Thanks for doing a play through, I actually started out a finger style player and do both depending on what I'm playing, in fact face to face was the first band I played exclusively with a pick (except for our "acoustic" tours where I played finger style) i'm sure crossover between fingers and picks informs my stylistic choices but who knows.. whenever it's freezing cold and I'm worried about a difficult first song of a set Trever always mentions I do it to myself..hahahaha
I laughed a little when he started slapping to get that run right, I used to do that all the time when I played more bass. I like the finger tone better mostly, but there are little timing things that I simply can not do with fingers.
Scott!! Appreciate you stopping by, such a treat to discover you and your music and can’t wait to check out more of it. Inspiring to watch you play, and definitely can relate to hard parts you write coming back to haunt you sometimes 😅
The reason i enjoy these videos is because watching you get your mind blown, or simply just enjoying the songs, reminds me of the first time discovering these bands. It's like im getting those same dopamine shots in my brain vicariously through you. Thanks for the videos. I hope they keep coming!
Now. .🙏 wheres our nomeansno video. Youve done almost all the other essential underground stuff at this point. Except david sims of jesus lizard and scratch acid and carlos dingler of interpol- but thats not really underground, but what is anymore. Barricade by interpol would be a great song to do a video on. And post punk has kinda been under represented on your channel(especially for being such a great rock subgenre for bass) so that might get my vote even before nomeansno.
It reminds me of when I find a song that blows my mind and then I get to show it to my friend and see it blow their mind. Sharing that feeling is at least twice as good as stumbling upon it on your own
Thanks for doing this one! This song has been my final boss for a long time. I've got most of it down with the exception of the intro. Like, I KNOW how to play it, but my picking hand just doesn't compute. Loved your commentary.
Face to Face are so freaking good live. They have more of an emotional touch than a lot of other bands of the genre and are great song writers. You can hear that even on their very early stuff like Disconnected. This band introduced me to sooooo many bands that I would fall in love with. They would take so many up and comers on tour with them. The amount of people who discovered Alkaline Trio, Saves the Day, The Anniversary, Get Up Kids, etc. from going to Face to Face shows is actually crazy. They may have been a "punk" band but they were instrumental in making the late 90's/early 2000's pop punk/emo explosion happen for many groups. That Vagrant era of bands is very dear to my heart and I would have never have found any of that stuff if I wasn't going to Face to Face shows.
Yeah, I think pretty much everyone toured with F2F in their formative years. With Mxpx in particular, you could hear Face to Face influence all through their early albums.
I've been dying for you to discover Scott Shiflett, he's an incredible musician! This has become one of my favourite channels over the last 6 months, keep being awesome 😁
If Face to Face ever gets out to your neck of the woods, show up early or hang out after. Not only are the guys in the band the nicest, coolest, most genuine bunch of dudes, but Scott will sit and talk music and bass with you all night. Super, SUPER rad dude! Just got tix to see them in Chicago in May. Can't wait for the show. Look forward to checking out more of your vids! Keep thumpin!
WOW ! FACE TO FACE REACTION! Face to Face are the reason that I'm alive. Lost my mom with 17 yrs old and started living by myself.. drugs adiction and so many bad stuff! Love this band, keep it going! You should do Lagwagon, really! "GIve It Back" has a awesome bassline and mini-solo! You gotta listen to album version lyrics are great ! EDIT 2: You should do Millencolin early stuff as well like "Olympic", "Leona", "Dance Craze", "Mr. Clean", "Friends til the end"
Interesting hearing a non punk bassist describe punk technique. For me its filling in the gaps with walking harmonies and even chords, while also giving those driving parts the low end more straight. Harmonies on bass is 🤘
has anyone suggested Tube Disasters by Flux of Pink Indians yet? Absolutely iconic bass line playing with variations on riff and a different flavor of punk than you've covered previously
I’ve been loving the punk series you have been doing. It’s really great to see you reacting to all these songs I’ve listened to and loved over the years. It’s cool to see you get excited over the playing but I’m curious to ask if you are becoming a fan of punk music in general after being exposed to it like this? It’s one thing to be a fan of the playing but do you find you like the music overall compared to the music that you really have enjoyed listening to your whole life?
