➡️ I didn’t know punk rock could be THIS EPIC! My first time hearing “The Decline” by NOFX was such a worthy and righteous start to 2024, and I can’t thank you all enough for shoving the requests in my face for weeks on end. This was unbelievable. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing familiar songwriting elements from “Idiots Are Taking Over” - the clever chord progressions, the bass-heavy melodies - but I feel like the curtain was lifted to a unexpected goldmine of songwriting with this one. I discuss so many things that I can hardly list them: Fat Mike’s circular picking technique with bass chords, the theory behind each song segment, recurring themes and motifs, smooth AF secondary dominants, minor IVs, and simply how brilliant this epic track is. You guys also tricked me into doing a full-album reaction, but I’m so glad I did. This is hands down my favorite reaction video I’ve done to date. It truly left me speechless. 😶💫

Noi siamo una band Punk HC del Sud Italia Salento :)))) ruclips.net/video/09veuePIOf8/видео.htmlsi=bQC4IyAPXCZyQhsO

Once you dive in their songs and how it’s crafted and get over the “it’s punk” visage it has, you start to see Mike’s genius and the other dudes in the band all these years that they’ve been doing it. I jumped aboard on a whim when “The War on Errorism” was released and it blew me away. I started bass playing around that time too and it’s still my favorite album by them. It's interesting that you mentioned Mike's voice as being some what pleasing, because I feel like a lot of people might hate his voice because it's so harsh. But I was listening to them a few weeks ago, and I was just so relaxed, that I realized that NOFX feels like "home". I've been listening to them since I was a kid, and their music pushes all of the right buttons and puts me at ease. What you felt at the conclusion of the Decline is what I and many others feel for this band on the daily.

As someone who's been playing punk rock for 20 years (and 99% self taught) it's always extremely cool to see formally educated and super talented players dissect these songs from a technical point of view. Random somewhat related fact: the last track on every Drag The River album is the same album in one single track. I once asked a band member (Jon Snodgrass) why, and he told me that it was for jukeboxes in bars (which you don't see in my country either). I remember the first time I listened to this song. My freshmen english teacher. Gave us the lyrics, and I memorized the entire song. Still listen to it all the time. This was in 2003 and the song still will hold up against a lot of material.

Punk is more than the music you hear. It was a community for people didn’t have a community. It was where you can pick up someone’s instrument for the first time, learn 3 chords, and scream into the microphone. The beauty in the simplicity and chaos. That said, Fat Mike’s bass is incredible!

Musically it’s a Punk Rock opera, it’s a masterpiece and the message resonates so much, it’s scary. This song is so intense and emotionally invoking it’s brought me to tears, specifically the part: oh brother where, have you gone to I swear… I can’t even finish typing it because it’s too much. The idea of a kid accidentally killing his brother and dealing with the loss, the guilt and suffering that will never completely go away. It’s just horrible and it’s happened before many times. It’s why I don’t own a gun, I have two sons and this scares the shit out of me.
