I am too old to sleep outside in the cold. I used to go to the camp in the winter with my dad. One time it went down to -45C....we had our air tight rockin and could barely keep up. That day it got up to -20. Other places that morning was -50C. I prefer an insulated camp with a big ass wood stove. I offer you the opportunity to come to my camp. It is entirely your choice if you want to. Our camp has an outhouse....sauna bath and we even have power. We have solar panels and deep cycle batteries. It is almost luxury. With no light pollution, the night sky is amazing. Many people comment about this at our camp near Shining Tree.
It’s always completely amazes me that natives made it through winter after winter in these conditions for thousands of years, without any of our modern luxuries that we consider necessities.. only clothes that they made, food that they gathered, shelter that they formed from their surroundings.. no steel knives, iron pots, folding saws.. nothing. friggin amazing
That night sky!!! The drone shots were also beautiful... but that night sky!! The north will always have my heart, always be home. I'm quite jealous of you sir.
the vids and drone are sharp and clean nice and sound to dont know how you do but top ! Execpt underware after somes days i dont change base layers that i let dry on me with a big down parka over , i use the inside parka pockets as a dryer for socks and evently boots liners. " moufflons boots" are so comfy at the evening. you never stop for the pleasur of all of us that like to follow you, good winter
So true, fish are not always in the most difficult to reach places. Simcoe got example has insane fishing pressure but, top notch fishing for some species.
Wow, just dawned on me....all the work you have to do when you get home......like dry out your gear. then the video making which you are ACES at. Thank you soooooooooo much for providing outdoor vids I love to watch!!!
Beautifully shot. Making it look easy. lol. You introduced and sold me on the Draumr. It's a great hammock and my favorite sleep system that I've ever tried. Thank you for promoting Amok. I don't have the Winterlight version of the pad. I have the 3 season Fjol and camped with a low of 27F/-3C but I had to grab my Nemo reflective ccf pad to be comfortable. I was in a 15 degree down bag. Slept perfectly after adding the Nemo pad. I wouldn't go below 32F/0C without the Winterlight for me as a cold sleeper. You inspired me to shoot a little video canoe camping with it on a little creek last month. Amok commented on the video! Thanks for your inspiration and creativity Jon.
Thanks Flackee! So glad to hear that. The winterlight is an awesome pad...blows my mind that it's much warmer yet also significantly lighter than their regular pad. Beautiful footage man, well done!
Hey guys...just wanted to let ya's know, I only found your channel about a month ago..but think I've watched almost all your vids:). My daughter who is 6, watches them with me, and loves seeing a woman who loves to camp and fish as much as she does. Keep up the great videos....we love them. Thanks, Scott
Right on.....thanks for the reply pal, I just read it to her and she said to tell them "we're going to video our camping adventures next year, maybe they'll watch us". Haha. Cheers....nothing but the best for 2021.
That was so pretty. When you were on the lake in the strong wind your voice echoing was so cool. Last night I found a northern lights channel an thought you should make a video of them. Wouldn't that have been something to see from your hammock!
Dude I’m so jealous of you. I live in southwest ontario and getting out ice fishing isn’t much of an option down here right now. Barely any snow if you can believe it! Keep the vids coming!
I live in eastern Ontario and we might have 5 mm,, had none 2 days ago. I posted a picture on Facebook 2 days ago and on Dec 15/2013 and we had 7 foot snow banks.
Lovely winter tripp!!! I miss the snow and ice covered lakes! Here in Gothemburg Sweden we have +5° C and rain and the sky is completly grey...so locking at your video keep my spirit for the outdoors going!!! So keep up posting new ones!!! 🥰🥰🥰
just gotta love Canada , ive traveled trough it once and so want to go back .. thank for all the years content..Its Appreciated, be well and safe you both .. All the best for the holidays Mate ,,
Wonderful night out. The frost on the trees was stunning, picture perfect! Nice long winters slumber, great to have a good long sleep. You needed it for the long haul back out. lol Thanks for sharing. :)
Awesome Jon ,enjoyable watch . Informative , Fun and incredible drone footage of the lake. As cold as a household freezer, yikes ..... Wishing Jon & Erin a great christmas and New year, Treeman.......
