The moment Emma doesn’t hear Liv because she’s listening to music, that hits so much harder if you remember Emma’s comment in the beginning: We don’t run with iPods because they’re for people who can’t be alone with their own thoughts. Liv is running after Emma, shouting her name, but Emma is so upset about their fight she’s trying to drown it all out, unable to cope with her own thoughts.

What I never understood about the plot is that, marion st claire could have just called the other woman that came after them and told the, the assistant made a mistake and her’s was supposed to be the 6th. That could have been such a simple fix, but you know… the movie needed a plot 😂

Yes! Considering the venue is apparently capable of holding 2 weddings on the same day and she knew they were each others maid of honors she should’ve rearranged the other bride who reserved it after them. 😒 Also some venues can schedule two weddings on the same day. Another thing w/ Emma is that she was rlly looking forward to pleasing her mom by wearing her wedding dress. When Emma asks “are you happy?”, Emma’s mom then replies “I’ll be happy even if you get married in a brown paper bag, this is your day.” You can see that Emma has a hint of sadness in her eyes bc even on her wedding day, she was still trying to please someone when in the end, that person (her mom) just wanted her daughter to be happy. Emma’s sentiment was very sweet, but it almost felt like she did it for nothing bc she should have done what she herself wanted for her wedding day and not trying to please someone else.
Her mom was very sweet tho! No hate intended to her at all. But you can tell how Emma was in a sense “a people pleaser” like how Liv said earlier in the film

Around the 44:25 mark, earlier in the movie, when they were jogging together, Liv asks Emma why they can’t have iPods(I think) and listen to music while running and Emma responds by saying something along the lines of “because people who run and listen to music can’t be alone with their own thoughts”. So that scene where Liv is shouting her name is a callback to that moment because Liv knows Emma to be a non-music gal and thinks she’s just blatantly ignoring her, and Emma is listening to music as she runs because she can’t be alone with her thoughts, or at the very least doesn’t wanna think about anything in that moment.

Emma with her music and her comment about people running with ipods bc they can't be alone with their thoughts and Liv thinking she intentionally won't listen and turn back for her (bc she knew Emma would never have music so there's no reason for her not to hear her.)
And Liv having a literal crisis and Emma misunderstanding that Liv doesn't want to talk to her at all bc of Liv's early reveal of how she deals with people/tasks she doesn't wanna do/talk to that time, by "I have a crisis" statements.

It seemed like the whole wedding fiasco was just the tipping point for underlying issues in their friendship and also just issues within themselves they needed to work out with Liv needing to let loose on her control over things and Emma needing to speak up for herself.

  • @mexicasian16
    @mexicasian16 2 года назад +70

i loved this movie so much as a kid especially how it emphasized friendship and the concept of platonic soulmates; friendship could get so messy between girls while young too, a lot of drama, so seeing the fighting and reconciliation at the end make me feel hopeful, that you can stop and communiciate and try to work things out with someone you care about even when it feels like the end of the world. i also loved the comparison of the two romantic relationships-how it showed how communication and support can vary between couples, and that it is okay to break up after you find out youre not right for each other even if u were together for a long time. they were good messages to hear as a girl and the background wedding theme made everything so pretty and fun; i hold a lot of fond memories of this movie.
however, i said this often as a kid and still hold this now: WHY couldnt marion call the venue and switch the dates herself?? she ultimately has final responsibility to honor what they agreed upon and theres nothing stopping her from contacting the venue and quickly fixing her office’s mistake. also, wouldnt the other bride have had her date changed too?? like if she met marion right after livemma and marion offered her the 6th since it was the last date available, and then LATER angela mixed them up when she called the venue and locked them in, then the other bride should have gotten the “something is wrong” call too!! marion is the real villain here 💀 lmao

I actually had a friendship like this once. We were so close and told each other our deepest secrets, all that jazz, but then she began doing certain things that were a huge inconvenience to me, and honestly just expected me to deal with it. When I stopped dealing with it and stood up for myself, she threw a huge fit and made herself out as the victim and me as the selfish one. It was really messy and sad and I still think about it to this day lol. Romantic breakups can be hard but this was the hardest 'breakup' I've ever gone through.
details are here if you actually wanna know. So basically this happened in highschool. I came out as a lesbian, and this friend, though straight, was supporitve of me. However she had friends that werent. We had a 'tradition' of meeting between certain classes of ours and talking before heading to the next class. We had it timed so that I could still run to my class before being late, since we met right outside of her next class, she never had to worry about being late like I did. And then suddenly these friends of hers began to meet with us in our usual spot to talk. No big deal, right? Well, these friends hated me for being gay so they would literally ignore me. I could say things and they'd exclude me from the conversation. This meant they'd talk until the late bell was nearly about to ring, and then leave to their next class, leaving me and my friend to talk until the late bell rang, which meant my friend would be like a few seconds late, while I had to run to my class and be a few minutes late. Which isn't a good look when your teacher WILL write you up for being late too many times. So, I eventually gave up and just skipped the meeting, walking past them and right to my class so I would stop being late. This, my dudes, is what caused my ex friend to go ballistic, being pissed at me for 'blowing her off'....and it all snowballed from there.

