To be fair, it took 'em a fair part of the movie to get to this point of truthfulness. This movie should of been appalling - the concept was maudlin at best and just begging to be abused - but the performances of everyone but particularly it's two leading ladies not only saved it every time, but destroyed me when I ultimately saw it after years of avoidance. Bring many tissues - even more than for 'Steel Magnolias'

The thing is this is the way it should be with mothers and stepmothers and fathers and stepfathers. It's not about them. It's not about the divorce it's not about the arguments, it's about the kids. But so often the parents use the kids as ammunition against each other and that's just wrong! Kids aren't weapons they're blessings!

😢 it was one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. Maybe bc my husband of 21 yrs left me for a younger woman that has done irreparable damage to me, my kids, and any kind of relationship with their dad. She got pregnant before our divorce was even final. She won't allow him to communicate with me. The worst part is when they're talking about the wedding, and rubbing it in how she will be at the woman who raised her's daughter wedding, getting her ready and talking about HER FEARS. The sad thing is that the real mother, the one who raised her, dried her tears, kissed her owies , rocked her to sleep, helped her with homework, soothed her bad dreams, packed lunches, taught her values, all to let the woman who got involved with a married man, her husband, rob her of the priceless future she was looking forward to, wedding planning, getting her ready, giving her the advice only she can give.
And the selfish mistress is feeling sorry for herself and sharing her fear of the dying wife's memory haunting her.
Is there anyone else who is thinking about this???

@@rosietouse686You are absolutely correct! Plus, let’s not forget the point that it’s not just her children that are being shared. A man and his wife of course should honestly be together for life, supporting, caring, and with true respect, loving towards each other. Instead, people need 2 women to believe in emotional maturity as a point of mutual understanding to be ditched and hitched 🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, I think, that’s treacherous and self serving.

My mom died around the time I met my mother in law. My mom was my best friend; I’ve been sick since I was 12 with the same illnesses my mom had, so we were bound together by our suffering, and making bad days fun anyway, finding ways to smile.
My MIL is a nurse. She understands the disease process, but seeing how it can absolutely ravage someone’s health and make the simplest thing complicated was hard. She wanted better for me and it was tough to not try to fix it or expect me to get better, just accept me for who I am in these circumstances.
She ended up being my maid of honor at my wedding. I missed my mom sooo much, and still do. But I’m blessed as hell to have a mother in law like her. She’s so fun!

The reality in this movie and the relationship between the two women - even if they never truly come to 'like' one another, the learn to respect.

This is a great movie. It's dramatic and sad and thoughtful. It was not a big blockbuster success, but if you find it, it's worth seeing. It was beautifully done.

You're so right - it was at least 20 years ago I watched it for the first time, and I'm still not up to redoing it in its entirety - clips are hard enough. That said, can't go past that scene where SS comes around to StepMom's mean-boy revenge plan... just brilliant, particularly in these two sets of hands!!

My stepdaughter, and her mom, took me to see this movie years ago. We all cried. I love them both, we all get along.
Years later my handicapped son, (from an accident), needed extra help for going to classes and and a few more things. The mom to my stepdaughter, picked him up, took him to some classes, helped him out. My son, she and I would go to mtgs. together to find solutions for him, and then go to lunch after.
We have always gotten along. I love her, and have a great deal of admiration and respect for her. My son hit by a hit and run driver, and he died the next day. She was with us the night before at the hospital. She helped with tge ohotos, flowers etc. for his funeral, he was 24, this was in Feb. of 2019.
She said that because I was a good stepmother to her two children, that it made her not have to worry about them. She definitely reciprocated any good that I did, to my son.

This film just gutted me. It was so well written and acted. It had this realness, as if I were a literal invisible spectator watching it all unfold...

I am sobbing at this clip. It's been a long time since I've seen Stepmom, I need to remedy that. Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Jena Malone were phenomenal.

Ive never watched the movie, but i know its premise. I love how they show how a mom and stepom can work together. How both can desire the best for the kids. How they can both love the kids. And its ok for the kids to love both, and share special moments
    with both.
I am a step mom, and i love those young men as much as i love my own. I came into this instant family telling their mom that i consider them family, and since she is family to them, she is my family. We have worked together. We sit together at graduations, we discuss Christmas and birthdays so we can coordinate gifts. It means so much to me.

I was SAd. I had a baby and I gave them to people who couldn’t have a family.
They will always be a part of me. No matter what I do. No matter what they do. We are tied for life.
My bio father did not raise me. He will not be the one who will walk me down the aisle.
The nuclear family is not the only family that exists that can feel whole.
I gave mine up so that they could have that. Bc I couldn’t give them that. Bc I was broken. And broke. And they needed people that could take care of them. And the only thing I could ever hope for is that the family I gave them to shows up for them. Every game. Every event. Every sick day. And especially their wedding day.

One of the few chick flicks I enjoyed. I’m not really a mushy kind of girl. But this one hit me in the heart. Excellent film and relatable characters. Loved it.
