@ I’m sure it’s controversial but I prefer the more…. Raw sounding audio that you offer on your channel it gives a more authentic sound and I get your passion for what you’re talking about.
@ for a very very long time i was raw but the more dming i have done the more that swayed for me. When I play i do everything basically raw when i dm rule of cool reigns. I find that rule of cool gives players especially new players, a better grip on the aspects of dnd and the free form it has. I believe that raw and rules as intended have their places at every table. Rule of cool rules the games I dm.
Such an iconic villain in my opinion he's so perfect for a undead warlock patron or a death domain or knowledge domain cleric
I agree though one must except the morality of worshipping or dealing with Vecna. That has got to be so taxing on the soul just to garner his attention.

I am actually using Eve of ruin to write our biggest campaign to date. Definitely vecna tied to it, but entirely its own story. Let me tell you a tale of a very popular villain in our group who, to this day, still schemes. Mardesh Pontiff, The eclipsed. ( Trickery Domain cleric )
1. Mardesh lived the life of a troubled man, always had forced circumstances wedged into his path despite being frail. With a wrist mounted crossbow and dagger during his adventurer days, he, along with his friends, traversed the forgotten realms for many a highly profitted quest. However, he soon found himself falling in love with an eloquence bard named Cresis. The mutual feelings bloomed as time went on. Even the group picked up on this to poke fun at the couple during a hill giants raid. Their journey ends in celebration of chiming wedding bell's and announcing a child on the horizon. To few adventurers ever get a deserved ending, and for Mardesh... this remains true.
2. Betrayal... by kingdom, by ally, by familial ties.. for in one swift morning, Mardesh had to witness the very worst of people as they committed crimes unthinkable... it Broke him.. his beloved wife with child still in her womb were slain by the hands of our paliden group leader, the kings men pinned him down to make him watch as they violated their very lives irreversibly until they slit her throat. Before he could even cast a spell to escape the carnage, his dominant left arm got severed by a great sword. He was beating the down man to a near inch of life before his so-called friend plucked out his right eye. Brought to the very kings throne room among the many nobles, they listed many crimes in his name.. his jaw riddled in pain, he couldn't even appeal or challenge these accusations... he could only look to the group of people he once called friends to only see who they truly were in this grim moment... only in his mind he barked them all as simply... " Monsters " his sentence was death by labor in the salt mines south of Kamal... where he spent five years pushing rail carts full of white gold for crimes he never committed.. his magics suppressed to near nothing by a unique slave seal until death.
3. Nurturing the hatred he now habors just to survive as long as he did, his body though toned was still stricken by his illness since birth. His memory of his wife plays back repeatedly even in his dreams as the day he lost everything he held dear was a cancerous nightmare that only in his mind only Screams. Late in the night of autumn, he pushed out the last of the daily shipment with the last of his strength... only to be detained once more by slaver inspecting it. He barks to all in the mine " More!!! We are behind for shipments!! " Mardesh could only slump down in pure exhaustion and needing air. The slaver wasn't amused in the slightest as he pulled a small knife, gutting out theworneed down workers by the weakest. Mardesh in silence could only crawl backwards towards the rugged wall of dirt, his ptsd kicking in as the slaver kept killing. Perhaps it was a stroke of luck for Mardesh that the last dying man crashed himself into the support beam, causing the mine itself to unstable in mere moments. The slaver in cowardly haste pushed back the slaves to get ahead of them while those in screaming filled the tunnel being crushed to death by the falling debree of heavy rock. His ptsd was at a alarming high, his senses blocked as he himself couldn't detect the ground beneath him was sinking into the gulch far below and he with it. Only in the pitch black with a rush of air blowing loudly in his ears he silently spoke. " Cresis... "
4. Return... by some miracle Mardesh had survived the plunge. But his surroundings were of a unknown origin, for the gulch itself oozed a foul toxin. He had to tread carefully, for he had nothing at hand to defend himself nor the means to cast, his magics... it wouldn't take long for Mardesh to realize the nature of this place.. as unknowns crawled the walls, ant like abominations carried the vast foulnesses to wherever the holes went. He hugged the walls to keep himself clear of the lurking dangers. Even clever traps of odd statues spitting out the very toxins to any that moved. Mardesh had to make a gamble, to either stay where he was and get eaten by these ants, or risk running to where he can see the giant doors in a volley of toxins. He chose life as he sprints with all his strengths in legs towards the only doors he sees. Flying past him was the statues spit in rapid sessions.. each one just barely grazing him. One hit the sealing mark on his back as indescribable pain flares across his body. By the time he got to the doors, he heard the many ants behind him giving chase. His mistake shortly after was looking back to see yet another statue spit in his remaining eye as he pushes the door fully enough to slip in, then to close the heavy mythril doors before collapsing in pain as he now goes fully blind. Mardesh alone felt his power returning but the cost to survive was steep, adjusting to his predicaments was his lifes tale, yet his Hatred only spers him on.. leading him to a straightforward path to the ominous chamber lit by green ghastly flames. A sumber voice unexpectedly Greets him. " Your god truly has foresaken you... Struggler. Tis a phenomenal amount of hatred thats kept you alive even now... " Mardesh tries his hardest to find the voice, his body however was at a worse condition ( just living on 1 hp point btw. ) Mardesh whispers weakly. " you... know of me? " as the voices replie gives a sinister chuckle.. as a light tap onto his shoulder alerts Mardesh that indeed he wasn't insane. His calm tone brings a chill to Mardesh spine. " A tale as old as time.. for gods to toy with their worshipped... the thrill of adventure... beautiful betrayals leading to a dimly lit world as well the scars to bare.. ordeals were woven before worn.. I know of this.. Lord Vecna knows of this.. "
5. Maelstrom... as months went by with this stranger, the creature of questions was a Vampiric clergy of blood magic tending to Mardesh very being, fixing was broken, gifting him with his lords eye and hand.. but to replace the poisoned eye he himself killed a beholder to receive a eye.
Sorry it took me so long to read this but wooooow that’s an awesome character. That’s definitely right up my alley. I love that he was betrayed by the people he trusted, because it shows how far he had fallen from who he was. It also shows some beauty in his understanding that friendship party members are all just time sensitive.
Betrayal teaches a lot of lessons. In the extreme fashion that he suffered, I absolutely believe that ending all life is a suitable end based on how he was treated, and what he lost. Destroying that paladin for the vengeance of the his lost child and wife. I love that. Gruesome and vile there actions, I mean he’s definitely my hero!
Mardesh was my first ever villain to have the privilege to share and write. He was fun as player, but when I took the dm seat I knew who my villain needed to be. And to even my surprise my friends refuse to let him die 🤣 quite literally all of them said Mardesh is the most cunning bastard to have ever had the joy of hating but sympathize at the same time. He indeed got his revenge, destroyed a country by economical mishandling through the very salt mine he was to die in, and even pissed off a god... and is lmao still alive😂
@ it is totally cool how that character evolved it’s a great thing to have characters mean so much to your group.
To celebrate the eve of ruins, Mardesh will return with a very bold plan to become a god himself to kill a god in mind. And if I'm reading this right, it's a multiversal encounter. We already have all 25 friends here in waiting and were thinking of having two dms tell the tale.
