This game is releasing this Thursday on Nintendo Switch! It's also already available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One if you haven't had a chance to pick it up yet! -Mike
I agree 100% that we need to experience mistakes and failure so that we can learn from it. Video games taught me this important lesson before I even step out into the society. I'm curious about your take / review / opinion on Hollow Knight though now that you review HLD.
Hyper Light Drifter is one of those rare games that only comes around once in a blue moon like Hollow Knight, Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. It’s truly special and touched my soul, and reminded me not only that games are works of art like renaissance paintings but also why I became so passionate about them as a kid, and why I’m still just as passionate about them today as an adult in his mid twenties.
@@gangstasteve5753 Hotline Miami, Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Cuphead, Ori and the Blind Forest, Ico, Undertale, Little Nightmares. These are some of my favorite indie/niche
The first time I played it, it was like having something I can only describe as a spiritual experience. Everything was so surreal and hauntingly beautiful in a way I don't have the words for.
I understand this on a strange level. For me, when I tried to break down what is was about this game that resonated so deeply with me, my clearest thought was that it felt just like my dreams
I played through this game without knowing the creator’s backstory or details on it’s Kickstarter campaign. I could definitely feel that the story told was deeply personal. I felt like its creator was speaking to me. Only art can do that. This is art of the highest form, and always refer it to others as a prime example and proof that video games have transcended from being simply an entertainment-centric medium to a platform that can provide meaningful experiences.
I haven’t played this game yet, but heard the music in this video for about 2 minutes, and turned it off because I don’t want any more spoilers (minor or not) for this game. Can’t believe I haven’t played this...
This is hands down one of my favorite games of all times. It has a combination of things that make it perfect for me: it has absolutely NO FAT, nothing in the game is for mere exposition or seems out of place. Everything it does, it does deliberately and has meaning. The combination between the gameplay, visuals and music make it a masterpiece imo. Also something really interesting to mention is that the game originally played at 30 fps, something that put a few players off, but they worked their asses off and took it to 60FPS (something that requires remaking a lot of animations and having to work against the game engine). This is really a show of true artwork and passion, I can't believe so many people missed it.
HLD is one of my all time favorites. I'm a sucker for the science-fantasy style. But most of all, the minimalism adds so much to my enjoyment of this game. No white noise is there to obscure the atmosphere, gameplay, and storytelling. And I truly feel like I'm exploring a whole new world when there's no hand holding nor exposition. Just let me see it for myself. I have the game on PC, but I am more than willing to double dip on the Switch port. I want HLD everywhere with me so I can share with friends and family an experience I deeply care about.
And the lore is actually very deep and lots to debate about for a game that tells a story with literally no words, (you can actually translate the in-game language and read the obelisks in the areas)
What a beautiful game. I believe every dev puts a piece of themselves in the game they're working on, but I see it so much more in indie games. As they're not limited by the pressure of AAA expectations. I had no idea about the creators heart condition and to see him express that in his creators is sinister beautiful. Also, I cannot agree with your more on communication. I love when games find a unique way of story telling. I'm currently playing Inside and so far no dialogue but as you play you're clearly piecing the story together and it's amazing. No words needed.
@@ResonantArc Inside is AMAZING. (Gonna beat it tonight) And I plan on picking up Limbo as well! These games NAIL creepy atmospheres. I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on both games one day!
Bought HLD at launch. For the next couple of weeks, every time I thought about the game, I teared up. It’s as if Heart Machine made the game just for me. Great video. Thanks for reminding me how much I love this game.
We should put this game in a vault that will survive after thousands of years when humanity is gone and Aliens come to dig our corpses - this game will communicate with them perfectly.
That writing, voice acting and editing was absolutely fenomenal. Just subbed!! Thanks for the experience. I completed the game on normal and just loved it! Tried on hard mode but.. jesus.
I was looking for Solar Ash Kingdom videos and I found this. HLD is, like a lot of others have said in the comments, one of my favorite games I've ever played, sometimes feeling like it transcends being just a game. I'm very excited for their next project.
I'm glad to see more and more youtubers covering this game. It really deserves more attention and with all respect to legendary games like the zelda franchise, gta san andreas, dark souls, half life and doom, this is my favourite game of all time. I hope there will be an expansion or a sequel in the future but I doubt we will ever see it.
you can only experience your first playthrough of this game once :( i love this game so much, it will always hold an inseparable connection with my heart
I played this game back in 2016. I focused more on gameplay instead of story, I ended up dropping it before I finished and came back a year later. This time though I noticed a ton of things I never noticed in game and outside of the game. The story of the creator of this game I think is just as important as the game itself. You really need to know why he made this game in order to appreciate the art it presents. He is really an inspiration. He didn’t let the spontaneous inevitability of his demise bring him to submission and wait for his final day, he got up when this thing pushed him down, he said fuck it and made a legacy to be proud of.
