Agree with all the names you mentioned. But also Tite coaching Flamengo has now ramped up the level. The recent game between Tite's Flamengo and Abel's Palmeiras was a spectacular match of football. Tite may have failed with Brazil, but the man is an excellent coach with two serie a titles, a Libertadores, and Club world cup trophy. Next year, the Libertadores and Brasileirao are gonna be so much more competitive.

After losing two cups he was hired for far below what he is worth, as if losing a world cup meant you are such a terrible coach.... tite's brazil was great (both of them, 2018 and 2022). It just happens that the world cup is the world cup. 82's brazil was magical and didn't win. Johan Cruyff never lifted the trophy either. Anyways, i'm glad we have him on board. Eu sou brasileiro, optei por escrever em meu idioma mesmo. Acredito que as táticas do Fernando Diniz podem trazer uma contribuição muito importante para o futebol, ela ainda carrega falhas, principalmente falhas defensivas, pois tiram os jogadores de posição e abrem espaços para contra ataques quando perdem a bola. Mas isso pode ser modificado, e cada treinador pode pegar o que mais lhe interessar e aplicar em seu time, bem como Diniz com o tempo pode modificar suas táticas. O ponto mais importante é o esporte evoluir dentro de campo, com novas formas de jogar, priorizando jogadores de bom passe, visão de jogo, nem sempre forte fisicamente, mas bons tecnicamente.
Achei que esse método se encaixa muito bem na filosofia do futebol brasileiro. Este estilo de jogo aproveita a principal vantagem que os jogadores brasileiros têm sobre os jogadores estrangeiros: improvisação e habilidade decorrente de uma rica tradição de dribles de perto através do futsal.
Concordo com o comentario sob o ponto de vista do ataque. Defensivamente, o estilo deixa muito a desejar. Um exemplo foi o jogo contra o Boca, um time muito limitado e sem jogadores com muito dominio de bola mas com muita raca. Eles conseguiram empatar e em boa parte do jogo tomar conta da iniciativa (embora bem limitada). Acredito que o numero de chutes em gol foi bem parelho. Eh por este motivo que a nivel selecao, o conceito tem que ser trabalhado bem mais antes de ser aplicado.

Fluminense fan here One aspect to Diniz' work that I believe is often overlooked is the way he works with the players themselves. The best example of this is John Kennedy himself, who, in the beggining of the year, was at a loan to a smaller club and was about to be let go because of some behavioural issues. However, Diniz kept him in the team and build a trust relationship with him, which enabled him to go from about to scoring arguably the most important goal in the clubs history. Often times nowadays we expect things, and worst of all, people, to just work on the first time around without any adjustment and that's just not the way it goes.

Fernando Diniz often used to go to the high school I studied at to talk with the futsal coach - which was my coach at the time. Hence I talked to him a couple of times but obviously a long long time ago and he was always incredibly kind to me and to the other kids. It happened in Sao Paulo in 2006. I really happy to see he's getting the appreciation he deserves.
Great vid, just one thing to add! Something that other countries tend to not get is the way Brazil played the 4-2-4: Brazil played that style for almost.... 20 years. It consisted of two wingers, a centerfoward and a position that we called "ponta de lança" (spearhead, literally), which was almost a second striker and given to the most skilled attacker, like Pele. When Diniz made 3 subs, getting John Kennedy, Diogo Barbosa and Lima at the field, Germán Cano backed to the "ponta de lança" position, penetrating the defense and also going back to defend, while John, young, rested and full of personality, got to receive the ball against very tired adverseries. Diniz style of play not only is getting back the real brazilian style of play, but also rescuing old brazilian traditions and mixing them: most of 50's and 60's videos show very static formations, like the positional players today so adding up the brazilian "casual" football of exchanging positions when necessary makes it seem like not only a ressurgence of "jogo bonito", but a try at "jogo bonito 2.0".

