No one is mentioning the Audix D1… that was legit my favorite one out of the group. It had clarity that I really enjoyed that literally none of the other mics had.
Its between the 441 and the NT6 for me, I really like the fullness of the 441, but I also love that "ping" in the NT6, both sounded great. Also the bleed was so minimal in both. Fantastic video Dave :) thank you
If you end up doing another shootout with the E22s and the m80, I’d love to see the SE V7 in there! That’s what I’m using currently. Curious to see your thoughts on it.
This is such a well-made video. Not only did you feature the mics with a great drummer but also provided insights I wasn't really paying attention to while watching these types of videos, the "periphery outside the direct source", and that is how the bleeding behaves, specifically the crash in this case. At first listen, honestly, even the cheapest mic sounded great, cause you have excellent items in your chain, starting with the musician. But, once I started listening to the bleeding and tuning out the snare, there were some major differences. To me, the NT6 and 441 were the best choices for this snare. Thank for doing this, dude. I learned a lot today!
Is it because of the mic position that SM75 is a little fatter in the softer play than DP5. I saw the sm57 is nearer to the center of the drum head than the dp5.
I have a Josephson e22s. It's very good, but honestly... For a dedicated, bespoke snare mic, I don't find that it's particularly outstanding in that application. Probably the best thing about it is the off-axis sound is very smooth. You get a lot of hi-hat bleed, but the bleed sounds smooth and unoffensive. When I record with that mic, I often don't use a hat mic; I get all the hat I need from the snare mic and overheads. But I get way more "pop" out of an SM-57, and I think the Sennheiser 441 is the best mic I've heard on snare. For the $1300 or so the e22s costs, you could get several other mics, including one that's better on snare. I'm going to try the Sennheiser e945 soon on snare -- its open top-end and strong off-axis rejection seem like it'd make for a great snare mic. I'm probably going to sell my e22s.
Yeah, the 441 gets a lot of use on snare bottom by other producers. I also love the m201 but find it lacks a little bite on its own. It's a really cool mic and I've had a pair for a few years, but I'm still discovering where I like them best.
Had the same problem with my rode nt5s with overheads. Couldn't get them low enough for snare but couldn't get them hot enough for a nice OH sound. Got the pads you got as well and wasn't thrilled afterwards either. Kinda bummed. Wish I would have got some sm81s.
Cool to see a pro doing a voiceover with a Rode Podmic instead of a SM7b like EVERYONE else. That mic is an excellent value at a fraction of the cost of an SM7b I love mine
Fantastic video again ! I know it's a bit off topic but out of curiosity I noticed you use the Natural Phase mode on Pro Q3 (snare top). Would you say this mode is the good compromise between phase shift and pre-ringing when it comes to eqing drums ?
Yeah, I'm almost always in natural phase mode. Low latency mode if I'm using it during tracking, and very occasionally phase linear mode if it's a situation that absolutely needs to be phase linear. Not a big fan of pre-ringing at all!
dave i dont think people really are capable of hearing just how deep and advanced your metal productions are ....that cattle album is a master piece so complex
Yeah fuck this is like four years old... Just came from the sound on sound thing, where you nailed the mix away from andrew fucking sheps and some other dudes i quite adore...you know like who will be the new john williams for film composing...this is you for me for "metal" producing... Would be really cool to have more content from you... ❤
Thanks for doing this test always love this kind of stuff. Unfortunately for me going back and forth from just snare to then kick and stare full drum set is too confusing.. I'm a pretty proficient mix engineer but this kind of study you should compare apples to apples than oranges oranges .. Just my take away - Thanks again all the best I know this is three years old, Would love to hear the SE Electronics V-Beat against these.. That And the M201 are my favorite Mics these days for Snare and guitar amps.. Ok Thanks Again! 🍻

Dude, please start uploading content again. Im sure that im not alone when i say that we dont mind if your content is consistent or patchy (we're gonna appreciate the hell out of it any way). You strike us like the kind of guy who knows a thing or two (or a dozen) about what you're talking about. Im sure that more people than I would greatly appreciate your return to uploading any content you see fit.
For other comparison please select a better beat or drummer .That cymbals hits sounds harsh . Prefer hearing a simple beat with hi-hat because is a snare vid. Thanks for the test anyway.
Come hang out after the premiere for another LIVE chat and Q&A. See you there!