HLD is my favorite game--hands down. You hit every nail on its head in why I appreciate this game as much as I do. I've logged 50+ hours in it, I've played through it probably 10 times over, I've grabbed every single achievement and enjoyed every minute of it, and I found almost every single gearbit on my own (after spending so much time combing over the same areas, it became more tedious than anything, and caved into searching the last 5-6 gearbits online). Playing this game reignited my love for videogames, and inspired me to pursue what I never thought I was good enough to do. Thank you for such a beautifully concise overview of my favorite game, your words show every bit of heart for the game as its creators.
I backed the KS campaign after watching the demo video and knew right from the jump that this game would be special. There is a sense of wonder and discovery here that is incredibly difficult to capture, and when I completed the Drifter's journey, I felt like I had completed something special in much the same way as I felt when watching Crono and Marle drift away with the balloons through the night sky back in the 90's. I bought this game on every platform and the physical release on PS4 to help show my support to Alex and the Heart Machine team, and I will do so again on the Switch, which - until this video - I didn't know was coming. This is especially great because I had been looking forward to the Vita release for play on the go, which was eventually scrapped. I hope a physical copy materializes as well. This was a wonderful video, and a great channel!
I have been obsessed with this game since I started playing it when it was released for Nintendo Switch. Previously, I was already in love with the soundtrack, which I spent about a year listening to before ever playing the game. I've been looking for reviews or analyses of the game that capture what I find so amazing and powerful about it, and I have found it in this video. Thank you.
OH MY GAWD I CANT STAND IT ANYMORE... your vocabulary is SO ACURATE and carefully chosen. WHAT THE FUCK MAN THESE METAPHORAS ?!?!?! you really touched MY HEART with your video.
Glad you put the spotlight on this one, such an amazing experience with this game, incredibly immersive with it's minimalistic approach. Absolutely loved it on PC.
This video was so well written, you did a great job packing each sentence with meaning, and really conveying of the feeling of the game. It was concise, but you also left just enough breathing room for the game’s art and music to sink in. Definitely a video WELL worth the wait ^~^
It's been a year since I finished the game, and man you reminded me what I love of it and more, hands down for such an amazing video, I think I'm gonna replay it just beacause of how much your video resonated with me
Speaking of passion I have to say that you have a ton of it and it really shows. I came to this channel to see which final fantasy I should play first after XV. I stayed for the amazing content and love you pour into these vids. Keep on making amazing content like this.
Disaster peace is the best modern indie style music composer, he has done movie soundtracks too like the suspense thriller It Follows. Look over his band camp page and it’s staggering how many games he did. I interviewed him years ago on this channel here and it was my first interview with someone notable that opened the door for me not just for interviews but just to ask questions even if the answer seems unlikely. This game is fantastic and Richard’s contribution really wrapped it all together. It’s an intense game with a sweeping soundtrack that often times can be a juxtaposition so soothing that the chaos on screen feels more like ballet than war.
This game gave me the Tom Haverford thing of having an emotional reaction as you look at a piece of art. Not to mention the grin dark moments, like, yea happy neon colors but as you look deeper this world is ravaged by war thay destroyed the west, racism that destroyed the east and got the otters killed, religious fundamentalism that destroyed the north and had so many bird eggs destroyed that were yet to be hatched and technocracy that destroyed the south and the world of hyper light drifter world
I followed this game throughout its development and sadly was unable to get it as I didn’t have proper hardware or a console to play it on. Needless to say, its announcement for the Switch made me ecstatic. For as little as I’ve played this game, this video is a fantastic summation of why it’s special. Excellent work, as always.
I played this game in the beginning of 2018. Hyper Light Drifter is my second favorite game, only beaten by Hotline Miami, but just by an inch. Its a life experience, and a life changing one at that. Where Hotline Miami defined my style, way of living and being, Hyper Light Drifter gave me hope for a future in my life, as before that, I wouldn't allow myself to go beyond 30 years, because of mental conflicts. This game showed me art, and it made me believe that I could show art to others.
Hyper light drifter was the game that really got me into indie games. I had played a few indies before, but I never truly appreciated indie games until I played hyper light drifter. Not only is this game good, but I discovered many other good games too thanks to it
The way you construct your reviews seems like another piece of art to me, an amazing blend of commentary, gameplay and music. Fantastic review, as always!
This game blew me away. It convinced me of the potential for indie gaming and after playing it I started diving into so many others. It makes me want to make my own games. It's one of my all time favorite games and I can't wait to play the definitive edition on switch.