OK, great video, but I want to bring up another approach regarding what you said at 1:20 to 1:45 : Rinus Michels' Dutch team (74 - 78) definitely created new concepts and inspires coaches (directly or indirectly) to this day, just as Cruifjj's teams. But we can't let Brazil's 1970 team out of this conversation. Due to having four stars who would normally play the same position in a team (Pelé, Gérson, Rivellino and Tostão), legendary coach Zagallo took a revolutionary decision. He moved Gérson back almost to a defensive midfielder and played Tostão as a "falso 9" , which literally means an offensive player positioned on the pitch as a striker but in reality, moves freely out of the box with the main purpose of creating rather than finishing plays. He brought in Jairzinho to play up as a winger instead of putting him at center forward, the position he usually played for his club. And finally, he left Pelé free to play up front, just as Guardiola did MANY, MANY years later with Messi. Rinus Michels saw this and went one step further, leaving virtually no fixed-position players in his team. This mixture of the Brazilian team of '70 and the Dutch team of '74 ended up culminating in Telê Santana's choices in '82 when he had Zico, Sócrates, Falcão and Éder. Let's keep In mind that the 1982 World Cup was held in Spain and Pep Guardiola has openly said during interviews that he based some of this ideas on the tactics of that team, which unfortunately ended up losing to Italy and which is the greatest translation of "Joga bonito", the term that you guys from abroad admire so much and that we Brazilians have also adopted after the Nike ads hahaha The bottom line is this: You can't tell which was the specific origin of relativism in Football, but certainly, the Brazilian team of '70 had a big influence on this ideology. Brazil adopted an more positional and defensive stance after Tele Santana defeat on 1982 and 1986 World Cups (1982 squad is regarded as one of the best Brazilian teams ever with Zico, Falcão, Cerezo, Socrares and Junior). Tele himself did managed to win World club title twice with São Paulo on 1992/1993 (on 1992 with Guardiola himself as the main midfielder for Barcelona). Nice to see a very respectful analysis of Diniz. Yes, Europe has the best players, because they have the $$$$ to hire south americans for example. Copa Libertadores is probably the hardest competition to win, since the money gap between the clubs is not the abyss Europe has with other clubs. There is also the whole atmosphere, the fact that is way harder to keep the elite players since they'll leave for Europe or retire since are veterans. Champions League is awesome, but will never be La Copa.

As brazilian, Fernando Diniz is not just changing everything we know about football tatics, but also he is changing how we treat football players, clubs and all aspects around our football structure. Besides football coach, he is psychologist and he faces the football world ( which is Brazil is really tough) from a different perspective. If you look for his enterviews he always come up with the importance of support the players, especially mentally, because we know the humble origins of football players in brazil and sometimes this mens are not ready to assume this pressure. I would say that he is the brazilian Ted Lasso, as he always says, "winning is not important. Important is to be a great man, great husband, dad and son".
Diniz´s tactics haven´t worked on the National team yet, probably because most of the players are so deep into positional play, as most of the squad plays in europe. Vini and Bruno are two extraordinary players, but they haven´t developed that sense of relationism in the squad as much , as they left brazil pretty early and found their path on european football, so the roles on the pitch for them are still pretty much coincident to the positional play. Vini is stuck in the wing while Bruno lays back the game at times. Though, I believe on Diniz´s potential to bring back the Jogo Bonito, he just needs time, just like in the clubs, he always had quick stays at clubs, 9 months max, because results to relationism don´t come quick, so Fluminense believed on him and now they are Libertadores champions.
As a Fluminense's fan, I say congratulations on the video, great job. This style demands a lot of training, I don't think it would work on a national team that trains a lot less together. Ancelotti is expected to train Brazil after his contract with Real and Diniz will keep 100% on Flu. Nino is already 26, but he is doing a great job and deserves better then the team in England he is probably going to. As far as Diniz, he is very stuborn with the players he likes, even though they dont't deliver and he likes the team to pass the ball too much on the defense when the keeper starts the play.

