I'm surprised to see you talk about this so abruptly. Hyper Light Drifter is one of my most favorite games of all time (and one of the most underrated). So glad to see you enjoyed it as well.
Thomas Corley Apparently it has, actually. My bad. Though I haven't really seen a whole lot of people talk about it mere months after its release, and its playerbase is pretty small. I just feel like the hype died down a bit too quickly. Also, fun fact: HLD was the first game I bought on Steam and I am still very satisfied with my purchase. Watching this kinda makes me want to play it again.
Thomas Corley I guess. But games like Cuphead, Undertale, Hollowknight, A Hat in Time, Celeste, etc seemed to have gotten enough attention to fuel further interest even after their release dates. Then you have games like Hotline Miami(1&2), Shovelknight, Cavestory, Super Meat Boy, BoI, Battleblock Theatre, Castle Crashers, etc which, despite their indiegame status, are games people NEVER forget. I just think HLD deserves a spot somewhere among those ranks.
Didn't even know this video existed ! Awesome 🙌 some of the influences for this soundtrack : Ravel, Debussy & Satie (French Impressionism), Miles Davis, Tool, Chrono Cross/Trigger, Zelda, Souls Boss Music and yes Panacea is totally inspired by Impressionism / Claire de Lune : ) 6:52 the music does usually change between combat and exploration, just wanted to point out 😅
This game is In my top 5 favorites of all time. It's beautiful, addicting , and captivating. No other game makes me feel this much..... maybe hollow knight.....idk
Hyper Light Drifter was a very gorgeous game, in its form of art sound track and design. I think most to all of what the Hyper Light Drifter goal and ambition was is to reflect how the creator feels and deals towards his sickness and its such a beautiful way of conveying this distress to your game in the form of so many masterpieces mashed together at once to make hld its so good I love hld
Clair de Lune is my favorite piece of all time and the MOMENT I heard Panacea I knew what it was inspired by. Both are incredibly beautiful pieces and both just make me feel like I exist, in like, the most genuine way possible.
sure play panCEA WHY DONT YOU I DONT NEED TO KEEP MY TEARS INSIDE MME9JIFOJWNFLF Seriously though Hyper Light Drifter is probably my favourite game of all time. It was largely inspired by it's creators heart condition, and with that in mind some scenes just... killed me.
Rorik Savant yep. I cried at the end of the game and almost every time I listen to and play Panacea because of the story behind it. HE JUST DEFEATED HIS FEAR OF DEATH AND NOT HIS DISEASE AGHHHH
Real talk, you always manage to do something off the wall in your videos while effectively getting your point across and/or leaving the impression on the audience that you want to leave, and this is no exception, thank you for the good content.
This video was freakin fantastic and made me understand why I love this OST so much! I absolutely love Claude Debussy, so that makes a lot of sense now.
4:30 such an unironically amazing poetic description and connection made here. Amazing video, I came back to re watch it after a while and you did just such an amazing job dude :)
Thanks for doing this video. I always thought that why no one does video on how impressive the hyper light drifter's soundtrack is and the game it self is insanely good. It is one of the best gaming experience I had in my life. My day is never complete without listening to this soundtrack. Nice video, keep it up.
I love that your outro is Jack Stauber, he's so amazing I've been listening to him since pop food. And I loved this video too. It really did help understand why the visuals and music can connect in a game and result in a whole set of emotions. Really good work, keep it up!
Woow, this was fantastic! I love seeing videos on hld, especially meta analysis of things like design and music, so this was a great thing to see in my recs. Plus, you made this video really entertaining as well as informative!! Liked and subbed ouob
I always appreciate your videos. They're strange and interesting, but usually have some sort of main point that always gets successfully relayed to us (the audience) no matter what weird occurrences... occur.
I heard the soundtrack for this game before actually knowing anything about it or playing it. But after listening, I immediately decided to buy the game, and never before have I found a game with such beautiful synergy of art, music and gameplay, as well as the abstract sense of story that you, as the player, get to interoperate for yourself, that ultimately makes an amazing mix of emotion while playing. This is one of the most unique and beautiful games I've ever played. I love it
Its impressionist music, but it still keeps a sense of call and response, like a conversation where you don't response right away, rather than a convo where the responses don't make sense.
As a portuguese citizen, I can confirm that at 5:20 sage is definitely speaking portuguese. Nah, jk I didn't understand a word he said. Great video btw! Finally someone actually discussing HLD's soundtrack! It's probably my favorite videogame ever made, and I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. Subbed!
Almost positive that the song is called Gymnopédie no. 1 It does sound A LOT like Unlabeled, though (I think that Unlabeled took its inspiration from this song)
6:59 Ok ok, those frogs that you're killing are in the process of committing genocide towards mouse people that inhabited the lake area. I made it a point to murder ever last frog I could find.
Gen·o·cide: noun the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. Actually it's pretty clear that the frogs are an invading tribe that moved into the ruins, killed off every mouse or otter they could find, impaled them on pikes and skinned them for their fur. Whether or not they killed fun is a moot point, they murdered an entire population of one species. We a name for that, it's called Genocide.
It's surprising how much hate I felt for them. The only other characters in any fiction that have ever inspired such animosity in me are Crusadermon from Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Digimon Story: Hacker's Memory (she's a manipulative, cruel, sadistic bitch) and Tigerstar from the Warriors book series when he took over Riverclan.
When I listen to the Hyper Light Drifter OST, I always picture the beginning until the possible end within seconds. An empty atmosphere, to a rock, to a volcanic planet, to an oceanic planet, to a paradise planet, to the split of continents to the rise of civilizations, to the fall of civilizations. Then I imagine Earth without sentient life. Dominated by nature.
Funny how continuous the panace and Luna turned out to be. As if the author made up a sort of continuation a musical sequel I think you peaked my interest I hope you can stay as impressive to your new subscriber
In my opinion HLD is perhaps one of the single greatest video games ever made. I can't think of any interactive experience that made me feel quite like this game did. I'd say it easily deserves the same prestige as Cave Story, Shovel Knight and Cuphead, etc. HLD is about as perfect as I think a vidja game can be.
and it happens to be that i noticed a similarity with Clair de lune, since its one of my fav songs. glad i wasn't wrong or at least wasn't the only one that noticed :)
When I first played HLD I immediately thought about Debussy. At the beginning of this video I knew that it was coming and after 3:12 minutes I jumped "Yeah I knew it!!". Sorry I know that sounds childish but... sooo satisfying! ;)
I'm surprised to see you talk about this so abruptly. Hyper Light Drifter is one of my most favorite games of all time (and one of the most underrated). So glad to see you enjoyed it as well.

