Thanks for the video. Just for clarification and something that could probably get you higher up on the RUclips search, the name of the mic is "Shure Beta 57a" and not what you have in the title. Nitpicky, I know, but accurate.

I feel like the beta had higher output and was being compressed more as a result. Hard to tell when you add eq & compression. Not really a fair comparison if they're not the same output, the louder one is going to compress more. Kind of a useless comparison.

I really like them both a lot. I like how the beta picks up more of the snare wires but I agree with the people that say it is slightly thin sounding. Love this video, I have pretty cheep mics and was debating between the two and now I think i know what I want!

The regular shure beats out the beta by a slim margin for my ears. Snare sounds more level with it. Great stuff Joe. I really like your videos about mics and eq.

They both sound great. The beta is a supercardioid mic so the real question is could you benefit from less mic bleed and or possible feedback? When recording or live play this could be better in a full mix. I like both mics.

SM57 if miking top and bottom. If only 1 mic for the snare, I'd go with the Beta 57 because it's brighter.

And what about using Beta 57 on top and SM57 on the bottom? Do you think its good combo?

Beta is a little bit more clear and brighter than the SM57 (which is more dull, but only slightly) but it´s very hard to identify the difference. I´m sure with both mics you will have a good sound on stage....thanks a lot for the test....I recently bought a SM57 for to use it with a Cajon and I´m still looking for the reasons why there is this big hype about that mic....

Well, I like the Beta here, but I've heard vids where I've liked the SM better.
My dilemma is, I own both and I have to use one on the snare and one on the hats. Dunno which combo is better tho 🤷

As recorded, the snare drums sound better to me using the beta 57, but the cymbal bleed sounds better in the SM 57. Like Richard Wielglosz comment says, if you've got EQ and compression it's hard to tell what you're get direct from the mic and what you're get from the mic, but from what I can hear, that's my opinion.

Hmm. That's a tough one. I'm just a drummer and not a sound man/engineer. The regular 57 did seem to have more body which I think would be an advantage for toms (I'm pretty sure you didnt switch out your tom mics) but the beta had nice highs which made the snare sound better but it seemed to have less body or lows. I think the pros like flat responses and can E.Q. when and where they need to so the beta might have a coloured high end they might not like but Im just guessing.
An advantage of the beta would be that it doesn't have the plastic dust cap/wind screen or whatever you call it that the regular 57 has that sometimes comes loose and buzzes especially on the toms. In case some weren't aware Shure does have a fix for it where they send you pieces of foam to jam up inside under the cap so it doesn't vibrate. The band-aid sucks but at least it is free if you call them. If you lightly shake your mic and hear the cap move or click that is bad. If you get a buzz and the cap is tight the diaphragm may have come unglued. I've glued one on with contact cement and it worked. Im sure the freq response could have changed but I can't tell and I'm not out $50-100. Just putting it out there to help. I would stick with the classic 57 even with the cap headache. I've had them for over 20 years.
    Thanks for making the video!

Beta has a little more clarity. Live no one would notice.

Very hard to judge against only one setup and over RUclips. But I have both mic’s and usually go with the beta

The Beta 57A is so much superior to the SM57 in every application that I don't know why anyone still uses the SM57, at all.

SM57 deeper better sounding all round. the beta too thin for mine. i'm no expert on recording tho. might be other considerations... but on a drum sound only... for me its the SM57

Alright, really liked how the SM57 made you're snare sound, deeper sound. Took some of the crack out of sound. Tom's sounded like crapp, especially your middle tom.
Now, the Beta added that crack back in the snare & I could hear you're rack toms a lot better. Next time add all your cymbals using both mics. I'm curious. Thanks

Beta more volume and colour, sm57 dry, poor sound.