I absolutely am. I’m in this weird spot where I’m not exploring it because I want to do the songs here with everyone, but at some point soon I’m going to just dive in from everyone’s recommendations and binge it. It’s truly a genre I overlooked as a bassist, and my mind has been opened to a whole new style of playing and skill. I’m super stoked on it!
It’s funny hearing you analyze these songs like this because I guarantee you 80% of these bands aren’t too familiar with music theory and much like most punk musicians we just sit there and suffer through finding out the right notes until something sounds cool 😂
@LowEndUniversity No-no, you got it right in this video. Whenever Chris, the guitarist, says the name of the band, he pronounces it Prop-uh-GAN-dee. Everybody else -- including Fat Mike, who originally released their albums -- pronounces it with "Gone", like Gone With The Wind, in the middle. They're probably both right, but I'm gonna go with the way the band members pronounce it, hahaha. EDIT: I am so damn confused now. I thought you'd pronounced it with a GAN. Maybe I'm getting my videos mixed up. And did I post this on a Face to Face video? I feel like I'm losing my mind. EDIT 2: Ohh, you did say Propagandhi in this video. I'll see myself out . . . 🤦♂️
Every one pronounces it like Gandhi, the famous Indian activist. Because that's the whole point of the name propaganda+Gandhi... The reason Christ and the band pronounce it the other way is because they are very -very- VERY Canadian.
Chris Shiflett used to play guitar in a punk band called No Use For A Name before joining the Foo Fighters. Funny thing is the bassist from No Use For A Name (Matt Riddle) was the original bassist for Face to Face...and he is pretty neat too
no use for a name is basically hero of melodic punk rock in malaysia and indonesia everybody in the underground scene, love no use and tony sly and also they all try to be like nufan or nofx but fails lol they end up sounds like hi-standard,kemuri,dustbox and others japanese punk band 😂
They both played in me first in the gimmie gimmies also and the bass player for foo fighters was the bass player for a way underrated band Sunny day real estate. I love the big choice and don’t turn away but they were good to part ways with Matt and get Scott
Face to Face is notorious for cool ass basslines dating back to their first bassist from Don't Turn Away. 1000x and Walk the Walk have amazing basslines. The energy of a face to face show is off the charts. I went to see Strung Out but I was amazed that Face to Face blew the fucking roof off man
I’ll say it for myself: I enjoy watching your videos because no one else does or ever done. I play punk rock for 20 years now and listened to it my entire life. Punk rock players and songwriting are SO underrated and we never get to see some expert musicians talking about them and appreciating the melodies. Thank you so much for your videos and kind words towards these incredible musicians!
No way! I probably mentioned this on the channel before when you did the Descendents, but I got to intern at the Blasting Room Studios in Fort Collins, CO when I was in college. Face to Face recorded Protection there and I got to drive them to and from the airport. Scott was super cool, and him I talked about music for a long time. We nerded out over our love for Rush, Yes, and other prog bands of the 70’s. He’s also a pretty damn good guitar player and played some Van Halen for me
Another great video/song from another legendary punk band. Now sure if it's been requested or not yet - but - STRUNG OUT !!! They have a super deep catalog and were/are a very important band in the Fat Wreck Chords era/culture. Even being one of my favorite bands , I'm struggling to choose even one song to recommend. But I think you would dig them. Very technical, at times heavy, but super melodic. Add em to the never-ending list!
Ever since I saw you reacting to a Wilhelm Scream "The horse" I've been checking out all the videos and regularly checking back for new videos. Love the punk stuff
Would love to see you react to something more unsophisticated and dingy. Something considered "pure punk" (whatever that means). Just to see your genuine reaction to bands like Crass, the Casualties, GBH, etc
So glad you featured Scott. Hes my favorite punk bassist. This video series has been great. May be worth checking out Face to Face's old bassist, Matt Riddle in his orher band No Use For A Name. Hes super good too.