They just sound like a snare w unpleasant overtone issues
No one is talking about the Pyle. Not bad at all for 12 bux
i will buy the pyle
I actually got a Pyle and haven’t touched an i5 or sm57 since! 😎
Yep I have a handful of them. Use them on snare and toms. Just started to get into the 604 Sennheiser a tho. We'll see.
3:20 441 3:36 sm57 4:55 rode nt6 2:33 audix d1 2:48 audix i5 for me the audix i5 is the clean winner
441 has been my go to for a few years. I want body and depth from the snare top. I use the under and overheads for the air and crack of the snares.
Its damn hard to beat the price tag of an SM57. I love my 421's too
No one is mentioning the Audix D1… that was legit my favorite one out of the group. It had clarity that I really enjoyed that literally none of the other mics had.
I agree. It lacked body but I would maybe move it or add a mic. It might matter that lately I prefer condensers on snare.
Its between the 441 and the NT6 for me, I really like the fullness of the 441, but I also love that "ping" in the NT6, both sounded great. Also the bleed was so minimal in both. Fantastic video Dave :) thank you

Do you remember if you had the presence lift on on the 441? Also was that the Blackfire 541 version of it? Does it have a Presence switch even?
Is that a Sennheiser 441 u3 or a bf541 model?
maybe you should making the video for Kick mic compare, It's really impressive.
I like the i5 because it has a solid usable sound and manageable bleed, but also for the protective basket on the front.
Super helpful test dude. Thanks for taking the time
It's hard to beat a 441. Also great on guitars and vocals.
Amazing mic for sure!
Yeah it's very bulky for this use, but try putting that podmic on the snare top, it's quite good.
I might have to do that!
congrats on the new Cattle Decapitation album. Sounds great. I hope you keep working with them yall are a excellent combo
Thoughts on the beta57? 👀
Is it because of the mic position that SM75 is a little fatter in the softer play than DP5. I saw the sm57 is nearer to the center of the drum head than the dp5.

I’ll buy them
E945 off axis bleed is nasty like an MD421. E22S being a condenser might not be preferable if the transient is to extreme, amazing on toms though
EXCELLENT shootout. Thanks so much for this. That sennheiser has so much depth and image, it's gorgeous.
Is it just me or does that snare drum sound rough? Lots of ringing and just a really nasty tuning.
Phenomenal presentation here.
My favorites here are the beyer m201, the md441, and the nt6, i may just have to get myself an m201 sometime soon
Also, I imagine the md441 would sound really nice on the bottom of the snare to keep the wires from getting too harsh
Yeah, the 441 gets a lot of use on snare bottom by other producers. I also love the m201 but find it lacks a little bite on its own. It's a really cool mic and I've had a pair for a few years, but I'm still discovering where I like them best.
441 sounds awesome!

Maybe try trading up for the NT55s with the built in pads and HPFs. I use them all the time and they sound great.
@@DaveOteroTube I'll look into it for sure. Love these vids man. Love your production as well. Keep it up and stay healthy.

Audix d1 is by far my favorite.
Many still love that mic, but it's taken a few steps back for me personally after this shootout.
This would have been a great mic shootout if the snare was tuned and didn’t sound like shit. Still can’t go wrong with a 57 or beta.
😂😂😂
Thanks for such a well done comparison! Is the Zen Pro SM57 mod transformerless or the upgraded transformer?
That's a microphone test

Would like to hear that telefunken mics, also the earthworks mics are popular now even in metal scenarios, something to check out👀
Great Video Dave 👌🏼
can we just agree that the pyle sounds way better than a 12 dollar mic deserves to sound?
Yeah, maybe, but still shit... 🤷♂️
Pls make a rundown of the Green Druid recording. That new song sounds so nice!
I find them to be super similar honestly.

Nt6 sounded best to my ear 👌
The NT6 is killer and soooo tiny and easy to place. Super bad ass sleeper mic.
X2! That’s what I use 🙂
Couldn’t tell the difference.
condensers on snare fellas
What Crash? That things killer
Yeah I noticed that.