It's not about occupying the same position. It's about keeping a line between players without opposition. Its about creating passing options, opportunities for dummies etc. Thinking about positional play is talking about space, you can draw lines, but you are thinking about area. If you talk about relational play, that's all about the lines, you can talk about the overload in a specific area, but you are always thinking about the lines. Look at the amount of options that everyone have when they have the ball, everyone else gravitates towards them to create more lines of options
Sometimes novelty alone is sufficient to gain an advantage. Only time will determine if this system is a revolution or will be easily counteracted and fades into the annals if history.
At least in the context of Diniz, this isn't novelty, however. Quite the opposite, Diniz has being playing this kind of football from the beginning, and he has been very well known in Brazil for quite the long time. His tactics have evolved, of course, but his essence is still the same. The reason he is only getting talked about more broadly recently is that this is the first time he's been able to convert his philosophy into titles. Previously, he has been known for building squads that play good football, but we're never quite able to get the top spot in anything. I know this doesn't necessarily mean this philosophy will be successful at the highest level of football, and I don't even disagree with you. All I'm saying is that, at least in Brazil, the more time goes on it seems that Diniz's relationism is the one ahead of the adaptation curve, not the other way around.
He is developing this system since 2014 at least. It only got better with time. Its not a mere possibility, it's a reality now that Fluminense has won the Libertadores. I dont know if it will ever surpass Guardiola's tactics, for example, but novelty is definitely not the cause of its success.

Although there is a lot of freedom and movement between the players, Marcelo in particular has special freedom to go into the middle, at the end of the state champion he scored a goal as a right winger. His replacement in the Libertadores final, Diego Barbosa plays a much more traditional left-back role, without floating, almost scoring the title goal in the 90th minutes.

He coached my Tricolor - São Paulo Futebol Clube - back in 2020 and the results were pretty miserable. We had more than 12 points lead to the 2nd place and he still managed to lose the « Brasileirão » - our Premier League - My opinion is that Mr. Diniz lacks is experience and true knowledge. Time will tell who is right, thanks.
The most underrated player from that team is definitely Fábio. It's been almost 15 years he's one of the best if not the best goalkeeper in Brazil and yet he never got the chance to play in the Seleção. The 7x1 would've never happened with Fábio in goal. The problem with these tactics is that they can't be implemented with players playing in different leagues, that is why it is hard for him to implement it with the national team. The brazilian players playing in Europe are so used to positional football tactics that it is hard to grasp the concepts of Relationalism also he doesn't get enough time with them to train and drill the movements until they can grasp them. After the international break is over they go back to their clubs. That is why, these tactics will never reach the heights of positional play in terms of being implemented by European teams.

He played 4 games only with the National team. He had to let the guys who went to the Cup have their chance and also test others. If Brazil qualifies in third or fourth, doesn't matter, if the football played in the second half of the qualifiers is good. The last 2 times Brazil won the Cup, it struggled to qualify.

There are some key elements that you haven´t talked about: 1) Nino, the captain of the team is another player that will problaby be in Europe very soon. 2) You should hear about the players talking about the training. It´s been said that Diniz puts the reserve squad with 12 players to force the main squad to be very sharp when creating the plays. He made the goalkeeper train his footwork so they could be more efficient when starting the moves. 3) Another detail is that Diniz is a former futsal player. That said, what he does is imagine the field is composed by several futsal courts where he puts more players in order to have more players close to the ball, making difficult for the opponent to defend.
Diniz could in fact in a few years get to coach, say, a Spanish team of the middle ranking ones. It would take him two Seasons to achieve the first four or five.
Another underrated player from the fluminense squad is Jhon Arias. The guy never loses the ball and also has an incredible work rate whilst never getting tired.

I really wish to see more analysis of South American clubs. To show there are some pretty good tacticians in here, Abel Ferreira is a great coach. Renato Gaucho is making a good job turning Luisito Suarez into a playmaker and with a very cheap team.
Agree with all the names you mentioned. But also Tite coaching Flamengo has now ramped up the level. The recent game between Tite's Flamengo and Abel's Palmeiras was a spectacular match of football. Tite may have failed with Brazil, but the man is an excellent coach with two serie a titles, a Libertadores, and Club world cup trophy. Next year, the Libertadores and Brasileirao are gonna be so much more competitive.

