➡️ @opeth is truly one of the most "full spectrum" bands I've ever heard. Their material ranges from soft, melancholic ballads to the most crushing death-metal riffs ever written. When I first got into the band with 2003's "Damnation", I was hooked. I explored a few neighboring albums of theirs, but admittedly never reached far back into their earlier records when bassist Johan De Farfalla was at the helm. In this video, I listen to "To Bid You Farewell" for the first time - a beautiful ballad featuring his jazzy, fretless playing from the 1996 album "Morningrise". I focus on his usage of harmonics, his interplay with upper-level chord tones, and how his bass line really tells a story. I sold the only fretless I ever owned many years ago, and listening to this track really made me regret it!

2:13 "I wish it was raining right now outside" Damn, I've never thought about it, but that's exactly what it feels to listen to Opeth
The most beautiful opeth song. Face of Melinda is up there too
For sure. I’m surprised how early on they adapted this side of their sound, really didn’t expect that!
love that song!
Agreed.
And faith in others!
the entire album "The Moor" is phenomenal
Perfect description of Opeth's softer side. Beautifully said.
My favourite Opeth song from their earlier work. A masterpiece.
damnation was my first album too. The chill and ethereal music really helped ease me into their heavier stuff. and it IS raining right now while i watch this. absolutely fantastic
Love the song, one of my favs to play. It is a really cool song to cover with bass and acoustic guitar only.
I love them. They have a special way around acoustic guitars that I’ve never heard anywhere else. Their bass lines didn’t pop to me until Mendez but their acoustic guitar work 🤌🤌🤌
You guys nailed it! They have the most thoughtful, yet simple, acoustic lines that resonate with impeccable chord progressions.
Opeth's clean sounding stuff is right up there with Pink Floyd in setting a mood and just letting you close your eyes and go along for the ride. My exposure to them was almost identical to yours. I always say they're the band that musicians listen to.
I really missed this bass players impact on their early sound. Though My Arms, Your Hearse is one of my favorite Opeth records I believe Mikael just handled all the bass on that album and I think I read somewhere that Johan was kicked out because his bass playing was very busy. I actually loved it though.
Martín Méndez is an incredible bass player but Johan de Farfalla was on another level !!
One of my fav songs to play on my bass.
You were really great at expressing your thoughts on the bass playing of Farfalla. I wish opeth had much many albums that we could hear Johan's bass playing. He has a really unique and interesting playing. Thank you for the video
Ironically, this is the bonus track on the re-issue; it wasn't on the original release. Mikael (pronounced "Michael") fired Johan in between Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse and I think he wanted to be the center of attention and felt a little upstaged or overshadowed by the bass player! The first two Opeth albums are absolutely groundbreaking! This is one of the bands that got me into death metal. If you look at the running times of the songs you quickly realize that Opeth is the Grateful Dead of metal. Johan never played in another band, that I know of, and it's a shame because he's a great player. Thanks for posting this!
You're getting some wires crossed there. This is the final track on Morningrise-the bonus track you're thinking of is the demo of Eternal Soul Torture. Still, absolutely agree with you-the loss of Johan De Farfalla is one of the bass and music world's greatest IMO. Feels like he had so much to offer that wasn't really being heard, especially in the sort of context he was playing in.
Love that type of bass playing…lyrical busy without trampling all over everything else. Line 6 or somebody had a pedal with a fret less setting on it. I thought it replicated the sound of a fretless bass. Really getting into these videos. Harmonics always add so much to a bass line.
Love to hear more about Opeth from a bass perspective. I like the softer side myself. Yet, Watershed is probably my favorite album for its expressiveness. I'd be happy to hear you talk about Credence. Talk about bass melody...
Thank you! Watershed was one I spun a LOT when it came out. While I was mainly cycling between Blackwater Park and Damnation/Deliverance, Watershed had just dropped shortly after I discovered them. The whole way the album starts had me hooked. CCR definitely has some juicy bass melodies!
My favorite Opeth track and album. I've not even got into the video yet and I'm liing it.
Nice! Thank you Erik!!
So happy I found your channel! Current student who fell in love with bass through heavy music and seeing channels like yours doing not only entertaining but informative takes on some of my favorite songs is a real treat! Thank you for what your are doing!
