A lot of MTB downhill racers use 220mm break rotors and I am surprised this bike doesn't come with those as stock. Obviously bigger rotors provide much better stopping power and they are less likely to overheat. So 220mm rotors (and adapters) can be a great cheap upgrade too.
First upgrade is the threaded rod between the peg hangers so they don’t bend in and snap.... I also put a 125/250 seat in place of the stock (which seemed to be padded with rocks). The seat plus the upgrades you listed really increase the size to what it should be. I also beefed up the plate at the front of the swingarm after it broke initially... this helps take some of the twist out of the ass end. Nice video and awesome job crushing the motogrossers!
@Zack Jordan Thanks man! Interesting mods you've done to yours as well. I'd love to see a photo of your bike with the moto seat. When I was ordering it I wanted to get any options @ the same time so I “upgraded “ to the Super Moto package (I rode M/C’s when I was younger but haven’t kept up and didn’t know Super Moto was a road racing class).
@Theknifedude The most important thing is that you're having fun! A built wheel set with hubs for this bike will run you about $750 unless you build them yourself with your existing hubs. If you're riding a lot of rough off-road, I'd suggest it. Or just run it until you bend spokes, rims like I did. The 21" does help when rolling through rougher terrain. Hope you enjoy your purchase and thanks for the note!
Super high quality video thanks so much for putting it together and for all the information! Definitely snagging a lot of these recommended upgrades. Going to be super easy for me because I'll be installing when I get the bike brand new so it will already be disassembled!

@Drew Robinson Great question as always. The rear shock (and fork, depending on which model you have) are definitely worthy upgrades. I opted for wheels because I was having problems with my stock ones. My rear wheel was coming out of true, bending/breaking spokes and ultimately bending the rim. That being said, a rear shock would be very close on the list after upgrading the wheels.
Nice video! Thanks for all the information! Definitely thinking the Sur Ron is the way to break into electric Hare Scrambles and Enduro/Sprint Enduro because of the relatively inexpensive and easy to change battery packs. Will the stock fork work with the 21" front wheel?
@Alexander Mangani Thank you! Yes the stock fork will work with the 21" Wheel. Let me know if you have any other questions! Feel free to DM me on instagram @electriccyclerider if you have any other specific questions.
Looks like: Josh is out of business based on the closed ebay site and recent negative reviews & protaper is out of stock still. Anxious to hammer to become available. Thoughts on alternatives for new wheels? Any update on the throttle by wire giveaway & installation/use? Would be curious how often you personally ride the Surron vs the freeride. I'm considering both........love the support of the KTM but the limited mileage/time sucks! Thanks

Was looking at the tires you listed and noticed only 1 tube but different size tires front vs. back. Is that the same tube size for both? Also, do you know if the wheel width of 1.85 will rub or not with a Shinko 241? Thx
Josh Norman is MIA. Any other options for the wheels? There has to be something else, pre-built by now, no? I've got a BAC8000 kit and my bike are showing up next week, so I've been looking everywhere for 21" wheels without any luck. You can't even find SR hubs or another set of stock wheels to take the hubs from. At this point, I'd even change out the entire front fork if it enabled me to use a MTX-grade wheel. I'll have plenty of power to deal with the added weight.
@Troy Muni I've talked to Josh Nowell and he said he's moving shops right now. I'm not aware of another option at the moment but you could get a 21" 1.6 moto rim and utilize your stock hub. You would just need to track down the correct spokes and get it mounted. If anyone knows of some other wheel builders, feel free to chime in!
@@ElectricCycleRider Thanks, I appreciate it...very nice of you. He emailed me a few days ago as well, so glad to hear it's just a temporary delay. Btw, I got my bike yesterday, put it together and rode it for a while today. Was the first time in +20 years that I've been on 2 wheels and I had a blast on it. All the attention it draws will definitely take some getting used to!