I have had the PS4 version for a while now but have been unable to finsh it,I adore the soundtrack so I will be picking this up again on Switch and I think this time I will be successful in playing all the way through. Your video alongside with the Video Game Story Time's video on the creator have filled me with a desire to reach the end. Thank you for such a beautiful video on an amazing game.
I may not have gotten every single achievement in hyper light drifter, but it still holds as my third or second most favorite game of all time, and as somewhat of a game collector, that's saying a lot. Transistor will always be my number 1 absolute favorite game, but hyper light drifter comes in close, along with Hacknet, and followed by Bastion and Fez. Disasterpiece's music plays a big role for me, even though I love the combat mechanics and the hand crafted world and the attention to detail and the lack of a need to collect every last thing, the music is my favorite part.
Hyper Light Drifter Has been one of my favorites for awhile now. I first played it on pc, and now I get to enjoy a whole new experience on the switch, since, I'm actually using controller this time XD. Special edition doesn't really seem to have added much, but I'd still have bought it special edition or not. Hyper Light Drifter is very beautiful game, it has such an immersive vibe about it, Playing it almost feels like reading a book. You interpret everything your way, as you play you feel like you are observing the Drifter, and you feel his struggle. It's almost like you know what he is feeling, as if he were a real person. It's kinda funny, as the Drifter shows no emotion for most of the game. I totally understand what you are saying, it describes how I feel about Hyper Light Drifter perfectly. Amazing vid.
Picking this up on the Switch for sure! I was already sold when you talked about it on the podcast months ago, but now I'm even more excited to play it for myself! Great video as always Mike! =)
Here's a curious story around this game... It strikes me very strongly from a creative standpoing myself, im an aspiring artist of sorts, mainly working superficially on game art assets and animations, but i can also have projects of my own... HLD landscape and post apocalyptic setting filled with cryptic mystery is on point with the tone i had in mind for my own project... So.. I bought Hyper LIght Drifter, the physical limited release for ps4 that comes with a buch of really nice goodies. But... Haven't opened it, or played it yet, even tho i have full access to the game on steam through shared library... Its like... I want the right moment, with the right company (whoever would appreciate binging a zelda like on coop). Also, knowing the story behind the creative process of HLD was quite interesting and in many ways relateable. Looking forward to playing it someday, even tho i have it next to me, sealed. Will like the video, but won't even watch it XD.
sweet didn't realize it was an action rpg it makes me that much more excited to play it also really nice to know about the creator's condition really contextualizes the game for me and helps me appreciate it more
I love this game. Music, gameplay, story. Every encounter is tough but not impossible and once you finish a tough boss or area you feel like a badass. I can't recommend it enough to anyone who hasn't played it. I wish it was a bit longer, though.
Just finished the game an hour ago and saw this! What a fantastic game! It was darker than I thought and the music is so brilliant. I explored pretty thoroughly but only managed to get a single key. Time to go back through and see what I missed.
I love this game, and I have to say that (thou I understand this is a deep analysis) this is the best review I ever seen for HLD. You pinpointed all the elements I find special about this game. Thx 4 dat, pal.
Crazy timing! I just platinumed Hyper Light Drifter last night. More and more I’m able to say with certainty that HLD is my favorite game since the JRPG classics I grew up with (FFVII, P3). I love the story of HLD because is focuses on an easy-to-understand central conflict inspired by Alx Preston’s lingering mortality, yet there’s room in the lore for the player to interpret and self-insert. Having just completed the game without dying I was surprised with how engaged I was with the combat and it showed me how tight the mechanics truly are. To top it off, the game is a masterpiece in visual and audio design. There’s a reason I try to get all my friends to buy HLD.
My favorite game was Journey. It spoke to my soul in a way I never imagined without saying a word. The world and atmosphere were so tangible and beautiful and it made me feel something I can't describe with words. Hyper Light Drifter is my new favorite game and for the same reasons.
im not one for games with combat in them tbh. it's just so stressful for me. but hyper light drifter has this utterly unique quality to it. like even though the fighting can be frustrating as hell, I still enjoy it so much. the aesthetic is beautiful. you can tell how much passion went into this. it's such a good game (and I'm terrible at writing this sort of thing)
This game, along with hotline miami, changed my life. They helped me when I needed, they knew what I needed. You can say that, hotline miami changed my way of being, and hyper light drifter changed my way of thinking.
This has become one of my favorite games ever. I play it annually, I can't help it. It seems unlikely that Heart Machine will continue on, due to the founder's condition, but this was a lighting in a bottle masterpiece. I'm hoping to make a "Drifter-like" game in the future, but I don't know how I'll be able to do any of the facets of this game as well as this game has.
Finished the game twice and loved it since I first played but payed more attention to the story the second time, gotta admit I almost give up on some bosses but the glory of killing them is worth it. great game would recommend it any day.