@@LowEndUniversity Disconnected is a great song, the bass is tasty but not anything noteworthy IMO. I'd say that the Velocity intro is probably the most iconic lne from the Matt era. Too, the Dregs of Sobriety from No Use for a Name showcases both Riddle's playing, and Tony Sly's amazing songwriting pretty well.
@@LowEndUniversity “I’m Trying”-whether it’s the Don’t Turn Away version or the one on the live album-has always had my favorite bass parts. Lots of great walking transitions, great melodic stuff, and some fun alternate picking in there too.
I really appreciate a studied musician being respectful and more than that, inspired by punk rock music. Back when I was young and started listening to this genre, most of the metalheads have my sh*T because it was “too simple”, “too easy”.
Honestly, as someone who ended up playing bass in my bands, I think a lot of us punk bassists started as guitar players. Rodger from less than Jake did 100%. A lot of that picking and styling is just playing what a second guitarist would play… on bass 😅 Then we fall in love with bass and learn how to actually play it like it “should be,” but that “guitar mind” never fades, it just gets mixed in. If you’re having some difficulty learning picking, my main advice is to anchor your hand. If you watch Scott he almost never moves his wrist from where it is. Super important for control.
Great points! I was thinking about this during the video - is that picking cadence really as hard as it looks or sounds? May be a breeze for a guitarist, but what I do know is that overdriven leads are always easier to make sound clean. Bass has much wider string spacing, cleaner tones (no overdrive compression to rely on), and I think getting it to sound that good is the feat itself. Reminds me of the times I got my amazing guitar player friends to try to shred on bass and it always falls apart pretty quickly 😂
I love the fact that as a fingerstyle player you get to underline Punk Rock pick players chops to the people out there that are more like "yeah, punk is easy"
Yeah, it ain’t easy. If it isn’t technically difficult, it’s probably just fast, and that’s tough in and of itself. Some really challenging stuff, I think that’s why I’ve fallen in love with it. A whole new side of bass playing for me.
@@LowEndUniversity btw, you should check Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) out. It's not the most skilled Punk Rock player in the world, but I think he is very underrated. His roots are in classic rock and he used to play in ska bands and such. I'd like to know what you think about his playing. Unlike Jason Black (Hot Water Music, that released an EP together), Joe Principe (Rise Against), Matt Freeman (Rancid) his sound is less "in your face", and I think that's the main reason people don't mention him a lot.
Now you gotta do a compare and contrast with Face To Face’s original bassist Matt Riddle. Either something from his time in F2F or his time in No Use For A Name (a band that Scott’s brother Chris also played in)
It wasn't. The way he pronounced it in this video is correct. Chris Hannah jokes that even he forgets how it's pronounced, but any time he says it, it's with the A sounding like Can, not Con.
@@LowEndUniversityYou said it correctly in this video. A lot of people say it incorrectly. The singer/guitarist/songwriter, Chris Hannah, says it the way you said it in this video.
Face to Face is the single most under rated band in punk rock. They have created so man great great songs and nobody can touch their catalog. Don't Turn Away and Face to Face are basically 15 straight hits each.
One down, another 1000 to "pick" from! If you wanna "pick" something new you should try Anti Flag - Spaz' House ..., I'd tell you but ... or Press Corpse or any other track with an awesome bass line form them. PS. great job, keep 'em coming! 🎸👀❤️
You're the best bass channel there is hands down!! Not only you're very humble and pleasant to watch, but also you're one of the rare professional music RUclipsrs who doesn't look down on Punk music but instead tries to learn something from it. Keep it up
Face to Face bass playing has been sick since Matt Riddle...played with his fingers btw. Check out Not Enough from the Over it EP. Oh, and you rule dude...love your channel, and your thoughtful commentary. True pro.