Thanks for this video. Concerning the front the 21 inches wheel, is it a standard moto cross wheel ? The fork, the brakes must be upgraded too considering the biggest wheel ? Thanks (sorry for these stupid questions)
Moto rim laced to a hub that has a mtb interface. Sur-ron uses mtb forks, so unless you can get a different fork or adapter, you are going to be using mtb brakes. The good side is dh bike forks and brakes are actually really good. The bad is the fork is tuned for a 38# bicycle with a 160-180# rider. There are companies that tune mtb suspension (shims).
I've got the 2021 Surron LB-x with the stock fork. KKE BF-355 RC. Just did the 21" front wheel upgrade. 21" Milk racing rim with Dunlop Geomax MX53 80/100. Its amazing how much my ride has improved. Only problem is that I'm an avid trail rider and quite often the fork bottoms out on the top of the tire even with the preload on Max. Did a little more research and found out that Woodys Wheel House has a note on their website stating that the 21" motorcycle wheel is not designed to work with the OEM RST Killah Forks. Could you suggest a fork that will work with the 21" upgrade?
Informative video Tucker. I'm intrigued by the stem since it's not a direct mount. My personal issue with direct mount stems is the Dorados I run are MTB forks which mean MTB crowns. I'm using the Answer 810s which ARE Moto bars. So falling allows the bars to pivot on the stem rather than possibly damaging the top crown. The elastomers fascinate me for damping though. The Dorado high speed damping is great, but perhaps I'll try the stem as well. Thanks for your videos!
@Mark Kitaoka Thanks for the note! As always, your insight is a huge help to all of us (myself included!). Great point in regards to the direct mount stem. I've had the stock stem pivot in a crash and although I know the XC Gear stem would do the same, I've luckily not crashed since installing it. It's a great piece of equipment and provides a bit of relief when you hit square edge or sharp impacts. As you know, suspension is the most important way to make the bike feel the best but the Hammerhead360 gives some added comfort when the going gets rough. I'm not quite sure how a direct mount would have handled my crashes but the extra weight of the Surron (in comparison to a mountain bike) could potentially do some damage... Would like to try one out. What is the diameter at the clamp for your Answer bars? Did you have to modify them to fit the stock stem?
@@ElectricCycleRider The Answers are 31.8mm at the mount. I did not have to modify the stem at all, just turned it upside down to add just a bit of height.
Thank you. I just received my x160 and would like to upgrade handlebars and 21 inch wheel seems like a great move? I have no idea of what i could do and your tips sound easy. Although the hammerhead stem looks great but expensive expensive.
Thanks for the video..!!! What adaptor did you use to mount the 360 Hammerhead on the Sur ron. Would you recommend yours or the mountain bike version they will have out soon..? Looking forward to your reply, Cheers!!
Hi Tucker. Thanks for the Information! I think I will go with the Hammerhead Stem and probably the ProTaper Bars. Do know much about the New ProTaper Contour Bars? The material used on the Contour Bars, supposedly gives the bar a little more flex for impact? But would like to hear what others think? I alwatys like the Higher Bars on any Bike. I purchased the Diety Mid High Bars with mine and their great bars but I wish I would've gone we ith the Diety High Rise instead. I'm 6'-0" tall and never sit down while riding. I've been looking at new wheels as well and have actually been thinking about starting my own aftermarket high end wheel supply company for Sur-Ron Bikes because I couldn't find what I was looking for. I even Bought a Wheel Truing Machine about a year ago. I Like the gearing on the 19" Rear and the 21" Front seems like the way for rolling over anything at high speed! Good Choice! I'm on my 2nd set of Stock Sur-Ron Wheels now. You were asking for other recommendations: 1. I upgraded the Footpegs to a Larger Format Footpeg, built for a Yamaha Bike. It Helps with my Foot Pain after long rides and Better Control! I highly recommend this! They took a little modification to Fit... but Now, Sur-Ron Actually offers a new larger Footpeg, now. I did this on mine, 2 years ago! 2a. One of the Best things I've done to mine was Upgrading my Suspension to Fox Factory Series 40 Forks in the Front...What an Amazing Difference! &... 2b. Upgrading the Rear Shock to the Fox Factory Series DHX2 8.5"...Everything fit well and what a Difference! I don't know how you could get any Better than this unless it was Ohlins..