Welcome aboard Josue! Really appreciate the kind words. See you around! 💥
I also missed this era of Opeth, now I will definitely check it out.
So cool to hear you showcase this song. Really love this album so much.
I really enjoyed it. I listened to the rest of the album that day, and was really in awe of how musically sound they were even back then. Amazing.
@@LowEndUniversity the really raw production helped the bass pop
Thank you for this. More Opeth is appreciated :)
Thanks Viktor! You bet!
At 13 minutes, I believe he got this riff from a song from a song which they ended up making a cover of called Den Standiga Resan by Marie Fredriksson. You'll see it instantly.
Interesting!
If Damnation is one of your favourite Opeth albums, you should really check out Pale Communion their 9th studio album from 2014. Notably the two closing tracks Voice of Treason and Faith in Others are a great showcase of how Mikael's clean vocals have matured over the years. Also both are in a simiar emotional vein as To Bid You Farewell.
I've heard some of the newer stuff in passing, or shuffled on a Spotify Daily Mix, but admittedly need to "listen" start to finish and really take some of the new records in! I hear they're excellent.
You should give Advent from that LP lad, cracking song, Johann De Faralla really performs on it
Hands down best reaction to this song, thanks.
Shucks, thank you so much for that. It was a real treat hearing early Opeth - love the bass work!
One of my favorites! Awesome vid
Thank you Rico!!
Between the notes, Opeth atmospheres the sound. Felt and then drift away. But then, let's carry the story. On. Epilogue .
Agreed, Nathan - so much space and vibe, they nail it.
I think I found my favourite channel! Thanks! 😁
Aww, thank you! See you around!
Thank you for reminding me of this song... here we go again looping my opeth catalog non stop for the day haha
This song in rainy day is a must.
Right?!
Also in Face of Melinda from Still Life, a very good bass line, so i suggest for the next
One of the beautiful song ever ..Opeth 🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥
Such a beautiful song!💕
Man I really hope he listens to Opeths new stuff. Their last few albums are some of the best prog rock ever made.
Cool video man, it's nice that you break down some stuff.
Glad you liked it!
I'm glad this was recommended. I've always thought the bass on this album was amazing! I think it's all fretless if I'm not mistaken, which makes it the first metal album I heard with a fretless bass
i love this song, thankyou for taking the time to listen
Damnation is in my top 5 albums ever!!
Shit....I forgot how amazingly musical this song is. Haven't heard it in ages. So good. So few bands have the ability to generate sonic realities like Opeth do on such a consistent basis. Tool and Pink Floyd come to mind. Mars Volta and Low to a degree.
Great pick from the Opeth catalog. "The lines in my hand" is a also a good one from the Heritage album.
Can I interest you in something different? If so, take a look at the song "I ain't Mad At Cha" from Tupac's Greatest Hits album. That song has so much depth and you'd be surprised that there is no loop in the bass lines. Even though it's rap, it changes a lot throughout the duration of the song. I couldn't find who played the bass on it but man, that person knows what a good bass line sounds like.
Thank you! And, for sure going on my list! It seems this channel naturally has a strong rock/metal preference, but I want to cover all genres eventually. Appreciate this! It’s out of my wheelhouse, and really interested to explore it.
This was my favorite song of all time, until it was overtaken by "Arriving somewhere but not here" by Porcupine Tree.
Would love to see you react to that, or other Opeth tracks too of course!
Nice! Love that song, and such a huge PT fan. Just trying to rack my brain on what bass-forward songs I might could cover.
@@LowEndUniversity How about Harridan off their latest album? Pretty much a bass driven song.
I love Mendez their current bass player but I prefer this guys approach in Opeth. He’s a bit more acrobatic and harmonically interesting, he moves around more plus I’m a sucker for a fretless.
Still life is my favorite album
I would HIGHLY recommend Jacob Umansky's playthrough of Intervals - Vantablack..... or anything he does. Mind bending
When I first saw a couple of your shorts recommended I kind of dismissed you as a part of the more "meh" side of the reaction/analysis stuff on RUclips, but having gotten this video recommended I figured I had to give it a shot. I'm absolutely blow away by your ear-training, and, as a guitar player (although I write bass parts for a solo project), your insights about what the bass is doing are so invaluable, for deepening my knowledge of both bass' and guitar's musical responsibilities. I tend to feel I pick up on a lot of nuances in their music but as this is potentially my favorite album of theirs, I'm almost embarrassed to have not noticed how active the bass is. That whole first chunk of the song was like a mellow playground. Please keep doing these! This album is probably their best for bass work. It's not super audible on the next two after this sadly.
