Mario has eaten too many poisonous mushrooms and as a result, decided to go on a furious killing spree. In this berserker state he has also gained the new secret ability to walk through walls at will.

This is the real Super Mario Bros 2. It was never officially released in the USA and Europe. It was later ported to SNES, and released as "Lost Levels" on Super Mario All-stars.
FDS means Famicom Disk System. It was a Japanese disk-unit version of the NES.

This was such a fun TAS to watch because not only did it complete the game so insanely accurately, it did whilst killing as many enemies as possible and syncing up with the music at points.

I'd like to applaud whoever rejected this from being the SMB2 we got in the States, because it's pretty much an official Kaizo hack, whereas the US SMB2 is actually pretty fun, even if it wasn't originally even a Mario game.
This game seems to hate its players.
But SMB2 US is actually a modification of a game called Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, so if you loved the US version, then i maybe ruined your childhood

虞海 Not the full story. Doki Doki Panic was developed as a sequel to SMB2 originally. But when Fuji TV asked Nintendo to create a game featuring their mascots, Miyamoto took the prototype and inserted them into the game. Then he went in and modified Super Mario Bro’s into Super Mario Bro’s 2 for Japan. Since Doki Doki Panic wouldn’t be released in America, and the Japanese version was too difficult for western audiences, Miyamoto took Doki Doki panic and reprogrammed it to feature the Mario characters, while adding a lot of polish to it.

The game is definitely a lot more challenging than the original, but it's not impossible. I wouldn't rank it anywhere as close to impossible as the NES Battletoads game was. but I think Nintendo severely underestimated the prowess of American gamers

no, it's not that hard to go through piranha plants, which he isn't really doing. he's just going over the stem which is the only part of the sprite that hurts mario due to bad hitboxes.
I played this game very long time ago... But I thought it was a very good pirate rom hack.

Then it was made back into a Mario game for non-Japan. So in fact being pedantic about calling Super Mario USA "Doki Doki Panic" is just incorrect.
Tiviat The hit detection is literally EXACTLY THE SAME as mario 1 on the NES, AND THE FAMICOM! They are running on the exact same engine!
