How to change the settings so that your video file name (i.e. C0001, C0002, etc.) doesn't restart every time you reformat the sd card. I've tried looking on the internet on how to do this and I can't find a solution. So if you know how to bypass this, that would be a great video!
I’m a big fan of minimal post-processing, so your footage looks great to me. I’d rather focus on the creative aspects of photography than sitting in front of my computer.
This is such a great tip! I really struggle with using picture profiles and trying to color correct, which means ultimately, my footage looks wonky, and I end up not shooting video. I think the reality is, for the average person, the loss of dynamic range isn’t really that big of a deal.
100 percent agree!! A lot of beginners get told by other youtubers to jump straight into LOG profiles and do color grading and it's not good advice. This is a solid tip worth doing both by beginners and pros. I had a similar revelation and now shooting mainly Natural on my LUMIX GH5. This is after a long time of doing CineD (log like) and HLG picture profiles. Natural just looks so consistently good! Especially skin tones. I do it a little differently though, I put down the contrast instead of increasing it. It's really up to your tastes.
Nice post! Thank you! Nice video-shots too. Please keep in mind, that basic gammas give only 7-8 stops of dynamic range. Cine gammas have higher dynamic range about 11 to 11.5 stops and this will leave also for you more room for post-processing if you require it late for whatever reason. Cine gammas will require a bit more work to adjust but once you have done it, you have excellent footage out of the box, but have some room for grading too.
sidney, not gonna lie, i wasn't a believer at first but after testing out HLG, slog, cine on my a7iii to the no picture profile dude...wtheck.. it looks so much better ???!
This is such a refreshing video. I spent some time all over the internet feeling like I wasn't going to be able to make something look good unless I really learned tons and tons of things about the color grading process, but at this point in my journey (with my a6100), I just want something that looks pretty good, and this helps a lot
I appreciate your video. my wife just recently bought me sony zv e10 as a gift (before that im only using my smartphones), and for editing i use premiere pro but i really don't understand the color correcting and graxing tools. this video showed me that i can just go ahead and shoot without worrying too much about color grading. Thank you.
Great video. A lot of beginners like myself watch the log and hlg stuff and are captivated by the idea… then we realise that unless you have a fast lens and tons of studio light you are wasting your time. Definitely going to try these as I’ve been looking at Portrait anyway ❤
What's up SIDNEY! fellow DFW homie here! I know this was a few years ago but want to add to all of this awesome stuff... don't worry about all that dynamic range talk(not bashing him just in general). You want dynamic range but without log?... Put on a CPL, there's your Dynamic range. Need more? drop a 1-9 stop VND and combined that with your CPL. Makes a ton of wonderful wonders. If you don't mind the sky a little out and all, do what you do just under expose -1. It won't crack apart during post. Use the HDR wheel functions of Davinci over the SDR wheels.
I have been shooting in HLG 3 with the color setting adjusted so I drop it in my timeline and pretty much no color correction. I recorded a quick video about it and I need to edit it.....I might have to do a follow up comparing your settings as well. I have been on a color science journey lately.
That's a very good video. For beginners to start shooting. For those who want to shoot, not edit/color grade. For those who played enough with edit process and want to simplify things. Btw, most of the time I look back and think that natural/straight ooc photos are good enough. And my preferences in color grading changed. Even more to that, lets be honest - only a few are able to color grade for better, not for worse... P.s. 2 minutes only but enough said on the chosen subject. Respect.
Thank you! I’ve been saying this for months. I have the Sony a9 and a7III & I find myself just using no PP for regular home videos or personal projects. I’ve seen people use S-log but completely destroy their video with horrible color grading (see many examples on youtube lol)
Me neither! I just try to expose my video correctly and don't have to worry much about either color or dynamic range, having log is nice but if it isn't used correctly then having the best and greatest still isn't enough nor would it help much.
Excellent video ,Straight to the point,And not boring. For shortfilms i would use slog ,but for weddings or antything else usually i dont use picture profiles like you ,except 2-3 times the cine 2 with increased saturation
Thanks dude! I've always had trouble in post, getting my footage to look normal, using the in camera picture profiles. Not having to color correct every clip, will save me tons of time.
I always used portrait for videos and photos and for the first time I wanted to try out the slog-3, now you came up with this video and you changed my mind back
Sidney! Dude I have been looking all over the world for this video - I know Jason Vong said he uses no picture profile but this was the extra umph I was looking for Thank You.
Footage looks great! with all the slog options people forget how much time you can save specifically if you want a fast turnaround while still delivering decent looking colors.
Your kids are too cute!!! It's awesome that you've been able to get so much footage for them at this age! Speaking of which, I often been wondering if all of our camera hype / RUclipsness is just the 21st century version of dad's with camcorders back in the day. 🤔
Thank you so much for this very helpful tutorial! I have been struggling with this camera and everything I film looks horrible, so I am going to try your settings. They look beautiful! Beautiful kids too! 🌺🌷😊