So many thoughts. In a really weird way the video (although a super mean thing to plan) kinda saved Emma from what would’ve been a lousy marriage. Fletcher seemed to want someone he could control. Like when he tells Emma post-fight that she can’t be friends with Olivia anymore because she’s a “bad influence.” Did he want to be her husband or her dad? He seemed to like Emma less when she stopped being passive, which is unfortunately a thing people encounter on the road to assertiveness (not that I don’t acknowledge that Emma and Liv were really, really intense throughout the movie). Like I get that no one wants a crazy spring break clip aired out where there are grandparents and ministers, but he also seemed just mad that the video existed in the first place. Everyone has a right to a past (so long as you’re not assaulting/abusing people). Unrelated, degrassi taught me everything my repressed family refused to talk about or at the very least provided a helpful intro, even though 10yo me might’ve been young to start watching circa 2004.

If a man told you that his ex sabotaged her best friend's hair a week before her wedding, exploited her binge-eating disorder and sent her sweet treats so she wouldn't fit into her wedding dress, crashed her bachelorette party and stole her spotlight, all because their weddings were booked on the same day by no fault of their own, wouldn't you say that he dodged a massive bullet?
You're confusing Emma being assertive with Emma being insane. Her only assertive moment in the film was when she finally stood up to Debbie. If you were doing all this to your childhood best friend, would you expect your fiancé to just idly sit by and watch you wreck a lifelong relationship like Daniel did? If this happened in real life, Fletcher would be the only one people side with.
They clearly fell out of love, though, and that's why it was right for them to separate. But I don't think it's fair to paint him out as you did when in actuality, he's the only one that can be truly vindicated.
Also, Liv is a terrible friend to Emma. Fletcher was right. Did you forget in the beginning when Liv said that Emma would eventually concede? Liv enjoys the fact that Emma is a pushover. They speak about this a few times.

As well as highlighting how emotional connection is mostly the core of female friendships hence the comment of Liv about 'feeling alone' despite her fiancé being there for her. (I hope this makes sense, I'm not particularly good at illustrating a point I apologize 😅)
Oooh you have to do 27 dresses and also may I suggest: 13 Going 30, While You Were Sleeping, and You've Got Mail.

This movie is so oddly structured. It has virtually no subplot. There's one running gag (the friend that's annoyed by her husband) and a hint at a romance subplot that can never fully be fleshed out because one of them is engaged to someone else for the majority of the film so the resolution to it is quickly revealed in dialogue in a flash forward, but other than that this movie is only told from the perspective of the two leads, which can work but in this case leaves it feeling oddly hollow and rushed.

One tiny defense of U2. What we didn’t know is that Bono psychically knew he needed to write “With or Without You” for the series finale episode of the tv series “The Americans.” In that context, only, is it perfect.

This movie was really messy and ridiculous but I still always enjoyed it. It was funny, entertaining and also had a good message about communication and I also liked it wasn't specifically a romantic comedy. The romance was more of a side plot. Kind of gave me Frozen vibes. (Yes I know. Everyone's annoyed with Frozen but hey, I enjoyed that movie lol) I honestly liked this a lot more than Devil Wears Prada. I say this cause I feel like both movies are kind of similar other than both starring Anne Hathaway. Marian St Claire was kind of the Miranda Priestly, characters who want to be the best and kind of a bad love interest. Although the friends in this movie are much better which is one of the reasons why I like it more. There really aren't any hate-able characters in this movie. Sure there are flawed characters but mostly they learned along the way like Liv and Emma and even Fletcher. He realized he and Emma weren't fit anymore even if he was kind of a douche throughout the movie though he did have understandable reasons at times for the way he acted.

43mins in has one of the most important notions/discussions that people absolutely need to hear and think about.
Because, yeah. I've seen men in my life who don't communicate well and who don't handle emotions pretty much at all. They lash out when things don't go their way and everything has to be about them. And when things aren't or when you don't fit into their version of life or how they want things to be, then everything goes to hell. They don't listen and instead attack you because you're bringing things up that they don't like. So you can't ever speak out against them or plain speak you're mind because it might result in a fight. What's important to them are their fragile egos and life when you're around them becomes about coddling those and making sure they'd don't get upset, because when they're unhappy then no one is happy - they make sure of it. Most of the time when there's an argument of any kind that I've been present for, the guy refuses to calm down or listen or reason or anything and instead chucks a hissyfit and leaves. He doesn't bother to confront the issue or work it out, he just opts not to deal with it.
This type obviously doesn't apply for every dude out there. And I'm by no means a relationship expert, but communication is key, I know that much.
And for any guys reading this, just remember that dealing with emotions is fine. Hell, it's good, especially when tempered, like all things. Just because you aren't the strongest or the angriest or whatever doesn't mean you are less of a man. Actually, it might make you more evolved. It doesn't make you weak and it doesn't mean that other men or people are better than you. This notion of men having to be these things and not dealing with emotions or genuine issues is toxic and an outdated idea that needs to be done away with.
Use your brain, not your brawn. The latter should work as an accomplice to the former.