My favorite game is 2002 the hobbit
My favorite too

Real talk, you always manage to do something off the wall in your videos while effectively getting your point across and/or leaving the impression on the audience that you want to leave, and this is no exception, thank you for the good content.
SpaceyTwinkles it’s true. you’re a great speaker, mika. a modern story teller.
Too bad he only talked about one song and didnt even mention who made it.
After watching this video, I've now learned that Hyper Light Drifter is kinda nice. Thank you Mikasauce guy for sharing the niceness of this game.
For anyone wondering the background music towards the beginning is Erik Satie's gymnopide #1
This video was freakin fantastic and made me understand why I love this OST so much! I absolutely love Claude Debussy, so that makes a lot of sense now.

"musical phrases as if they are stray animals fumbling around trying to find their way home and failing" WOO
Hyper Light Drifter is so criminally underrated so it's nice seeing more people get into it. Great video!
So glad to see Hyperlight Drifter get some of the recognition it deserves. A true gaming masterpiece.
I always appreciate your videos. They're strange and interesting, but usually have some sort of main point that always gets successfully relayed to us (the audience) no matter what weird occurrences... occur.
HiLo is such a great album dude, I've been listening to it all week. Nice video btw.
I watched this video many times, i really appreciate this, thank you buddy 🙂
This game ruined me as a person. Everything about it is perfect and beautiful
these videos are really starting to pressure me to do something good in my life. damn you, and your good content.