You should check more pop punk... Artist: MxPx Song: My Mom Still Cleans My Room Album: Life In General (1996) Bass player Mike Herrera uses finger picking on that and earlier albums, but eventually switched to pick
*Scott's the best **_guitarist_** in face to face,* even though he's the bassist. [And he IS a RIPPIN' bass player, but he's also 100% shredtastically skilled on 6 string guitar. Oh, and plays a dark baritone guitar for his Viva Death project, too.] Love Chris' guitar work with the Gimmes, and of course the Foo Fighters. But in a "Crossroads" battle with the Devil, I'd pick Scott to play.
I hope you'll consider to do some non-american bands. My suggestions are: The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket (I assume you've heard London Calling) Refused - Deadly Rhythm Nekromantix - Who Killed The Cheerleader (you need to Google up a picture of his bass, because it looks awesome) The Barstool Preacher's - One Fool Down
BTW, Propagandhi pronounce is GAN but most people pronounce is GONE, so much so that the band said they don’t have a preference and are fine with both pronunciations. Just FYI. You did fine.
YES! I commented on a previous video (I think maybe Rancid - Maxwell Murder) that you should watch some Face to Face, specifically this play through. Shiflett is the bomb! Thanks for doing this one!
I've seen f2f more times than I can count.. you gotta see Scott play live! Dudes, a fucking animal! FIRECRACKER from Strung Out, next!.. or at least, put it on your radar!
You're spot on, the key to this style of picking is a mix of alternate/ inside picking and string skipping. This along with the way notes are grouped in 3's and 4's makes this style of riff so interesting to both listen to and play
It's awesome that I am getting into your channel just as you're getting into my 'home base' genre of music. Watching you analyze and geek out a bit on this art is giving me a new respect for bass, and as a drummer my baseline levels of respect for it were pretty high to begin with. I must say you MUST check out Tiger Army. Stand up bass psychobilly groove punk. There is nothing else like it. For an introduction, I might recommend "Temptation," which appeared on Punk-O-Rama Volume 9 many years ago.
I'm not a bass player or even musically inclined at all, Good Riddance is one of my favorite bands and I've always thought Chuck Platt was a really good bass player. I remember hearing More Depalma, Less Fellini for the first time and being blown away by his playing. Also saw someone mention Banner Pilot, Nate Gangelhoff always seemed really good too. Enjoying the punk videos and following you on discovering of Punk music
Quick fun note about Shiflett. A couple weeks back I went to the Punk Rock Museum (highly recommend btw) and did a guided tour with Randy Bradbury (bass player for Pennywise). We talked about who we all thought the best punk bass player was. Scott Shiflett was his choice. Not only do we all fans think he's legit, but he is also highly respected among his peers.
When people are geeking out about Matt Freeman I have to wonder if they’ve ever actually watched or listened to Scott’s playing, he can play circles around most of his peers as far as I’m concerned
I would love for you to do a video on the live version of Dissension from 1997. I listen to this album so frequently because it’s amazing what they did in this live set. It’s so hard to pick one song from it because the last three are amazing bass songs themselves. Here’s the video: ruclips.net/video/bUaXaSvWLTE/видео.htmlsi=S0nmklrcThrDcOt3 Keep up the great work!! Love the channel.

I've seen Face to Face numerous times and always ALWAYS post up in front of Scotty. He's incredible.
Same here. I will fight for that front row spot 🤣
Same. About to see them again in October and mad I don’t get to go right up in front of him since they are playing in an amphitheater

A lot of that picking and styling is just playing what a second guitarist would play… on bass 😅
Then we fall in love with bass and learn how to actually play it like it “should be,” but that “guitar mind” never fades, it just gets mixed in.
He's one of my favorites. I'm glad he knows it (as he liked my comment on Facebook)!
every time i saw this band, i ended up right in front of Scott. held on for dear life. best ever i think. MOAR FACE TO FACE! Walk the Walk, yes
Defiance - Concealed Genocide
Conflict- I Heard a Rumor
Nice bass solos
One of my favorite bands of all time. They have some really great albums that are good all the way through.
