How about an 80s carrier air group vs a modern carrier air group? 7-8 squadrons of F14s, A6s, A7s, F4s, S3s, RF-8s vs 4 squadrons of F-18s. It might be interesting to see if we have become too one dimensional.
F117 tactics were, side to radar, and no banking. It was banking that turned it into a basketball sized cross-section into a huge return
A veteran of the Cosovo war was talking about flying F117's in a youtube vid and mentioned its meant to fly on auto pilot as much as possible to minimize the movement of control surfaces and stay stealthy.
Well, not only that, but as the second F-117 was hit, the pilot said that he had to stay on autopilot cos he lost an engine and the onboard computers were doing most of the work while he limbed out of YU airspace and back to base .. two F-117 were hit in less than a week of the bombing campaign of Yugoslavia. One was downed .. And the war wasn't limited to Kosovo, most of the bombing was conducted in Serbia, mostly against civilan targets and factories.. (the more important military facilities were destroyed in the first few days of the bombing)

I guarded a 117 briefly back in the late 80’s or 90’s. It was pretty interesting being up close to one. Also cool to hear about some of the interesting things about it from the ground crews.

@@grimreapers there is a EA-6B AI mod that has jammers and HARMs on it
BFF? EA-6B is Navy, F-117 is USAF. They don't fly together.
@@victorpledger1280 Sure they did. Originally the BFF was the EF-111, but those were retired. The only aircraft that could fulfill the role was the EA-6B. The one F-117 that was shot down got to far from it's EA-6B with catastrophic results.
@@victorpledger1280 but they did, thats what Joint operations are all about that all parts of the Tri-Service (USAF, USN, USMC) work together.
Though at the time when no EA-6 where around the USAF had EF-111
Not surprised with that result. Classically, F117s seem to work better with NOE ingress. Clancy also posited an NOE approach and attack with A10s, too.

I was at an air show back in the late 1990s, and saw one of those F-117s crash. It was supposed to make 2 passes, but made a 3rd when the right wing came apart. Years later, using a map to where it launched from, had it only made the 2 passes, it would have crashed in my neighborhood(assuming it came apart at the same time in the same way).
And yes, I have film of it.

Cap can you do a US carrier group vs. The GCC? You did Iran vs. The fifth fleet but can you do the entire GCC "Gulf Cooperative Council" countries?
Iran doesn't have a strong Air Force other than the F-14 and it's outdated but the GCC countries have a significant force that could be intimidating.
Saudi Arabia have F15's, Typhoons and tornados, UAE typhoon and F16's, Kuwait F/A 18 and Typhoon and Qatar have F15, F16 and the Raffle. I'm not sure about Bahrain and Oman but everything is on Wikipedia, if you can simulate what they have vs. the US fifth fleet or the carrier group that would be awesome.

Would not a tight formation of 117s have a larger radar cross section by nature of being a larger group? Shouldnt you spread out in a well separated formation ? I’ve no idea if this matters in game or not.
I never heard of F-117s flying into combat in a group only solo so maybe. Also if anything the thing that got them was the fact they showed their flat and wide underbellies right over the carrier strike group. So if possible I would angle my front down towards it in a dive then pull out straight up to minimize it. Now it does not mean anything if planes only have one overall value modeled.
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough yes I would agree with you irl but I don’t know how it’s modelled in game, does the RCS change with aspect or configuration? Or is it a fixed value for the initial aircraft setup…

The F-117 is one of the single most stealthy aircraft ever produced, however, it is not very aerodynamic, not very fuel efficient, and is remarkably unstable without its incredible flight computers. The B-2 sacrificed some of the ‘physical’ stealth attributes for a far more aerodynamic form factor, allowing for a massive flight range and plenty of room along the leading edges for a plethora of sensors and EW suites, to assist in its stealth capabilities.
I think it would have worked on normal conditions with some maneuvers and dropping them earlier, you had a pretty nice window without launch after breaking from the argentine approach in the 2nd run
I was thinking the same thing - probably in the game rules for scenario. I thought take air to air armed stealth around back and take out the awacs also maybe a couple as escorts to sort out the hornets.
As far as I knew the F117 had/has a built in laser ranger/designator for laser guided bombs so it should be perfectly capable of hitting moving targets. In fact I think during the first gulf war they were one of the only very few jets capable of it. No GPS bombs back then.
That was the infamous "live" bomb drop on TV where you can watch it essentially down towards the target, go down an air vent and then go to static on the TV during the news coverage. That's a live as anyone was getting in regards to having a war shown in realtime on their TV. Minus transmission delays and things like that. It's profound and horrifying at the same time thinking back on it. As a kid though. Eff yah, that was cool! I still have my Nighthawk t-shirt when they came to the Moose Jaw airshow. It was a great time to be a kid.

under the right conditions with a bit of practice you mgiht be able to hit the carrier with unguided dumb bombs at range
that way you don't have to lase til the end, just drop and turn away
The B-2 has a claimed RCS of something the size of a bumblebee, or a similar RCS to the F-22 Raptor.
There is a bit of a clue in the name too, it's the F-117 NIGHThawk... Perhaps a night mission?

Hey Cap, I've already suggested this but if you forgot, try a flight of stealth bombers diving on the carrier fleet basically dive bombing

I have an suggestion to take down a modern carrier groupe... could you take maybe a dozend or so tomcats and fly them as close to the surface and as fast as they will possibly go. In such an scenario you could maybe out-run the SM2s... either way I highly enjoy your content, keep it up valued pilots
They tried it with the B-1s. They get spotten by the eye in the sky and intercepted by hornets before getting even close.

I still think u should try ww2 anti naval artillery like the ones used by germans on d day or other nations in coastal defenses a lot of these artillery are battleship caliber
its known that banking an f117 massively increases it's cross section.. so would be awesome if you guys actually would read up on tactics first

Can you not scale the pod track size up like you can in the Grach? In the top left corner it’ll go up to 60 which is supposed to be the scale for ships.

How come does everyone play on the beta version of DCS? Wouldn't it be more useful to play on the stable branch so you don't always get all these weird bugs?
yes BUT multiplayer is MUCH more supported in OB and everything GR do is multiplayer.
the Open Beta is often more stable than the stable release itself

Oh The B-2 has the largest stealth crosssection of any stealth thing and the F-117 is the smallest with the F-22 next then F-35.
I understood that the B2 has half the RCS of the F117, and the f35 about the same as the B2 (from here: faculty.nps.edu/jenn/ec4630/rcsredux.pdf). Is that incorrect?
Thought for an experiment: could F117s (the USAF is still flying them as radar test aircraft out west) in Ukrainian hands still penetrate Russian front line air defense?