Hi Jon. Wow. A true back country angler. You are determined to fish no matter what. Brave to be out in those temperatures. No dressing room needed out there in the middle of nowhere! Lol. Maybe for a wind block though. It’s true that the animals exist out there and seem to be fine. Conditions are brutal to survive. For your sleep system, can you cover or make a pillowcase for the foam matt to keep moisture away from the foot area and would it help keep you any warmer (plus added weight to pack)? Just more crazy thinking I do. Sorry you didn’t catch anything to cook or take back home. Chalk it up to more experience which is a good thing. Thanks for sharing this winter wonderland video. Be safe, well and stay warm.
Thanks a bunch Alice!! Good call on the fabric around the foam pad...I've read that can be effective. For one night I wasn't too worried about a bit of moisture but for longer trips that would have to be a serious consideration
That was one heck of an amazing night sky. The drone footage with the frost on the trees was most spectacular, better than what I’ve seen in Christmas movies on tv. You just never disappoint with your humour either. As long as Erin loves your chicken legs that’s all that matters. Lol. Awesome vid.😘
Very nice winter camping video. I have only been out that cold one time in the South East United States. It is different in the south East Mountains. I fond it really interesting that your cooking on an open fire. Really awesome, keep on camping.
Thanks Brian! Gas stoves can be hard to operate in the cold (though it can certainly be done with the right fuel), but above all, I camp a lot and hate making the waste of the cannisters when there's abundant fuel all around in the boreal forest. Also one less thing to pack :)
For sure, if one owns a hammock primarily for camping in extreme cold, then the under quilt can't be beat. But for 3.5 seasons (or fully 4 in warmer climates), the Draumr is awesome
The ice in Southern Ontario can't come quick enough. If it doesn't get here soon I'm coming up! I love the style of your shots when the camera is far away but zoomed in tightly on something. Really easy to watch. You don't over edit either and rely on music like I do 😂.When you do use music its spot on and so chill. Beautiful video, you could have used that frozen shirt to sail your sled back to the car! Now time to go and stare and obsessively touch my ice fishing stuff for another 3 weeks or so.
Hahah much appreciated Andrew!! I would probably use more music if it wasn't so polarizing...no matter what you choose, it seems like a significant proportion of viewers are gonna hate it. But from an editing perspective, cueing it up to the music is a lot of fun so it's hard to refrain lol
I was expecting you to wear your famous nose mask for sleeping in cold temperature ...😌 A bottle of hot water is good but 2 is better , one at the feet , the second one for cold spot in the upper body . Merci pour la vidéo Jon , toujours un plaisir à regarder
Hahah good memory! I actually used it but too much condensation formed around it, so the frost would touch my nose. I think it would have to be made wider....or maybe it's just a terrible idea lol
Thanks for taking us along! Another great video Jon. Always love the awesome footage an explanations. Also, congrats on recently hitting 30K subs. You should have 300K or more in my opinion.
Have you ever heard of Gregory Alan's song Time Will Tell and That Sea The Gambler. Just thought you might enjoy if not. Thank you very much John for the update and wishing you good health. Thanks again.!
Awesome video! I'm glad you tested out the hammock in sub zero temps as I was really curious how that would work out. I just got my Amok yesterday and now I'm itching to go sleep in it!
Wow what can I say? Cold and very quite I love it. The hammock is the way to go but I would’ve had to be fully covered to keep the wind off of me. Sorry no fish but great lure footage and drone footage. Fun stuff Jon. Stay warm🥶
Hi Jon, thanks for another memorable episode. Wow, camping in those temps! You should have a look at the channel of Erik Normark from Sweden, funny how camping and sledding habits are different between Sweden and Canada. Normark almost always goes on cross country skies. And pulls his sled with two crossed 8' sticks. Groeten from your oma's and opa's country. Michel.
Thanks Michel! 👋 I've seen a few of his vids and he definitely has a great system. The crossed sticks are great because you can use them downhill as well...we might go that direction someday :)
I envy you all that snow, as here in Muskoka we still have far too little to haul a sled or toboggan full of gear through the bush. Thanks for bringing us along with you, Jon. Good tips on keeping warm by the way! Cheers, - Martin
Fantastic video, as always! I'm surprised your "chicken legs" didn't turn blue. Hint: throw the pad over the ridge line to inflate; no dirt to soil or puncture the pad in summer, no snow to get pad damp in winter. I haven't winter camped in 50 years, maybe I'll think about it for next winter.
They're UVEX but I got 'em from a friend so I'm not sure of anything else...I think they're a bit old too. No fog problems and I really like the amber lens...makes winter look a lot warmer.
