Besides being a great scene (and IMHO a better ending for the character than he got in Chosen), I always liked the irony that he was literally following Angel's instructions to "live the day as if it were your last" to the letter as he literally did the exact same thing he did on the last day of his human life.
I think effulgent is also what he’s referring to in s7 e3 when he asks Buffy “what’s a word that’s means glowing? It’s gotta rhyme…” I never realized how much they referenced it till now.
Yes good observation. He was losing his mind and I think all his lives were clashing in his head at once. Buffy was his light..so I thought it was a nice touch they connected his poem, with the word "effulgent" baring so much weight on what drove him to vampirism, to Buffy. He also said that to her in S6 Hell's Bells after they broke up. He tells her how he likes seeing her happy for friends..."You glow"...is what he said to her. 😍
When I watched the final episode of Angel, I was wondering what Spike was going to do with his last hours on Earth. I figured he was going to get drunk and fight random people when I saw him getting the first shot at the bar, but reciting poetry was a stroke of genius! I love the description of this video :D
it's the true him and what's nice compare to back then i feel that now in days i feel poetry is most appreciated that's why he got cheers now which put a nice smile on his face, compare to his time where people made fun of him
as much as they pertrayed spike as the punk rock vampire who doesn't give a shit, i think this was the true spike a man with a deep emotions and poet soul
There's me wanting to add a comment to a thread and realizing the thread contains a comment from my 2-years-ago self 🤦 This time around I was going to say that it's interesting how end-of-the-road Spike is at peace with his human past (William) whereas soulless Spike hated and was embarrassed by William, which is why he (and Hallie, for her own reasons) was not prepared to admit that they'd known each other.
Good for Spike having the courage to perform his poetry in front of a live audience. He probably hadn't done it for an awful long time due to the bad reception he would get from poets of his times. I like to think Angel inspired him to write poetry again after he admitted to him how much he loved his poems way back from when they were both evil, which is the only thing Angel ever liked about Spike.

it was good they had this be the last thing he does before the fight, because this is the true him, william the poet. sadly back in the day he grew up poetry wasn't appreciated as much with words people chose to use
I've seen folks write that he was actually called William the Bloody and Spike b/c his poetry was 'bloody awful,' and made folks want to put a 'spike in my head.' But I think that after he became a vampire, he sought revenge and went back to all those who mocked him to give them a new definition of William the Bloody and to fulfill their 'wish' of having a spike put in their heads.
I had totally missed this, but you all may know, Halfrek was played by the same actress who played Cecily (Kali Rocha). Apparently, Whedon and Company have admitted that Cecily was Halfrek, even during the flashback, she was a vengence demon and was in England to take care of some business. Anyway, that's what they say - ruclips.net/video/gxwaswdxg-g/видео.html
I like how spike hesitates at the last verse, as if afraid. After all those years it still hurts him.
compare to back then, i think we now have a bigger appreciation of poetry regardless of wording
So glad Spike finally got recognition for his poetry. In a different era, a different world.
Dinara Tengri Angel even told him he loved his Poetry
@@TheHalloweenKing angel loves Barry Manilow lol
It all comes around or even back around. I am gonna get one of my Dad's leisure suits out.
It took him 200 years to earn the confidence to deliver his poems the way they were meant to
@@JP-pp2tn Venom; And I am Barry Manilow!
I love how Spike still loves poetry after all these years.
I think Angel gave him strength to finish the poem. Spike still looks up to him and when Angel said he liked his poems Spike took it to heart

thank you i never knew what he said after all i ever heard that i could make out was "the want"
William was a great writer and poet, he was just ahead of his time so no one back then was ready for it.

In all probability he did it number of times since Angel heard them, yet likely his critics probably didn't end up living afterwards.

I wonder if they had that planned out when he died in Sunnydale at the end of Buffy.
I would bet on it. Spike was looking for effulgence in other people, but at the end of Chosen, he found it within himself.
"This next ones called "The Wanton Folly of me Mum"
I love how Spike's ability to write poetry is still unchanged after 100 years, despite picking up skills like hacking a computer.
I mean he could probably get ChatGPT to write him some poetry today.
Listen "a bulge in it" is a bad line but the rest of the poem fucking slaps.
his poems didnt belong in that era, they belong in this one
yeah we view poetry diffent now then back then
You know..... I always wish Spike had sang, or poem'd for Lorne..... I think that would've been a special moment
William finally comes into his own as Spike, the poet.
Dru knew Spike was going to have a soul. Lol
What's funny is what Drusilla said was glowing and gleaming was Spikes soul. 100 years later Spike finally got the respect he deserved.
I need to rewatch buffy and angel. Just amazing.
There's a list of every episode spike is in.

Was the poem he performed onstage the same one?
Yes, it's the same

It's a perfectly cromulent word
Sorry Spike, but Billy Idol is still a better poet even though he stole your look.