Hyper Light Drifter is one of the most incredible games I've ever played. Definitely goes in my top 10 games of all time. It's one of the few gaming experiences I've had where I could feel that the game was a personal expression of its creators.
I bought this on steam a couple of years ago, and wanted to like it so so much for all the reasons you enumerate but just couldn't get in to it. I may have to give it another shot.
Well for me... I remember talking about some steam games I was interested in with a friend about two years ago and Hyper Light Drifter and Hollow Knight were two of them. HLD at least had from what I had seen, featured a greater range of color and varied environments. Has gorgeous pixel art and zany high speed action that was really to me. Unfortunately I totally forgot about it, but hearing you inform us about the Creator and his struggle I think I'll be picking it up this time.

This is one of if not the best video you've ever done. Amazing job man.
You should talk to the game's sound designer Akash Thakkar. He's got a channel on RUclips.

Not Bob Saget dark souls is terrible and filled with bullshit.

Thank you for this video. HLD is such a great game and your video was kind of uplifting.
This is one of my favorite videos on gaming I've ever seen.

For a while I tried to find the people who beat him up around town. I wanted to help him out, poor guy
Oh nice! I feel the same way. This game 'feels' like the classics I grew up with. It perfectly captures the spirit of the SNES era.
This game moved me so much.
I cried at the end
this game has stuck with me ever since ive played it. my music and game ideas have been changed forever.
My favorite game was Journey. It spoke to my soul in a way I never imagined without saying a word. The world and atmosphere were so tangible and beautiful and it made me feel something I can't describe with words. Hyper Light Drifter is my new favorite game and for the same reasons.
Love the new video format, keep up the great work!
Love love love this masterpiece of a game. Great video man
Fucking love Hyper Light Drifter. The atmosphere is amazing and the combat is fulfilling.
im not one for games with combat in them tbh. it's just so stressful for me. but hyper light drifter has this utterly unique quality to it. like even though the fighting can be frustrating as hell, I still enjoy it so much. the aesthetic is beautiful. you can tell how much passion went into this. it's such a good game (and I'm terrible at writing this sort of thing)
as a backer of this game, it lived up to the hype and the long long wait. it was hard in some places and beautiful in all the places
Great review couldn’t agree more! This game is border line perfection
Really good review/analysis!
Keep up te good work
Wonderful retrospective. Makes me want this game now!
This game, along with hotline miami, changed my life. They helped me when I needed, they knew what I needed. You can say that, hotline miami changed my way of being, and hyper light drifter changed my way of thinking.
Dude, if hotline miami changed your way of being I'm kinda scared of you...
Your video inspired me to get this game. Thanks for the recommendation.
One of my all time favourite games. Happily playing again on Switch!
Dude your writing is insane, great video
This game is one of the best games ive played, deeply thankful to have been able to play it and be contemporary with my lifetime
Finished the game twice and loved it since I first played but payed more attention to the story the second time, gotta admit I almost give up on some bosses but the glory of killing them is worth it. great game would recommend it any day.
this and hollow knight are two of the best games this decade. The music still haunts me, everything about it really
Hyper Light Drifter is one of the most incredible games I've ever played. Definitely goes in my top 10 games of all time.
It's one of the few gaming experiences I've had where I could feel that the game was a personal expression of its creators.
Going to be picking this up for the Switch next week. Been wanting to play it for a while now but i completely forgot about it till now
I bought this on steam a couple of years ago, and wanted to like it so so much for all the reasons you enumerate but just couldn't get in to it.
Unfortunately I totally forgot about it, but hearing you inform us about the Creator and his struggle I think I'll be picking it up this time.
this is a great video! one of your best imo.
Thanks, Rusty! I've been trying to adjust my style a little bit and I think I'm finding what works best for me.
Hyper Light Drifter and Transistor are 2 of the best games that I've played in the last 10 years. I hope more games could be this personal and unique
I'm stoked to finally play Transistor on the Switch as well!
Great fetching video! Will definitely check this game out
I get chills on every single note of the opening scene
I was late to the HLD party but it's definitely a new all-time favorite. Essential, and essentially perfect.
Ive only completed about 1/4 of the game so far. and im allready debating wether or not this could be my favorite game of all time
I adore this game, the art, gameplay, and soundtrack.
Thank you. You've pointed what is essencial.
I finished this game a couple of years ago on my PC. And bought the game again on my ps4 at 70% off... I regret nothing.
One of the best indie games to date, surely in my top 3 indies.
I got the game from Steam before the switch port and it is so good. Highly recommended
Aww man every game you talk about Mike makes me really want to go play it, eventhough I have no money. 😭 But this was an awesome video.
I bought this game on switch and i can definitely say that it was worth the buy. Hyper Light Drifter was great.