>talks about hyper light drifter
>jack stauber in background at the end
ive subscribed
I have the whole lossless soundtrack on my phone dude, I'm so happy to see it being appreciated
Clair de Lune is my favorite song of all time. All I want for Christmas is to hear you appreciate it even more
Like Clair de lune was all I need.
I heard the soundtrack for this game before actually knowing anything about it or playing it. when a youtuber you love suddenly makes a video on a game you love
I am happy that you also like this music and that you made a video about it
“I’m not gonna bore you with a nerdy musical analysis.” Is that not what we’re here for?
Wow. Finally. This game is getting the some of the attention it deserves!
I will forever love Hyper light drifter, I hope Heart Machine one day releases a new game eventually. Thank you for this
Welp there are it’s solar ash it’s in the same universe as hyper light drifter and the music is done by the same guy!
Its impressionist music, but it still keeps a sense of call and response, like a conversation where you don't response right away, rather than a convo where the responses don't make sense.
Glad I found you, the videos you do on ost's are amazing
Yet again, you touch the spots in my heart
I can't believe this amazing man made a video oft favourite game
As a portuguese citizen, I can confirm that at 5:20 sage is definitely speaking portuguese.
Nah, jk I didn't understand a word he said. Great video btw! Finally someone actually discussing HLD's soundtrack! It's probably my favorite videogame ever made, and I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. Subbed!
It seems like you put a lot of work into your videos. You deserve way more subs and views. Keep it up!
yeeah hyper light drifter (and Jack Stauber in the outro! awesome)
HLD is one of my favourite games of all time (if not my favourite ever), and this video was absolutely 👌👌👌👌
thanks for the vid man. keep it up
i come back and watch this vid every 4-5 months i swear
finally this game deserves so much more attention
This video is really great, the game doesn't have enough attention
The music at 1:50 gave me flashbacks
Darkelf ikr I don't know the song name though
WTF IS SONG I LOVE IT SO MUCH
I've been wondering too
Lol nah
Almost positive that the song is called Gymnopédie no. 1
It does sound A LOT like Unlabeled, though (I think that Unlabeled took its inspiration from this song)
i like the side characters and stuff, but id like more of the nerdy and «over analytical» stuff. anyhow a great video as always.
roock89 is a stone I have a feeling he'd get bored without them. It seems like he likes to put in the silly stuff as a quick distraction.
thanks for giving recognition to a really awesome game!! awesome video my dude~
Most underrated game of all time
One of my all time favourite games and it deserves way more praise than it gets. Truely a perfect game
6:59 Ok ok, those frogs that you're killing are in the process of committing genocide towards mouse people that inhabited the lake area. I made it a point to murder ever last frog I could find.
Zamiel 7
Actually it wasnt nessicerily genocide. pretty sure the toads were just killing the otters for fun.
Gen·o·cide:
noun

Big bad toad for the win XD
I fall asleep to this ost regularly
When I listen to the Hyper Light Drifter OST, I always picture the beginning until the possible end within seconds. An empty atmosphere, to a rock, to a volcanic planet, to an oceanic planet, to a paradise planet, to the split of continents to the rise of civilizations, to the fall of civilizations. Then I imagine Earth without sentient life. Dominated by nature.
I was considering this game already, now I am much more interested.
When I first beat the game. I cried hard. And I still do and its the only thing that has made me cry
This is probably my favorite game now that I think about it. I love practically everything about it
I hope disasterpiece sees this! Amazing job guys
Panacea makes me cry every time actually because of the story behind the ending. It’s so emotionally arranged it’s crazy.
Panacea always gives me goosebimples when i hear the first few key strokes.
Such a masterpiece! Definitely best game of 2017!
Every time I hear another commentator I get reminded how great you are
the meta-narrative in this video deserves an emmy award
This game is my favourite game of all time. I highly recommended this game.
I get a Led Zeppelin, Ten Years Gone and In the Light, vibe from Hyper Light Drifter
to be honest, impressionism and impressionist artists's inspirations are literraly EVERYWHERE in pop-culture, and especially video games
Absolute genius soundtrack.
Wow this video is awesome but for some reason youtube did not notificate me about it
I love this soundtrack
Funny how continuous the panace and Luna turned out to be.
As if the author made up a sort of continuation
a musical sequel
I think you peaked my interest
I hope you can stay as impressive to your new subscriber
Pana-see-ah not panachea. Nitpicks aside it's a fantastic video.
In my opinion HLD is perhaps one of the single greatest video games ever made. I can't think of any interactive experience that made me feel quite like this game did. Hell yeah, Hyper Light Drifter is an amazing game.
Woah Mika is that Jack Stauber I hear?
I still play this game it's fricken awesome
There is another inspiration, the last general in the ost is surprisingly similar to some of the themes in dark souls
can't even listen to that final song after the games ending, I am not equipped to deal with these emotions.
Coming back to this video, i think i should pick up Hyper Light Drifter again considering i never finished it. Thank you.
i love this game i love this sound track
I think you'll like Furi
loving the minecraft soundtrack btw
When I first played HLD I immediately thought about Debussy. At the beginning of this video I knew that it was coming and after 3:12 minutes I jumped "Yeah I knew it!!". Sorry I know that sounds childish but... sooo satisfying! ;)
I'd watch an entire animated series, animated movie, maybe even an anime film, scored by Vreeland.
nice Cunk at the end also nice video at the... whole video
HLD is amazing. One of my favorites
This game was sooo amazing. I'm gonna replay it in a few years woth the other character
