Boyd was his own worst enemy, he never put himself in other people's shoes and in the end no one could stand to work for him, his biggest and worst problems were not complicated or hard to figure out, he just chose not to see them, when someone holds a grudge for life against someone else who has enough self respect to no longer take that person's abuse that grudge is a way of hiding from the truth about what kind of a person they really are, Boyd hated the fact that Chip didn't need to put up with his abuse and became more successful than Boyd was.
I met Boyd @ Barrett-Jackson. He was there with his entire crew in the skybox adjacent to the one I was in. I was chattng with him a bit, then he signed my auction book on the full page of his car for salethat he had in the auction. Then he took a picture with me. A few months later, he passed. I still have the autograph & picture. What a cool guy, may he rest in peace.
Towards the end , his help jumped ship ,not wanting to meet the crazy deadlines and lack of practical designs .who wants to work for a guy who didn't get his hands dirty and soak up all the glory at unveiling.even at the end the craftsmen who actually built them left without telling him ,just pulling their tools after dealing with the jerk of a shop supervisor
While I agree with most everything you mention, at the time of the TV show, he was older, health failing, and running a business. However, his hands were dirty for years.
He didn't have to get his hands dirty anymore ,he created a business and could employ highly skilled people to bring the projects to life ...I would imagine working with him would have been worse than working for him
Wow, talk about a hostile workplace. Boyd was a good designer but a terrible boss. Dwayne was just mean. Compare Boyd's relationship to his employees to Dave Kindig's on Bitchin' Rides.
He had questional business practices but I appreciate that back in the mid 1980's he outsourced work to my shop. That gave me reconation advancing my place in the click with in the custom car industry at that time. Many people ended up disliking him because of how he used up people.

@@buzzedalldrink9131 He treated me right. I met him at the debut of the (then) recently restored "jade Idol" at the Oakland Roadster Show. He kindly let me sit in the car (in the display) and wasn't short with his time.
I remember Boyd. Beautiful car fabrication but the worst boss ever. I wouldn't buy one of Boyd's cars because whoever built it was miserable working on it.
The programs were always interesting, but later series were marred by the absurd time schedules that were apparently applied to projects, to create 'jeopardy' for the benefit of the film makers ( no doubt like the frequent arguments & fights that broke out ). As someone committed to perfection as he clearly was, it is crazy that he should compromise something that is going out with his name on it, by skimping, or cutting corners, in order to meet an unrealistic schedule.
Boyd built some great cars but watching his show would stress me out with the constant bickering, arguing, firing employees, etc., etc.........It wasn't a happy show for sure.........

In the beginning, Boyd was setting a new trend with clean designs having a throwback look with modern components. By the time Boyd was on TV, the designs were not really original with a lot of cookie cutter designs. Boyd didn't give credit to his employees like Foose, his painter and Mike. He drove them away with unrealistic deadlines and treated them like dirt. He always called Foose the enemy.
I watched maybe 6 or 7 episodes on his show. His staff did everything. He would give the artist an idea for a car. Then the artist would draw it up until it was approved. Then his other minions went to work building the car. He pretty much just walked around cracking the whip. So to say the cars built by him is a joke. The real craftsman never were included.