@J Michael Klebba Jr All great stuff here for sure! Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I agree, the foot pegs are terrible and should be upgraded. And the rear shock to Ohlins or Fox is a big upgrade. I ride Pro Taper Contour bars on a lot of my full size dirt bikes that use oversized 1-1/8" bars. You are right that the Pro Taper Countour has some more flex or give than other bar offerings. These Pro Tapers I recommend here are MTB bars that utilize the standard 31.8mm width that mountain bike stems use.
@@ElectricCycleRider it took a while to read this but thank you for the response. I think I'll order the Contour - Pro Taper Bars. Currently I'm using a Deity Bar. I'm not sure what the width is but I didn't cut any off. I prefer to have them as wide as possible. I'm not sure if that's right or not?
Thanks...have you looked at any KYB options for the Sur Ron ? Bought a 2018 YZ65 for my kid...forks are insane good... unfortunately so is the noice !!! Sooo f....ing loud !!!! Had to stop riding due to complaints.... Thanks...plan getting the X..will do some of your suggested upgrades...like the bigger tire and rims as #1 ...and bars....forks would be next...
@Steve I am testing a prototype model in this video but XC Gear is working hard to get it available to the public. Check back as it should be available soon! I'll post a video when it's ready.
2 change so many parts to make this bike any good does questioned purchase in the first place how much does a all them modifications cost sounds pretty expensive
A couple of questions .... 1) You don’t seem to talk about the front fork upgrade ... surely the bike does NOT come with the Rockshox Boxxer, correct? 2) The total price of the upgrades making the bike pretty pricey .... I mean, regardless what you throw at it, it will still not become KTM Freeride-E .. right? I think it’s a great bike at 4K USD ... but, if you start throwing cash in it, including controller and battery, you will be close to double the original price or even more?
@mxs Thanks for the note, I'll answer your questions below 1.) I have the Limited Black Edition Sur-Ron X which indeed came stock with the Rockshox Boxxer. I know it was a limited time offer and not sure if they'll do it again. If I were to pick an aftermarket fork to test on the bike, it would be a Fox40, Manitou Dorado or custom option. 2.) You're absolutely right and this is a common debate with any bike that requires upgrades to be competitive. The Surron is an affordable option and the reason that it is affordable is because of some of the hard parts and accessories on the bike are budget focused. Replacing some of these parts will absolutely help the bike ride better and faster but no matter how much money you throw at the Surron X, it will not turn it in to a Freeride-E or Alta. It falls into a different category of bike and should be embraced for what it is! Hope this helps and please let me know if I can expand on any of this. Thanks!
Electric Cycle Rider thanks for taking the time to clarify. I myself love the hybrid category .... somewhere between .... enduro and eMTB. It is great where speed and power comes second to lightness, nimbleness of a hybrid. I am also curious to see what happens once people start sending 72V and 200A to the stock motor. I don’t think it will last long in the hands of a guy with your skill set. The stock motor is not built for that sort of power to go through on prolonged basis. How much are you into upgrades on top of the stock limited version price, if you don’t mind me asking?
@Lonnie Domnitz I'm working on a video with that as we speak actually. The Rockshox Boxxer is a great fork but I have something new to test out here soon. In the meantime, feel free to DM me at @electriccyclerider on instagram if you have any direct questions on that stuff, happy to help!
I agree, one of the reasons I have not got a fork yet is I do not know the particulars as far as size and fitment. If you could add that to a video it would really help. I can't afford a new $1500 fork so looking at used forks is a drag without know what to look for. Thanks
whats your thoughts on using a 26'' mtb wheel vs the 21? i like that stem, might get one myself! only other upgrade I'd suggest short of bigger $ items like controller etc is the rear spring for fat blokes... 550lb or so.
