc.

My life became about him (I didn’t think it did). I got engaged to him the summer after my sophomore year of college. I was over the moon. I realized that I didn’t really care about college as much as I thought (barely studied or practiced but still managed to graduate with a 3.3 gpa with two majors). We moved in full time together once I graduated and he changed, I guess we both did. We argued and he became a jerk. My family noticed things that I didn’t or I knew but had rose colored glasses on. He dumped me harshly and now I regret ever meeting him. Be you, learn about yourself and don’t put your love for a man in place of your success. I realized that it wasn’t initially love. Even though it became love, it was filling traumatic voids and scars. It was all about control: me on my life and him on me.
Dont regret your very important lessons in life, that you get to share with others, as your experience, strength and hope. You were meant to have that experience- to learn from it. Dont make regret the only thing you got out of it. Change your perspective just a tiny bit and use seemingly bad where appropriate and blessing in disguise where appropriate and be grateful for the experience and the lesson. And let it go. (I know, much easier said than done)😊”.

I recently watched this movie for the first time, it's such a comfort watch. A simple story with emotional stakes but not too intense. If you're into the unorthodox teacher trope, it's perfect. It's pretty similar to The Dead Poets Society.
This was a fabulous movie. So sad that these silly girls thought being married was all important. The arrogance of this girl was revolting. Thank goodness times and attutudes have changed. Fabulous portrayals.

I don't know how it used to be in the past or how it is nowadays in each country... but here in Slovakia if you get married during college you don't miss the school for honey moon. I assume they would allow you to miss the day BEFORE the wedding, so you could finish the preparations (that's the same you get when you have a job, I can't remember if they give you only one day off or two), but everyone plans their honey moon in a way it wouldn't affect anything. My mom who used to be a teacher didn't even have a honey moon (she could during a summer vacation but they were poor and it also wasn't that important to her and dad) and she is still married. It's been 37 years now.
Is it everywhere like here? Or you have different experiences/traditions/rules?

As a woman who is both educated and married, I have very mixed feelings about this.
I think getting married is just as important as getting an education. It can be one of the most wonderful things when you marry someone who truly loves and respects you. I understand that not every marriage is like that, but you shouldn't assume that every marriage is hell either.
I also don't think a woman has chosen a "lower life" just because she chose to get married.
On the other hand, I don't think that the simple action of being married makes you somehow superior to someone who is not married. Nor does having a good marriage make you superior to someone whose marriage is struggling.
I also do not think that choosing an education means that you're "choosing yourself." I know a lot of women who are educated and are miserable.
Married not married. Education no education. These things alone do not give you more or less worth and do not necessarily make you more or less successful.
I don't think one option or the other should rule over the life of anyone, female or male.
I have never watched this movie. There is probably a lot more to this scene that I do not understand. They are both acting like b*****. From this scene, it does look like the teacher started it, though. If someone has a major event, like a marriage, happen in their life, you can not be so high and mighty because of your personal beliefs or feelings on the situation that you cannot allow them some time to celebrate and in a way settle into this new change in their lives. If the student gave you no notice of what was going to happen, that's one thing. But if they informed you, be happy for them. In this case, there should be an allowance to a certain degree. A marriage changes your life. In this case, a large event happened in the young woman's life. She figured it out and is now back to continue her education after everything was taken care of. Be happy for her and that she has found a way to accomplish two things that mean a lot to her. Encourage her to continue learning and taking that seriously, absolutely. But do not be angry because something like marriage also has been brought into her life
Don't sign up for class you don't plan to attend. Marriage is a plannable moment you can plan it to not be at the same time as the second biggest exam in the class.

She’s at university. The school year doesn’t stop for wedding bells. When you pay for university, you commit to the schedule of your courses. If she couldn’t do both, she should have dropped the class. She could have gotten married & gotten back to class; or waited until one of the breaks to get married. The student missed many classes & major assignments. Why should she deserve special treatment?
It’s not like this was an emergency or an unforeseen event. She’s also completely disrespectful.
Are the other students donkeys.. Why should an able bodied woman or man get special treatment.. The certificates in college education is provided for the classes attended and passing the tests... If she doesn't do one part.. She should be passed or failed acc to attendance...most colleges in the world have "attendance requirement"

You shouldn’t be held to different standards bc you CHOSE to get married at an inconvenient time for you, that’s not fair to the other students who actually wrote the paper and did the midterm and were there for class. I agree there should be exceptions for ppl struggling w smth (like loss of a loved one, an injury, etc) but when it’s your CHOICE, that’s YOUR PROBLEM

This was a great movie. It was showing how back then the women only went to college to meet their future husbands. It didn’t matter if they learned anything or not.
