The movie is Runaway Bride. The shop owner & everyone in the town knows Maggie (Julia Roberts) as having a bad reputation for planning a big wedding, then leaving the groom at the altar...running away in her wedding dress. Shop owner remarks that she only wears them 10 mins or so because no one believes she'll ever actually follow through saying "yes" & just waste another wedding dress. Ike (Richard Gere) heartbroken, jaded journalist who wrote an article about Maggie, branding her the
"runaway bride" got fired & goes to interview her & prove his article was not wrong. Maggie has $1000 bc she agreed for Ike to follow her around & interview her as she plans for another wedding - but he has to pay her. He hopes to save face as journalist, & be there when she runs at the altar for 4th time. But he ends up falling in love with her, as his facts about her are called into question.

    • @kyrafoster12
      @kyrafoster12 2 месяца назад +5

She’s also in a small town where the people make their money mostly off tourist (I believe it’s said in the movie), so the median income probably wasn’t the that high to begin with, plus it being in the 90s prior to inflation, so $1000 was still a lot for a dress then.
What surprises me about this scene and this lady is why she isn’t trying to upsell her on a dress? Given Maggie’s reputation and how many weddings she’s had, I feel like she’d jump at the chance to sell her something more expensive for commission, since the likelihood of her making it to the alter is slim. But maybe that’s mean thinking in real-world logic 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

@@SongofBeauty For clarity: Companion films don't necessarily always mean the stories have anything to do with each other.
And these two stories don't have anything to do with each other.
Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride are seen as companion films because the same team of people came together to create both films.
Most notably, the two leading actors and the director.
Runaway Bride also has a few subtle nods in that a couple of the extras that were cast were the same extras used in Pretty Woman and other films directed by Marshall.

She doesn't deserve the abuse, they are all just ADDICTED to picking on SOMEONE, so they choose a kind young woman with no support to torture.
"Maggie" desperately needs just ONE PERSON to treat her with respect, and all the townspeople are too selfish, lazy and vicious to care.

Truly. The dress ( and elaborate weddings) is beautiful but doesn’t ensure a happy marriage.
My sister bought me a wedding dress ( more like an ivory jacket and skirt but it was bridal) and I wore it where no saw it except the people getting married after me, my husband and the pastor. None of my family came to my wedding. It just wasn’t a priority to any of them. No bridal showers ( or baby showers) either. (Friends did throw me a bachelorette party but my sister said she didn’t want to come. )
And they even liked him. I was just always an afterthought in my dysfunctional family. Except when they abused me.
So I used it again when my daughter was Christened.
But the marriage lasted 6 years and then I was divorced.
Second wedding I got married in red and black pinstriped pants and a bright red blouse. Did it in a courthouse. Marriage lasted 16 years.

It does not matter how long a bride wears her wedding dress or how expensive it might be, is how it makes her feel, how her groom will look at her on that special dress and share the rest of their lives together. It’s a turning point in a woman’s life although is a leap of faith in one another but it takes two to make it work

Even $300 is too much for a dress you will only wear once. Either buy a dress you will wear multiple times or go to the thrift store.

    MINI SPOILER ALERT:
I love that this was one of many poignant moments where he not only felt sympathy for her but realized her vulnerability and defended her name. He fell in love the second he laid eyes on her. They both had to overcome their past hurts to move forward. She had to stop running because someone finally chased after her. That was all she wanted ❤

I have been reading the other comments, and that wasn’t what the shopkeeper was doing. This was the 4th time this woman had lined up to be married. The other 3 times she left the groom at the altar. She was trying to stop a very foolish young woman wasting her money yet again.