Tucker, thanks for all your info on the bike! I am thinking about preordering one from the next batch and if I do I am going to get wheels from Josh. Are you running the 1.6 or the 1.85 rear rim and what size rear tire are you running? I'm looking for a wider rear setup but don't want to rub. Thanks for any info!
@Werner Garage Thank you for the note! Awesome to hear you're considering one. I am running a 1.6 rear rim and a 70/100-19 on the rear. The bummer is that you typically need to run a front tire on the rear (unless you run a Shinko Trials Tire). Hopefully we'll get a big brand to start manufacturing a competitive rear tire for this size wheel. Always feel free to DM me on instagram @electriccyclerider if I can help you with anything directly.
Hi. I’m 6 foot 6 and have a Sur Ron arriving in a few weeks, I want to do some mods to make the bike feel bigger and more comfortable. Would you recommend and 27.5 mountain bike wheel for the front?
@Dave Henry Thanks for reaching out, I'd recommend the 21" moto wheel in the front for this bike. The bike comes with moto style wheels so switching to MTB wheels won't help the bike overall. The 21" with a full size front tire like I have in this video will make the bike feel quite a bit bigger!
@Dave Henry Yes I would recommend upgrading the stock fork. I'm working with a reputable suspension tuner right now to figure out a "fix" for the DNM fork but a Fox 40, Manitou Dorado, DVO Emerald, Ohlins DH38 or Rockshox Boxxer will all preform better.
How mush moo la ya got into that bike ? Base cost . Upgrade costs ? I’m thinking of buying one . I ride enduro motorcycle. Like to have one for when the trails are closed during fire season closers . Thanks for the video 👍😃
@Johnny Dangerously Thanks for the comment, it's a great secondary bike for the type of riding you're talking about. I ride my ICE enduro and moto bikes regularly but the electric is really fun when riding areas are limited and you need to be stealth. See below for the MSRP of the parts. 1.) Pirelli Scorpion Tires: $145 2.) Michelin Tubes: $21 Per Tube 3.) Pro Taper Handlebars: $85 4.) XC Gear Hammerhead 360 Stem is a pre-production model. Price TBD 5.) Wicked Wheel Werks Wheels with hubs: $750 6.) Shimano H03C Brakes Pads: $35 Per Set 6.) Luna Cycle Skid Plate: $59
You don't need any of that stuff. You can want it. But you don't need it. It all depends on how you ride these things but you can have fun right out of the box and then just upgrade as you break things.
You can omit the skid plate if you get some 3/8-1/2" high density neoprene rubber or rubber horse matting and put a piece between the oem skid plate and the motor. Boom done. Now my skiddy doesn't bend and i didn't spend any money on it. Horse mat is $2 a foot at TSC.
Your links are not taking me to the right part. Tire link is 19” Stem link goes to the non stem mount clamp. People may order wrong parts due to your recommendation. Mahalo! 🤙🏽
Great review Mark! I was looking for the XC hammerhead on the XC site link that you provided and could not find it. Can you let me know where you got it? Looks like an amazing stem. Your bike looks like a real trail beast!
@Daniel Brown Thanks for reaching out, my name is Tucker though. Haha. The XC Gear Hammerhead360 that I'm running is actually a pre-production model. XC Gear should be stocking them soon so it would be best to send Lance at XC Gear a note or check back. It's an amazing stem and works really well on the Surron! Thanks for watching.
Electric Cycle Rider Thanks Tucker! (My apologies for the screw up!). I did reach out to XC and Lance got right back to me. Definitely going to be putting this on the bike when it is available
When looking for the stem, which bike do I say it's for? Great 5 tips..I'm going to order parts to have them ready for when my bike shows up. Bars, stem, brakes are my first before I ever ride
@Brian D Howard If you contact XC Gear and ask for an update on the Hammerhead360, they will be releasing the production model soon. Awesome to hear you've got all the parts coming in for your new bike. Thanks for watching.
@5006lobezno Best to reach out to XC Gear directly, their website is in my video description. I am testing a pre-production model in this video. Thanks for watching.