I did some test and it's good if you dont want to color grade,it'll be good for live streaming but I prefer Cine 2,color profile on pro and I get the same results as the portrait pic profile after I color grade. But in darker areas I don't want it to be to dark and contrasty so that's why I prefer to do in manually but next time I live stream I'm definitely using this👍♿️
You are 💯correct. I do the same way. I switched off picture profile. Now I only adjust kelvin, iso and aperture. That’s it. It is very easy to do Same like canon 👍
Thanks for this! Although I'm still studying Sony Picture Profiles, I have been filming my videos with no profile and setting custom settings to get correct color with a grey card. Your video reinforces this so I don't have to do much color correction in post-production in DaVinci. I just filmed my second video on my channel using the Sony ZV-1 with no PP! Thanks...Chuck
Once you get used to PP there's not really that much to be scared of. Most times you can just get away without, you really need to use them if you are capturing a sky though, especially with clouds. SLOG lets you keep a lot of detail in the sky whereas without a PP the sky just tends to white out.
Thanks for sharing your camera settings! Here are 2 of my favorite Creative Styles that are very HLG like are... - Standard: Contrast -2, Saturation +1, Sharpness +1 (my a7s doesn't have 4K, so added sharpness in cam) - Portrait: -3, +1, +1
thanks for the tip, I know full-frame cameras like a7S III has a much more good dynamic range than APS-C (cropped) series 6000 just because has a bigger sensor using color profiles like S-LOG help you not only do color correction in post-processing but also significantly increase the worst dynamic range from a cropped sensor and as a result, you'll get ok colors and save your detail in shadows in highlights for contrast scenes like interior videography (with overexposed windows), etc
I've recently started shooting with s-log 3 and it is scary! Lol... Making sure all the settings are right and then not being able to see what your image truly looks like... 🙈 if you follow all the steps it usually works out... but I think I'll give this a try too! Thanks Sidney😁
S-Log3 is much more forgiving with 10-bit footage (or higher). It's a bit limited when it comes to color grading 8-bit footage. That's the main reason why I prefer not to shoot with picture profile with 8-bit cameras
This is really helpful. I just bought an a6100 which doesn't have picture profiles and was looking around youtube how to improve the colors without doing much correction in post.
I use standard and dabble on highlight and shadows to keep things simple. For RUclips videos, that's plenty of color grading. Great video. Short and Sweet!
Does this setting works for sony a6300 also? Need your answer, please.. love your works and im your new subscriber. Keep a good work and Thank you in advance
So great and thank you so much...is there any hint to match Sony alpha 5100/6300/6600 with your settings to avoid to much work in post :) does this work also with a external recorder like Atomos shogun 7?
I’ve bought sony zv-1 as my first camera just to film my wife and daughter during the vocations. Then I decided to check out the picture profiles just to feel how is it to film like pros do. This idea ended with completely broken footages which weren’t possible to color grade even by the professional colorist. So, now, as a newbie, I shoot only with pp0 and feel good with the results. The only important thing is a white balance. This knowledge has been gained only after a lot of mistakes, as always)
I need help. I love these settings on my a 6400 but I often shoot a second angle with a GoPro hero eight black or iPhone 12 Pro. Did I mention I’m color blind? Does anybody know settings for the GoPro or iPhone that will match the a6400 as set up in this video?
Lool I shoot portrait creative as well, well before my a6400 camera got stolen. If you check out my Camden vid and look at the comments someone asked and I responded with this too I’m so glad you validated it. I wish more people tried this.
This is the best settings I have seen 😆. I was so wrong not to used this on my last vacation. How much did you underexposed your video with this settings if I may ask?
I have been thinking pretty much this recently - nice to see it in action - thanks. I switched from Cine 4 to Cine2 but still in process of comparing results.. ultimately, sometimes less hassle is more results.
Can you still color grade this footage with some kind of LUT and it still look decent? Or maybe use Cinema Grade/Film Convert or something if you want to change the look slightly?
What QuickTip tutorial should I do next??????
Thanks for this video, I’m completely green and tips like these help so much. Thank you!
How to change the settings so that your video file name (i.e. C0001, C0002, etc.) doesn't restart every time you reformat the sd card. I've tried looking on the internet on how to do this and I can't find a solution. So if you know how to bypass this, that would be a great video!
I don't think you can bypass that with Sony cameras unfortunately
Cathy and Adam Sadly you cant bypass that, at least not yet.
bro please make a video on thumbnail

what are your settings for the natural picture profile (got my g9 today :D)
this is me right now, jumped straight into Slog2 for my first video, and its such a hassle because what if i don't expose well? then the shot is crap
I have to say, 2 weeks into using this (same settings) and I am loving it so far.
Sir I have just buy sony a 6600. With lense 1.8 / 4 105 ...please gide me best setting for food photography.... Thanks

He said that
hi, What DRO setting are you guys using shooting video. DRO off?, Auto or what?
Thank you so much man! This is the solution I’ve been hoping for! Getting tired of constantly trying to figure out the right way to use SLOG

Sidney Diongzon I will 😉

Would you recommend these camera settings on a Sony a6500 for taking photos (portrait, landscape, architecture, etc) in daylight?
The a6500 has a slightly different color science, so I'm not 100% sure. Try it though!
This is the best settings I have seen 😆. I was so wrong not to used this on my last vacation. How much did you underexposed your video with this settings if I may ask?