Never seen anyone before explain so well about changing clothes in the cold and exhibiting such a fine pair of chicken legs it was all positive stuff Jon so thanks for doing that. Please tell me again why you did not consider extending your tarp to the lower half of the hammock surely it must be warmer if you can do this and get it closer to your sleeping surface although I realize it would restrict your stargazing. Thanks for sharing 👍
Hahah yeah it's one thing to be in the cold and then go into a warm car or house, and another to be out there all weekend. Just takes the right gear of course. Thanks John :)
Man Jon, what an amazing video! Gotta commend you on the editing here, such a variety of shots and the timing of each transition was quick, and things kept moving and interesting. Money drone footage, absolutely beautiful colours and views! I'm getting excited for cold tenting...Merry Christmas to you and Erin 🍻
Hi Jon, please count me in for this contest. I have always been a tent camper, and have not ever tried an overnight situation in a hammock. So I’d love to give this a try.
Wow, beautiful. Kudos for low temp hammocking! Lowest temp I slept out with my Amok Draumr is -4°C so far. When you drilled in the ice I though I would see fish for dinner but hot dogs are 👌.
Doubtful that you'll be out in the amok again this season however, "Shug" has a few winter hammock videos that you might be up a tip or two from esp. the frost on the sleeping bag.
Good call Bruce! I've watched a number of Shug's videos and actually reached out to him about how to extend the temperature range of the Draumr. He confirmed what I was thinking with the foam pad (since an under quilt isn't really possible)
@@LostLakes Nice. I do remember him having a video where he discusses how to keep the frost off the sleeping bag. (hence the suggestion). Enjoy the holiday & snow; something we're lacking in the Capital.
Just curious about your sweater jacket. I have one with a liner but it is not windproof. At those temps wouldn't a down parka or a windproof shell be better?
Awesome video once again. This is really making me want to go out this weekend! I'm going to try bringing a sheet of XPS rigid insulation with me this time, hopefully that will keep moisture under my back down.
What would happen if you were to jam some spruce or hemlock branches into your water hole? I'm wondering if you could just pull them out when you needed water.
Now that's a proper cold weather hang. I love the points you mention throughout the video, like change of clothes and moisture as well as the R value and the condensation. Keeping warm at night, less is more, let the sleepingbag do its job. I'm wondering. Why don't you use the sticks at the end of the hammock? In addition I mount the bug mesh to rise the temp inside the Draumr at night. Stay safe, stay outdoors :o) Greetings from Norway
Thanks NOA!! It's another great Nordic product :) I usually do use the sticks and keep them in my pack when I find good ones. But I didn't have any in my pack and just got lazy lol. Great point about the mesh. Cheers my friend!
Mummy is better for the cold, and less bulky to pack so that's what I use, but rectangular is more spacious and comfortable if it's not that cold and you can afford the bit of extra bulk
You're a machine Jon. Just THINKING of thous temps makes my kibbles a bits run and hide lol... I thought for sure you where going to throw some hot water in the air to freeze, or does it need to be colder, idk. I definitely have to get a fish-finder. Do you recommend the one you're using. Well done !.
LOL. Yeah I think it's gotta be -30C or colder for that to work well, but I do wanna try it! Mine is a Garmin Echo 501c with the Garmin portable kit. It has a heavy external battery which lasts a full-day outing if you turn the brightness down. I bought it for paddling and ice fishing, but now only use it for winter. The suction cup stays on the canoe surprisingly well. There are better models for just winter, but it does the job for me. I'd recommend it.
Now you know why the lake is open to fishing for brookies all year round! Where I live (Idaho) brookies are almost treated like a trash fish. Limits for all other trout are zero or 6 fish per day, but it's 25 for brook trout. Thanks for the video. Do you hear wolves much where you canoe/camp/fish in Ontario/
Wow that's shocking! I had a pack of wolves within a minute of my hammock one night a couple of months ago, and another time a couple of years ago. But they didn't come any closer. I've also seen three along the highway here...one had very dark fur and was absolutely massive
I never seen a hammock like this, so I was waiting to see you demonstrate it by laying in it and showing us how it worked. I still don't know how your body balance in it. Cool about the ice fishing and the underwater camera action. But it would have been nice to see you filming yourself sleeping or laying in the hammock. Please do another video just on the hammock.
I just made a video for Amok on winter hammock camping which they'll be posting soon so check out their RUclips channel for that :) I might also post it here
When you drive into these locations are you simply leaving your vehicle on the side of the road or usually a parking lot? Always feels iffy walking away from the vehicle ... lol. What are your thoughts?