After losing two cups he was hired for far below what he is worth, as if losing a world cup meant you are such a terrible coach.... tite's brazil was great (both of them, 2018 and 2022). It just happens that the world cup is the world cup. 82's brazil was magical and didn't win. Johan Cruyff never lifted the trophy either. Anyways, i'm glad we have him on board. Tite is a sound tactician and a very good coach. Now we need to replace some players...that will be the hardest part...2019's glories, you know....
Eu sou brasileiro, optei por escrever em meu idioma mesmo. Acredito que as táticas do Fernando Diniz podem trazer uma contribuição muito importante para o futebol, ela ainda carrega falhas, principalmente falhas defensivas, pois tiram os jogadores de posição e abrem espaços para contra ataques quando perdem a bola. Mas isso pode ser modificado, e cada treinador pode pegar o que mais lhe interessar e aplicar em seu time, bem como Diniz com o tempo pode modificar suas táticas. O ponto mais importante é o esporte evoluir dentro de campo, com novas formas de jogar, priorizando jogadores de bom passe, visão de jogo, nem sempre forte fisicamente, mas bons tecnicamente.
Achei que esse método se encaixa muito bem na filosofia do futebol brasileiro. Este estilo de jogo aproveita a principal vantagem que os jogadores brasileiros têm sobre os jogadores estrangeiros: improvisação e habilidade decorrente de uma rica tradição de dribles de perto através do futsal.
Concordo com o comentario sob o ponto de vista do ataque. Defensivamente, o estilo deixa muito a desejar. Um exemplo foi o jogo contra o Boca, um time muito limitado e sem jogadores com muito dominio de bola mas com muita raca. Eles conseguiram empatar e em boa parte do jogo tomar conta da iniciativa (embora bem limitada). Acredito que o numero de chutes em gol foi bem parelho. Eh por este motivo que a nivel selecao, o conceito tem que ser trabalhado bem mais antes de ser aplicado.

As falhas defensivas acontecem porque os jogadores de meio campo sao lentos. Marcelo toma bola nas costas facil e nao tem idade pra voltar em velocidade, tanto que o Alexsander que cobre ele.
Um LE de velocidade e um meia motorzinho como arrascaeta facilmente resolveriam isso.

One aspect to Diniz' work that I believe is often overlooked is the way he works with the players themselves. The best example of this is John Kennedy himself, who, in the beggining of the year, was at a loan to a smaller club and was about to be let go because of some behavioural issues. However, Diniz kept him in the team and build a trust relationship with him, which enabled him to go from about to scoring arguably the most important goal in the clubs history. Often times nowadays we expect things, and worst of all, people, to just work on the first time around without any adjustment and that's just not the way it goes.

Fernando Diniz often used to go to the high school I studied at to talk with the futsal coach - which was my coach at the time. Hence I talked to him a couple of times but obviously a long long time ago and he was always incredibly kind to me and to the other kids. It happened in Sao Paulo in 2006. I really happy to see he's getting the appreciation he deserves.

Something that other countries tend to not get is the way Brazil played the 4-2-4: Brazil played that style for almost.... 20 years. It consisted of two wingers, a centerfoward and a position that we called "ponta de lança" (spearhead, literally), which was almost a second striker and given to the most skilled attacker, like Pele.
When Diniz made 3 subs, getting John Kennedy, Diogo Barbosa and Lima at the field, Germán Cano backed to the "ponta de lança" position, penetrating the defense and also going back to defend, while John, young, rested and full of personality, got to receive the ball against very tired adverseries.
Diniz style of play not only is getting back the real brazilian style of play, but also rescuing old brazilian traditions and mixing them: most of 50's and 60's videos show very static formations, like the positional players today so adding up the brazilian "casual" football of exchanging positions when necessary makes it seem like not only a ressurgence of "jogo bonito", but a try at "jogo bonito 2.0".

OK, great video, but I want to bring up another approach regarding what you said at 1:20 to 1:45 : Rinus Michels' Dutch team (74 - 78) definitely created new concepts and inspires coaches (directly or indirectly) to this day, just as Cruifjj's teams. But we can't let Brazil's 1970 team out of this conversation.
Due to having four stars who would normally play the same position in a team (Pelé, Gérson, Rivellino and Tostão), legendary coach Zagallo took a revolutionary decision. He moved Gérson back almost to a defensive midfielder and played Tostão as a "falso 9" , which literally means an offensive player positioned on the pitch as a striker but in reality, moves freely out of the box with the main purpose of creating rather than finishing plays. He brought in Jairzinho to play up as a winger instead of putting him at center forward, the position he usually played for his club. And finally, he left Pelé free to play up front, just as Guardiola did MANY, MANY years later with Messi.
Rinus Michels saw this and went one step further, leaving virtually no fixed-position players in his team. This mixture of the Brazilian team of '70 and the Dutch team of '74 ended up culminating in Telê Santana's choices in '82 when he had Zico, Sócrates, Falcão and Éder.
Let's keep In mind that the 1982 World Cup was held in Spain and Pep Guardiola has openly said during interviews that he based some of this ideas on the tactics of that team, which unfortunately ended up losing to Italy and which is the greatest translation of "Joga bonito", the term that you guys from abroad admire so much and that we Brazilians have also adopted after the Nike ads hahaha