Now you gotta do a compare and contrast with Face To Face’s original bassist Matt Riddle. Either something from his time in F2F or his time in No Use For A Name (a band that Scott’s brother Chris also played in)
I feel your original pronunciation of propagandhi was correct.
Good! Haha, I was just throwing a lil’ shade.
Scott is a better guitar player than Chris and he’s a awesome bass player
You gotta check out the European bands: SATANIC SURFERS early stuff is amazing!
They’re on the list!
CHECK OUT THE SONG "WANT" BY JAWBREAKER!!!!
Face to Face is the single most under rated band in punk rock. They have created so man great great songs and nobody can touch their catalog. Don't Turn Away and Face to Face are basically 15 straight hits each.
Please do Cigar- Wright & Wrong!!
SAVES THE DAY- AT YOUR FUNERAL. Eben is SUCH a beast and a finger style player! The bass is great
The song is probably my least favorite on the album, but Eben’s parts on it are solid as hell. He’s also such a smooth player live, cool as fuck.
Scott is one of my all time favorite bass players. He also shreds on guitar!
Nomeansno - It's Catching Up
This guys gets it😊 Face to Face forever!
Fall children by AFI is a pretty neat track
One down, another 1000 to "pick" from! If you wanna "pick" something new you should try Anti Flag - Spaz' House ..., I'd tell you but ... or Press Corpse or any other track with an awesome bass line form them. PS. great job, keep 'em coming! 🎸👀❤️
This was awesome! Thank you sir 😊
You're the best bass channel there is hands down!! Not only you're very humble and pleasant to watch, but also you're one of the rare professional music RUclipsrs who doesn't look down on Punk music but instead tries to learn something from it. Keep it up
Next request: Lagwagon- Obsolete Absolute
That song is killer
Face to Face bass playing has been sick since Matt Riddle...played with his fingers btw. Check out Not Enough from the Over it EP. Oh, and you rule dude...love your channel, and your thoughtful commentary. True pro.
not enough is THE F2F bass track, so underrated!!!
Doesn't know Aces High? This guy has just been trolling all along.
You should check more pop punk...
Artist: MxPx
Song: My Mom Still Cleans My Room
Album: Life In General (1996)
Bass player Mike Herrera uses finger picking on that and earlier albums, but eventually switched to pick
Cigar wright and wrong
You mean Chris Shiflett from No Use For A Name right?
That’s his brother. He was in northern Canada.
Little bro played/s in both.
I know he was in both...I'm just trying to give Tony and NUFAN a little shout out.
*Scott's the best **_guitarist_** in face to face,* even though he's the bassist. [And he IS a RIPPIN' bass player, but he's also 100% shredtastically skilled on 6 string guitar. Oh, and plays a dark baritone guitar for his Viva Death project, too.]
Love Chris' guitar work with the Gimmes, and of course the Foo Fighters.
But in a "Crossroads" battle with the Devil, I'd pick Scott to play.
Shifty is the GOAT. No comparisons. You can’t change my mind. And this isn't even the best song of his catalog IMO.
I hope you'll consider to do some non-american bands.
My suggestions are:
The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket (I assume you've heard London Calling)
Refused - Deadly Rhythm
Nekromantix - Who Killed The Cheerleader (you need to Google up a picture of his bass, because it looks awesome)
The Barstool Preacher's - One Fool Down
BTW, Propagandhi pronounce is GAN but most people pronounce is GONE, so much so that the band said they don’t have a preference and are fine with both pronunciations.
Scott Shiflett is a beast!!
You dont know Aces High by Iron Maiden? What the heck dude? haha...great video..thanks for putting this stuff up..love it!
Here’s the video: ruclips.net/video/bUaXaSvWLTE/видео.htmlsi=S0nmklrcThrDcOt3
Keep up the great work!! Love the channel.