Lol it does, and there's always a sense of anxiety about getting back to it, but so far so good. I rarely leave my car on a proper road overnight because it impedes snowplows and could result in a ticket so I'm usually only leaving it if there's a reasonable spot to park
I know you probably pay no attention to the thumbs down . I just dont get it , people dont realize how difficult is to film and camp in those conditions . Sorry i just had to bring it up , your doing a great job .
Greatly appreciate that!! They used to really discourage me. Much less so now, after 3.5 years of doing this. Still, I find it shocking how some could feel so negatively about a video. I watch a lot of YT and rarely use the thumbs down unless it was blatant click bait or offensive. If it's just not my style, I move on. The other thing is it's not very useful feedback...I much prefer a harsh critic in the comments than a vague thumbs down. Anyway, appreciate the support FOFO!
As always, the beautiful drone and underwater shots are so appreciated. Did you bring the nose cone insulation but not show it? Lol. Envious of the snow and ice...sorely lacking here in Michigan. Happy holidays to you and Erin!
Thanks April!! I actually used it here (no footage) but too much frost formed on it and the frost was touching my skin. Need some modifications I think. Happy Holidays down there!
Wow incredible adventure! I've asked before regarding bears but it never once clicked in my head that wolves are also a threat as well. In winter when bears are hibernating, I take it wolves are the biggest threat. You're probably a big target if they pick up your scent from meals... do they ever spook you enough to get nervous? You have nerves of steel my friend! Love the videos as always
Thanks a lot SW! Wolf attacks are incredibly, incredibly rare. The biggest threat is really to pets/dogs out there. If I'm walking on the lake in the dark I do think about wolves though. If a pack converged on me, I'd be done. Can't carry bear spray in these temps either. I've seen a couple of them around here. One was enormous...like on steroids. Seemed to be limping.
Also did you know you managed to take a picture of the andromeda galaxy in that night sky picture. It’s the oldest light in our night sky that can be perceived with the naked eye. 2.5 million light years away..... I know I know I’m a nerd..... hahaha
Winter is a whole other world and you capture it beautifully.
Thanks so much Greg!
100%...it's an incredible feat
That night sky!!! The drone shots were also beautiful... but that night sky!! The north will always have my heart, always be home. I'm quite jealous of you sir.
I'm sure I'll always feel the same way 🙂
I love the awareness you bring to ice safety on your winter fishing trip! Keep it up my friend!!!!
Thanks a lot Marty!!
Shirtsickle 😳😂! My goodness, looks like extra starch at the extreme outdoor dry cleaner lol. Beautiful winter scapes, thanks so much Jon 💜
This is the third time I’ve watched this video and keeps getting better
Magical! Live the Drone shots of the frosty forest. You broke us with the stash- cicle comments. 🤭 Stay safe, and warm!
😜 Thanks Andrea!
Snotsicle lmfaoo that was classic!!! I continue to work through all your videos when I have time. They're all amazing.
Just recently started to watch you & Erin. Love the views & commentary.
Appreciate that Mark!!
the vids and drone are sharp and clean nice and sound to dont know how you do but top !

Thanks a lot Robert! That's a good idea...your body heat can be a pretty good dryer :)
So true, fish are not always in the most difficult to reach places. Simcoe got example has insane fishing pressure but, top notch fishing for some species.
Perfect example. Simcoe is one of the few fishing destinations I miss being the in the north. The lakers and whities through the ice...just amazing
Man ! 2 great videos tonight. Joe robinet and backcountry Angling Ontario. Awesome vid Jon! Great footage! ✌
😁 Thanks Dustin!!
Wow, just dawned on me....all the work you have to do when you get home......like dry out your gear. then the video making which you are ACES at. Thank you soooooooooo much for providing outdoor vids I love to watch!!!
Thanks heaps Scotty!! The editing is a lot of fun but man I wish someone else would dry and clean the gear after every trip lol
Cool trip! Looks like the system held up. Thanks for bringing us along!
Beautifully shot. Making it look easy. lol.

I hear ya Ryan, I grew up in Toronto. Winter is so much colder here, but so much better as well
Another fine job entertaining us young feller. Keep up the good work and the exploring.
Thanks very much Waveyak!

It's been a weird winter here too...fairly mild and not too much snow until today. We're in the middle of 25cm coming down 😬 Thanks Martin!!