Watched them do a softer set when on tour with Katatonia. Great stuff though I wish I had of seen them do at least something off Blackwater Park.
More opeth please!!! Blackwater park?
I can't remember any of it now but about25 year ago I learned the whole song on guitar, back then it would take hours to download these mp3 tracks via dial up internet and track down the guitar tab. hahaha the good old days eh
I's born with a perfect pitch.. during the 90s.. it was a blessing.. now its 100% curse
cause no one knows how to sing anymore
lmao. the world has more good singers now than it ever has. the standards of opera may have decreased, but the overall skill level of the average singer has increased. Mikael did not have perfect pitch.
I’m assuming you’ve heard of Bell Witch but if not, check them out.
You haven't reacted to one of the best who has worked with many Satriani, Vai and Gambale...in Stu Hamm....check out his Quahogs Anyone? (119, 120 Whatever It Takes).
Love Stu, and spent some time with him at bass camps years ago. He's on my list to cover one day soon!
This bass line wasn't played by Johan. He was fired after the first album, so Mikael (the rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist) played bass on this album
Edit: This incorrect; Mikael played bass on My Arms, Your Hearse
Source?
@@LowEndUniversityMy mistake, it was Johan. I got mixed up with Morningrise mixed up with My Arms, Your Hearse. Sorry
Would love to hear you do a breakdown of, Cause We've Ended as Lovers, by Jeff Beck from the live performance, Live at Ronnie Scott's. I am sure you know who Tal Wilkenfeld is. She is playing with Jeff on this show and was only 21 at the time. ruclips.net/video/VC02wGj5gPw/видео.html
i understand that al the music is written by Michael
why do people keep riding mikael like this? every member put their effort into orchid and morningrise, after that mikael had more involvement
"Lazy music fan"....... same, man.
😅...👊🏼💥
Blackwater park was the first opeth album I heard back in 1999. Blew me away. It is my favorite album, but Still Life is honestly prolly an overall better album. If you don't know My Arms, Your Hearse well then When, and Demon of the Fall are amazing tracks
Why dont You make material about RATM, Timmi C best bass player on earth?
It’s on my list!
@@LowEndUniversity can't find it
@@nyewesata9430 He means it's on his list to make it. He hasn't already done so.

What song should I do?
A cordial greeting to you my friend!!!...No one better than you, to analyze this incredible singer who is leaving all the experts, literally with their jaws on the floor (Do you remember Jim Carrey's movie "The Mask"? well, just like that)....In 2017, a 22-year-old singer from Kazakhstan, named Dimash Kudaibergen, was invited to participate in the famous Chinese program for professional singers called "The Singer".... In his first appearance, Dimash covered one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse"....Since then all this madness began on the internet, RUclips and social networks worldwide and he is already considered the best singer on the entire planet... It is almost impossible to see a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges of 8 octaves, that is, the 88 keys of a digital piano, which allows him to reach all registers, both masculine and feminine, that is, he can sing as Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contratenor, Contralto, Mezzosoprano and Soprano.....You can see in RUclips to all kinds of experts (Vocal coaches, analysts, singing teachers, singers, youtubers, reactors, etc.), who have dedicated themselves to watching his videos and verifying for themselves that what is said about him is completely true...In addition to all this, Dimash is capable of singing in more than 12 languages...In all his concerts worldwide, tickets are sold in just seconds, via the internet, due to the immense popularity he has worldwide.... Anyway, I think you haven't met this impressive singer yet, so here is the link to the first song that Dimash performed in China in that year 2017, the song S.O.S., and if it doesn't bother you, I would like you to mention me as the person who recommended it to you....Warning: You have to be prepared for thousands of views, comments and new subscribers...The video It is more recent, so it does not have the millions of views that the first ones, but it is more complete, including an intro, subtitles in several languages and better audio and sound quality.....ruclips.net/video/bDX3FhmyNac/видео.html
I have seen him! I appreciate the suggestion, but only focus on bass players and bass playing on this channel.
so boring. Creating the stuff is the thing. Copying after listening 20 times is just so boring to watch.
what?