A total cost of your upgrades would be quite helpful. I'g guess you've spent more than $1,000 for the items on that list. Really helpful would be to know the cost of those wheels? The custom wheel maker has none for sale. Are there any off the shelf wheels you'd recommend?
Some nerd can correct me if I'm wrong. Luna Cycle is the exclusive dealer in USA. You can buy one direct from China like from Alibaba but you will be responsible for import fees and a bunch of paperwork. It's called the suron light bee or something over there. You can also buy the Segway x260 which is basically a slightly upgraded Suron.
@TNL Capo Lean It really depends on the type of terrain you're riding and what type of rider you are. You will be fine at 5'9" on this bike, especially if you run the taller bars and 21" up front. If you're already a dirt bike rider and you have the means, I would recommend checking out the 2020 KTM Freeride E-XC or waiting for the Sur-Ron Storm to release which are both close-to* full size dirt bikes with more power, better suspension and better brakes. If you're just getting in to throttle assist bikes, I would recommend the Sur-Ron for sure.
@TB-Sur ron They're working on it right now. The one I'm testing is a pre-production model. Shoot them a note on one of their platforms and they'll respond.
@marcolfo roso The fork that came on my bike is a Rockshox Boxxer. I ordered the limited black edition from Luna Cycle. The rear shock is a DNM coil shock. The Boxxer works well but I would consider trying out a Fox 40 or Manitou Dorado. The DNM shock is not great but gets the job done. Let me know if you have any specific questions, thanks!
@@ElectricCycleRider Thanks for the answer! Yes, I would like to know if you had the DNM or other fork before the Boxxer on your Sur-ron. Particularly for DNM, because I have one, on my LMX 81 e-bike and I would like to understand if, from your impressions, I have to decide to replace it, with some of the downhill forks we are talking about, such as Fox, Manitou, Boxxer or even DVO Emerald or Marzocchi
I’d recommend going for a Fox 40 over the other options for this bike. Reasons being, the Dorado will be too flexy (it’s already a bit too flexible for downhill mountain biking, really), and Rockshox boxxers have quite short fork legs. Adding a 40 to this bike would help prop the front end up a little higher, helping with the cramped feel, and they’re very stiff laterally for a mountain bike fork.
Everyone needs one. Its great letting other people take it for a rip, they all come back with the same goofy ear to ear koolaid smile with the same question... "so how much was this thing?" And thats where you lose them. Lol.
Electric Cycle Rider can you provide the link for your 21” scorpion tire.. the link provided is only for the 19”,, im assuming that is the rear tire. I tried searching in amazon and the 21” doesnt come up
J W Word! DNM and RST are throw away junk. I have a boxxer fork laying around I could throw on if I buy one. Haven’t yet though because there are so many upgrades I’d have to do to be happy. Wheels, tires, bars, stem, brakes, fork, shock, skid plate, 54t sprocket. It’s an $8000+ bike when finished, with about $1000 in throw away stock parts sitting in the garage unused because nobody would buy them. No thanks. Maybe when Surron/Luna are able to spec their bikes better from the factory and charge a little more I will be a customer. Just the fact that they downgraded suspension tells me they’re going in the wrong direction though. Oh well, I’m patient.
Well not stock they're not. I believe he has a black edition but the mx and x version both have 70/100-19 front and rear. And you wont get anything much wider on it as the frame and forks just aren't wide enough.
A lot of MTB downhill racers use 220mm break rotors and I am surprised this bike doesn't come with those as stock. Obviously bigger rotors provide much better stopping power and they are less likely to overheat. So 220mm rotors (and adapters) can be a great cheap upgrade too.

Feel free to DM me on instagram @electriccyclerider if you have any other specific questions.
is the sur ron water and snow proof?
Yes
Its water resistant, they recomend no pressure washing or heavy rain. Average rain ok but I would dry it soon after any rain
Thanks

Will these work on the Segway x260?
Great video and thank you for all of the information. Cheers👍
@BUD WHITE Thanks! I appreciate the note! 👍
There are companies that tune mtb suspension (shims).
love the advice! ty
What is good about this bike that is stock? It might be cheaper to select a different bike, no?