Hahah thanks Shane!
Wow the frosted tree drone shots were amazing!

ah so beautiful! I love winter!
That's the spirit!!
SpecTACular country btw!! Love the drone footage...and all that cold camping wisdom and knowledge that just naturally rolls out matter-of-factly.
Thank you for keeping the drone warm & dry so I could get my fix of wonderment. :D
My pleasure! 😬
Wow, Great adventure. Spent many a cold night lookin for the elusive square tail. Well done.

that’s what i like, put on other clothes an hour or two before going to sleep

Hint: throw the pad over the ridge line to inflate; no dirt to soil or puncture the pad in summer, no snow to get pad damp in winter.
I haven't winter camped in 50 years, maybe I'll think about it for next winter.
Hahah thanks CW! Good call :)
The drone shots my goodness!
Awesome lighting in winter when the sun is never too high/harsh :)
Great vid.
Drone footage was spot on 🤙
Thanks Corey :)
Thanks Jon great video for our Saturday night!
Thanks B&C!
Great video Jon
Thanks Stephen :)
What goggles are those? Good? Fog problems? I like the look and amber lenses.
Hahah thanks Paul! The tarp would've helped a bit but it was worth it for the stars 😁
Respect. You only realize how cold it is out there once you camp in it
Hahah yeah it's one thing to be in the cold and then go into a warm car or house, and another to be out there all weekend. Just takes the right gear of course. Thanks John :)
I think this hammok needs a rain cover incorporated instead a tarp... It will be the perfect hammock in my opinion .. greattings
Much appreciated Pete!!!
Hi Jon, please count me in for this contest. I have always been a tent camper, and have not ever tried an overnight situation in a hammock. So I’d love to give this a try.
Well done.
Wow, beautiful. Kudos for low temp hammocking! Lowest temp I slept out with my Amok Draumr is -4°C so far. When you drilled in the ice I though I would see fish for dinner but hot dogs are 👌.
Thanks Mattias! All this weekend needed to be perfect was a fresh brook trout :)
@@LostLakes God Jul and better luck next time! Brook trout is Bäcköring in Swedish 😁
Awesome video.
Thanks Halina!
Thanks Joel! Any luck with the foam?
What would happen if you were to jam some spruce or hemlock branches into your water hole? I'm wondering if you could just pull them out when you needed water.
Hey Jay, they would freeze solid in there. What you can do if there's enough snow is bury it in snow because it insulates so well
Now that's a proper cold weather hang.
Stay safe, stay outdoors :o)
Greetings from Norway
Thanks NOA!! It's another great Nordic product :) I usually do use the sticks and keep them in my pack when I find good ones. But I didn't have any in my pack and just got lazy lol. Great point about the mesh. Cheers my friend!
Not sure about Amok but ONETIGRIS has a Hot Tent for hammock camping in winter.
you recommend a mummy style sleeping bag with this hammoch? do you think a rectangular bag would work well?
Mummy is better for the cold, and less bulky to pack so that's what I use, but rectangular is more spacious and comfortable if it's not that cold and you can afford the bit of extra bulk
Beautiful vid thank u for sharing 💖 ❤
Thank you!
The thermometer comes in XL too in case you're interested 😂 Great video buddy
Lol thanks Sebastian!
So beautiful...oh I long for Canada
Naturalist's paradise :)
@@LostLakes That's great, thanks Jon. I'll use that info to do some research. Cheers
Beautiful place 👍👍
using the bugnet adds a few degrees of warmth.
Fantastic, must be nice just getting out. What was you guess on animal prints at the end there, a fisher??
Sure is! That's my best guess unless it was a mink, but the tracks seemed large
@@LostLakes never heard of a fisher?
@@martinoutdoors6941 oh ya, just never seen one... Yet 🙂
I know I know I’m a nerd..... hahaha
The World needs Nerds and thanks for the info and John that is a cracking image.
If I could point it out I would! But it’s hard over the Tube to do that! Haha
Cool!! Thanks guys! Stars looked good on my monitor but horrible on my big screen dangit
What kind of drone is that? its so compact i love it.
DJI mavic mini :)
Im honestly impressed how much you film in the cold, cuz it's hard! 😅
Hahha thanks Vee...the batteries really hate it
@@LostLakes ive discovered that this year 😅
Hello from Wisconsin
Burr looks fun enjoyed the video
Thanks Bryan! 👋