Fugir da marcação na lateral é mais simples, já que você só tem um ângulo de 180 graus para se preocupar, jogar no meio você tem que ter atenção 360 graus. Difícil de se adaptar, podemos pegar o Daniel Alves como exemplo, jogou no meio várias vezes, mas nunca rendeu.

Brazil adopted an more positional and defensive stance after Tele Santana defeat on 1982 and 1986 World Cups (1982 squad is regarded as one of the best Brazilian teams ever with Zico, Falcão, Cerezo, Socrares and Junior).

Nice to see a very respectful analysis of Diniz. Yes, Europe has the best players, because they have the $$$$ to hire south americans for example. Copa Libertadores is probably the hardest competition to win, since the money gap between the clubs is not the abyss Europe has with other clubs. There is also the whole atmosphere, the fact that is way harder to keep the elite players since they'll leave for Europe or retire since are veterans.

Thats amazing content!!! As brazilian, Fernando Diniz is not just changing everything we know about football tatics, but also he is changing how we treat football players, clubs and all aspects around our football structure. Besides football coach, he is psychologist and he faces the football world ( which is Brazil is really tough) from a different perspective. If you look for his enterviews he always come up with the importance of support the players, especially mentally, because we know the humble origins of football players in brazil and sometimes this mens are not ready to assume this pressure.
I would say that he is the brazilian Ted Lasso, as he always says, "winning is not important. Important is to be a great man, great husband, dad and son".
Diniz´s tactics haven´t worked on the National team yet, probably because most of the players are so deep into positional play, as most of the squad plays in europe. Vini and Bruno are two extraordinary players, but they haven´t developed that sense of relationism in the squad as much , as they left brazil pretty early and found their path on european football, so the roles on the pitch for them are still pretty much coincident to the positional play. Vini is stuck in the wing while Bruno lays back the game at times. Though, I believe on Diniz´s potential to bring back the Jogo Bonito, he just needs time, just like in the clubs, he always had quick stays at clubs, 9 months max, because results to relationism don´t come quick, so Fluminense believed on him and now they are Libertadores champions.

This style demands a lot of training, I don't think it would work on a national team that trains a lot less together.
Ancelotti is expected to train Brazil after his contract with Real and Diniz will keep 100% on Flu.
Nino is already 26, but he is doing a great job and deserves better then the team in England he is probably going to.
As far as Diniz, he is very stuborn with the players he likes, even though they dont't deliver and he likes the team to pass the ball too much on the defense when the keeper starts the play.

15 years ago, we lost the Libertadores's Final, and today, after this long time, we have our redenption. Our team have a lot of good players like John Arias, Ganso, Marcelo, Cano, and it's a great reason to be happy with the beautiful game that we show to the world. Diniz is a intelligent manager, with good ideas, but he need to improve the defense of his teams, but he achieved it in this year, the play style was very improved, with good central back like Nino and Felipe Melo and awesomes left and right back, Diogo Barbosa/Marcelo and Samuel Xavier.
I love this team and i'm very gratefull for the awesome work of Diniz and Fluminense in this year.

It's not about occupying the same position. It's about keeping a line between players without opposition. Its about creating passing options, opportunities for dummies etc. Thinking about positional play is talking about space, you can draw lines, but you are thinking about area. If you talk about relational play, that's all about the lines, you can talk about the overload in a specific area, but you are always thinking about the lines. Look at the amount of options that everyone have when they have the ball, everyone else gravitates towards them to create more lines of options

Sometimes novelty alone is sufficient to gain an advantage. Only time will determine if this system is a revolution or will be easily counteracted and fades into the annals if history.
At least in the context of Diniz, this isn't novelty, however. Quite the opposite, Diniz has being playing this kind of football from the beginning, and he has been very well known in Brazil for quite the long time. His tactics have evolved, of course, but his essence is still the same.
The reason he is only getting talked about more broadly recently is that this is the first time he's been able to convert his philosophy into titles. Previously, he has been known for building squads that play good football, but we're never quite able to get the top spot in anything.
I know this doesn't necessarily mean this philosophy will be successful at the highest level of football, and I don't even disagree with you. All I'm saying is that, at least in Brazil, the more time goes on it seems that Diniz's relationism is the one ahead of the adaptation curve, not the other way around.
He is developing this system since 2014 at least. It only got better with time. Its not a mere possibility, it's a reality now that Fluminense has won the Libertadores. I dont know if it will ever surpass Guardiola's tactics, for example, but novelty is definitely not the cause of its success.