Thank you. I just received my x160 and would like to upgrade handlebars and 21 inch wheel seems like a great move? I have no idea of what i could do and your tips sound easy. Although the hammerhead stem looks great but expensive expensive.
Luna Cycles has been out of these bash guards for months, not sure if they plan to make it again. If so someone needs to make a their own version.
Do these mods go hand in hand for the segway x260?
You were asking for other recommendations:
Electric Cycle Rider did you cut the bars width? Or are you riding at full 810mm

Probably too heavy ...
did you use these handlebars at their full length? Thanks
Cant seem to find those handlebars, would you recommend an alternative?
@Ian Mangham i miss-typed... i meant to ask about the stem... thats what i cant find anywhere. Would you recommend the mako by the same brand?
@Steve I am testing a prototype model in this video but XC Gear is working hard to get it available to the public. Check back as it should be available soon! I'll post a video when it's ready.
Also, the Mako will unfortunately not work on the Sur-Ron. It is developed for motocross clamps.
Surprised that as these e-bikes get faster that dual disc front brakes haven’t been utilized. Easy way to increase braking power and therefore safety.
@mxs Thanks for the note, I'll answer your questions below
1.) I have the Limited Black Edition Sur-Ron X which indeed came stock with the Rockshox Boxxer.
If you replaced the fork to fit the 21” tire, which fork did you choose? Would love to watch a how-to video on the fork replacement for Sur-Ron.

550lb or so.
fat blokes should not buy a Sur Ron
That stem is almost $400....give me a break!
How much for that exact bike out the door?(including upgrades)
Just ordered my Sur Ron for Delivery to Breckenridge, Colorado !! What is the max tire size on the stock rear rim (I want to upgrade it ASAP)
Is it easy to swap front tire rim and tube? I'm so new ? I bet 21 inch in front makes a nice improvement
Were i can buy so an bike?
Uncorrect link for the front tire, which size?
Can the stock suspension front/rear be tuned either in terms of spring rates or dampening, or is it just a matter of buying something aftermarket?
Where can you buy these in the US? I can only find Luna Cycle and they have 1 model. Thank you!

@@ElectricCycleRider Thanks, I just ordered one and some mods per your video. Thanks!
Electric Cycle Rider thanks. Would you use that in conjunction with a fox 40 shock or similar? The demo I rode felt pretty rough in the front end

Great video. Anywhere on the east coast you can buy one of these bikes? Thanks
5’9 190 pounds is this a good bike? or is it too small and got any ebike recommendations?
@TNL Capo Lean It really depends on the type of terrain you're riding and what type of rider you are. You will be fine at 5'9" on this bike, especially if you run the taller bars and 21" up front. If you're already a dirt bike rider and you have the means, I would recommend checking out the 2020 KTM Freeride E-XC or waiting for the Sur-Ron Storm to release which are both close-to* full size dirt bikes with more power, better suspension and better brakes. If you're just getting in to throttle assist bikes, I would recommend the Sur-Ron for sure.
I've been trying to find the stem you have but XC has no listing for it on their site.

I forgot: how much did you spent for the Boxxer?
I’d recommend going for a Fox 40 over the other options for this bike. Reasons being, the Dorado will be too flexy (it’s already a bit too flexible for downhill mountain biking, really), and Rockshox boxxers have quite short fork legs. Adding a 40 to this bike would help prop the front end up a little higher, helping with the cramped feel, and they’re very stiff laterally for a mountain bike fork.
marcolfo roso if u gotta ask u can’t afford it
I need one
Everyone needs one. Its great letting other people take it for a rip, they all come back with the same goofy ear to ear koolaid smile with the same question... "so how much was this thing?" And thats where you lose them. Lol.

Is that Rock Shox Boxxer a 27,5" or 29"?
@Laverenz Productions This is a Rockshox Boxxer 27.5" in this video.
Damn! Envious of all the people that got them when they still came with the Rockshox.. lol
