Hey Mark! Thanks for the props and thanks for taking this on! And I also want to thank Brian from Wilhelm for recommending it! Brian is an amazing player! Everyone you have had on here is an amazing player. Starting to love this channel! So great work! Love that you are exploring the bass punk world. So many good players.
A few fun facts about this song:
    - Yes, I tracked this with a pick. I play with my fingers too, and I slap. I am mostly a finger player in Lagwagon (Jesse who was OG played with this fingers).
    - I was 23 at the time of this recording.
    - I wrote the music for this song and arranged it with our drummer for RKL at the time, Dave Raun. That's why its bass heavy and groovy.
    - This album was produced and engineered by Pat Coughlin, who also engineered/produced the Bay Area metal band Forbidden (hence the metal production). And he also did a bunch of No Use For A Name albums as well.
    - I wrote this song on speed (thanks for the recommendation Lemmy)
    - This whole album was written without Bomer (he quit the band before this recording and new line up)
    - I tracked 2 songs on this record playing with my fingers and did one bass breakdown with a fretless bass.
    - I huffed almost all of the dust off in the studio during this recording (sorry The Music Annex, I owe you a case of Dust Off)
And I want to make one special request and recommendation for you to do on this channel, PLEASE review "Legend Of The 7 Plies" by the band Cigar. Jonathan Hischke is an incredibly insane bass player that is all fingers. You have to do this tune! Please!
Thanks again! GO RKL IN 2024!!

I’d also suggest Face to Face Bent But Not Broken, Lagwagon Obsolete Absolute, Propagandhi Night Letters (the bassist Todd the Rod also sings lead vocals on that track), Descendents Bikeage, ALL Original Me, and Strung Out The Animal and The Machine. Good to see some Raposo love! Joe is a hometown (San Mateo, CA) hero and plays bass in Lagwagon among a few other bands. IIRC, he was playing a Steinberger at the time.
As for RKL, they started as a straight up hardcore/thrash band from Southern California then started moving into more of that AC/DC-tinged metal/HC around the time Joe joined the band. Their well-loved drummer Bomer, probably one of punk’s best and underrated drummer, passed away back in 2005 or so, which made way for Lagwagon.

There was a pretty significant overlap between the Thrash metal and Hardcore scenes, especially in the early days. Most of the thrash bands were as much fans of punk as they were stuff like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. RKL are pretty frequently lumped in as part of the 'crossover thrash' scene, which basically consisted of hardcore bands that leaned into metal to varying degrees.

its great to see someone talk about the musical side of the skate punk style. i play in a punk band like this, and when i talk the actual music and whats going on there, i find a lot of people just go blank and drop out of that conversation. There is a lot of intricate and detailed stuff going on in a lot of punk music. check out the later propagandhi, or belvedere albums !! and Cigar !!!

Growing up in Santa Barbara County RKL was one of my favorites and Chris Rest was my Guitar Hero when I started playing guitar as a kid. RKL was way ahead of their time. Musically genius. I was lucky to have seen them live many times as a kid. RKL are legend

You were once again spot on, there's some metal influence on this and a few other bands from around the same time. A few former RKL guys formed Lagwagon, which is a way more poppier band, but you can still hear that metal creeping in. There was a lot of overlap between thrash and hardcore in the 80s, bands like RKL, Strung Out and Propagandhi kinda took that to this more "melodic" side of things.

RKL what can I say? This album has stuck on me ever since it was released.. I’ve seen a ton of punk shows since 1993 but RKL never passed my way. A show in 1996 in Kontich Lintfabriek Belgium was cancelled so 😭.
Hoping you guys get it together in 2024 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. Peace ❤

Back in my punk band days we were in the same situation after getting booked to play our first show. Right before the promotor called, we had just finished laughing that the first ingredient in bacon bits was Simulated Bacon. So we threw that out in a panic and people loved it so much that Simulated Bakon was born. (we purposely misspelled bacon)

& some people think of punk as just 3 or 4 chords in a song.
(Yeah, a lot of people usually think of the Ramones or Sex Pistols as the first punk bands, but it was already a thing before either band started. Actually, the sex pistols were created by record exec to cash in on the punk craze)

It’s also worth noting that producer/engineer Ryan Greene went to work for Fat Mike after making Megadeath’s Countdown to Extinction and Greene helped define the melodic (“skate”) punk sound of this era, producing NOFX, as well as metal influenced punk bands like Propagandhi, Strung Out, and Lagwagon

I highly recommend reacting to Got The Time by Joe Jackson. It isn't exactly punk, but the bass part is very much in the same vein as what you've been reacting to recently and the song has an incredible bass solo. Anthrax did a fairly faithful cover with the solo intact, but I've always preferred the original.

I highly recommend checking out rodger Lima’s bass playing from Less than Jake. First album first track “automatic” is a great one. He’s a picker but has rhythm and jazzy chops at 100x speed
Matt Wong from Reel Big Fish is fantastic too, check out “trendy,” this guy stood in the back of the stage next to the drummer and just walked the bass for 120 minutes at a time like a machine, he’s got good slaps too.
And omg, NOBODY plays bass like Karl Alvarez from the Descendants and ALL. Finger style at Mach speed with insane chops. Any song would do, but “everything sucks” has some fun downward chromatics and licks and “I’m the one” has just, killer bass man.

Since you talk about Ska quite a bit, you should do "Someday I Suppose" by the Bosstones... a very different sort of playing, but probably one of the groovyest bass hooks in punk rock. The term "rockabilly" need not apply in describing Joe Gittleman's lines.

They re probably tuned down. So the bass can be quickly pass from the open A string (now a G) to the twelve fret. As he often goes back and forth super quick between the two octaves.