Total football everyone attributes to Cruyff took a lot of pointers from the style of Jimmy Hogan who coached the amazing Hungarian team with Puskas. Jimmy comes from working class town near Burnley in Lancashire but primarily coached abroad.

Although there is a lot of freedom and movement between the players, Marcelo in particular has special freedom to go into the middle, at the end of the state champion he scored a goal as a right winger.

Great job! Nice of you to explain it so well to people like me who little about tactical studies on the pitch. As a Brazilian I would add a short comment about Fernando Diniz. He coached my Tricolor - São Paulo Futebol Clube - back in 2020 and the results were pretty miserable. We had more than 12 points lead to the 2nd place and he still managed to lose the « Brasileirão » - our Premier League - My opinion is that Mr. Diniz lacks is experience and true knowledge. Time will tell who is right, thanks.

The most underrated player from that team is definitely Fábio. It's been almost 15 years he's one of the best if not the best goalkeeper in Brazil and yet he never got the chance to play in the Seleção. The 7x1 would've never happened with Fábio in goal. Top 5 Brazilian keeper in history with record amount of clean sheets

he was the coach of my team back in 2018 (Athletico-PR) I remember that I liked him but it didn't work cause we didn't have enough talent (he was at relegation when got sacked) but helped Bruno Guimarães become the player he current is, and also the rest of the team, they just used it more pragmatically with a different coach and won our first major international trophy with south american cup (europa league of us), I was at the stadium and my happiest day at club football

The problem with these tactics is that they can't be implemented with players playing in different leagues, that is why it is hard for him to implement it with the national team. The brazilian players playing in Europe are so used to positional football tactics that it is hard to grasp the concepts of Relationalism also he doesn't get enough time with them to train and drill the movements until they can grasp them. After the international break is over they go back to their clubs. That is why, these tactics will never reach the heights of positional play in terms of being implemented by European teams.

I believe that in national team be hard implement, because he not have time for working. But in team inside europe is possible, because in the brazil the teans also playing posicional game, and Diniz implement in taem that for training e not have much dificu.

He played 4 games only with the National team. He had to let the guys who went to the Cup have their chance and also test others. If Brazil qualifies in third or fourth, doesn't matter, if the football played in the second half of the qualifiers is good. The last 2 times Brazil won the Cup, it struggled to qualify.

Não é questao de mais tempo, e sim da intensidade de treinos nesse "mais tempo", coisa que a seleção brasileira é incapaz de oferecer. E sobre as convocações, só André, Nino e possivelmente o John Kennedy servem pra esse argumento, ainda existem outros 23 jogadores acostumados com os outros estilos.

The most important variation that you didn’t mention is having both wingers playing together on the same side. Keno plays 1-2 with John Arias before crossing to Cano. That’s Diniz trademark.

During Boca Juniors Goal, the rignt defensor (Samuel Xavier) was waiting to return for the match on the sideline for almost 1 minute and the referee did not allow him to return. So the deffense was not fully adjusted during the goa. BTW, what a F*** of referee...

You can make another video talking about the great young players that Diniz discover, his degree in psychology and the way he treat his players
There are some key elements that you haven´t talked about:
1) Nino, the captain of the team is another player that will problaby be in Europe very soon.
2) You should hear about the players talking about the training. It´s been said that Diniz puts the reserve squad with 12 players to force the main squad to be very sharp when creating the plays. He made the goalkeeper train his footwork so they could be more efficient when starting the moves.
3) Another detail is that Diniz is a former futsal player. That said, what he does is imagine the field is composed by several futsal courts where he puts more players in order to have more players close to the ball, making difficult for the opponent to defend.
